Grain Elevator – Mokena In 1842, the first grain elevator was constructed in Buffalo, New York, by retail merchant Joseph Dart.

Dart’s invention consisted of a wooden structure that served as storage bins for grain. Loading the grain into this structure was a steam-driven belt, which had buckets attached to it. As the belt with buckets was lowered into the hold of a ship, the buckets would scoop up the grain and hoist it up into the structure, where it was dropped into tall bins.

This is where the term “elevator” originated because this is exactly what the process did. It elevated the grain from the ship and stored it in bins until it was lowered for transport or for milling purposes.

Dart and others soon discovered that the elevator’s bins kept grain dry, cool and free from pests, which could destroy the entire load. The elevators also made it possible to weigh the grain as it was being stored and test for purity and contaminants.

Soon the grain elevator system evolved and became an important part of Chicago’s growth in the 19th century.

As the railroads expanded throughout the Midwest, farmers were able to get their crops from the prairies to the marketplace more quickly and efficiently.

The grain elevator soon became part of a new supply chain of industrialized agriculture, which was made possible by the McCormick reaper and the standardized system of grading wheat introduced by the Chicago Board of Trade in 1857.

This system allowed crops of similar quality from a variety of different farmers to be combined by grading for shipping, storage and trading.

To tap into the Chicago market, a large grain elevator was constructed along the south side of the Rock Island Railroad tracks just east of Mokena Street.

fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Children likely to doze off before New Year’s were given the experience of celebrating the holiday thanks to the Plainfield Park District.

Sam Gaffney of Channahon was with her son at the Noon Year’s Countdown celebration that was held Saturday in the Plainfield Township Community Center.

In the game room, she took pictures of her son as he stuck his head through a holiday-themed cutout. Other children were either playing life-sized versions of Connect Four or Jenga,

scavenger hunting, eating snacks or playing bingo.

“It’s pretty good,” Gaffney said about the celebration. “A lot of good activities. A lot going on.”

The Noon Year’s program took place at 11 a.m., with the countdown for the new year taking place before noon. After the countdown, balloons from a net attached to the ceiling were released, and the children danced while blowing on party horns.

Misty Bartlett, the park district’s recreation manager for programming, said the event is a celebration for children who can’t stay up late or who are too young to stay up to even 10 p.m.

“It’s kind of like giving them a feel

of what New Year’s Eve is like with the celebration, with fun and games with your family,” Bartlett said.

She said the park district added bingo games to this year’s event.

“Each year we try to add something a little bit different,” she said.

Besides the games at the celebration, some of the activities included a “selfie station,” where parents could go inside a makeshift photo booth and take selfies with their children.

Another activity was the scavenger hunt, where children searched around the community center for hidden pictures. Bartlett said the pictures had a gold theme because it is the park district’s 50th anniversary.

The Plainfield Park District has been commemorating its 50 years in the community and previously held a Christmas tree lighting ceremony at Village Green Park that also included many trees decorated by the community.

For Noon Year’s, one of the new things the park district has done is walk-in registrations, Bartlett said. Previously it was a pre-registered event.

She said there were 34 children pre-registered for the celebration, and she estimated about 100 people would be in the building.

“It seems to be growing each year. ... I see some returning faces, some new faces,” Bartlett said.

Putting smiles on children’s faces Don West never met a wish he couldn’t fulfill

JOLIET – When Anthony “Booter” West of Channahon was in third grade, he had a friend – Josh – who left school.

When Josh returned a year later, he was bald and one leg was amputated.

Josh, it turned out, had leukemia and wanted to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger. Booter turned to his father, Don West, of Joliet, founder of the local foundation Wish Upon A Star.

“It took him 16 months,” Booter said, “but he got it done.”

Softball games in the snow. Golf outings. Spaghetti dinners. Casino nights.

These are just some of the fundraisers Don organized to fund the organization he began 38 years ago to brighten the lives of children with life-threatening illnesses.

And that doesn’t count the Christmas and Easter parties, complete with Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, Booter said.

“He wanted to put smiles on kids’ faces one last time,” Booter said.

Chief Andy Doyle of the Troy Fire Protection District said he and some of the firefighters occasionally accompanied Don when bringing holiday gifts to children. Andy said they did it simply to help kids in need – and to help out Don. “He was a great guy,” Andy said.

“He put everybody in front of himself, always.”

Don was 64 when he died Dec. 4.

Booter said that Don said goodbye to a well-paying regional sales manager position to work completely for his foundation, to “chase his dream and chase the dreams of kids” in the greater Will County area, whether the kids wanted to visit SeaWorld or meet the Chicago Bulls.

“I’ve seen families empty their life savings and sell everything trying to give their dying child that one last wish,” Don said in a 2011 Herald-News story, “but the cost for them is just too much.”

Don said Disney World was the No. 1 requested wish, but he listed a few notable ones: Arnold Schwarzenegger buying one of two prototype bikes at a bicycle convention for a child battling cancer and Billy Joel rescheduling a

Some wishes were simpler. One child, Don said, simply wanted a woodworking space for Christmas. So on a bitterly cold December day, Don put the family in a limousine to enjoy dinner in Chicago.

Meanwhile, Don and his volunteers worked for eight hours creating that space. This included building a ramp and installing the electrical elements beneath the frozen ground. As was typical, Don deflected the praise.

“It just goes to show what great people we have in our community,” Don had said.

Was there ever a wish Don could not meet?

“Not one,” Booter said.

Only one element of Don’s calling was challenging.

“Going to the funerals was obviously very tough,” Booter said. “He’s been to more funerals than probably

anybody.”

The 38th annual Wish Wonderfest will be Jan. 20 and Jan. 21 at Inwood Recreation Center, 3000 W. Jefferson St. in Joliet. In addition to live entertainment, food, drink and raffles, the fest will include “Co-Ed Softball in the Snow.”

“We have a wonderful lineup,” Millie Shepich of Joliet, Wish Upon A Star’s secretary for the past 18 years, said. “We have Simply Billy and Simply Elton, fun raffle items ... and delicious food and drinks. It’s just a good time for everybody.”

It’s expanded since Don first began “Softball in the Snow.” At that time, Don was a 26-year-old paramedic raising money for a Chicago area Ronald McDonald House. Helping kids through softball felt logical to Don and he planned the event in his garage.

“He was always involved in baseball. He was always a coach of Little League and pony league,” Jerry Shepich of Joliet, a friend of Don’s for 40 years and Millie Shepich’s hus-

band, said. “And he just wanted to do something for the kids, a final wish, that type of thing ... they did it for four or five years and then he founded Wish Upon A Star.”

Jerry said Don founded Wish Upon A Star in 1978, two years before the nationally known Make-A-Wish Foundation was formed.

That first “Softball in the Snow,” according to Don, consisted of one game, two teams – Don’s volunteers versus the Illinois State Police – and music via turntable and records. Don still donned a mitt in 2011, although he no longer played second base.

“I’m not as fleet-footed as I used to be, so they hide me in the outfield,” Don had said. “I don’t care, as long as I can play.”

Plainfield family offers Helping Hugs With a last name like Hug, it’s no wonder the Hug family of Plainfield doesn’t think twice of helping others.

It seems to come naturally for them.

In the spring of 2013 when Plainfield was flooded after two days of torrid rains – 4.65 inches of rain fell in 24 hours in Will County – Elizabeth and Tom Hug jumped in their Jeep and headed to unincorporated areas to do what they could to help.

“These are kids who go to school with my children,” Elizabeth remembers thinking.

What was supposed to be a onetime effort to help those in need has turned into the family (and friends)run organization Helping Hugs.

“It’s become a big part of our family,” Elizabeth said.

When Washington, Illinois, was ravaged by a tornado in 2014, the group put together and sent care packages.

They adopted a family for Christmas this year, a single mom and her three young children. Elizabeth was humbled by the children’s Christmas wish lists, which included tennis shoes and pajamas.

The Hug family shopped for their adopted family together. Friends and neighbors helped out by donating some funds.

“We got $20 here, $10 there. It was great, it all came together,” Elizabeth said.

blankets to people who are either homeless or need to keep warm.

They take the clothing or blankets, secure in plastic bags, and leave them in places they know people can easily find them. The packages are left on benches in front of stores, parks, in bus shelters, by pharmacies, etc.

One group donated leftover T-shirts from an MS walk, so Helping Hugs put them out for those in need.

Elizabeth also likes to leave children’s books for the little ones.

So far they have left hundreds of bags of warm outerwear, blankets and books around Plainfield and nearby areas.

While they don’t typically see who picks them up, one afternoon Elizabeth was in a store across from where she had left a bag on a bench and noticed an elderly couple take it.

bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man fatally was shot before his car crashed into a garage Saturday. At 8:57 p.m. the noise of the crash near Fifth Avenue and Grover Street prompted neighbors to call 911,

Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said.

“A silver Hyundai Sonata had crashed through the brick wall of the garage of a house in the 400 block of Grover. Firefighters responded to remove the driver from the vehicle and discovered a gunshot wound to his chest,” Roechner said.

Dasean B. Clark, 21, was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 9:41 p.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s office.

JOLIET – A 22-year-old man is being held on $10 million bond after being charged with the Dec. 23 slaying of a Joliet man.

Toddrick D. Pinnick of Joliet was taken into custody at 3:52 p.m. Friday in the parking lot of Domino’s Pizza, 2405 Caton Farm Road. Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said Pinnick was sitting in the front passenger seat of a Saturn with a loaded handgun between his legs.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m. Dec. 23, a vehicle driven by Brian D. Byrd, 24, crashed into two other cars near Ingalls Avenue and Broadway. Ac-

cording to police reports, Byrd had been driving west on Ingalls when a dark blue 2005 Jeep Cherokee pulled alongside and Pinnick fired several rounds into Byrd’s car. Byrd was shot in the head.

“Over the last week detectives reviewed an extensive amount of video surveillance and were able to piece together a license plate that led to identifying Pinnick as the shooter,” Roechner said Sunday. Roechner said Pinnick and Byrd had been involved in a longtime ongoing feud.

The gun Pinnick allegedly had when he was arrested will be tested to determine whether it is the murder weapon, Roechner said. It is the same caliber weapon, according to

mine where he was shot. No suspect information was available.

“With no witnesses to the crash, this is a case where the public’s help will be invaluable,” Roechner said.

OBITUARIES DR. ALLEN C. McCOWAN Dr. Allen C. McCowan, age 81, of Lockport, passed away Friday, December 30, 2016 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home surrounded by family. Allen was born in Joliet and was a lifelong area resident.

Starting at Brown’s one room school in Elwood, Allen continued his education attending Joliet Central High School, Joliet Junior College, Northern Illinois University and earned his Doctorate of Administration Degree from University of Illinois. He was a former Administrator in Waterman, IL, Lockport, IL, Edwardsville, IL and Woodridge, IL; currently supervising student teachers through Eastern Illinois University.

He was a United States Army veteran; an avid golfer and tennis player; gardener and dancer; a huge University of Illinois sports fan, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends, of whom he cherished.

Preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Shogren; his parents, Howard and Alice (Noel) McCowan.

Survived by his loving and devoted wife, Nancy (Boza); his children, Richard (Roberta) McCowan, Cathy (Oliver) Brandt, Don (Kathy) McCowan, Amy (Mike) Steffgen and Andrew (Andrea) Fry; nine grandchildren, Melissa (Kyle) Fraiser, Kevin and Keith McCowan, Jessica, Jordan and Tyler Shogren and Carter, Isabella and Camryn Steffgen; son-in-law, Steve Shogren; and a brother, Charles (Diane) McCowan.

Several nieces and nephews also survive.

PAT McHENRY Pat McHenry, age 81, a longtime resident of Lincoln Estates in Frankfort, IL, passed away suddenly on December 24, 2016.

Pat retired from Panduit Corporation where he was a machinist. He was the president of

Ridgewood Cycle Association for 45 years. He enjoyed motorcycles and horses.

Pat is preceded in death by former wives, Beverly and Sharon; parents, Edith and George; daughter, Colleen McHenry; son, Pat G. McHenry; sisters, Marilyn and Ruth; grandson, Dusty Smith; great grandson Ryan Smith.

Born: December 22, 1955; in Detroit, MI Died: December 26, 2016; in New Lenox, IL Deborah Lynn Nobles (nee Hartley) was born in Detroit, Michigan on December 22, 1955 to the loving parents of Jim Hartley and Margaret Hartley (nee Gallagher). She was the oldest out of seven

children.

Deborah moved to Lockport, Illinois and attended St. Joseph Catholic grade school and Lockport High School. She was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and served under the leadership of Pastor Clint Wilburn.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Margaret Hartley; one sister, Diane Hartley Maffeo; one brother, Tommy Hartley.

Deborah drove semi-trucks for two years and worked as a school bus driver for eight years, as well as many other jobs and retired.

She was a loving resident of Joliet/Lockport.

Through the years, Deborah became loved and known by a lot of people.

She passed away on Monday, December 26, 2016 at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Illinois.

She is survived by her loving husband, Leroy Nobles Sr.; son, Leroy Nobles Jr.; and her foster daughter, Pamela DeJesus; her siblings, Jim Hartley, Bob Hartley, Cheryl Smerz, and Timothy Hartley; and a host of other relatives and friends.

James W. Palade, age 71.

Passed away peacefully on Friday, December 30, 2016 at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home surrounded by his loving family.

Born March 4, 1945 in Elmhurst, to John and Elsie (nee Marshall) Palade, he was raised in Northlake, and was a graduate of West Leyden High School. Jim worked as an operating engineer and heavy equipment operator through IUOE Local #150 for 42 years.

He enjoyed fishing and keeping his yard in perfect condition. He will be remembered for all the good deeds he did for others, and for being like a father to his grand nephews, Niko and Kino Garcia, and like a second grandpa to his neighbors, Mark and Eric Heck.

He was the beloved husband of 34 years to Amparo (nee Gutierrez) Palade; devoted brother to John Palade, Marie Peterson, Pete (Connie) Palade, Elsie Quinn, Bob (Beverly) Palade, Jeannie (Neil) Cieslak, and Vikki (Barry) Daidone; and loving uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was preceded by his parents, John and Elsie Palade; a sister, Dorothy Palade; a sister-in-law, Marcella Palade; and two brothers-in-law, Pete Peterson and Ron Cowl.

JOSEPH M. PESACK Joseph M. Pesack, age 77, of Big Sandy, TN, and formerly of Joliet, passed away Wednesday, December 28, 2016 in Tennessee.

Affectionately known as “G-Pa,” “Papa Joe” and “Mr. P,” he will be remembered as a loving husband, dad and grandpa.

“In Chicago, we just don’t have a deterrent to pick up a gun,” he said. “Any time a guy stealing a loaf of bread spends more time pre-trial in jail than a gun offender, something is wrong.”

Johnson, who has for months complained about Illinois’ lax gun laws, said he thinks more and more gang members are arming themselves because the price for being caught is small compared to other large cities. He said gang members he has spoken to consider the court system “a joke.”

The bulk of the deaths and shooting incidents, which jumped from 2,426 in

2015 to 3,550 last year, occurred in only five of the city’s 22 police districts on the city’s South and West sides, all poor and predominantly black areas where gangs are most active.

Police said the shootings in those areas generally weren’t random, with more than 80 percent of the victims having previously been identified by police as more susceptible because of their gang ties or past arrests.

The city has scrambled to address the violence. Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced last year that 1,000 officers would be added to the police department.

CHICAGO – One of the most violent years in Chicago history ended with a sobering tally: 762 homicides, the most in two decades in the city and more than New York and Los Angeles combined.

The nation’s third largest city also saw 1,100 more shooting incidents last year than it did in 2015, according to data released Sunday by the Chicago Police Department. The statistics underline a story of bloodshed that has put Chicago at the center of a national dialogue about gun violence.

The numbers are staggering, even for those who followed the steady news accounts of weekends ending with dozens of shootings and monthly death tolls that hadn’t been seen in years. The increase in homicides compared to 2015, when 485 were reported, is the largest spike in 60 years.

Police and city officials have lamented the flood of illegal guns into the city, and the crime statistics appeared to support their claims: Police recovered 8,300 illegal guns in 2016, a 20 percent increase from the previous year.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said during a news conference Sunday that Chicago is among many U.S. cities that have seen a spike in violence, including in attacks on police.

He said anger at police, including in the wake of video released that showed a white Chicago officer shooting a black teenager 16 times, has left criminals “emboldened” to violent crimes.

He also said it’s becoming clearer to criminals that they have little to fear

been trying to figure out why homicides and shootings – which began climbing the year before – suddenly surged.

On Sunday, Johnson said he hoped several initiatives – including more street cameras in some of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods, and the expansion of gunshot-detection systems – would lead to more arrests and drive down the violent crime rate.

Johnson has said several factors have contributed to the increased violence.

He noted 2016 was the first full year since the city was forced in November 2015 to release video of the fatal police shooting of Laquan McDonald, the black 17-year-old boy who was shot 16 times by a white police officer.

The video cost former Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy his job, sparked major protests around the city, and led to federal and state investigations of the police department.

It also left Johnson with the task of trying to restore public trust in what appeared to be a weakened police force, a perception that was only buttressed by a dramatic drop in the number of arrests in 2016.

The police department has cited several factors for the declining numbers, including a concerted effort not to make minor drug arrests and focus on gun violence. Johnson pointed to gun arrests and gun seizures as evidence that his officers are aggressively fighting crime.

But critics said they have no doubt that officers have become far more reluctant to do their jobs since the McDonald video was released and the officer who killed the teen was charged with murder.

ISTANBUL – Turkish police struggled Sunday to track down a gunman who attacked New Year’s Eve revelers at a popular Istanbul nightclub, killing at least 39 people, most of them foreigners. Close to 70 more were wounded.

The attacker, armed with a long-barreled weapon, killed a policeman and a civilian outside the Reina club around 1:15 a.m. before entering and firing at people partying inside, Istanbul Gov. Vasip Sahin said.

“Unfortunately, [he] rained bullets in a very cruel and merciless way on innocent people who were there to celebrate New Year’s and have fun,” Sahin told reporters.

Nearly two-thirds of the people killed were foreigners, many from the Middle East, Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency said. It said the bodies of 25 foreign nationals killed in the attack would be delivered to their families Monday.

Countries from India to Belgium reported their citizens among the casualties.

An estimated 600 people were celebrating inside the club, which often is frequented by famous locals, including singers, actors and sports stars. Several shocked revelers were seen fleeing the scene after the shooting, and the music fell silent.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for what authorities immediately called a terrorist attack. Turkish officials did not comment on the possible identity or motives of the

gunman.

The mass shooting followed more than 30 violent acts over the past year in Turkey, which is a member of the NATO alliance and a partner in the U.S.-led coalition fighting against the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. The country endured multiple bombings in 2016, including three in Istanbul alone that authorities blamed on IS, a failed coup attempt in July and renewed conflict with Kurdish rebels in the southeast.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vehemently condemned “the terror attack in Istanbul’s Ortakoy neighborhood in the first hours of 2017” and offered condolences for those who lost their lives, including the “foreign guests.”

Among the dead were an 18-year-old Israeli woman, three Indians, three Lebanese, a woman with dual French-Tunisian citizenship and her Tunisian husband, three Jordanians, a Belgian national and a Kuwaiti citizen, according to those countries’ foreign ministries and a diplomat.

A U.S. State Department official, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity, said one American man was among those wounded. Turkey’s minister for family and social policies, Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya, said citizens of Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Lebanon and Libya were among those injured.

Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said the gunman, who had not been identified, remained at large. “Our security forces have started the necessary operations. God willing, he will be caught in a short period of time,” Soylu said.

It’s hard to read too much into the Bears’ 38-10 Week 17 thumping at the hands of the Minnesota Vikings.

Look at the 5-10 record of road teams Sunday and in particular the 1-7 record of road teams with no chance to make the playoffs. Only the Arizona Cardinals beat the hapless Los Angeles Rams.

Expecting anything more of the Bears in Minneapolis than what you saw Sunday was naive. We did however learn a few more things about this ballclub.

The Bears can bring Matt Barkley back to compete for the backup quarterback job in 2017 if they like, but it’s really not necessary.

In his six starts, Barkley’s final 2016 stats line – 129 for 216 passing, 59.7 percent completion rate, 1,611 yards, 7.4 yards an attempt, eight touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 68.3 passer rating – makes him the NFL’s lowest-rated quarterback with six or more starts.

Even Ryan Fitzpatrick snuck ahead of him, finishing with a 69.5 passer rating.

Barkley was better than anyone expected in his first three starts, but he was worse than we may have imagined in the last three, and it’s time to move on.

If Jay Cutler still is here, they should bring back Connor Shaw and some new blood, a veteran and a rookie and let them all compete.

If Cutler is gone, they should bring back Brian Hoyer and Shaw to compete with another veteran and at least one rookie.

There is no way the Bears should release Cutler before the 2017 draft if they’ve decided to move on.

With as many teams needing quarterback help as there is, it seems certain some team would give the Bears a fifth- or sixth- or at least a seventh-round pick for him.

After the draft, if they can’t get a pick for him, then they can release him. But he is an asset, and at least for now not in any way a liability, so letting him go for nothing just to be rid of him makes no sense.

The Bears also have to do something to get better at left tackle.

With Kyle Long healthy next year, the Bears will be one of the best teams in the league at guard, center and guard with Long, Cody Whitehair and Josh Sitton, and Bobby Massie has been a different and much improved player since returning from a concussion in Week 12 against the Titans.

Jordan Howard: It’s fitting to end the season with Howard leading this category, as he did so often throughout his rookie campaign. He was the best thing going for the Bears on either side of the ball, thanks in part to great blocking, too, as he went off for 135 yards on 23 carries. Howard set the franchise’s rookie rushing record, finishing the season with 1,313 rushing yards.

First-half run defense: The Vikings took the Bears apart through the air more so than the pass. The front seven helped hold Minnesota’s two running backs to 32 yards on 12 carries before halftime (2.7 yards a carry).

The season is over: The Bears don’t have to play again this season, their worst in 47 years.

They can get started on an offseason with big holes to fill on the roster.

Pass defense: Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford completed passes at ease, finding receivers, tight end and running backs wide open without much of a pass rush. The only time Bradford was hit, he completed the pass for a first down and the Bears were flagged for roughing the passer.

Protecting the football: After two weeks of interceptions and lost fumbles, things continued to spiral for Barkley. He threw two picks, both deep in Vikings territory, and lost a fumble, leading to his fourth-quarter benching for David Fales. Barkley turned it over 12 times in the last three games. Jeremy Langford lost a fumble, and Bralon Addison muffed a punt.

Covering Rudolph: Minnesota tight end Kyle Rudolph had 11 catches for 117 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown. Often, Bradford would find Rudolph up the seam or in the flat without a Bears defender nearby.

Barkley’s first interception: It ended a well-called and well-executed first drive that had gone 59 yards in eight plays. Barkley rolled out on a play-action and tried to force it to Alshon Jeffery. Xavier Rhodes intercepted the pass at the goal line, ending the Bears’ scoring chance. The Vikings went up 10-0 on their ensuing drive.

The muffed punt: Trailing by 10 points with 1:11 to go in the first half, the Bears had a chance to cut into Minnesota’s lead and then get the ball back to start the third quarter. Addison couldn’t catch Jeff Locke’s punt, and Minnesota recovered. The Vikings scored a touchdown five plays later.

Fales enters: After Barkley’s lost fumble, which resulted in a Vikings touchdown, Fox did what he said he had no plans of doing, which was put Fales in at quarterback. Seeing Fales make his NFL debut was quite the way for this Bears season to end.

What now?

Record: 3-13 What it means: It’s the worst record for the Bears since the NFL went to 16 games, and they will have the No. 3 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

What’s next: Bears players will clean out their lockers Monday, and general manager Ryan Pace and Fox will address the media Wednesday to close the season.

How they fix left tackle could be as puzzling as the quarterback conundrum.

On defense, everyone knows the Bears need at least two quality safeties and two more cornerbacks, but one of the lessons from the Bears’ finale is the idea they are set at outside linebacker is fool’s gold.

Leonard Floyd showed some exciting flashes this year, but he also missed four games because of injury and was limited in several others, and with two concussions in the past six weeks, it is reasonable to be concerned.

The Bears’ other prize pass-rusher, Pernell McPhee, missed two

games last season, was limited throughout the second half of last season and missed his seventh game this season Sunday.

McPhee has given the Bears only 10 sacks in two seasons.

Willie Young is a nice piece as part of a group of four or five OLBs, and Lamar Houston may be back in 2017 or could be a cap casualty after his second ACL repair.

These Bears have the potential to be good in the front seven now, but they clearly are in need of another five-technique and a big-time pass rusher who can stay on the field is a need as well.

Bears fans can only hope that Santa swings through town one more time before September.

MINNEAPOLIS – The Bears finished the 2016 season 3-13, and it’s going to be difficult for them to point to the six losses within a touchdown as reason for optimism the way the season ended.

Sunday’s 38-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings caps a two-game stretch that saw the Bears get outscored 79-31. Coach John Fox’s team was supposed to be different than Marc Trestman’s 2014 Bears because they stayed competitive, but not on Christmas Eve or New Year’s Day. “Well, you go minus-10 [in turnovers]. When you give the ball away that many times, the math doesn’t usually work very good,” Fox said after Sunday’s loss, marking his worst season as a head coach.

Matt Barkley threw two interceptions and lost a fumble against the Vikings, who had their own issues over the past two months but jumped out to a 17-0 lead to finish their season 8-8.

ESPN and NFL Network reported Sunday that Fox would not be fired. Fox said he has not received assurance he would return next season, but he wants to remain head coach of the rebuilding Bears.

“You start something, you want to finish it,” he said. “I think compared to situations that I was in, chose to leave, this is a job I wanted.

I think a lot of this organization. I think a lot of this city. I think a lot of the tradition of this team. … It’s definitely a job I want to finish.”

Jeffery not talking future: Alshon Jeffery had only one catch for 10 yards against the Vikings, which would be quite the way to end his time with the Bears, but he said the possibility that Sunday would be his final game never crossed his mind.

Expected to be the league’s top free agent at his position, Jeffery would only defer to general manager Ryan Pace and his agent when asked whether he wanted to return.

“As of right now, I’m a Chicago Bear,” he said. “It’s a business at the end of the day. Like I said, I’m a Chicago Bear.”

Jeffery did set the bar high for 2017 if he remains a Bear.

“I guarantee we’ll win the Super Bowl next year,” he said. “We had a lot of injuries. I don’t think a team in the league had as much injuries as us.”

Futility in takeaways: Cre’Von LeBlanc’s interception saved the Bears from setting the NFL record for fewest forced turnovers in a season. They tied the mark set by Baltimore in 1982 and beat last year’s franchise-low total by six.

Quick hits: Tracy Porter overslept and did not start, Fox said. The veteran cornerback had started every other game but did play a full 16-game season for only the second time in his career.

Patriots clinch home-field advantage with win CHIEFS 37, CHARGERS 27: At San Diego, Alex Smith threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, and the Chiefs clinched the AFC West title and a firstround playoff bye in perhaps the final NFL game in San Diego.

The Chiefs (12-4) took the division with the win and Oakland’s loss at Denver. San Diego (5-11) fired coach Mike McCoy after the game.

MIAMI GARDENS, Florida – Tom Brady threw for 276 yards and three scores Sunday, and the Patriots clinched home-field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs by beating the Dolphins, 35-14.

New England took a 20-0 lead in the first half, and turned away Miami’s comeback bid with the help of a 77-yard touchdown catch-and-run by Julian Edelman and a 69-yard fumble return by linebacker Shea McClellin.

The Patriots (14-2), already assured of a first-round bye, became the ninth team since 1972 to go undefeated on the road during the regular season.

The Dolphins (10-6), beaten for only the second time in the past 11 games, already had earned an AFC wild-card berth. They play their first postseason game since 2008 next weekend at Pittsburgh.

STEELERS 27, BROWNS 24 (OT): At Pittsburgh, Steelers backups assured the Browns of the top pick in the 2017 draft.

Landry Jones hit Cobi Hamilton with a 26-yard touchdown with 2:57 left in overtime. The Browns (1-15) took a lead on Cody Parkey’s 34-yard field goal with 7:17 remaining in the extra session.

Jones, who started while the playoff-bound Steelers rested Ben Roethlisberger, took the Steelers 75 yards in nine plays. The last was a pretty lob to the end zone that Hamilton hauled in to give Pittsburgh (11-5) its seventh straight victory.

The Steelers will host Miami in the wild-card round next weekend.

JETS 30, BILLS 10: At East Rutherford, New Jersey, Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes in what was likely his final game for the Jets.

Despite a 5-11 record, the Jets are making no changes in leadership.

The Bills (7-9) also face some uncertainty this offseason after firing coach Rex Ryan earlier in the week and elevating offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn to the interim role. Two other people with direct knowledge of the situation told the AP before the game that Lynn is the clear favorite to take over the job permanently.

TITANS 24, TEXANS 17: At Nashville, Tennessee, Houston quarterback Tom Savage started for the AFC South champions and left in the second quarter to be evaluated for a concussion and was cleared. He took a snap to kneel down on the final play of the first half and was diagnosed with a concussion after being re-evaluated at halftime.

Houston (9-7) will host an AFC wildcard game next weekend, possibly with uncertainty at quarterback.

The Cowboys (13-3) locked up the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs when the Eagles (7-9) beat the Giants on Dec. 22.

So Dak Prescott played only two series and Ezekiel Elliott watched from the sideline.

Romo connected with Terrance Williams for his first TD pass since Nov. 22, 2015 against Miami. Romo finished 3 for 4 for 29 yards.

BUCCANEERS 17, PANTHERS 16: At Tampa, Florida, Jameis Winston threw for 202 yards and one touchdown, and the Buccaneers broke up Cam Newton’s 2-point conversion throw in the closing seconds for their first winning season in six years.

Winston threw a 10-yard pass to Mike Evans to snap a fourth-quarter tie and became the first player in NFL history to start his career with consecutive 4,000-yard seasons. But the Bucs (9-7) were eliminated from playoff contention, not getting the help they needed in other games for their first berth since 2007.

The Panthers finish 6-10.

COLTS 24, JAGUARS 20: At Indianapo-

lis, Andrew Luck threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jack Doyle with 9 seconds left. Indy (8-8) went 75 yards in 84 seconds with no timeouts to avoid its first losing season since 2011, sending retiring linebacker Robert Mathis out with a win in his final NFL game.

Jacksonville (3-13) matched the second-worst record in franchise history after blocking a punt with 1:54 to go and breaking a 17-17 tie with 1:33 left.

BENGALS 27, RAVENS 10: At Cincinnati, Andy Dalton completed his first 10 passes, one for a touchdown, and Rex Burkhead ran for a pair of scores in the Bengals’ fifth straight win at home over the Ravens.

The Bengals (6-9-1) missed the playoffs for the first time in six years, and haven’t won a playoff game in 26 years, the sixth-longest streak in NFL history.

Coach Marvin Lewis, 0-7 in the postseason, says he’ll return in 2017.

Baltimore (8-8) failed to reach the playoffs for the third time in four years.

GIANTS 19, REDSKINS 10: At Landover, Maryland, facing an opponent with nothing to play for, the Washington Redskins blew their chance to make the playoffs with an uninspired 19-10 loss to the New York Giants on Sunday.

The Redskins would have made the playoffs with a win as long as the Green Bay Packers-Detroit Lions night game didn’t end in a tie. Instead, Kirk Cousins was intercepted twice in the second half

by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Washington (8-7-1) goes into an offseason filled with questions.

The Packers and Lions each qualified as a result of the Redskins’ loss to New York (11-5).

BRONCOS 24, RAIDERS 6: At Denver, in a game that couldn’t have gone much worse, Oakland lost its latest starting quarterback, Matt McGloin, to a shoulder injury, then fell to a team with nothing to play for.

Several Denver players say coach Gary Kubiak will be stepping down for health reasons. The Broncos finish 9-7.

Combined with Kansas City’s win over San Diego, the Raiders (12-4) squandered the AFC West title and the first-round bye that went with it – and instead fell to the No. 5 seed.

FALCONS 38, SAINTS 32: At Atlanta, Matt Ryan bolstered his MVP credentials with a brilliant first half, throwing four touchdown passes to secure a firstround playoff bye.

Ryan was 17 of 19 for 235 yards by halftime, directing the Falcons (11-5) to touchdowns on all five possessions and a commanding 35-13 lead. He finished 27 of 36 for 331 yards, leaving him with a franchise-record 4,944 yards, 38 touchdowns and only seven interceptions this season.

Atlanta is seeded second in the NFC to Dallas. The Saints finish 7-9.

SEAHAWKS 25, 49ERS 23: At Santa Clara, California, Russell Wilson threw for 258 yards and a touchdown, and the Seahawks rallied from an early 11-point deficit in what could be coach Chip Kelly’s final game with the 49ers.

The NFC West champion Seahawks (10-5-1) head to the playoffs as the third seed in the NFC. The Seahawks will host the loser of Sunday night’s game between Detroit and Green Bay next week. The 49ers finish 2-14.

CARDINALS 44, RAMS 6: At Los Angeles, Carson Palmer threw touchdown passes to Jeremy Ross, Darren Fells and Larry Fitzgerald, and the Cardinals wrapped up a frustrating season.

Fitzgerald caught five passes and took the overall NFL lead with 107 catches in perhaps his final game for the Cardinals (7-8-1). Arizona missed the playoffs one year after reaching the NFC championship game despite an offense and a defense ranked in the top quarter of the league.

Los Angeles finishes 4-12.

Through the early portion of the boys basketball season, the Joliet area gained statewide notoriety thanks largely to Bolingbrook and Joliet West.

Both again showed they belong with the top teams in Illinois with their performances in last week’s Christmas tournaments.

Bolingbrook beat conference rival Homewood-Flossmoor, 67-62, to win the title at Hinsdale Central. The unbeaten Raiders are loaded, with Nana Akenten a definite all-state candidate, and they are playing well together.

Joliet West beat Curie, 55-49, in the much-anticipated matchup at Pontiac. OK, so it happened in the fifth-place game rather than the expected championship game because both previously unbeaten teams were upset in the quarterfinals, but it still happened. West did not play well in its loss to a very good Bloom team, but the Tigers’ game was back to normal with their victories over Oak Park-River Forest and Curie the final day.

Without a doubt, this area is blessed to have two teams the caliber of Bolingbrook and Joliet West to follow the rest of the season. Incidentally, the two will meet Jan. 24 at Bolingbrook.

There is another local team that had not generated much statewide fanfare before the Christmas tournaments transpired. That may be different now.

Joliet Central entered the largeschool boys division of the State Farm Classic at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington with an 8-1 record.

The only blemish was a last-second loss to Minooka in the championship game of the WJOL Thanksgiving Classic, and the Steelmen bounced back to win at Minooka, 46-21, in a Southwest Prairie Conference game Dec. 16.

All coach Lawrence Thompson Jr.’s Steelmen did in the State Farm Classic was win four straight games, and that included handing Wheaton Warrenville South its first loss, 50-42, in a championship game I had the privilege to cover.

“We made a big name for ourselves here,” Central junior point guard Cameron Blackmon said after the title game. “It’s not like Joliet Central was a team anyone was talking about, but today, we stood out.”

What about knocking off an unbeaten opponent for the title?

“We don’t worry about records, ours or anyone else’s,” Blackmon said. “We just focus on what we do.”

The Steelmen (12-1) are shorter than just about everyone they face. The starters against Wheaton Warrenville South are listed at 6-3, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 and 5-11. The top reserves are 6-1 and 6-0.

It matters not.

“We came here and played with aggression,” senior guard JoJo McNair said. “We just have to be stronger and wiser than anyone else. We rebound well even if we aren’t tall. That helps a lot.”

Jose Grubbs, a first-team all-tournament selection, is Central’s big man at 6-3, and he plays multiple roles. He is in his third season as a varsity regular and so has seen firsthand teams such as Bolingbrook and Joliet West gain local headlines.

“We have been under the radar for a long time,” he said. “But what I say is, ‘Why not us?’ We have beaten solid teams, including this one tonight, by trying to slow them down

or do something else that makes them uncomfortable.”

Thompson, whose varsity assistants are Greg Smith and Mike Mines, said there is a big difference in the Steelmen now compared to the team that lost to Minooka at Thanksgiving.

“When we lost to Minooka, we didn’t understand what it takes to win games,” he said. “Today, we did the best we could to win the game. We were a little apprehensive at Thanksgiving. The guys were getting used to me, and I was getting used to them.

“We’re more aggressive now defensively, and we’re sharing the ball better. Both of those things are important in where we are. The key will be if we can continue to get better defensively.”

Thompson, the longtime head coach at Lockport, was the sophomore coach and was on the bench for varsity games at Joliet West last season. He became Central’s head coach after Jeff Corcoran stepped down.

Corcoran was in the stands,

sitting behind the Steelmen bench, at Friday’s championship game. He remains a big supporter of the program. Thompson shook hands with him afterward and wanted to make sure to credit his predecessor in his postgame discussion.

“I want to thank Jeff and Brian Koehne [who was Corcoran’s varsity assistant],” Thompson said. “They set the table with these kids on how to play defense and how to share on offense. I started with that in place and just put in a couple of my tweaks.

A lot of the credit for where we are now goes to those guys.”

We mentioned the Joliet West at Bolingbrook game Jan. 24. How about a couple of more dates to circle on your calendar. Joliet Central is at Bolingbrook on Tuesday, Jan. 17, and will entertain Joliet West on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 18. All are games you will not want to miss.

Bench helps Illinois survive Ohio State, 75-70

CHAMAPAIGN – Malcolm Hill scored 20 points to help Illinois escape with a 75-70 win over Ohio State on Sunday night.

Tracy Abrams added 16 points and Leron Black grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds for Illinois.

Hill drove to his left for a layup to give the Illini a 71-67 lead with 55 seconds left. Jalen Coleman-Lands and Abrams each made two free throws from there to seal it.

Illinois (11-4, 1-1 Big Ten) looked like a different team against the Buckeyes, making stops and going on runs to help its lead. The Illini built a lead that reached as much as 15 points in the latter part of the first half after the Buckeyes went through a couple of scoring droughts.

The Illinois bench outscored Ohio State’s 25-9, led by big men Michael Finke and Maverick Morgan with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

JaQuan Lyle led Ohio State (10-4, 0-1) with 26 points.

Ohio State couldn’t rebound from scoring droughts in both halves despite a hot start to the second in which it took the lead in the final five minutes of the game.

The teams traded baskets to begin the extra period before a Curry basket began an 11-0, victory-clinching run that snapped the Boilermakers’ seven-game winning streak.

Minnesota (13-2, 1-1) overcame 28 points and 22 rebounds from Caleb Swanigan, but it wasn’t enough to save the Boilermakers (12-3, 1-1).

Jordan Murphy added 16 points for Minnesota, which lost its Big Ten opener Tuesday night, 75-74 to Michigan State in overtime in Minneapolis.

The Golden Gophers had lost eight in a row at Purdue and had not won in Mackey Arena since Feb. 26, 2005.

Big picture: Minnesota: The Golden Gophers took complete advantage of their superior perimeter quickness and athleticism to pull away from what had been the Big Ten’s hottest team.

Murphy and fellow big man Reggie Lynch bottled up Purdue’s 7-2 center Isaac Haas, who is the Boilermakers’ second-leading scorer.

Up next: Minnesota: The Golden Gophers travel to Northwestern on Thursday.

Peach Bowl was a typical day for ’Bama’s high-scoring D

The Associated Press ATLANTA – Ryan Anderson no longer holds the unhappy distinction as probably the best Alabama defender without a touchdown.

The top-ranked Crimson Tide linebacker took care of that with a 26-yard interception return late in the first half of Saturday’s 24-7 Peach Bowl defensive throttling of No. 4 Washington.

With a spin move and a short sprint, he joined that not-so-exclusive club.

Anderson is the ninth Alabama defensive player to score a touchdown this season, so his teammates will just have to find something else to give him a hard time about.

“They can’t say anything else to me,” he said after the game. “That’s all they had on me all year. They’ve got to get some new material now.”

It’s hard to find new things to say about the nation’s top defense, but nine players scoring a total of 11 touchdowns is a fair way to sum it up.

Alabama sacked quarterback Jake Browning five times, limited him to 150 passing yards and allowed the Huskies just 44 yards on 29 rushes.

A pretty typical day for the Tide.

Now comes the biggest challenge for Alabama’s defense all season: a rematch with No. 2 Clemson and quarterback Deshaun Watson in the national championship game in Tampa, Florida Jan. 9.

Watson passed for 405 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 73 yards in last year’s title game against ’Bama, which won, 45-40.

In other words, he produced more total yards than Alabama has allowed in its past two games against Florida (261) and Washington (194) combined.

Washington coach Chris Petersen called the group led by defensive end Jonathan Allen and linebacker Reuben Foster a “really, really elite championship defense.”

The Tide is still seeking its fifth national title in eight years, not a runner-up finish.

Hawks readying for possible Winter Classic rain delay

ST. LOUIS – Hockey players are notorious creatures of habit, particularly on game days. Everything is always the same – the wakeup, the breakfast, the morning skate, the nap, the pregame meal, the warmup routine, the game itself. It rarely, if ever, varies.

There’s the home routine, and the road routine.

There most definitely is not a rain-delay routine.

So, no, the Blackhawks aren’t quite sure what they’ll do on Monday if they’re sitting around Busch Stadium waiting for the rain to stop falling and the Winter Classic to begin.

“I don’t know,” Corey Crawford said. “Batting cages, maybe?”

There is rain in the forecast for Monday, but the amount, duration and certainty have been changing on almost an hourly basis. The 2011 Winter Classic at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field was moved from an afternoon start to the evening the night before. With the uncertainty about Monday’s forecast, and fog and rain possible even in the evening, the Hawks and Blues might not be so lucky.

So it could make for a long day, either at the stadium or back at the hotel. The Hawks are the league’s most experienced outdoor team; they have played outdoors in the freezing cold, in the snow, in the sun and in the wind.

But they haven’t dealt with anything like this.

So while Patrick Kane knows not to dress too warmly no matter how cold it might be, and that the wind plays a bigger role than a first-timer might expect, and that if it’s too cold, the ice will chip and the puck will bounce in unpredictable fashion, even he is facing some uncertainty going into his fifth outdoor game.

“It’s one of the cool things about this time around – you don’t really know what’s going to happen,’ Kane

said with a chuckle. “You don’t really know how to prepare for it. Either way, once you get out there, it’s going to be fun and you’re going to be just playing hockey like any other day or regular game.”

A lengthy delay is the worst-case scenario, of course, and if the NHL can avoid it, it will. The Hawks at least got to scout Busch Stadium on Sunday.

They practiced on the rink, enjoyed a family skate afterward and started to get the lay of the land in the bowels of the stadium, discovering weight rooms, batting cages and all sorts of other facilities that few hockey arenas have – especially for visiting teams.

Brian Campbell joked he was going to look for a corner in which he could build a makeshift bed, just in case of a delay.

“We’re used to a regimented schedule,” he said. “You’ve just got to think positively about it all. Everything’s different. You know where you warm up in every building, but here you don’t.

You just have to embrace it a little bit.

Who knows what’s going to happen?”

Joel Quenneville downplayed any concerns about the start times, noting that the Hawks have played games at 11:30 in the morning, the middle of the afternoon, 6 p.m., 7 p.m. and even 8:45 p.m. in the postseason.

“If it starts at noon, it’ll be great,” Quenneville said. “If it doesn’t, both teams will adapt the same way.”

A pregame soccer game is a common part of the warmup routine for many players. Crawford said he hadn’t joined in one of them in 10 years, but might on Monday if he needs to stay loose. Whatever it takes. Because while it’s all fun and games, it’s also two big points against a heated division rival.

“When it comes down to it, it’s a serious game,” Andrew Desjardins said.

“It’s our livelihood, it’s our job. But you still want to have fun with it. You still want to enjoy this game. It’s still hockey and you still want to have fun with it.”

For the Forest Preserve District of Will County, there’s no business like snow business when it comes to the annual “Musher Mania” in Monee Township.

This celebration of Siberian huskies and the sport of sled dog racing, or mushing, will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Jan. 14, at Monee Reservoir, 27341 Ridgeland Ave. The Forest Preserve District event is offered in partnership with the Siberian Husky Club of Greater Chicago.

The free, family friendly “Musher Mania” goes on with or without snow as the dogs can pull wheeled sleds if Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate.

Activities at the 23rd annual event will include mushing demonstrations, snowshoeing activities and an ice carving show by World Class Ice, complete with “cool cubes” that contain toys for kids.

Attendees can meet and greet Siberian huskies during the event; photos with the amazing canines cost $7.

Popcorn, apple fritters and hot drinks will be available for purchase from Boy Scout troops 100 and 123. Inside the heated Monee Reservoir Visitor Center, the Great Race to Nome will be illustrated with activities and an exhibit, which includes information on great mushers throughout history. Winter-themed crafts and games will be offered throughout the venue.

Disney’s “Snow Dogs,” presented by Swank Movie Productions Inc., will be shown in a warming tent. The first 200 people to visit the warming tent will receive a free “Musher Mania” scarf.

A rescue group will be on-site with information about Siberian huskies that are available for adoption.

Clearly, if you have a child with asthma, moving him or her away from traffic would reduce the chance of a severe asthma attack.

I understand your concern. It also is a societal concern. Despite the evidence linking pollution to asthma, the levels of pollutants that are associated with an increased risk of asthma are well below the guidelines from the World Health Organization.

This doesn’t mean if you live near a freeway, you have to move. The majority of children who live near a freeway do not get asthma. But if your child already is showing signs of asthma at a young age, then moving to an area with fewer pollutants is something you should consider, if it is at all possible.

It took many years for our society to accept the ills of secondhand smoke from cigarettes. When it did, smoking was banned from many public places, even casinos. It is more difficult to ban housing near freeways or heavily trafficked areas, especially when that housing already exists.

Dear Doctor: We live near a freeway with a lot of traffic. Do I need to be worried about my kids developing asthma?

Dear Reader: This is a valid question.

Cars release a number of small particles into the air that can irritate the lungs. This particulate matter, in addition to nitric oxide and black carbon, has been associated with asthma. Children are more vulnerable to the effects of pollution because their lungs and immune system still are developing.

An analysis of many studies, published in the journal Allergy, found a significant association between traffic-related air pollution and asthma. The association was seen as early as the age of 1 and increased as the child became older. The rise in asthma as kids get older seems to be related both to structural changes that pollution creates in the lungs and also to the extent of time older children spend outside compared with younger children.

One other important aspect of asthma is it can be exacerbated by stress. Noise pollution and the danger of cars in close proximity may worsen asthma symptoms in children because they can create a more stressful environment. This is an important factor if your child already has asthma.

A recent study in Minnesota evaluated the number of asthma cases in the emergency room, in the hospital and in a clinical setting. The researchers then looked at the proximity of people to a major source of traffic. After taking poverty out of the equation, which in itself is a risk factor for asthma, the researchers found that, as traffic density increased, so did the number of asthma exacerbations, or worsening of

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY mother-in-law passed away two Jeanne years ago from Phillips lung cancer. My father-in-law hasn’t taken it well. This year at Christmas he fabricated a letter and gifts “from her” for the grandkids, as if she had written the letter and bought the gifts before she passed away. He did it without my knowledge.

I am angry and upset I was made part of this lie without my consent. I refuse to lie to my daughter about this and plan to throw the letter away. My daughter is 6 and doesn’t seem to understand. My husband doesn’t think it’s that big a deal and doesn’t know what he can do about it. I loved my mother-in-law, but I’m tired of dealing with this. This is not the first strange thing my father-in-law has done. I feel like I get no support from my husband, who won’t ever say anything to his dad. Your father-in-law appears to be grieving deeply for his wife, and he may not be able to work through it without the aid of a grief support group or a therapist. If his strange behavior continues, then for his own sake, he may need to be evaluated by his doctor, and your husband shouldn’t ignore it.

Dear Abby: Over the years, we have helped out our daughters as much as we could. One daughter, “Doreen,” has needed more help than the others. She has four children who are near and dear to our hearts. They have been living with us the better part of their lives.

Doreen married a guy who is the father of three of the children. (I’ll call him John.) He’s in trouble with the law constantly and can’t hold a job. After we moved them all in with us, John decided he wanted to move back home to his family, so he packed up everyone and left. We told Doreen we no longer could support them financially, and if they wanted to move away, they would assume that responsibility.

Now she’s writing us saying they can’t pay the rent and their electricity is being shut off.

She wants us to “loan” them money. We refused. Now we no longer can talk to, text, write, Skype or communicate in any way with our grandchildren. The SIL says we lost that privilege. My wife is distraught. Can we fix this?

Every year, the International Bridge Press Association selects prize winners in various categories. (I am one of the voting panel.) The bestplayed deal of the year is unfortunately far too complicated for this column. The strongest group, in my opinion, was defense. There were six entries worthy of winning, with one theme that occurred a few times -- see if you can spot it as the week progresses.

In this deal, Frederic Volcker (East) and Thomas Bessis from France were defending against three no-trump.

West led his spade, and East covered with the 10. What happened after that?

South had seven top tricks: two spades, three diamonds and two clubs. Keeping a club miracle for later if necessary, declarer sensibly decided to play on hearts. He ducked the first trick, won the second with his spade queen (West discarded a diamond), played a diamond to dummy’s jack and led a heart to his queen.

You or I would have taken that trick and, probably, returned a diamond. But Bessis played low smoothly, as if he had never heard of the ace.

South, suitably deceived, now led a low heart from his hand and played low from the board. East won with his jack and drove out the spade ace.

South, still convinced that East had the heart ace, tried the club finesse, but East took that trick and cashed his spades for down two.

A clever, no-cost defense, but South should have realized that if East had king-jack-10-seventh of spades and the ace-jack of hearts, surely, even at unfavorable vulnerability, he would have opened one spade or three spades.
