Exceptional service, satisfied customers There are some window and door companies that only sell, and do not actually install their products. Other companies do just the opposite. One visit to a customer’s home who bought a door from him only to have someone else install it upside down made it clear to owner Patrick McCann of McCann Window and Door that his company needed to do both.

they want and need someone who has the technical experience to walk them through the buying and installation process. I saw where there was a disconnect between buying windows and doors and having them professionally installed. Some people offered great products but no installation. Some installers offered great installation but did not know the technical side, and by that, I mean the right product for the application. We offer both,” McCann said.

So McCann Window and Door specializes in precisely those two things, utilizing their vast industry knowledge and exceptional customer service to see each project through to completion. With a “no games” approach, McCann’s customers appreciate the value of being walked through the entire process to find the right products at the right price for their home or business. McCann has 27 years of experience in construction material supply, and several industry certifications including LEED from the US Green Building Council. Having run two previous window and door companies for other people before starting his own, it’s more than just a business to Patrick. It’s a labor of love. “I’m in this business because I enjoy it. I appreciate the fact that people are making an investment in their homes and that

Be advised. There is a difference — with SVN.

The SVN Difference Neil Johnson opened SVN Landmark Commercial Real Estate in 2005 as a franchise of SVN International (formerly Sperry Van Ness). “It has been satisfying to provide our clients with the strength of a world-class firm, plus established local presence,” Johnson said. “I was attracted by the company-wide culture of collaboration and fairness, based on a strong ethical foundation.”

“Our clients benefit from the cutting-edge technology and marketing resources of a world-class company. Every property has its own website and international online distribution.” Listings above $1 million are presented live on a weekly online broadcast open to the entire brokerage community. The Lipsey Co. 2018 survey again ranked SVN as the No. 6 most recognized commercial real estate brand. SVN International has presence in every major U.S. market, plus several other countries. In addition to their hundreds of Illinois clients, SVN Landmark advisors have assisted sellers, buyers, landlords and tenants from other states including Arizona, California, Colorado, New York, Oregon and Texas. One example was the sale of a $12 million St. Charles, Ill. office building for a Florida seller to a Pennsylvania buyer. International clients have represented Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany and New Zealand.

“We are linked with over 200 offices representing specialists in every commercial asset type,” Johnson said. “As part of the SVN shared value network, we have developed relationships across the country. This powerful affiliation allows us to help our clients regardless of the location, size or type of commercial property.” For instance, Johnson co-listed an industrial property in Arizona with a colleague in Phoenix. As a restaurant tenant rep, Joel Miller has collaborated with SVN advisors from around the country. Resulting from a California SVN referral, Brian Haney sold an Illinois property for a Florida-based lender.

The SVN Landmark brokerage team in Geneva has proven success with investment sales, leasing and tenant representation. They have completed 750+ sale and lease transactions throughout Chicago’s suburbs, including retail, restaurant, office and industrial properties, plus vacant land. Clients have included private individuals, companies, lenders and even municipalities. SVN advisors are encouraged to be involved in their local communities. Johnson serves on the Geneva Chamber board of directors, plus other local business and civic groups, and is an active member of his church in Batavia, Ill.

Houndstooth & Plaid focuses on distinctive wrapping and gifts For Cherie McCarron, taking the time to find the right paper and accessories to wrap a gift is almost as important as the gift itself. With that philosophy she launched Houndstooth & Plaid, where the focus is on distinctive gift wrap. She and her staff strive to personalize each wrapped gift, working with a choice of various papers - including sustainable and recycled wrapping materials - as well as the ribbons, embellishments and unique handmade cards.

Kevin & Cherie McCarron, Owners

“I have always loved wrapping gifts,” McCarron says. “I feel there is just something special about giving and receiving something that someone took the time to make beautiful. With every fold, every ribbon tied, the gift giver thinks about the recipient, maybe the memories they shared, the way they might feel when they open the gift, how they feel about the person.” She and her husband, Kevin, are long-time residents of the Tri-Cities and are excited to fulfill a dream of opening a shop in downtown Geneva.

“I love making people smile,” McCarron says. “I love building relationships and getting to know people.”

And for those still searching for the perfect gift, Houndstooth & Plaid has a beautiful selection of gifts, many made by local artists including jewelry, soaps and vintage finds. The shop also has all the needed services to go with it: local pick-up and drop-off services, personalized local delivery and UPS, FedEx and USPS shipping. It also is a delivery destination for subsequent gift wrapping from any preferred online retailer. So stop in Houndstooth & Plaid and watch Cherie make you smile!

All in the name Paisano’s is a friend to the area

When Dick and Annette Theobald decided to open their own pizza business in Elburn, they needed a name, and they wanted it to reflect their philosophy.

Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill is a small sports bar named after a small baseball player, Eddie Gaedel, who was Grand Marshall of the Elburn Days parade in 1951. According to one of the owners, Annette Theobald, only a true sports fan would know about Eddie.

The bar opened at 117 N. Main St., Elburn, in May 2013.

To set the atmosphere, Eddie’s has three big screen TVs to watch your favorite sports. For the thirsty, Eddie’s features a great selection of craft beers and IPA’s, as well as the standard domestic and import beers; wine, martinis and their famous Eddie Mary.

SUNDAYS: Ultimate Eddie Mary’s Go a little crazy with our Eddie Mary MONDAYS: Burger and a Brew TUESDAYS: Tacos WEDNESDAYS: Seafood & Wine THURSDAYS: Smoked Brisket FRIDAYS: Lagunitas Beer Battered Fish Fry SATURDAYS: Hickory Smoked Spare Rib Dinner

“The Eddie Mary is our version of a Bloody Mary that, well, is a meal in itself,” Annette explained. “It has made a name for itself, and folks have traveled a distance to have one.” For an updated list of the beers carried by Eddie, go to and search Eddie Gaedel’s. “You can follow us on there and get an email whenever we update the beer menu,” Annette said. “We are also on Facebook, where we post updates to our beer menu and food menu.” “Our menu is always evolving,” Annette said. “Every time a customer comes in, there will be some of the same items as the last time they were there, but there will also be daily featured items.” The newest creation is “The Impossible Burger.” People travel from miles around for it.

LIVE C I MUFriS day Night

And something you’ll always find is delicious Paisano’s pizza. On Fridays they feature a Lagunitas Beer Battered Fish Fry; Saturdays include a Hickory Smoked Spare Rib Dinner; Sundays feature Eddie Mary Mania; Mondays enjoy a Burger and a Brew; Tuesdays feature Tacos; Wednesdays feature Seafood and Wine, and Thursdays are Smoked Brisket. To coincide with their philosophy of giving back to the community, Eddie’s has hosted several fundraisers since it opened its doors. They have an annual “Opening Day Celebration” that coincides with the opening day of MLB, where money raised is given to the Kidney Foundation on behalf of the Gaedel family. It’s their favorite charity. They also have live music on Friday nights. “It is sometimes difficult to find a place to eat that has a nice decor, great food and service, and is reasonably priced,” Annette said. “We do our best to have all three components. The success of our business comes from many things: having a great, comfortable atmosphere; great food; great team of servers and cooks; and being active in the community.”

”We picked the name Paisano’s because it means friend/fellow countryman in Italian,” Dick said. “We want to be a friend to the community and help out how we can.” They believe that a business has the responsibility to give back to the community. That’s what they’ve always done in Elburn, and the tradition continues with their new Sugar Grove location. “We appreciate our customers’ loyalty so much and how the community supports us, we like to support the community that we live in. Whenever someone or a group asks us if we can help, we do our best to do so,” Annette said. Paisano’s helps organizations from local sports teams to libraries, schools, churches, Boy Scouts, and various other community groups. A main reason their customers keep returning is Paisano’s community involvement and Paisano’s focus on quality, fresh food. They strive to use the freshest ingredients available—all of their vegetables are prepared and cut daily, and they make their own sauces—ranging from traditional pizza sauce to meat sauce, marinara, sweet and sour, barbecue, pesto and alfredo. The crusts are also homemade and come in a variety of styles, including thin, double dough, pan and stuffed. A gluten-free and a cauliflower crust are also offered. From September through May, enjoy the homemade soup. Virtually everything is made from scratch, and what they found is that everyone has their own personal favorites on the menu. “We have a full catering menu. We take special requests. We would love the opportunity to cater your gatherings. We also offer fundraising programs.” With Paisano’s sister business Eddie Gaedel Pub and Grill in Elburn, you can sit down to enjoy a pizza. That’s why they spend so much time trying to give back. Local RE/MAX Office Honored Supporting Their Agents and The Community

Hank Erwin and Paulette Peiffer, owners of RE/MAX Excels in Geneva, recently received the Broker/Owner of the Year award for RE/MAX of Illinois. As one of 117 offices considered for the award, RE/MAX Excels attributes this honor to their 40 outstanding agents who nominated Erwin and Peiffer for the award. “We are lucky to work in an office where everyone is treated like family,” said Excels agent Leslie Kiesel. “We volunteer together, work together, solve problems together and celebrate together. It is a rare thing these days to have an office that is more than just a place of business.” “Hank and Paulette have created a culture that is successful, professional, lively, full of integrity and fun,” added Excels agent Kathy Brothers. “In this competitive industry, to have an owner in your corner is essential! Hank and Paulette are those people – extremely knowledgeable, accessible, fair and ethical. They will go the extra mile for you at all times,” explained Excels agent Mary Reuter. At RE/MAX Excels, Erwin and Peiffer go beyond providing support, training, and guidance for their agents. Office get-togethers and volunteering as a team allow their agents to enjoy a tight-knit community where the feeling of camaraderie is the norm. “We support our agents and treat them like family. We Move People 6 Years/72,000 Miles Transferable Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty

he goal of the Fox Valley Auto Group, Fox Valley Volkswagen St. Charles, Fox Valley Volkswagen Schaumburg and Fox Valley Buick GMC St. Charles is to sell and service new Volkswagen, Buick and GMC vehicles and all makes and models of pre-driven vehicles.

Abinion began selling vehicles to help pay for college and fell in love with the business. His first dealership was Landmark Ford in Niles, IL for 16 years. Vice President, Pre-driven Vehicle

Their focus toward providing superior customer service and excellent ownership experience has allowed Fox Valley Auto Group to expand over the years.

Their mission is to move people. But this is not about selling their customers a vehicle and repairing the ones they already have. It is about much more than that and it is certainly much more than two simple words. They want everyone who is in contact with their team members every day to be MOVED. Moved in many ways, but always for the better — better than before their engagement with them — whether it is financially, spiritually, emotionally as well as professionally.

Emir Abinion, Founder, President & CEO, Fox Valley Auto Group

“We want to move people to a better place in their lives just by dealing and working with us,” said founder, President and CEO Emir Abinion. “Imagine the impact we can have on people’s lives with this as our focus. This is what it truly means to be of service.”

Director and Partner Shakeel Omar, operated a successful pre-driven automotive retail store in Chicago, IL for over 16 years. Long-time friends, Abinion and Omar met when they were selling cars together at Golf Mill Ford in the mid-1980s.

Abinion added a new Volkswagen dealership in West Chicago in 2006, which in 2016 moved and expanded to a 40,000 square-foot facility in St. Charles. Fox Valley Volkswagen Schaumburg opened in 2008 and recently underwent a significant remodel both inside and out to enhance the customer experience. Fox Valley Buick GMC of St. Charles opened in 2011.

In 2016, Frank Butnaru, who worked for Abinion in sales at Landmark Ford, was named as a second partner and is the General Manager of the Volkswagen dealership in Schaumburg. The two are long-time friends, as well.

In 2012, Volkswagen awarded Abinion the Volkswagen Diamond Pin Award, a recognition bestowed on only four dealers in North America and 70 Volkswagen dealers world-wide, for their overall commitment to the brand and its customers. They were again recognized in 2015 with membership in Volkswagen’s Customer First Club. This accolade recognizes the dealership as a top performer in customer satisfaction on a national level. The two things that drive Abinion are finding ways to make it better and more convenient for the dealerships’ customers to do business with them, and how can they serve the community better. Fox Valley Auto Group has three locations and approximately 160 employees. Together, Fox Valley Auto Group sells about 5,000 vehicles and services over 54,000 vehicles annually. Abinion said the secret to his dealerships’ success is to treat people like he would want to be treated and to be a value through service to his customers and community. “This comes first before any vehicle is sold or serviced,” he said.

Over ninety years later, the company remains focused on providing its customers with service that exceeds their expectations. “The company was originally formed to fill a need for affordable property insurance in a rural area,” said manager Kathy Rice. “We still feel we offer a competitive product for our policy holders today.” The company provides property insurance coverage for farms, homes, rental properties, condos, tenants, structures under construction, as well as certain types of boats and RV’s. Equipment Breakdown Coverage can be added to your homeowners, farm owners or rental dwelling policies at a reasonable cost. The company has several convenient payment options as well. It is a small company that markets its products through various independent agencies, and remains based in Geneva, originally selected because it was the seat of Kane County. While much has changed during the past 90+ years, the company’s current leadership understands what has helped Kane County Mutual stand the test of time. “We maintain good relationships with our agents and our policy holders,” Rice said. When you call our office you will always talk to a real person.” Kane County Mutual Insurance, a Grinnell Mutual member, takes pride in being a farm mutual insurance company, owned by the policy holders, which helps keep premiums reasonable, since there are no stock holders to satisfy. For the future, the company plans to pursue controlled, sustainable growth by adding more agencies throughout Northern Illinois, where it does business. The company understands that those plans for the future can only occur if it remains focused on what it values most, its customers.

Give Your Pets The Best In Vet Care K

oyal Companions is a pet-centric veterinary practice providing state-of-the-art care in a FearFree environment. This results in more pleasant visits for beloved pets and their people. Loyal Companions is passionate about elevating the care your pet receives to the next level. Dr. Vicki Petsche has practiced veterinary medicine for 22 years and has worked in several veterinary hospitals in the Chicago suburbs, as well as in Miami, Fla. She settled in the Fox Valley area 15 years ago, and has been practicing in this community ever since. Loyal Companions Animal Hospital and Pet Resort is a full-

service veterinary hospital that also offers luxury overnight lodging, day care, grooming and training classes. The style of the building allowed Dr. Petsche to design the animal hospital and pet resort of her dreams. As an added bonus, there is a spacious yard for the lodging and day care pets to get outdoor exercise. Dr. Petsche’s love for animals began at a very young age. She started riding horses when she was five years old, and throughout her childhood spent her time caring for her family’s pets — dogs, cats, hamsters, horses and a goat. It was here, as a little girl in rural Michigan, that she decided to become a veterinarian. Dr. Petsche has aligned herself with the recently developed Fear-Free initiative, and Loyal Companions is one of the first animal hospitals in the country to have the whole staff become Fear-Free Certified Professionals. Special attention has been paid to the smallest details of the new hospital’s design to ensure every pet’s experience at Loyal Companions is calming and pleasant. Loyal Companions Fear Free certified staff employ numerous scientifically based techniques to keep pets (and their

people!) calm and stress free while they receive veterinary care. This includes an innovative hospital design, which gives cats their own section in the hospital so they never have to see, hear or smell a dog. Cats and dogs have their own separate entrances. Additionally, the new animal hospital design has eliminated the waiting room, as this can be the area where most pets and their people become stressed. Upon arriving, pets and their people are ushered into spacious exam rooms, each with a window to allow for natural light, proven to improve wellbeing. Scientifically proven to produce calming effects, speciesspecific calming music and pheromones are diffused into each room. To ensure pets equate only positive experiences with coming to Loyal Companions, owners are asked to bring their pets to their appointments hungry so tasty treats or food can be provided throughout the exam and procedures. Loyal Companions is proud to be an AAHA Accredited Hospital. They are in the top 12% of hospitals nationwide and

Loved by his players, KC not only teaches them fundamental skills, but provides players with the ability to think for themselves on the court. Kane County Jrs. has provided many All Conference and All Area High School players that came through their club program. One thing that sets the club apart is the fact they accept and embrace athletes that also participate in other sports or activities. There Only When You Need Us

ight at Home is like a family caregiver except that caregivers are available 24/7 for all of a client’s care needs, whether for an hour visit or live-in care. Right Care, Right at Home is there when clients need help and out of sight when they don’t.

every day, with a typical day including a variety of meaningful cognitive and physical activities, in addition to assistance with the basic activities of daily living.

Right Services include Companionship Care and Homemaking, Physical Assistance, Hygiene, Wellness, Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care Services, Non- Medical Home Care, Respite Care and Health Reminders.

An innovative dementia care system uses Montessori-like activities based on the client’s stage of dementia to improve quality of life in a home setting.

Right at Home was founded by Allen Hager, a hospital administrator who watched many of his patients — especially seniors — leave the facility and return home, but not necessarily a return to health. Once home, many of Hager’s former patients were unable to care for themselves.

To ensure quality care, managers round with clients and caregivers regularly and conduct supervisory visits. Each month, respected home care research company Home Care Pulse conducts satisfaction surveys with a percentage of caregivers and clients. Families can track care provided using an operating system portal to view schedules, telephone records, daily care notes and invoices.

Creating Right at Home in Omaha, Nebraska in 1995, Hager branched into other regions of the country by carefully selecting franchisees who shared his passion for caring for those in their community.

Aging isn’t easy — not for the person getting older nor for their family. New challenges arise almost daily. Right at Home simplifies daily living for families in need. Owners, office staff and direct caregivers fulfill Right at Home’s promises to clients every day:

Right at Home currently has more than 500 locations serving tens of thousands of clients across the United States and internationally. Brian and Kathy Wetters opened their first local office in Batavia, Illinois in 2003 to provide home care services to clients in Chicago’s Far West Suburbs, opening a second office in Naperville several years later to serve the southwest suburbs. Both Brian and Kathy have experienced the stress of being long distance caregivers to elderly parents and truly understand a family’s concerns when it comes to making big decisions regarding long term care for a loved one. Right At Home’s mission statement, “to improve the quality of life for those we serve,” begins with Right Care — a comprehensive approach to delivering the care your loved one needs. Starting with the Right People, Right at Home seeks employees who are professional and passionate about caregiving, only hiring the top 15% of applicants. Nine years ago they said it couldn’t be done. Create a locally-owned salon offering professional hair care and products at affordable prices, and MEGAN serve the community. Walter Gould, owner of Flip Family Hair Care in Geneva proved them wrong. Today, Flip has become one of the most successful independent salons in the Fox Valley, thanks to the loyalty of his experienced staff and clients who keep coming back. Many of the stylists and customers have been with Flip since almost the beginning.

From Day One the salon has grown by helping customers look and feel their best, affordably, while truly giving back. DAW N Flip contributes to the community by promoting charity events, including food and clothing drives. It helps local businesses by promoting them on Flip’s website and in its salon. Flip even has a large bulletin board for community notices.

Since 2003, Operation Support Our TroopsAmerica has grown into one of the largest volunteer-based military support organizations in the country. The local Naperville-based nonprofit has shipped nearly two million pounds of goods to troops deployed in dangerous places around the world. The organization will hold its 12th annual Rockin’ For The Troops celebration of the military on July 14 in the music garden at Northwestern Medicine Field, home of the Kane County Cougars in Geneva. Proceeds benefit the organization’s mission to support the morale and well-being of American forces and their families. Doors open at 3:00 PM and the show will feature five artists with ties to the military: 7th Heaven, Ayla Brown, Rockie Lynne, Ryan Weaver and The Voices. Attendees will also enjoy special tributes to all branches of the U.S military, raffles and much more. Operation Support Our Troops started off small, in the dining room of Bill and Deb Rickert. The goal was to provide comfort and care to troops deployed overseas following the attacks on 9/11. The four-star ranked Charity Navigator nonprofit has now grown into a multitiered organization, offering a lifetime of services to active duty service members, veterans and their families. While they’ve kept a sharp focus on supporting the morale of deployed troops with care packages, the organization has broadened its vision. The Allen J. Lynch Veterans Assistance Program offers temporary financial support to veterans struggling to make ends meet; The Leap of Faith Program empowers families of fallen heroes to live their life in a “New Normal” by offering a three-day seminar focusing on living their life to the fullest. Day one is a full-day seminar with a psychologist and the OSOTAmerica Leap of Faith Team. The Reserve of Geneva

One of the Assisted Living philosophies of The Reserve is to help with residents’ daily activities so that they can enjoy what they love to do with a renewed appreciation, focus, and energy. While their attention is focused on their passions and leisure, they do not have to manage their day-to-day care alone.

hen you first think of independent or assisted living, the phrases “extended family”, “peace of mind”, and “stress-free” may not immediately come to mind. But those - and much more - are exactly what can be expected at The Reserve of Geneva. Located at 2508 Kaneville Road, the amenity-rich Reserve of Geneva is a not-for-profit community that just celebrated its 12th anniversary. Moving forward it will continue to provide a wide range of services and amenities that meet the always-changing needs of both current and residents.

“The Reserve is a more personal community that promotes physical and social well-being,” said Bridget Shaeffer, The Reserve’s Director of Marketing. “Our boutique environment cultivates an atmosphere where residents view their neighbors and our caring staff as extended family.”

For its first 11 years, The Reserve of Geneva was strictly an independent living community. But the Board of Directors chose to accommodate the changing needs of residents, and decided that more services could be made available. As a result, The Reserve became licensed by the State of Illinois last year to provide a full array of assisted living services. With specialized, tailored care that is set in a peaceful community atmosphere, residents enjoy an excellent quality of life.

The Reserve of Geneva was built and is managed by Essex Communities, a company with more than 40 years of distinct experience in creating and managing some of the most respected senior living communities in the country. Essex has always strived to choose serene, comfortable and useful locations for their facilities, with the idea of creating the feel of being in one’s own back yard. Such is the case with The Reserve’s location at Kaneville Road and Fargo Boulevard, which provides residents not only a calm,

tranquil setting, but also easy access to beautiful and historic downtown Geneva. Featured there are a plethora of restaurants, shops, and entertainment venues to enjoy – just minutes away! The community features multiple well-designed floorplans that are tailored to fit individual comfort levels and styles. Additionally, The Reserve offers a multitude of amenities including a library, coffee shop, hair salon, fireside lounge, billiards room, arts and crafts studio, woodworking shop, and movie theater. Another pillar of The Reserve’s concept focuses on the value of interpersonal relationships. Communication and friendly, personal connections are paramount to any relationship. The staff takes the time to personally get to know each resident and they truly enjoy each other’s company. The resulting relationships that are forged among the residents and staff form a bond that becomes deeper than friendship; it is very much like extended family. Recognizing the needs and concerns of current residents, as well as prospects, we continue to work to accommodate the changing needs of those who

Stress-Free Independent & Assisted Living live here,” Shaeffer said. A special feature of The Reserve of Geneva Assisted Living is their customizable program which is designed to seamlessly address and facilitate the regular updates in care that residents may require. Because of their ability to adapt and respond to the changing healthcare landscape, it is no surprise The Reserve was the winner of the Best of the Fox in the Retirement/Assisted Living category in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. They take the time to listen and understand each resident’s individual needs and create a plan to specifically address them. “From the moment you walk through our front door you will feel the intimate atmosphere,” Shaeffer said. “We want you to be comfortable, happy and enjoy your personalized quality of life.”

ustin’s Violin Shop makes, repairs, sells and rents the four orchestral stringed instruments— violin, viola, cello, and bass—and offers a wide range of music, stands and accessories. Their courier service travels throughout the Chicagoland area. Owner Patricia Austin began playing the violin in fourth grade and continued to study music at Northern Illinois University. There, she also studied violin-making with Mr. Harold Walker

in DeKalb. Patricia began teaching Suzuki violin to students in 1975. In 1981, she and her husband, Dana, opened Austin’s Violin Shop in a ramshackle house on Wheeler Road—very humble beginnings! In 1986, the Austins moved their shop to its current location on Wheeler Road. Their business continued to grow, along with their family of eight children. The location presents easy access to several area studios and schools. Working out of their home also gave Patricia the opportunity to be close to her children while teaching full time. Dana converted the garage into a working shop for meeting with customers, as well as for luthier services. Upon Dana’s passing in 1994, Patricia took over the violin shop and gradually transitioned from full-time teaching to running the shop. The Austin’s oldest daughter, Honna, currently provides lessons in the studio two days a week, as well as at a large strings studio in Batavia. Daughter Holly graduated from the violin-making school and is now a luthier at the shop, and son Joel aspires to become a luthier.

goes turbo-charged for summer fun! Anyone seeking thrills and chills at the pool this summer need venture no further than the junction of Campton Hills and Peck Roads in western St. Charles. With new, fun-tastic attractions like the Racer Slide, Turbo Slide with Freefall Launch and the Sport Spot for water hoops and other games, Otter Cove Aquatic Park is a summer sweet spot to rival any resort water theme park. “We know that Otter Cove is a summer, daytime destination for families in St. Charles, the entire Fox Valley and even further surrounding areas,” said Jennifer Bruggeman, assistant superintendent for recreation.

that helps the Park District responsively improve features and amenities.

The Racer Slides are designed for some splashy competition among friends. Up to three people can race side by side with a timing system to track their speed.

“For some time now, patrons have been asking for more amenities that offer excitement and thrills for adolescents and adults,” said Bruggeman. “Those are exactly the challenges we brought to our design firm to help us resolve.”

“Competition is an engaging feature and the Racer Slides were just what we were looking for,” said Steve Gard, Aquatic Supervisor at Otter Cove Aquatic Park. “Moving beyond the idea of friends racing down individual tube slides to see who finishes first, a single race slide has a starting line and timing system so racers can share results at the finish line.”

And with its trio of new, action-oriented amenities, Otter Cove is destined to become the place to go – and we mean go! – for wild water times. Start off at the Turbo Slide with its Freefall Launch. Built for speed, this water flume allows a single rider to experience the adrenaline rush of a short freefall before plunging down the tube. Riders will hold onto a bar above the starting seat and, when directed by the slide attendant, let go. The slide drops through the center of the surrounding Racer Slides and has a special finish that enhances the rousing freefall effect. A sand/water play area and sand volleyball court are perfect spots to take a break from fun in the pool, and The Dive Concessions can help fuel whatever activities are on deck. “It is important to staff to maintain the quality and appearance of the facility and commit to improvements that will help the Park stay relevant and exciting,” said Bruggeman. Otter Cove is now open. Visit www. for information about daily admission, group rates and other seasonal deals and activities.

In addition to the Racer and Turbo Slides, this year Otter Cove expanded its ropedoff, deep water free space in the Frog Bog Activity Pool to accommodate water sports enjoyed by tweens and teens. Known as the Sport Spot, the addition of a basketball hoop encourages even more water sport play. Such competitive and spine-tingling activities are part of a growing trend in aquatic park design, according to industry insiders. ouse of Fireplaces aspires to be your “one-stop fireplace shop,” where we can meet all of your fireplace needs, from complete installation of new fireplaces to technical support and advice. We offer gas, wood and electric fireplaces, gas logs, inserts, custom glass doors, custom mantels, granite, marble, cultured stone, installation and superb service. Come see our newly-updated and re-designed showroom. Our expansion will be completed by the end of summer, with 15 additional burning units. Marvel at our dramatic new centerpiece, the Heat & Glo True masonrystyled direct vent fireplace, our new line of durable Broilmaster grills, and all our new displays and products. We’ve made a major investment to make your shopping experience even better. Showroom manager Kevin Sandell represents the third generation of the Sandell family business. Kevin manages the retail side of the business while his father, Mark Sandell, manages the wholesale side. Founded in 1953 by Stanley Sandell after

his return from the Navy in World War II, the business began as one of the first distributors of the Thulman wood burning fireplace. When Thulman turned into the Majestic Fireplace Company, the business took the name Majestic Distributing. Originally a strictly wholesale company selling the Majestic Fireplace to builders and heating contractors, we opened our first retail outlet in 1963—and House of Fireplaces was born. Kevin, who started at the bottom sweeping the warehouse after school as a kid, worked summers and winters while going to school. He started working full time shortly after graduating college with a degree in business

administration, and took over showroom operations in 2010. “We have been selling fireplaces since the very beginning of the air-cooled prefabricated fireplace,” Kevin said. “We have seen the industry go from one manufacturer to hundreds, from three fireplace choices to thousands. Throughout this evolution, we have continued to adapt to the changing tastes by adding more options, brands and choices for the customer.” We offer the best fireplaces, and with the most knowledgeable employees, the best possible customer service before and after the sale. We go the extra mile in customer service. One of our funniest and most memorable experiences happened when a customer came in with his wife to look at gas logs. He really liked the gas grills, but she was not interested in the grills. So they looked at log sets and left. A couple days later, the wife returned, saying she would

like to buy the grill for her husband as a surprise birthday present. She bought the grill and asked us to hold it until they came back for a log set. Later that week, the husband returned by himself and said he would like to buy the grill without his wife knowing about it. Somehow, we managed to hold him off on buying the grill. It ended up being a great surprise for him when they came in to get the gas log set, and he saw the grill with a big bow on it. Looking ahead, we are excited to discover how the fireplace industry will change and what new things there will be. We would like to see an increase in our in-house manufactured products, perhaps including a millwork shop for in-house custom mantels or a metal shop for high quality chase tops.

Why Choose a STEAM Focused Education for Your Child? “Is my child ready for elementary school?” If you’re the parent of a young child, or children, chances are you’ve asked yourself this question. In today’s world, we want to make sure that we’re giving our children every advantage and opportunity that we can, and that means ensuring that their education begins early—and gets off to the right start. We want our children to be ready to face the challenges of life and the ever-changing world around them. Today’s kids benefit from being entrepreneurial and adaptable. They need to be makers and doers, not just thinkers. That’s why many schools are embracing the STEAM philosophy (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math). This educational approach is defined by project-based learning and integration of the arts and sciences. Project-based learning connects academic skills to practical application, so learning is meaningful to children’s lives. Also, collaboration and communication enhance social and emotional development. STEAM learning stimulates innovation, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. It encourages children to think about what they’re learning in a more connected, holistic way. Through STEAM, children develop the skills and attributes to navigate the world around them. • Science nurtures inquisitive minds and inspires curiosity. • Technology encourages working with tools (both digital and otherwise). • Engineering promotes problem-solving skills. • The Arts help children express ideas and communicate. • Math guides children to apply logic and understanding to systems. Even the littlest learners, including infants, thrive from STEAM learning. Just like scientists, very young children learn about the world around them by experimenting and trying new ways of doing things. The bonds they form with warm, nurturing teachers and the stimulating environment of a safe, engaging classroom form a strong foundation for STEAM learning. We keep you cool & breathing easier

“I plan to be a Patriot customer for life.” -- Dawn Pratt

t was a very hot day and the young dad was frantic. The air conditioning had gone out and he was in a panic to keep his wife and new baby cool. So he called Patriot Heating and Cooling Services. Many other folks were having trouble with their air conditioning then, too, so Patriot’s team was booked all day. But that wasn’t going to stop owner Bill White from serving his customers. Long after he sent his crew home for the day, Bill was still working. He went out at 10 p.m. to help the young family, and soon discovered the problem. The circuit breaker was off. After flipping the switch, he got the house cool again — and at no charge. Even though he made a house call late at night, it just didn’t feel right to charge them, Bill said.

A Rotarian for 20 years, he truly believes in Rotary’s “service above self” philosophy. He has volunteered to build water wells in Kenya. He is active with a local group that helps the needy with home repairs, and wants to get more involved in the community. “I want to lead a life of significance, putting people before profit,” he said. He shares that

vision with his staff. So all are trained to give exceptional customer service, and “do the best for the customer, not what’s best for Patriot,” Bill said. All technicians are drug-screened and background-checked. Most have been tested and certified by the nation’s largest non-profit HVAC certification group, North American Technician Excellence (NATE). Not only does Patriot offer exceptional service from a skilled staff, it also handles great brands with warranties like Rheem furnaces and air conditioning, Aprilaire humidifiers, and Honeywell and A/C Ecobee controls. system Patriot also check installs UV lights only and electronic air Includes $100 off on cleaners. repair and $400 off

That’s what he calls, “Doing the right thing, at the right time, every time.” Bill has been in the heating and cooling business for eight years, and unfortunately has seen more than his share of what not to do. “There’s a customer service void in our industry,” he said. Not returning phone calls, showing up late, using high-pressure tactics. So when he started his firm three years ago, he was determined not to do things that way.

“Now, as part of our focus on exceptional client service we offer comprehensive duct cleaning services. The health and safety of our clients is critical and making sure they are breathing clean air is one of our goals. We know in most cases the air inside your home is filled with toxins and particulates that just keep circulating around the home. A comprehensive duct cleaning is a first step to correcting that,” White said. Bill’s firm strives to be an expert, but with technology always changing, that can be elusive. So Patriot keeps up with industry advances, while never losing sight of the fundamentals — good quality heating and cooling. He reminds people that he “got in business to help people, so when you work with Patriot Heating and Cooling, you won’t be disappointed.”

As a growing business in the area, Caroline is currently looking for active senior men and women (as young as 40) to be part-time, paid employees for her team. “I have incredible helpers that include very talented and loving senior caregivers,” Caroline said. “I have a wonderful pianist, two woodworkers, great cooks, retired teachers and nurses, and even an active Senior League baseball player! They are all truly inspirational people who simply want to stay active and help others.” testimonial “Our Mother, who is 89 years old with balance issues, has SHS caregivers every day and some overnights as well. They provide loving, compassionate, capable care for Mom and each bring their own personal flair and talent with them. Because the caregivers are mainly comprised of active seniors, they are able to relate to Mom’s advanced years both in conversation and experience. Additionally, because Caroline hires folks from our area, we have found many common ties with familiar connections in the community and people Mom has known over the years. My brother and I are very happy with SHS in every way. And most importantly, our Mother is as well!” -Sue S. of Geneva, IL

Do You HATE Going To The Dentist? Are you embarrassed to smile? Is it time to schedule an appointment? According to Dr. Kim, “Excellent and complex dental care requires a significant investment of time. Patients who are sedated are not aware of how long they have been in the chair during an appointment, which enables them to remain relaxed and comfortable throughout longer procedures.”

There are countless reasons why people choose not to visit their dentist as often as they should, but the vast majority of them fall under a single category: fear.

Not only can patients benefit from sedation dentistry during an individual dental appointment, but it can also lead to a reduction in fear of the dentist.

To help people overcome their fear of the dentist, the team at Modern Dentistry in Sugar Grove are proponents of “sedation dentistry.”

“Positive dental experiences help to build a trusting relationship between an anxious patient and the entire dental team,” Kim explained. “It is not uncommon for anxious patients to require less expensive sedation or anxiety reducing procedures in the future, as they have gained confidence that dental therapy is not something that needs to be dreaded.”

Dr. Joseph Kim has performed thousands of sedation procedures. Most patients come to him by word of mouth. “We have many patients come from out of state for sedation and extensive dental treatment,” said Patient Care Coordinator Michelle Schultz.

He said that many patients find themselves finally able to return for their every-six-month exam and cleaning and are able to do so without the same level of fear and anxiety they originally had.

Dr. Kim said that the fear of dentists can sometimes cause anxiety so great that they lead to physical symptoms: panic attacks, sweating, nervousness, nausea. “Patients this fearful have a hard time even speaking on the phone with us to make an appointment,” Kim said.

“This promotes not only a healthy mouth, but also boosts the patient’s self-esteem and confidence,” Kim said. “It’s always amazing to see the transformation of patients who were embarrassed of their teeth. The emotional and financial investment that anxious patients make in their oral health is rewarded with a positive self-image in their healthy, new smile.”

This fear is often caused by either general phobia of the dentist, or it can be caused by a traumatic past experience or dental condition causing embarrassment or humiliation. Sadly, avoiding preventive and early treatment often turns smaller problems into serious diseases such as gum disease, painful and infected teeth, and further deterioration of their smiles.

For patients with great anxiety, Dr. Kim’s team often suggests IV sedation. For those who have a general fear of the dentist or just want to have a lot of treatment done at once, oral sedation is also available. Both have an amnesia component to them, so they have very little to no memory of the dental visit.

Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients facing this level of fear of dentists. However, there are things other people face that also can benefit from sedation dentistry. For some, their gag reflex is so severe that a patient requires sedation in order to have a treatment done. Other general reasons for sedation dentistry include people who need a lot of treatment to be done but do not want to return for multiple visits, and people who travel for work or cannot miss a lot of work due to dental treatments. In those cases, aided by sedation dentistry, more treatments could be done in fewer appointments.

“Sedation dentistry has helped many patients overcome their fears and allowed them to have the treatment they need,” Dr. Kim said.

He encourages fearful patients to take advantage of a no-obligation, free sedation consultation. “With our free sedation consultations, fearful patients have one less reason to put off their dental health for another day.”
