Bird is the Word specializes in the breeding, handfeeding, rearing and sale of baby parrots and other exotic birds. They also offer cages for sale, food, both seeds and pellets, as well as bird toys, accessories and other related products. Boarding services are available year round. Wing and nail trims are offered Saturdays and Sundays, and well-bird clinics with a veterinarian four times a year. The business is conveniently open seven days a week. Haugk has owned Bird is the Word for 26 years. She opened the Batavia location in 1995. With more than 2,100 square feet, there is room for a kitchen/nursery, as well as boarding and breeding rooms. Founded in 2003, Kane County Jrs. Volleyball Club is a program to provide the potential, balance and growth of young athletes. The club strives to provide players the opportunity to develop in the sport to their full athletic ability. Kane County Jrs. Volleyball Club is a private club located in Elburn training girls and boys, ages 12U to 18U. The 4-court facility has plenty of space to offer up to 100 athletes quality practice time. The club aims for 9-10 players per team, allowing each player to get experience while participating in leagues and tournaments in the greater Chicago land area. Some teams even travel to major volleyball events around the country. Getting the most out of each player is the goal for Head Coach KC Johnsen. KC had a very successful run as Varsity Coach at Geneva High School for 13 years leading the school to many Conference Championships for the girls and boys programs while he was there. Loved by his players, KC not only teaches them fundamental skills, but provides players with the ability to think for themselves on the court. Kane County Jrs. has provided many All Conference and All Area High School players that came through their club program. One thing that sets the club apart is the fact they accept and embrace athletes that also participate in other sports or activities. The club asks that the player balance their time between club volleyball and their other interests. They practice three times per week for 14U and up and twice per week for 12U. The girls season runs from late November to mid-June. The boys start tryouts in August and the season ends at the end of February. Kane County Jrs. has partnered with Sports Recruits, a platform to help athletes that want to continue their volleyball career in college. Sports Recruits opens access to every college and university in the country at every level. D1, D2, D3, NAIA and Junior College. The most recent title win was at the Asics Junior Nationals Championships held in Chicago at Navy Pier in June 2018 was due to the hard work and intense play of
the Kane County 18 Gold team. Since 2003, Operation Support Our TroopsAmerica has grown into one of the largest volunteer-based military support organizations in the country. The local Naperville-based nonproﬁt has shipped nearly two million pounds of goods to troops deployed in dangerous places around the world. The organization will hold its 12th annual Rockin’ For The Troops celebration of the military on July 14 in the music garden at Northwestern Medicine Field, home of the Kane County Cougars in Geneva. Proceeds beneﬁt the organization’s mission to support the morale and well-being of American forces and their families. Doors open at 3:00 PM and the show will feature ﬁve artists with ties to the military: 7th Heaven, Ayla Brown, Rockie Lynne, Ryan Weaver and The Voices. Attendees will also enjoy special tributes to all branches of the U.S military, rafﬂes and much more. Operation Support Our Troops started off small, in the dining room of Bill and Deb Rickert. The goal was to provide comfort and care to troops deployed overseas following the attacks on 9/11. The four-star ranked Charity Navigator nonprofit has now grown into a multitiered organization, offering a lifetime of services to active duty service members, veterans and their families. While they’ve kept a sharp focus on supporting the morale of deployed troops with care packages, the organization has broadened its vision. The Allen J. Dana converted the garage into a working shop for meeting with customers, as well as for luthier services. Upon Dana’s passing in 1994, Patricia took over the violin shop and gradually transitioned from full-time teaching to running the shop. The Austin’s oldest daughter, Honna, currently provides lessons in the studio two days a week, as well as at a large strings studio in Batavia. Daughter Holly graduated from the violin-making school and is now a luthier at the shop, and son Joel aspires to become a luthier.

Kevin, who started at the bottom sweeping the warehouse after school as a kid, worked summers and winters while going to school. He started working full time shortly after graduating college with a degree in business
administration, and took over showroom operations in 2010. “We have been selling fireplaces since the very beginning of the air-cooled prefabricated fireplace,” Kevin said. “We have seen the industry go from one manufacturer to hundreds, from three fireplace choices to thousands. Throughout this evolution, we have continued to adapt to the changing tastes by adding more options, brands and choices for the customer.” We offer the best fireplaces, and with the most knowledgeable employees, the best possible customer service before and after the sale. We go the extra mile in customer service. One of our funniest and most memorable experiences happened when a customer came in with his wife to look at gas logs. He really liked the gas grills, but she was not interested in the grills. So they looked at log sets and left. A couple days later, the wife returned, saying she would
like to buy the grill for her husband as a surprise birthday present. She bought the grill and asked us to hold it until they came back for a log set. Later that week, the husband returned by himself and said he would like to buy the grill without his wife knowing about it. Somehow, we managed to hold him off on buying the grill. It ended up being a great surprise for him when they came in to get the gas log set, and he saw the grill with a big bow on it. Looking ahead, we are excited to discover how the fireplace industry will change and what new things there will be. We would like to see an increase in our in-house manufactured products, perhaps including a millwork shop for in-house custom mantels or a metal shop for high quality chase tops.

Not only can patients benefit from sedation dentistry during an individual dental appointment, but it can also lead to a reduction in fear of the dentist.
To help people overcome their fear of the dentist, the team at Modern Dentistry in Sugar Grove are proponents of “sedation dentistry.”
“Positive dental experiences help to build a trusting relationship between an anxious patient and the entire dental team,” Kim explained. “It is not uncommon for anxious patients to require less expensive sedation or anxiety reducing procedures in the future, as they have gained confidence that dental therapy is not something that needs to be dreaded.”
Dr. Joseph Kim has performed thousands of sedation procedures. Most patients come to him by word of mouth. “We have many patients come from out of state for sedation and extensive dental treatment,” said Patient Care Coordinator Michelle Schultz.
He said that many patients find themselves finally able to return for their every-six-month exam and cleaning and are able to do so without the same level of fear and anxiety they originally had.
Dr. Kim said that the fear of dentists can sometimes cause anxiety so great that they lead to physical symptoms: panic attacks, sweating, nervousness, nausea. “Patients this fearful have a hard time even speaking on the phone with us to make an appointment,” Kim said.

This fear is often caused by either general phobia of the dentist, or it can be caused by a traumatic past experience or dental condition causing embarrassment or humiliation. Sadly, avoiding preventive and early treatment often turns smaller problems into serious diseases such as gum disease, painful and infected teeth, and further deterioration of their smiles.
For patients with great anxiety, Dr. Kim’s team often suggests IV sedation. For those who have a general fear of the dentist or just want to have a lot of treatment done at once, oral sedation is also available. Both have an amnesia component to them, so they have very little to no memory of the dental visit.
Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients facing this level of fear of dentists. However, there are things other people face that also can benefit from sedation dentistry. For some, their gag reflex is so severe that a patient requires sedation in order to have a treatment done. Other general reasons for sedation dentistry include people who need a lot of treatment to be done but do not want to return for multiple visits, and people who travel for work or cannot miss a lot of work due to dental treatments. In those cases, aided by sedation dentistry, more treatments could be done in fewer appointments.
