DIXON – The school board will have a lot more than cookies to digest this holiday season. At Wednesday night’s meet-
such a taxpayer an extra $345 to $475 annually, depending on how it’s financed. Building a brand-new school would cost an extra $319 to $446 per year. The board was presented with two referendum options: a bond measure, and a 1 percent
sales tax measure. “The first bond referendum, it’s absolutely critical that we do that first,” board Vice President Jim Schielein said. The bonds could be issued over a 20-year maturity timeline, or a 25-year span, the latter
costing taxpayers less per year. Regardless of whether to build new or renovate, Schielein backs putting the bond referendum on the November ballot, then coming back in the spring with the sales tax measure. SCHOOLS CONTINUED ON A7

DIXON – There could be a lot riding on the public’s opinion for the Park Board. Not only is the Dixon City Council seeking public feedback on the March 15 primary ballot on the idea of dissolving the board and consolidating the park district as a city department, the board itself will seek the public’s feedback on the same ballot, asking for its opinion on finding more ways to partner with other entities, including the city. But if the board does find those new partners, it will do it without one of its own. Nicole Pritchard resigned from the board Wednesday, saying in a letter of resignation that she could better serve the district as a volunteer, rather than as a board member. Deb Carey, the district’s executive director, read Pritchard’s letter of resignation during Wednesday’s meeting before the board voted unanimously to place a question on the ballot asking voters whether the board should create additional partnerships with the city, other governmental entities, private businesses and non-profit organizations. “There used to be black-andwhite lines between the YMCA, schools, park districts, townships and cities,” said Carey. “Fortunately, that is not the fact anymore.” OPINION CONTINUED ON A7
