Clean Line wins Illinois OK Energy transmission project still seeks Iowa’s approval BY KATHLEEN A. SCHULTZ kschultz@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5535
The Illinois portion of the Rock Island Clean Line energy transmission project, which will cut through parts of Whiteside and Bureau counties, was approved Tuesday, Clean Line Energy Partners LLC said in a news release this afternoon. The Illinois Commerce Commis-
sion unanimously approved an order to grant Rock Island Clean Line LLC, a subsidiary of Clean Line Energy, a certificate of public convenience and necessity. That will allow the company to build and operate a 121-mile transmission line in Illinois as part of a new 500-mile direct current electric power line. If similar approval is granted by Iowa, the line will deliver 3,500 megawatts of
wind power from the northwest Iowa area to Illinois, the release said. It would begin in north central O’Brien County, Iowa, and end at a Commonwealth Edison substation in Grundy County, Illinois. In the Sauk Valley area, it would include 8 miles in Whiteside County between Hillsdale and Erie, and run the length of Bureau County. CLEAN LINE CONTINUED ON A2

STERLING – Not only did Darla Schueler pick up a turkey dinner during the 14th annual Thanksgiving Basket Drive. She also braved cold temperatures to pass out food to needy people. “It’s a way to give back to the needy, and it’s for a great cause,” said

DIXON – A cement plant that has been idle since December 2008 has approached the city about reopening. About 90 employees lost their jobs when St. Marys ceased operations almost 6 years ago. A few workers have remained to oversee the plant’s use as a distribution terminal. Dixon Mayor Jim Burke said representatives from St. Marys approached him about 5 months ago to discuss restarting manufacturing operations. The talks were in very early stages, so he was surprised to see the company’s recent classified ad in Sauk Valley Media publications looking for more than 65 workers, he said. “We’re optimistic, and it would be a great thing to have the plant up and running again,” Burke said. That’s a wrap – and a big, early one Before you attack those Black Friday sales, be sure to look inside today’s Gazette. Our biggest weekday edition of the year, made extra plump with a special “early bird” section and holiday advertising inserts, will help you prepare for the retail blitz that will follow the turkey and cranberries. Because of the large number of advertisements in today’s edition, our deadlines were early Tuesday. That kept us from including Tuesday night’s Lottery numbers and coverage of sports events. We’ll catch up on those in Friday’s edition. No newspaper will be published Thanksgiving Day.
