DIXON – Yellow police tape and squad cars surrounded a home on Joliet Way in Woodland Shores Tuesday afternoon as Lee County Sheriff’s deputies investigated an apparent murder-suicide. The body of a 71-year-old woman was found inside the home at 1612 Joliet Way around 2:40 p.m.; she was stabbed to death by her grandson, Lee County Coroner Jesse Partington said. Her 27-year-old attacker, who lived with her, was found covered in blood on the front lawn with a knife. After Lee County deputies took the knife from the man, he was taken to KSB Hospital, where he died of self-inflicted wounds, Partington said. Autopsies are set for 10 this morning, after which their names will be released, Partington said. Woodland Shores is about 6 miles west of Dixon off Rock Island Road. In a text message, Lee County State’s Attorney Anna Sacco-Miller confirmed a man was found in the front yard around 2:40 p.m. and taken to KSB, and a knife was retrieved. She declined to provide further information.

ROCK FALLS – Retired businessman George Logan Jr. was appointed Tuesday to fill the 1st Ward aldermanic seat vacated when Mark Vandersnick moved outside the district. The council approved Mayor Bill Wescott’s recommendation of Logan, who was one of four finalists for the seat. Wescott said the new alderman’s extensive business background was a big plus. “George can bring a lot to the table,” Wescott said. “He has a diverse business background, and he does things with integrity and honesty.” Logan, 64, a Rock Falls High School graduate, has called several cities home during his business management career. His father, George Logan Sr., is a former Rock Falls fire chief, having served with the department for 35 years. The younger Logan followed in his father’s footsteps when he joined the Sterling Fire DepartGeorge ment after receivLogan Jr. Retired ing a bachelor’s degree in busi- businessman ness administra- fills seat recently tion from Car- vacated by Mark thage College. In 2013, Logan retired from Ocala, Fla.-based E-One, where he was vice president of commercial operations. He moved from Ocala back to the Sauk Valley about a year ago, and says he is happy to be home. “I transferred for work a lot,” Logan said, “and I really wanted to come back home to where my family is when I retired.” LOGAN CONTINUED ON A5
