Cass St., Joliet www.RoadToRock.org Rock on down the road to the Illinois Rock & Roll Museum on Route 66, a multilevel museum and performance space whose mission is to preserve the history of musicians and bands with ties to Illinois. New exhibits are being installed on the second floor, but the first-floor exhibit gallery and gift shop are currently open to the public six days a week.

The Rock & Roll Museum’s gift shop is home to official Route 66 passports, limited edition T-shirts, buttons, magnets, books and much more. Many of the items tie into the region’s storied connection to Route 66 and the rich musical history of Illinois. Explore artifacts from some of the past Illinois Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honorees, including such seminal rock bands as Cheap Trick, Styx, Chicago, REO Speedwagon and artists like Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy and John Prine.

Joliet has long been a destination for train-watching enthusiasts.

Celebrate this locomotive heritage at the new Joliet Railroad Museum — located within the city’s Gateway Center Train Station. The Railroad Museum is housed in a former circa-1913 interlocking signal tower, known locally as Union Depot Tower, which was preserved and incorporated into the new Gateway Center Train Station. The museum features information on the railroad companies that operated lines through Joliet and their enduring legacies. It presents the story of collaboration, cooperation, and engineering that went into the 1910–1912 track realignment and elevation project, which included the construction of historic Joliet Union Station and Union Depot Tower. The Railroad Museum also features the mechanisms and controls that coordinated the movement of trains through this critical intersection of east–west and north–south rail travel.

Explore one of the newest museums in Joliet – The Planinsek Grocery and Meat Market Museum preserves, shares and interprets the Slovenian immigrant experience, their role in community development, and their lasting cultural impact on the city through the lens of the Planinsek family.

4. THE OLD JOLIET PRISON 1125 Collins St., Joliet www.JolietPrison.org Looking to experience an authentic piece of the city’s history first hand? The Joliet Area Historical Museum is now offering a series of special guided tours at the famed Old Joliet Prison. Originally constructed in 1858, this gigantic limestone penitentiary remained in operation until 2002, and has famously been featured in movies like “The Blues Brothers.”

This facility isn’t just steeped in fascinating pop-culture history; in its early years, Joliet held a mixture of regional offenders and Civil War

POWs. After its closure, operation of the vacant facility was taken over by the Joliet Area Historical Museum, which now offers a series of special guided tours at the famed correctional facility.

JOLIET IRONWORKS Columbia St., Joliet www.ReconnectWithNature.org When you visit the Joliet Iron Works Park, you’d never guess that this was once the site of the second-largest steel mill in the U.S. Opened in 1869, Joliet Iron and Steel Works employed over 2,000 laborers until its closure in 1936. Adopted by the Forest Preserve District of Will County, this factory-turned-natural space now boasts almost 2 miles of paved trail and serves as an access point for the 12-plusmile I&M Canal Centennial Trail.

Interpretive signage takes visitors through the heyday of this site’s industrial history. Sheltered picnic areas (with electricity), fresh water, and bathroom facilities can be found on-site.

6. ROCK RUN PRESERVE 3669 Black Road, Joliet www.ReconnectWithNature.org Explore Illinois as it was centuries ago at Rock Run Preserve, a wetland prairie with direct access to the I&M Canal. Conveniently located just outside of Joliet, this park is a major destination for those looking to picnic, fish, hike and bike a rambling 320+ acre site. You’ll find a diverse natural habitat featuring wetlands, prairie and forest landscapes, open to the public year round.

BIRD HAVEN GREENHOUSE & CONSERVATORY 225 Gougar Rd, Joliet www.JolietPark.org Escape into nature’s beauty at Bird Haven Greenhouse & Conservatory — an enchanting Italian Renaissance-style gem nestled within Joliet’s lush Pilcher Park. From vibrant seasonal floral displays to a year-round tropical oasis and cacti room, this historic destination offers a breathtaking experience for nature lovers and garden enthusiasts alike!

8. I&M CANAL STATE TRAIL Parking near the intersection of Mound Rd & Brandon Rd. www.IAndMCanal.org Running through three counties — Will, Grundy, and LaSalle — the Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail is one of the most historic natural spaces along the Route 66 corridor.

A popular biking and hiking trail, visitors can enjoy fishing and other activities along this mid-19th-century waterway.

Popular winter activities like snowmobiling and cross-country skiing can also be enjoyed along the canal. All these great outdoor activities can be enjoyed on this 79-mile former mule trail. A precursor to Route 66, the I&M Canal was once the most important transportation hub for commerce and passengers in Illinois. After the development of the railroad, this long-forgotten commodity was transformed into a spectacular outdoor recreation area.

he Gemini Giant, one of the longest standing and most beloved sights along Route 66, has officially returned to the Mother Road! This legendary 438-pound fiberglass giant has a new permanent home at South Island Park, 201 Bridge St., Wilmington.

One of the many iconic “Muffler Men” dotted along Route 66 and other tourist routes across the country during the midcentury, the Gemini Giant is beloved for its unique space-age theming and quirky color palette. These molded fiberglass advertising giants, named after the mufflers the original statues held in their hands, have become a staple of Americana since their invention in the early 1960s by boatbuilder Steve Dashew and his International Fiberglass company.

While thousands of these Goliath figures would be scattered across the country in the decade they were produced, few have established the fan base of the Gemini

Giant. Named after the Gemini space program, this custom fiberglass figure sports a silver, torpedo-like astronaut helmet and, instead of a muffler, holds a rocketship in his hands. The Gemini Giant is one of the first true oddities of Route 66 and of the road’s must-see photo ops – ranking on countless travel lists alongside the likes of the Blue Whale of Catoosa, Oklahoma and the surreal Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, Texas.

“The Gemini Giant’s homecoming marks an extremely important milestone for Route

66. Entering on the route’s 99th year, the Gemini Giant’s homecoming will be the first Centennial Certified Route 66 event,” said Wilmington’s Mayor Ben Dietz. “Having the backing and full support of the federal Route 66 Centennial Commission is truly an honor, and I know the Gemini Giant is up to the task of leaving a lasting impression on all those that get to see him.”

At an unveiling ceremony in November 2024, Route 66 enthusiasts from across the country gathered to be among the first to see the newly repainted statue. Now sporting its original iridescent dark green paint job and installed on a Route 66 shield-themed concrete base, the giant is officially on view for all to enjoy. Visitors will be treated to a new walking path, a digital message sign, native landscaping, interpretive signage and a new parking lot – making it easier than ever before to get a photo op with this titan of The First Hundred Miles.

The Route 66 signpost is flanked by two checkered flags and interpretive signage welcoming travelers coming from the west and wishing happy travels to those starting their journey along The First Hundred Miles. This marker is across the street from The Art Institute of Chicago and just a short walk from Millennium Park.

l ROUTE 66 COMMUNITY MONUMENTS 20 Locations Along The First Hundred Miles One of the most exciting new photo op hunts you’ll find along the modern Mother Road is Heritage Corridor Destination’s 3D Route 66 Shield Sculptures. These enormous 3D metal sculptures have been placed in popular Route 66 towns running from Chicago to Pontiac, creating a massive chain of selfie spots celebrating The First Hundred Miles. l TWO CELL JAIL 400 E. Mazon St., Gardner You can experience what it was like to “cool down” in the Two Cell Jail that was in use during the heyday of Route 66. Constructed in 1906, and not closed until the late 1950s, this small-town attraction is open to the public and features historical signage explaining its history.

l BRAIDWOOD ZOO 140 N. Front St., Braidwood The Braidwood Zoo is a prime example of the vintage roadside kitsch that once peppered Route 66. The zoo features a menagerie of animal sculptures built by late artist Jack Barker, who utilized scrap metal, wood and plastic to fashion the figures. After his passing, locals banded together to create this roadside attraction to highlight Barker’s folk art achievement. The zoo includes a band of about six animals, including a bright yellow giraffe, a pink elephant and an impressive longhorn steer.

l AMBLER’S TEXACO GAS STATION West Waupansie Street, Dwight Built in 1933 and named for its longtime owner, Ambler’s Gas Station is a Route 66 gem. Lovingly restored, you can learn all you need to know about the Mother Road and more at this information kiosk and gift store. Ambler’s starts their tourism season on May 1; call 815-584-3077 for current hours of operation. Widely regarded by Route 66 enthusiasts as one of the best restored service stations along the Mother Road, this is a great destination to pull up and snap some selfies.

l WALLY’S NEON SIGN 1 Holiday Rd., Pontiac

l OUGHTON ESTATE WINDMILL 101 W. South St., Dwight Built in 1896, the Oughton Estate Windmill was one of the largest of its kind in the United States at the time of its construction. Located on the grounds of the Oughton Family Home, the 110-foot windmill tower was bought by the Hogan family in 1996 and then transferred to the Village of Dwight for historical preservation. Since then, this towering mill has landed a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. For fans of windmills and eclectic architecture, this is a great spot to pull over and snap some photos.

l STANDARD OIL GAS STATION 400 S. West St., Odell While you can’t buy gas at this classic service station, you can still pull up in your car for a picture celebrating an iconic sight along the Mother Road. Built in 1932, the restored Standard Oil Gas Station in Odell is regularly open for tours. You’ll also find a great selection of Route 66 merchandise inside the station. Restored by the Illinois Route 66 Association, the standard oil building is now on the National Register of Historic Places.

This should be on every motorist’s bucket list as a must-see along the route.

Illuminating the sky, boldly announcing that you’ve found the ‘Home of The Great American Road Trip’, the towering Wally’s sign is an amazing mix of classic neon and modern LED signage. This impressive sign, which welcomes guests to Pontiac’s new full-service gas station and eatery, is best photographed during and after dusk, when you can see all the details that harken back to 50’s and 60’s designs.

l BOB WALDMIRE BUS 110 W. Howard St., Pontiac Now permanently parked at the Route 66 Museum in Pontiac, you’ll find Bob Waldmire’s former modified school bus/living space on display outside the museum. Said to have inspired the character ‘Filmore’ from the classic Pixar film ‘Cars’, Waldmire was an itinerant artist and conservationist, who could be seen driving his deeply personalized

art cars along the Mother Road for many decades. While at the museum, be sure to also grab a photo of his Volkswagen Minibus, and read about the history of this local legend who delighted the world with his art and love of Route 66.

l WORLD’S LARGEST ROUTE 66 SHIELD MURAL 100 W. Howard St., Pontiac Dubbed the “Quintessential Route 66 Photo Op,” this outdoor mural is known as the largest Route 66 Shield in the world, aptly painted on the back of the building that houses the Route 66 Association’s Hall of Fame. The hall is home an outstanding collection of Route 66 memorabilia, including artist Bob Waldmire’s Land Yacht, a legendary VW bus that served as the inspiration behind “Fillmore” in Pixar’s 2006 film “Cars.”

Built in 1933, this filling station served Route 66 until it was shuttered in 1999, making it the longest operating gas station along Route 66. Restoration (without services) was completed on this cottage-style station in 2007.

ODELL STANDARD OIL GAS STATION 400 W. South St., Odell Although Odell’s Standard Oil Gas Station no longer sells gasoline, this beautifully preserved service station has been converted into a welcome center for the Village of Odell.

n 2024, TheFirstHundredMiles.com readers joined Joliet’s own WJOL morning radio host Scott Slocum for another road trip across America via the legendary Route 66. Starting Monday, June 3, Slocum embarked on a two-week trip traveling the entirety of Route 66 – this time with a twist: Scott departed from Santa Monica, California, and drove the route in reverse, culminating in a live broadcast at Rialto Square Theater in Joliet. Dubbed “Great American Road Trip 2.0,” this sequel was powered by The First Hundred Miles, Heritage Corridor Destinations, D’Arcy Buick-GMC and Enjoy Illinois.

“2023’s trip was met with so much excitement and positivity from the WJOL listening audience that we knew doing it again would create even more interest,” Slocum said.

“We just scratched the surface in year one, and the ‘Great American Road Trip 2.0’ gave us a chance to dig even deeper into the history of Route 66.”

Like the first year, Slocum hosted 10 live radio remote broadcasts from 10 new cities along the Mother Road. Live segments took place in Oatman and Holbrook, Arizona; Tucumcari, New Mexico; Shamrock, Texas; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Springfield, Missouri; and the three Illinois cities of Edwardsville, Springfield and back home in Joliet.

Between broadcasts, Slocum and trusty driver Kev made numerous pit stops to capture the essence of Route 66 through interviews with its legendary personalities and about iconic landmarks. Videos from the road can be viewed on www.

The importance of the route is rooted within its cultural and historical impact beginning in 1926 when it received its numerical designation. The Illinois Route 66 Mining Museum is a hidden gem of pure Americana in the small village of Godley. With only 600 residents, Godley was put on the map in 1864 by the discovery of “black diamonds,” which sparked the central Illinois coal rush. A tragedy in 1883 resulted in the death of 74 men and boys, an event that played a major part in the formation of the United Mine Workers Union in 1890.

This small but fascinating micro-museum is open to the public Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Take a step back in time to America’s Gilded Age, when silver and gold leaf were all the rage. Gilding, a metal coating process that dates back to Ancient Egypt, is on display front and center at this unique downtown museum. However, The First Hundred Miles of the Mother Road is also lined with unbelievably beautiful parks and natural prairie. From heart-pounding adventures like ziplining and mountain biking to serene natural activities like bird watching and fossil hunting, there’s outdoor fun to be had around every bend in the road. Here’s an itinerary that connects you with the best places to experience “The Prairie State” along this historic route.

l HARVESTER PARK PLAYGROUND 15 W. 400 Harvester Dr., Burr Ridge Located a stone’s throw from historic Old Route 66 and close to Interstate 55, this park is home to a themed playground that offers an amazingly detailed themed play environment that’s a hit with parents, caregivers and kids.

Simulating a trip along the Mother Road, Harvester treats park-goers to an interactive cross-country journey across several pieces of play equipment, all designed to look like roadside stops on Route 66. Highlights include The Tower, a multi-tiered jungle gym that’s lined with faux steel girders and radio towers, and a climbing tunnel that pays tribute to the classic Blue Whale attraction in Oklahoma.

Hammel Woods

A popular biking and hiking trail, visitors can enjoy fishing and other activities along this mid-19th century waterway. Popular winter activities like snowmobiling and cross-country skiing also can be enjoyed along the canal.

People can pursue all these great outdoor activities on this 79-mile former mule trail. A precursor to Route 66, the I&M Canal was once the most important transportation hub for commerce and passengers in Illinois.

After the development of the railroad, this decommissioned commodity was transformed into a spectacular outdoor recreation area.

l THE FORGE: LEMONT QUARRIES 1001 Main St., Lemont Get ready for some real adventure at ‘The Forge’ in Lemont, Illinois. Built in and around the Lemont Quarries, this area is action packed, offering rope courses, ziplines, climbing walls, mountain biking and an assortment of running trails, perfect for entertaining visitors of all ages and abilities.

And if zipping down a cable does not pique your interest, then you and your family can enjoy the outdoor dining and picnic area where you may catch some music or other seasonal entertainment.

l I&M CANAL STATE TRAIL Access Huse Lake near Joliet Street & Route 351, Peru Running through three counties (Will, Grundy and LaSalle), the Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail is one of the most historic natural spaces along the Route 66 corridor.

Lake Renwick Preserve

l LAKE RENWICK PRESERVE 15425 Joliet Rd., Plainfield Just off Historic Route 66 in Plainfield and a few blocks away from the village’s bustling downtown, Lake Renwick Preserve is home to a sprawling 200-acre lake and wetland habitat. Wildlife found at the preserve includes a variety of bird species, such as the great blue heron and great egret. Birders flock to the Heron Rookery Nature Preserve each year to marvel at herons, egrets and cormorants, bald eagles, American white pelicans and hundreds of eclectic winter waterfowl. Access to Heron Rookery Nature

Des Plaines Dolomite Prairies

Preserve is limited on a seasonal basis to protect the nesting activities of migratory birds, but Lake Renwick’s Copley Nature Park and Turtle Lake Access areas remain open year-round, providing spectacular frozen winter views and paved paths.

l HAMMEL WOODS 554 Brook Forest Ave., Shorewood Located on Old Route 66 in Shorewood, Hammel Woods provides tubing, canoeing and kayaking down the picturesque DuPage River. Visitors also can enjoy a run along the park’s 1.6 miles of natural surface trails.

Additional activities permitted at the park include cycling, hiking, running, in-line skating, fishing and cross-country skiing when weather permits. Covered shelters can accommodate 25 visitors on a first-come, first-served basis with no need for a permit. If you’re a fan of Geocaching, Hammel Woods is a great place to stop for a quick hunt.

l DES PLAINES DOLOMITE PRAIRIES LAND AND WATER RESERVE 24621 N. River Rd., Wilmington With a free skeet shooting and archery range, Des Plaines Dolomite Prairies Land and Water Reserve is a unique and diverse sporting park.

With over 5,000 acres of land and 2,000 of water, there is plenty of room to enjoy your favorite pastimes, like horseback riding, jet skiing and boating. The Des Plaines Dolomite Prairies Land and Water Reserve is known as an excellent spot for hunting and fishing, provided you have all the necessary licensing to do so. The park also features a peaceful selection of on-site camping, which can be reserved online.

l MIDEWIN NATIONAL TALLGRASS PRAIRIE 30239 S. Route 53, Wilmington Known as “The Largest Prairie Restoration Site East of the Mississippi River,” the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Preserve also is the single largest open space in Illinois.

Managed by the U.S. Forest Service and recognized as a U.S. National Grassland, bison were reintroduced back on the prairie in October 2015, making this gorgeous plot of prairie even more authentic. While it’s not guaranteed, every visit offers the opportunity to see these elusive animals as they roam throughout the prairie.

l MAZONIA-BRAIDWOOD STATE FISH AND WILDLIFE AREA-FOSSIL HUNTING Route 53 & East Huston Road, Braceville/Braidwood Get your hunt on at Mazonia-Braidwood State Fish and Wildlife Area, one of the nation’s foremost destinations for public fossil hunting. Findings have included marine fossils like jellyfish, worms and the infamous Tully Monster, with Mazon Creek fossils holding prominent places in some of the most important fossil collections in the world. The famous Pit 11, the largest and most productive fossil area in the park, is still open to the public (October to April, provided you’ve signed the correct permit). This open area encompasses a few thousand acres of rocky terrain, so make sure you dress accordingly; wear sturdy shoes, head coverings and bring a backpack or bucket for your findings.
