DIXON – They came despite the heat. They came despite the humidity. They came despite the manual labor and 8 a.m. wakeup call. Oh yes, they came. On Saturday, United Way of Lee County hosted its first Day of Caring, a full day of volunteer projects completed at nonprofit agencies in the county. And, man, did they do some good. More than 20 projects were taken on by 160 volunteers who put in 800 total volunteer hours. They sorted and collected 1,351 children’s books. And, to top it all off, Dixon firefighters installed 66 smoke detectors in people’s homes, free of cost. CARE CONTINUED ON A3
STERLING – Adam Gee, an eighthgrade teacher at Challand Middle School, said students will be able to take charge of their learning this school year. Roughly 770 students at Challand will have access to iPad Air tablets. The students will be able to use the devices in school and at home. And while students say they are looking forward to getting the iPads, teachers at Challand say the tablets will change they way they instruct students. “Students will be able to learn at a speed and level that is beneficial to them,” said Gee, who teaches social studies.
