SERVING ROCK FALLS, STERLING AND THE SURROUNDING AREA SINCE 1854

WHITESIDE COUNTY | ‘FRIEND OF THE FAIR’

‘Labor of love’ to be recognized Award to honor Morrison men Friday BY ANGEL SIERRA asierra@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5695

MORRISON – Two longtime fair volunteers will have another reason to smile this week as the 144th Whiteside County Fair gets underway. On Friday at the “Friend of the Fair” presentation, Paul Vock and Dan Heusinkveld, both of Morrison, will be honored for their years of service and support. “We were selected by the other board members, basi-

The two, a humble pair of hard workers, exemplify the qualities the board looked for in “Friend of the Fair” candidates, an award that has been celebrated for 25 years.

Vock was a farmer before he retired, and Heusinkveld had worked for the Whiteside County clerk’s office since 1954. Both have been involved with the fair for more than 35 years. “It’s services, work and ideas,” Heusinkveld said. “It’s what keeps the fair going and keeps it fresh.” “I was a farm kid,” Vock recalled. “We were poorer than church mice back then. … Everybody was.” FAIR CONTINUED ON A4

MILLEDGEVILLE – A man was injured while watching the demolition derby Saturday night at the Carroll County Fair. Christopher M. Heisler, 32, of Milledgeville, was watching the event when a piece of metal from one of the cars flew into the stands, striking him in the chest. The metal had to be pulled out from his chest. Officials believe a car motor might have blown apart, propelling the metal toward the crowd. Milledgeville Police Chief Jim Haag said Milledgeville Fire Protection District personnel, who were on scene for the derby, initially responded in the stands and then requested aid from Mount Carroll paramedics. “The paramedics were also already on the grounds because of the event, so help came quickly,” Haag said. Heisler was taken to CGH Medical Center and then transferred to Rockford Memorial Hospital. He was in fair condition Sunday night. The demolition derby was not stopped while the emergency was handled, and the event was completed. Fair officials declined to comment on the incident Sunday.
