Lincolnway Staples closing Management says doors will be shuttered Aug. 29 BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
STERLING – The Staples at 4311 Lincolnway will close at the end of August, a local store
manager confirmed Thursday. The manager, who did not wish to be identified, said inventory is being transferred to other stores, and clearance sales will begin Saturday. Management declined to
say how many employees work at the Lincolnway store. The Sterling office supplies store is one of many nationwide that have been lost to a wave of consolidation in the industry. In April, Staples announced
it would acquire its main rival, Office Depot, in a $6.3 billion deal. In 2013, Office Depot paid $1.2 billion for Office Max, one of its chief competitors. STAPLES CONTINUED ON A3

• While state sees increase in visitors overall, its capital sees a dip, A11 Wednesday, the Blackhawk Waterways Convention & Visitors Bureau, based in Polo released overall economic impact numbers, and the region saw a yearover-year spike of 6.6 percent, or about $159 million, in travel expenditures.
“I’m very encouraged by it,” Executive Director Diane Bausman said. “It’s what I keep saying – the leisure traveler is looking for us, and we make a great destination.” Ogle County leads the charge with a healthy swell of 9.4 percent over 2013 visitors, while Carroll, Whiteside, and Lee counties saw increases of 7.4 percent, 5.1 percent, and 1.8 percent, respectively. DIXON – Matt Sowers announced bold ideas for launching his own taxicab business at the top of Tuesday’s council meeting. He hopes to start a service that gets anyone anywhere in town for $6 flat; half that for senior citizens, free for kids. His cabs also would take credit card payments, Sowers said. “It’s really simple,” Sowers said, adding he used to work for a local taxi service. “It’s getting someone from one point to another. I see this as an opportunity to earn a living and offer employment opportunities for other people.” There’s one major hurdle, though. It’s not the competition, finances, or even council members who indicated they liked Sowers’ proposal. It’s the law. CABBIE CONTINUED ON A4
