DIXON – Heroin is on the rise in America; there’s no question about it. And the Sauk Valley is
anti-drug program that will be started throughout Lee County schools in the fall. The program is the brainchild of both Lee County State’s Attorney Anna Sacco-Miller and Ashton Chief of Police Darrell Farringer. “I’ve had the idea for a long time but haven’t had time to
put anything together,” Sacco-Miller said. “So when [Farringer] came to me and told me that he wanted to do this in Ashton-Franklin Grove schools, and said he wanted to have a uniform program that other areas could use, too, in the county, I told him I would be 100 percent on board and
that I would be talking to some of the other chiefs to see if they would join us.” Since Sept. 1, 2007, local police have made more than 80 arrests for heroin and have seen more than 20 heroin overdoses. HEROIN CONTINUED ON A4

No timeline for disputed community center Project in works, parks official says BY DAVID GIULIANI dgiuliani@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5525
PROPHETSTOWN – Three years ago, the Prophetstown Park District quietly bought a property where it could build a community center. The plan was to start construction in 2013 and finish it in a year, but ground has yet to be broken.
$1.00
“We don’t have a set timeline,” said Karyn SommersBuck, the district’s director, who started a year ago. In the spring of 2011, the park board voted 4-1 to buy the old Jailhouse restaurant and bar for $110,000. It later demolished the structure so that it could build the center, which would be near the park district’s recreation center. Officials said Prophetstown needed a community center for banquets, weddings and

other social events. But some residents accused the board of buying the property without letting the public know beforehand. The board said people could have found out if they had attended the board’s meetings. Opponents of the purchase, however, said no one from the public attended meetings at the time, so the purchase happened without public feedback. At one point, the opponents

launched an effort to disband the park district and transfer it to the school district. Sommers-Buck said most people supported the building purchase, with only a handful opposed. This year, she said, money will become available for the community center once the district pays off a loan. “We won’t have to raise taxes,” she said. TIMELINE CONTINUED ON A5

STERLING – Sauk Valley Landlord Association is sponsoring a public meeting to discuss the proposed rental inspections program for Rock Falls and Sterling. The meeting is planned for 7 p.m. May 7 in the activities room at Coventry Village, 612 St. Mary’s St. The landlords will also explore their options for responding to the proposed program to Mark which the Searing sponsoring Rock Falls organization building inspector has voiced its opposition, said Rod Kleckler, president of the Sauk Valley Landlord Association. “The best option would be to get the aldermen of these cities to drive around to properties with us and get a realistic idea of what this program will and won’t do,” Kleckler said. The organization has not ruled out a legal response, if the program is instituted. “We’re looking for a report to come back soon from a local law firm,” Kleckler said. “From our initial contact, they didn’t like the language.” LANDLORDS CONTINUED ON A4
