SERVING ROCK FALLS, STERLING AND THE SURROUNDING AREA SINCE 1854

2015 ELECTION

Fulrath wins, but board loses a member Dual winner won’t serve on 2 boards, wants to avoid potential conflict of interest with Sauk board BY JEFF ROGERS jrogers@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, EXT. 5591 @EDITORJEFFSIR

ROCK FALLS – Dennis Fulrath said he wasn’t sure that he’d win one election, let alone two, on Tuesday. But since he won two races, he

said, he had a decision to make. So, on Thursday he notified Whiteside County Clerk Dana Nelson that he would not serve the term he was elected to on the Rock Falls High School Board. Instead, he will serve the 6-year term that he won on the Sauk Valley Com-

munity College Board of Trustees. Fulrath said he had been in contact with the state attorney general’s office about a potential conflict between the two elected positions. He also said he had conversations with Nelson and the Whiteside County state’s attorney’s office.

The attorney general’s office had previously determined in an opinion that it would be a conflict to serve on two boards in the same taxation district that exchange contracts. Sauk and the Rock Falls High School district contract for dual credit courses. FULRATH CONTINUED ON A4

SEVERE WEATHER | LEE & OGLE COUNTY

Tornado touchdown Fast and furious: Funnel cloud tears through area towns BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier

FLAGG CENTER – As terrifying as Thursday night was, there are no casualties to report in Ogle or Lee counties. Not even the VanVickle family dog. Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle addressed media at Flagg and Center Roads northwest of Rochelle about 9:45 p.m., in the wake of tornadoes touching down in the two counties, part of a severe weather system that whipped through northern Illinois and eastern Iowa. He said 18 to 20 homes were either gone, or completely destroyed. His home was in the latter group. “My house is gone,” he said during the staging. TORNADO CONTINUED ON A2

Debris from a demolished shed lies in the yard of the home at 2061 Gurler Road in rural Ashton. It was one of many Lee County properties hit by a tornado that passed through the area Thursday evening.
