SERVING ROCK FALLS, STERLING AND THE SURROUNDING AREA SINCE 1854
STERLING | UTILITY INCREASE
Rate hike requested Utility company says improvements drive bid for 18 percent increase BY PAM EGGEMEIER peggemeier@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5570 @pam_eggemeier
STERLING – Illinois American Water filed an application with the Illinois Commerce Commission on Thursday to raise rates for water and sewer service in all of the company’s Illinois operating districts, including Sterling.
If state regulators grant the full 18 percent rate request, the typical residential customer in Sterling, based on usage of 4,500 gallons of water per month with a 5/8-inch meter, would see their water bill increase by an estimated $7.57 per month, from $41.57 to $49.14. That doesn’t include taxes, franchise fees, and fire protection charges. Sterling is the only municipality in
the area serviced by American Water. The investor-owned utility acquired the Sterling water operations in 1999 from another private company, Northern Enterprises Inc. The city assumed responsibility for water billing in May 2012, when American Water stopped doing it in all of its municipalities. INCREASE CONTINUED ON A9

Cancer fundraiser spreads like crazy Students’ methods may be fun, but their message is serious: Let’s beat the Big C BY CHRISTOPHER HEIMERMAN cheimerman@saukvalley.com 815-625-3600, ext. 5523 @CHeimerman_SVM

STERLING – Finding a cure for cancer is serious business. But local school districts are making it look mighty fun. Students are buying up T-shirts. They’re chucking trucks with reckless abandon. They’re stuffing their hard-earned cash into jars in hopes they’ll get to crack an egg on their teacher’s head, or send said teacher to the veritable gantlet that is the Blazin’ Wings Challenge.
It’s all part of Crazy for the Cure, a fourth-year fundraiser that started in Sterling schools and has since swept up nearly all of Whiteside County. Last year, Erie schools joined the party, and both school districts already are in the throes of fun. Next week, the festivities get going at Rock Falls, Morrison and Prophetstown schools. Newman Central Catholic High School will bring it home in the third week of February. FUNDRAISER CONTINUED ON A9
