46 dogs, saved from slaughter, come to N.Y. from South Korea

NEW YORK – Forty-six dogs were flown to New York from South Korea after being rescued at a farm where they were to be slaughtered for human consumption, animal advocates said Sunday.

The Humane Society International is responsible for saving the dogs that were fed barely enough to survive.

The animals arrived at Kennedy International Airport late Saturday and were headed to emergency shelters in New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania on Sunday.

The farm in Goyang, a city just north of Seoul, “was more like a dungeon, where there’s very little light, little to no ventilation, so the stench of ammonia would bring tears to your eyes when you walk through,” said Kelly O’Meara, who oversees the society’s companion animal-related international projects. “You’d see eyes peering at you, but it was hard to actually see the dogs themselves in the dark.”

An estimated 17,000 other such farms still operate in South Korea, said O’Meara. However, she said, it’s a diminishing industry in a society where demand for dog meat has been plummeting. Meat from about 2 million dogs

still is eaten there each year.

In the United States, the rescued dogs will be available for adoption after the shelters evaluate their behavior and medical needs and make sure each one is ready for a new life in someone’s home.

In South Korea, O’Meara said, the dogs receive no veterinary care of any kind.

“They either get through it or they die in their cage and they receive just enough food to get by,” she said.

At the seven farms from which the Humane Society rescued more than 800 dogs since 2015, those to be slaughtered included both mixed breed dogs and purebred ones – from a Chihuahua and a Maltese to various spaniels and a Saint Bernard.

A German shorthaired pointer and a miniature pinscher came from the latest farm.

The Washington-based Humane Society International, which relies on private donations, deals directly with farmers to close down and demolish dog meat businesses and help owners financially to transition to other work.

The animals must be taken abroad, O’Meara said, because they’re generally not wanted in South Korea as pets or companion dogs. Some had been abandoned pets, and others were raised to be sold as pets but given to the meat industry if that failed.

DeKalb council to vote on funding for Route 23 resurfacing

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A big resurfacing of Sycamore Road appears likely to start this summer.

The DeKalb City Council will decide during its Monday meeting whether to contribute to a $5 million resurfacing project for a roughly 4-mile stretch of Route 23, between Illinois Route 64 in Sycamore and South Fourth Street in DeKalb. The regular council meeting will be at 6 p.m. at DeKalb’s Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St. The city was informed of the opportunity to participate in the Illinois Department of Transportation’s resurfacing plan last month, which would include a federal contribution of about $4 million and a state contribution of $1 million.

The $28,000 the city would contribute would be used for curb ramp reconstruction to make ramps more compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act and additional pedestrian signals at the Northland Plaza Shopping Center entrance.

Mayor John Rey said it certainly makes sense to leverage that kind of a city investment for such a large project.

“My hope would be for the council to see the rationale and justification for that type of leverage,” Rey said. “It would be shortsighted if they turned down a $5.2 million investment for a $28,000 city investment.”

If this amount is insufficient to cover the city’s share of the project costs, the IDOT agreement will include a provision for the city to pass additional resolutions that would authorize more funding.

City costs, such as those associated with the project are eligible for funding from the motor fuel tax and a resolution to allocate tax dollars for the project, will be brought before the council at a later date.

Proposed work on Route 23 will include the removal and replacement of 2.75 inches of asphalt. Side roads and entrances also will be milled and resurfaced as needed.

Rey said he anticipated the project would require the closure of one lane each way on one of DeKalb’s busiest roads, but said the project shouldn’t cause a significant disruption of traffic flow.

a lower point that it would be during a school year,” Rey said.

Signal upgrades would be fully paid for by the city, while the ADA ramp replacement would be paid for with 80 percent federal funds and a local 20 percent match.

“ADA speculations change periodically, which will require a municipality to upgrade their ramps,” Rey said. “Doing that in conjunction with the IDOT resurfacing makes both economic sense and further justified by the convenience of doing it not to disrupt traffic flow a second time.”

with DeKalb’s Public Works Department, said that the project is expected to go out for bid on April 28, but said it was unclear whether IDOT will postpone that date, depending on the council’s decision.

“It’s fairly typical in terms of a state project for the state to ask the county to participate in the local legs of a project

“The state tends to coordinate with local municipalities so that work is done in conjunction with the total project,” Rey said. “I’m pleased we’re able to partner with the state of Illinois to leverage the state and federal funds that are being made available.”

I feel the residents of Sycamore should vote for me as their City Clerk because I have experience working for the City of Sycamore. I have had a professional working relationship with the current City Clerk and I have a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the position. I believe that my experience working in a local government makes me the best candidate for City Clerk.

The City of Sycamore should be commended for having a full-time City Clerk position. This demonstrates the City’s commitment in supporting the work of recording and maintaining accurate records and offering easy access of information to the community.

As City Clerk I would be your first point of contact in the City of Sycamore. My superior customer service, organization and planning skills will allow me to not only meet but exceed your expectations. I am courteous, creative, resourceful and will review each request individually.

My Master’s Degree in Educational Technology will allow me to utilize my technology skills and best business practices to support our community in expanding our online capabilities.

I am dedicated to remaining on the cutting edge of technology. Technology provides the vehicle for enhanced access to information.

On paper, I seem a very unlikely candidate. I have been a teacher for over twenty years with no political experience, but when I researched the role of a city clerk, I realized the two careers were very similar. What makes me a good teacher is my ability to cooperate with and help all different types of personalities.

This is done in an environment that requires a lot of paperwork and regulation. I thoroughly enjoy both aspects of teaching. They both translate to being a good city clerk.

The clerks helps the public but does so within the guidelines set out by the city government. It’s working with people and paperwork.

If you’re doing something to the best of your ability, it’s always a full-time job. I’m continuously thinking of ways to excel and improve what I’m working on; that never stops. As so many of us do, I’ve always worked full-time while raising three amazing boys. That certainly takes organizational skills. Being fortunate to have had some great mentors, I’ve excelled into leadership roles in most positions I’ve held. From the mortgage industry, I am wellversed in following guidelines and educated on satisfying compliance issues. I have been self-employed for several years in the past. I have had many people work under me which has honed my aptitude for problem-solving. Moving into the role of City Clerk, I am eager to bring my acquired qualifications to the position and excited to serve this community I care so much about.

How can you as the city clerk make local government more open and responsive to citizens?

I would like to enhance the information technology systems within the Clerk’s office to ease accessibility of information and services for our residents and staff. By doing so, it creates a more efficient and timely process to serve our community.

The City Clerk’s office can expand opportunities for residents by: Supporting live streaming of City Council meetings Engaging youth by connecting to schools and incorporating their ideas and involvement at the city level Distributing current information to our homebound residents through community outreach Connecting residents to volunteer opportunities offered by local community organizations My goal as City Clerk is to efficiently address the needs of all residents, communicate effectively and provide transparency of our city government.

Through community and local government involvement, we can continue to make Sycamore a great place to live and work for many years to come.

The first step to opening up local government is to embrace today’s technology. Again, there needs to be a direct link on-line for questions and payments. The creation of an app that could also accomplish this would be a huge benefit. Today’s citizens deserve the best and most advanced resources a government can provide.

This is truly what I’m most excited about; working closely with the community on a daily basis. As the official recorder of the city, we can also be certain that all citizens are informed of essential information that impacts them through “Communication Sign Up” and other media outlets. It’s important to illustrate the benefits of the clerk’s office and how it supports residents. I promise to be an exceptional, forthright connection between city government and its citizens. Most importantly, the number one asset I will bring to this job, is my passion to listen and help any citizen in need of the clerk’s assistance.

I pride myself on being truthful and authentic in all areas of my life. As your city clerk, this will remain true while in office or wherever we may see each other throughout this great community.

He graduated from DeKalb High School in the class of 1968, he also attended Kishwaukee College for 2 years. Michael was the lead singer for the TCB Band in the earl ’80s, he was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in DeKalb. He loved being around and helping people, and was an avid animal lover.

Survivors include fiancée Diana Walsh of Sycamore; good friend, Karla Dorneden of Sycamore; nephew, Christopher (Rebecca) Dorneden; niece, Camille Morrison; and several cousins.

DeKalb County residents attend Barb City Brewfest Cademon Brewing Co. of Genoa was serving raspberry red ale, which proved to be popular. Owner Andrew Nordman said he received many compliments about the beer, which he brews himself.

“I brew with interesting and eccentric ingredients. Beer can taste however you want it to,” he said. “I love doing beer fests to bring my beer to the community, because a lot of people don’t know about us. I enjoy talking to people about what I’m making.”

The raspberry ale was NIU graduate student Dave Ribordy’s favorite. He said he had never heard of Cademon Brewing before the event.

Alessandro Vazquez had a feeling that a beer festival would be a big hit with DeKalb County residents.

And his intuition was spot on, as more than 500 people visited Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center on Saturday to sample more than 80 beers from local, regional and national breweries and cideries at the inaugural Barb City Brewfest.

Vazquez’s company, Brew Avenue Events, sponsored the event, which featured unique beer styles and flavors from breweries as far away as Hawaii and as close as Sycamore, Genoa and Malta.

Vazquez said attendees were enjoying the wide variety of beverages.

“People like the selection here.

There are a lot of new styles that they probably haven’t had access to before,” he said. “Craft beer sampling allows people to try beers they might not buy in a store. They can be adventurous while enjoying a fun time with friends or family.”

“A lot of people are asking about our move, and we’re excited, so we love to talk to people about it and network,” Smith said. “People love our beer, especially the Imperial Black ale, because not a lot of places carry this type of IPA, and they’re coming back for more.”

Saturday was the first time Malta’s Jonamac Apple Orchard has participated in a beer festival.

Owner Jenna Spychal was having fun pouring hard apple cider and letting people know that the orchard now makes cider, in addition to apple wine.

“This has been awesome, meeting people from the community who didn’t know that we make this,” Spychal said.

“Our barrel-aged stout hard cider has been the most popular. We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback, and this is great exposure for us.”

Sycamore resident Jana Hays said she was surprised about how much she liked the hard ciders. She and her husband, Rob, were trying many new styles of beer.

“I really like the variety here, and I’m enjoying the ciders more than I thought I would,” Hays said. “The servers here are fantastic. They’re nice, and they ask questions about what you

like and give good recommendations.

They also give a good pour.”

For NIU student Dan Brodersen, the brewfest was a good opportunity to try new beers while spending time with his father, who was visiting DeKalb from Carpentersville.

“This was my birthday gift to him because he really likes drinking beer,” Brodersen said. “It’s something we can do together, and it’s fun to hang out.

We enjoy sampling different beers.”

Rebecca Doxtater, an NIU alum and Rockford resident, said the event gave her a good excuse to come back to DeKalb.

“I loved going to school here, and I’m a fan of beer, so I was excited to come,” she said. “This is great because the vendors are so friendly. They’re helpful, and they make you feel comfortable asking questions if you don’t know about a beer. They’re knowledgeable, and they want to answer all your questions.”

Stephanie Richter of Cortland said she was excited to see an event like Barb City Brewfest in DeKalb, and she was happy to see so many local breweries.

“I’m glad to see these types of establishments in our area. It’s nice to see what they have to offer,” Richter said. “This is great because it’s so accessible. It’s the kind of event you’d see in the city or suburbs, and I’m glad there’s one here.”

SPRINGFIELD – Marijuana advocates are trying to lay the groundwork for Illinois to become the first state in the Midwest and the ninth nationwide to legalize recreational pot, arguing that the move will help solve the state’s notorious budget crisis.

Two Illinois state lawmakers introduced legislation last week that would allow residents 21 and older to possess, grow or buy up to an ounce (28 grams) of marijuana and license businesses to sell marijuana products subject to regulation. They said it would help fill Illinois’ multibillion-dollar budget hole with $350 million to $700 million in new tax revenue.

A national advocacy group, the Marijuana Policy Project, based the estimate on the proposal’s $50-per-ounce wholesale tax, Illinois’ standard sales tax, federal marijuana consumption data and recreational pot prices in Colorado. The proposal earmarks 50 percent of wholesale revenues for the state’s general fund and divides the remaining half 30/20 between education and public health.

Every state to legalize pot to date has done so by voter ballot initiative, said Chris Lindsey, a legislative analyst with the project. But Illinois advocates are not alone in holding out hope for lawmaker approval. Seventeen other states

A status hearing is scheduled for Monday.

Injured police dogs to get ambulance rides

CHAMPAIGN – Police dogs hurt on the job in the Champaign area soon will be able to get an ambulance ride to a hospital along with emergency care on the way there.

Arrow Ambulance and the University of Illinois are teaming up to provide the ambulance ride to the University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital, The News-Gazette reported.

Dr. Michael Smith, medical director of Carle Regional EMS and Arrow Ambulance, said a University of Illinois veterinarian will train Arrow Ambulance crew members in the basics of dog emergency medical response next month. The training will be offered to Arrow crews covering Champaign, Douglas and Vermilion counties, as well as parts of Piatt and Ford counties.

Ed Wojcicki, the association’s director, called legalizing recreational pot “an enforcement nightmare.” He said existing science remains inconclusive about how to best identify impairment on the road and in other compromising situations.

Lou Lang of Skokie, lead sponsor of the medical marijuana proposal, suggested the staggered timeline could help lawmakers gain a more complete picture of potential benefits and consequences – especially as more data rolls in on Illinois’ pilot medical marijuana program, which launched in late 2015.

“I do think this might be in Illinois’ future,” Lang said. “I certainly support the idea of having a discussion.”

CHICAGO – A still-active writer from Carol Stream who has written 11 self-published books and plans others is turning 110.

The Chicago Sun-Times spoke to Merle Phillips at her assisted-living facility. Her books are mostly autobiographical and sometimes evoke a bygone horse-andbuggy era.

Phillips was born April 2, 1907, in Arkansas. She studied math at Buena Vista College in Iowa and met her husband at the University of Iowa. He died in 1968.

The ex-chemistry lab worker said she began writing seriously in her 70s and sold her books door to door. Her latest is called “Beautiful Pebbles.”

Asked about advice she’d give young writers, she said: “If they want to write, just write.”

Blaming conservatives, Trump signals new openness to Dems

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump on Sunday attacked conservative lawmakers for the failure of the Republican bill to replace former President Barack Obama’s health care law, as aides signaled a greater willingness to work with moderate Democrats on upcoming legislative battles from the budget and tax cuts to health care.

On Twitter, Trump complained: “Democrats are smiling in D.C. that the Freedom Caucus, with the help of Club For Growth and Heritage, have saved Planned Parenthood & Ocare!”

The Freedom Caucus is a hard-right group of more than 30 GOP House members who were largely responsible for blocking the bill to undo the Affordable Care Act, or “Obamacare.” The bill was pulled from the House floor Friday in a humiliating political defeat for the president, having lacked support from either the conservative Republicans or Democrats.

In additional fallout from Friday’s jarring setback, Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, said he was leaving the caucus. Poe tweeted Friday that some lawmakers “would’ve voted against the 10 Commandments.”

“We must come together to find solutions to move this country forward,” Poe said Sunday in a written statement. “Saying no is easy, leading is hard but that is what we were elected to do.”

Trump initially focused his blame on Democrats for the failure and predicted a dire future for the current law.

But on Sunday, his aides made clear that Trump would be seeking support from moderate Democrats, leaving open the possibility he could still revisit health care legislation. White House chief of staff Reince Priebus scolded conservative Republicans, explaining that Trump had felt “disappointed” that a “number of peo-

ple he thought were loyal to him that weren’t.”

“It’s time for the party to start governing,” Priebus said. “I think it’s time for our folks to come together, and I also think it’s time to potentially get a few moderate Democrats on board as well.”

As he ponders his next steps, Trump faces decisions on whether to back administrative changes to fix Obamacare or undermine it as prices for insurance plans rise in many markets. Over the weekend, the president tweeted a promise of achieving a “great healthcare plan” because Obamacare will “explode.”

On Sunday, Priebus did not answer directly regarding Trump’s choice, saying that fixes to the health law will have to come legislatively and he wants to ensure “people don’t get left behind.”

“I don’t think the president is closing the door on anything,” he said.

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said Democrats stood ready to work with Trump to fix Obamacare if he is willing to drop attempts to repeal the law and not undermine it. He warned that Trump is destined to “lose again” on other parts of his agenda if he remains beholden to conservative Republicans.

“If he changes, he could have a different presidency,” Schumer said. “But he’s going to have to tell the Freedom Caucus and the hard-right special wealthy interests who are dominating his presidency ... he can’t work with them, and we’ll certainly look at his proposals.”

Their comments came after another day of finger-pointing among Republicans, both subtle and not-so subtle. On Saturday, Trump urged Americans in a tweet to watch Judge Jeanine Pirro’s program on Fox that night.

She led her show by calling for House Speaker Paul Ryan to resign, blaming him for defeat of the bill in the Republican-controlled chamber.

We should give North Korea the Iran treatment

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is being faulted for undiplomatic speaking during his tour of Asia over the weekend.

Among other things, he parroted official Chinese rhetoric about “mutual respect” and “win-win solutions,” which Beijing hailed as deferral to its uncompromising positions on matters such as Taiwan. Perhaps Tillerson was suffering from a lack of seasoned staff.

Or perhaps he was offering “face” to Chinese President Xi Jinping to compensate for vigorous private arm-twisting on the principal subject of the tour, North Korea.

We are cautiously willing to bet on the latter.

Though many of its early foreign policy actions have been inept or incoherent, the Trump administration appears to have properly focused on what may be the biggest single threat it inherited: the manic pursuit by the regime of Kim Jong Un of nuclear warheads and the capacity to launch them at the continental United States.

Since President Donald Trump took office, Pyongyang has conducted two tests of missiles and another of a rocket engine that might be used on an intercontinental ballistic missile. It is rapidly stockpiling nuclear warheads. And the 30-something Kim has demonstrated his capacity for reckless aggression by, among other things, reportedly orchestrating the murder of his half brother at an international airport in Malaysia.

The Obama administration’s strategy toward North Korea – “strategic patience” – amounted to ignoring the gathering threat.

But the outgoing president appears to have warned his successor about the problem in their first post-election meeting – and Trump seems to have listened. During his trip to Japan, South Korea and China, Tillerson bluntly declared that “the policy of strategic patience has ended” and that “we are exploring a new range of diplomatic, security and economic measures” – including possible military action.

No doubt the administration is discovering what deterred President Barack Obama: U.S. options range from the very bad to the truly terrible. A military strike on North Korea’s nuclear or missile facilities might not succeed while triggering a potentially catastrophic war – though, as Tillerson hinted, further steps by North Korea toward deploying nuclear-armed ICBMs might compel such action.

Tougher sanctions might impose terrible hardship on North Korea’s people without altering the course of a regime that has allowed millions to starve to death. Renewing negotiations with Pyongyang risks repeating the futile exercises of the past two decades, when North Korea pocketed U.S. aid and political concessions while violating its promises to freeze nuclear work.

Judging from Tillerson’s public comments, the new administration is starting with the most sensible opening steps – a strong effort to enlist China, as well as other nations, in a new campaign of pressure. He said, “I don’t believe we have ever fully achieved the maximum level of action that can be taken” under existing U.N. Security Council resolutions – and he’s right.

Chinese banks continue to help North Korea trade in U.S. dollars, as do the regime’s own shell companies. Chinese companies continue to supply North Korea with not only food and energy, but also materials Pyongyang can use to build bombs.

What has not been tried on North Korea is the full-court economic press that was applied to Iran. In this case, it may not succeed in inducing the regime to check its nuclear ambitions.

But it is the right place to start.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Help commemorate legacy of Jacob Haish

To the Editor: Barbed wire baron Jacob Haish’s inventions helped cultivate the Midwest and America during a time of innovation. His monetary donations helped establish DeKalb, from the hospital and the library to Northern Illinois University.

Even with all of Haish’s contributions to his community, you’d be hard pressed to find substantial, tangible proof and recognition of Haish’s impact.

It’s easy to visit the Ellwood House or Glidden Homestead and get your fill of their history and impact. But over the years, because of Haish’s limited visibility in the area and lack of a real landmark, Haish has always felt like the forgotten hero of the barbed wire legacy.

Fortunately, a local group is working to change that.

The DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association, or DAAHA, is raising funds to place a historical marker outside of the DeKalb Public Library, or Haish Memorial Library, on Oak Street. Haish’s will left $150,000 to the city for the construction of the library, which was completed in 1930.

The marker will detail Haish’s life and honor his many contributions to DeKalb, and will look similar to many of the DAAHA markers that exist in DeKalb County.

With library approval and a proposed text already written with help from Haish family descendant Jeff Marshall, just one more crucial element is needed: the funds to pay for the marker.

The total cost of the marker is estimated at $4,200. Just $1,450 has been raised as of early March.

I urge the community to donate to this historical marker so that future generations of DeKalb County have a place to remember what Haish accomplished.

He brought so much to this area, and his successful barbed wire business meant major donations to places such as NIU and the hospital, two longtime key players of our communiversity.

How many jobs have been created, and how many lives have been improved through these institutions?

It’s time to memorialize our appreciation for Haish’s contributions, and give a thank you that is long overdue.

Tax-deductible donations may be made to DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association (DAAHA), and mailed to 111 S. Second St., DeKalb, IL 60115.

Donations should be labeled “Haish marker.”

Misty is right for DeKalb

To the Editor: Misty Haji-Sheikh is right!

We’re lucky to have four candidates running for mayor who genuinely care about our city.

We’re lucky to have candidates who have ideas to cope with DeKalb’s problems, which are complex and interrelated.

But Misty was the first candidate with a plan to bring jobs here. Misty recognized early on in the race that our geography can help us attract new businesses, and that our long-term water table position is our solution to our jobs problem.

All of our candidates have experienced success in their business ventures.

Misty is the only candidate with County Board experience, which directly translates to the skills one needs to govern our city. Misty has the right qualifications.

Misty has the energy and drive to get things done. The mayor’s job is a part-time position, and Misty is the only candidate promising to work fulltime for the city.

Misty is right that the job will require the investment of more time.

I have no doubt that DeKalb has a bright future ahead. But Misty is the right choice to lead us.

Vote ‘yes’ for county public health programs

To the Editor: Please take the time on April 4 to vote “yes” for the referendum supporting the DeKalb County Health Department, which has endured a damaging loss of revenue, staff and valuable preventative health programs due to higher government funding cuts.

It is easy to take for granted the public health department’s contribution to the health status of our community.

I, as a physician, take pride in doing my part for the well-being or the lack of disease in my patients. But it is actually public health policy enacted through food safety, clean water, sewers, immunizations, pregnancy and well-child clinics and healthy lifestyles that have been responsible for adding 25 years to life expectancy in the 20th century.

Yes, that is public health, as well as tracing and controlling epidemics, automobile safety and seat belts, anti-smoking campaigns, vital statistics and records, disaster response and more.

The general health of everyone in our community is dependent on the DeKalb County Health Department, and it cannot function properly without increased revenue to maintain its programs. Before acknowledging supporting data, we were surprised to discover how little is being asked of us individually: $9.57 a year for the owner of a $100,000 home and 11.5 cents an acre for farmers.

The department takes only 48 cents out of every $100 of local taxes, but this funds hardly 25 percent of the department’s budget. It has a history of excellent and adept management, but after years of declining state and federal grant revenue, the staff has decreased by almost a quarter and there has been appreciable reductions in programs such as those dedicated to the prevention of infant deaths, HIV,

sexually transmitted diseases, diabetes or heart attacks.

Because public health programs focus on health promotion and preventative medicine, they unequivocally reflect the most efficient use of health care dollars. In this time of skyrocketing medical care costs, we all need an effective and sufficient public health department to help us keep away from the doctor.

Remember: on April 4, vote “yes” for public health.

Candy Smith cares about Sycamore’s future

To the Editor: I am writing this letter in support of Candy Smith for mayor of Sycamore.

Candy is not only my hilarious and wonderful aunt; she is also a lifelong Sycamore resident who has served the city over the past 18 years in a variety of roles ranging from alderman to city clerk and who actively volunteers for many local organizations and events that support the community.

Candy is knowledgeable regarding the issues that matter to all of us. Whether you are raising a family, running a household or a business, trying to retire with dignity, or you simply want life in Sycamore to continue offering more, Candy has the experience and the savvy to get things done, but most importantly, she actually cares.

While I no longer live in Sycamore, I look back at my childhood as an exemplar of what small-town life should be like, and I seek to replicate those values and opportunities for my own children.

I am confident in saying that a vote for Candy Smith is a vote for competence, compassion and character all things that are vital to the continued sustainability of Sycamore’s charm.

It goes without saying that local elections are more important than ever!

Northern Illinois University’s Chemistry Club invites the public to its annual Spring Chemistry Demo Night at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Cole Hall room 100.

This year, the Chemistry Club will put on Chem Wars, a show that will feature a number of experiments that could have been used by the big film studios in Hollywood to create the special effects in the science fiction franchises we all love and cherish.

“We certainly hope that the Star Wars theme draws lots of people to come to the show,” Chemistry Club President Marina Galluzzo said in a news release.

“However, I am confident that when they leave they will not only better understand the chemical concepts behind these experiments but also appreciate the love of chemistry that all volunteers participating in the show share.”

The DeKalb High School a cappella group Enharmonic Fusion will host an Italian dinner fundraiser for the group’s trip to New York City in April to compete in the Varsity Vocals High School A Cappella Nationals.

The dinner will take place at 5:30 p.m. April 7, in the DHS Cafeteria before the District 428 Music Faculty Showcase. DeKALB – Entering the 2016 season No. 4 on the depth chart, Northern Illinois quarterback Daniel Santacaterina didn’t expect to see much playing time.

By the end of the year, he was making his first start for the Huskies on the road.

Now the redshirt sophomore enters the 2017 spring season in a competition with redshirt junior Ryan Graham for the starting spot as the team finished its fourth practice on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Huskie Stadium.

“It definitely feels different (this spring),” Santacaterina said. “I feel more responsibility, and I feel when you have more responsibility, you’re held to a higher standard and it makes you raise your game. Ryan is a great friend of mine, and it’s really fun to compete with him. ... I’m getting a lot more reps, so I’ve been learning the offense by performing the offense – being in there and executing it, that’s how you learn best.”

For the second consecutive season, the Huskies suffered the injuries at quarterback in 2016. Drew Hare and Anthony Maddie both suffered season-ending injuries, and Graham had a concussion in the first half of the Huskies’ game at Eastern Michigan. Santacaterina, the 6-foot-1, 206-pounder from Geneva, played the rest of the 31-24 overtime comeback win over the Eagles and got his first collegiate start at Kent State – a 31-21 victory for the Huskies.

Against the Flashes, he went 13 for 23 with 258 yards and an interception and also ran for a 3-yard touchdown.

Against Eastern Michigan, he was 5 for 15 with 105 yards and a 74-yard touchdown pass to Aregeros Turner and rushed for 91 yards, but also had the luxury of running back Jordan Huff rushing for 173 yards and three touchdowns.

“When you come into the season where I did, just being prepared with as reps as you can, then you slowly realize it could become a possibility,” Santacaterina said about starting at No. 4 on the depth chart.

Being thrust into the starting spot as a freshman because of injuries is something that Graham is also familiar with. In 2015, injuries to Hare and Maddie meant that Graham started four games as a redshirt freshman – with wins over Buffalo and Western Michigan and losses to Ohio and Boi-

In the game against Toledo – in which Hare suffered his season-ending Achilles injury – Graham helped lead a comeback, going 9 for 12 with 132 yards and a touchdown off the bench in a 32-27 road win.

Graham, a 6-foot-1, 210-pounder from Wheaton, once again took over as the starter when Hare went down in the second game of the 2016 season, but lost his spot to Maddie after a lackluster performance in a loss to Western Illinois. When Maddie got injured late against Bowling Green, Graham started against Toledo and Eastern Michigan. “(The last two seasons) were definitely up and down, but I think I gained a lot of experience,” Graham said. “Learning from Drew and Maddie was definitely a big help for me. ... I’m working on being more consistent, pocket presence and good feet and leading – leading the team the best I can.”

In the game against the Rockets in 2016, Graham went 24 for 43 with 227 yards, three touchdowns and an

interception in a 31-24 loss at Guaranteed Rate Field. “(Graham and Santacaterina) were both recruited here because they can do and execute our system, and you’ve seen them both do that at different times through the past two years,” NIU coach Rod Carey said.

“They both run well, and they both throw well, it’s just a matter of reps and time and getting experience.”

There was a glimmer of hope for Maddie and the Huskies – he was originally listed on the spring roster – but they found out Thursday that his waiver for a potential sixth year was declined by the NCAA. “They offered an explanation back to the waiver, and the waiver is 70 pages long,” Carey said. “(It) came down to a bunch of legal jargon and what they thought.”

NIU quarterbacks coach Craig Harmon said he wants Graham and Santacaterina to take better command of the offense this spring and said they both did well in the games they played in the past.

been splitting duties with the firststring offense so far this spring, Carey said.

Redshirt freshman Marcus Childers was getting most of the third-string reps during team drills Saturday.

True freshman Rodney Hall, who graduated early to participate in the spring season, is a highly touted quarterback out of Cass Tech in Detroit. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Hall participated in individual drills and briefly in 7-on-7 but didn’t get any reps during team drills Saturday.

Carey said he’s still unsure whether Hall will redshirt this coming season.

During the 2014 season, Hare, Maddie and Matt McIntosh were competing for the starting spot – with them splitting duties early in the season before Hare won the job and helped lead the Huskies to a victory over Bowling Green in the MAC Championship.

“You’d always love to have one guy,” Carey said. “Every team would, but we’ll see when we get there.”

Burns scores in 2nd Sycamore completes half of Spartans’ win schedule in March again

ecarifio@shwmedia.com SYCAMORE – In a pair of games in last week’s season-opening tournament at Glenbard South, Sycamore girls soccer coach Dave Lichamer saw his team pushing and pushing to score goals.

After a 9-0 win against Glenbard South, the Spartans (3-0) beat West Chicago, 1-0. They played less than a half against Lemont in the title game Thursday before lightning delays canceled the game – it was scoreless when it was called.

On Saturday against Belvidere, he said his Spartans didn’t press after being held scoreless in the first half, kept taking their shots, and eventually found the back of the net in a 2-0 win against Belvidere in the home opener.

“We started to push hard, started to overdo it a little bit instead of being patent and letting the passing work,” Lichamer said. “Don’t force stuff, don’t take on everyone. It will happen.”

It took almost 53 minutes to score against the Indians (0-1) on Saturday.

Savannah Burns knocked in a rebound from the left side with 26:17 left in the game.

“I was just in the right spot,” Burns said. “I saw a girl closing in, so I hit with my left foot. First time.”

Lichamer said it was nice to see his

sophomore connect after some misses earlier.

“In the first half she had a couple almost in the same spot, but her weight was a little too far back,” Lichamer said.

“She couldn’t quite get enough on it. But that one, it was a great left-foot volley and placed it in the net and got us out of that tie.”

Jessica Morreale added an insurance goal with 3:26 left, sending in a rocket from right in front of the goal.

“We handled the ball well, our passing was real nice,” Lichamer said. “We used the size of the field to our advantage. I was real happy with our ball movement, which was a but of a struggled during the week. That was our focus today. Goals will come and they did.”

By the numbers: The Spartans finished with a 12-2 edge in shots.

Beyond the stats: Emma Stice had a chance for a goal about 90 seconds before Burns’ shot, but her header clanked off the crossbar.

They said it: “I think we did pretty good,” Burns said. “We were moving the ball pretty well, better than we had been in recent games. I think we’re communicating more as a team.”

Up next: The Spartans head to Dixon on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. game. The Indians face Freeport at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Spartans will meet Chicago Robeson in Week 3

ecarifio@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – For the second year in a row, the calendar turned to March – almost to April, really – and the Sycamore football team still had a hole in its schedule for the upcoming season.

Once again, a late arrangement has filled out the Spartans schedule.

Athletic director Chauncey Carrick announced Saturday that the Spartans will play Week 3 against Chicago Robeson at Gately Stadium, which would be September 9.

“Not many are in a situation like us where they’re looking for Weeks 1, 2 and 3,” Carrick said.

Robeson was 2-7 last year and last made the playoffs in 2013, in Class 3A In 2010, they made a run to the 6A quarterfinals under current coach Fabray Collins, who has guided them to the playoffs 10 times since 2002.

Last year, the Spartans filled their Week 3 vacancy with Gary (Indiana) Roosevelt and won, 63-6. They were up, 35-0, after the first quarter at Engh Field.

“There was a chance we could have played a second year,” Carrick said.

“They let us know right around Dec. 1, right after the season got over, that they got a game in Indiana. That put us back on the hunt for a game.”

“ It gets to be a little stressful, especially when our league could go to playing everybody, or add additional crossovers, but choose not to.”

Sycamore athletic director Carrick said the search is complicated by the logistics of the surrounding conferences. Most have eight or 10 teams. The 10-team conferences play once through to get their nine games, while the 8-team conferences start their league play in Week 3.

The Northern Illinois Big 12 has 10 teams, but split into five-team divisions with just two crossover games.

“I’m not going to lie, it is stressful,” Carrick said. “Coach (Joe) Ryan worries about it, I worry about it. We were calling teams in Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, we even looked at Minnesota and Missouri. It gets to be a little stressful, especially when our league could go to playing everybody, or add additional crossovers, but choose not to.”

Bulls run away in 2nd half; Butler has career-high 14 assists

The Jekyll and Hyde season was on full display again Sunday, as the Bulls dominated the red-hot Bucks, 109-94.

It followed a home loss to the 76ers on Friday, after which coach Fred Hoiberg challenged his team to start taking embarrassing losses personally.

That they did. Jimmy Butler had a career-high 14 assists, and Nikola Mirotic’s continued his march to redemption with 28 points, tying a season high he set Wednesday.

More importantly, they remained in striking distance of the postseason.

They’re 35-39, one game out of the eighth playoff spot with eight games left.

Forget having the pulse of this team from game-to-game.

“When I watch the film, a lot of times when we get slapped in the face, when we get punched in the mouth, when the adversity hits us, we don’t handle it well,” Hoiberg said, trying to give his best explanation for the inconsistency.

“We talk about it every game. It’s going to happen at some point. You’re going to have to handle adversity, you’re going to have to get through it and it will determine the outcome of the game.

“We did that [against the Bucks].

They got off to the good start, I didn’t see any head-hanging and we took a one-point lead into the locker room.

It’s handling adversity. That’s the big-

gest thing we have to do these last eight games if we want to have a chance.”

But there are other flaws that need covering up, such as the defensive focus, sticking to the gameplan and rebounding.

The glaring problem lately, however, is a second unit that isn’t pulling its weight.

The bench was so bad early against the Bucks that Hoiberg had to cut the group’s minutes short in the second quarter and go back to most of the starters.

That meant heavy minutes for Butler (39), Mirotic (35) and Rajon Rondo (34).

With three days off before hosting the Cavaliers on Thursday, Hoiberg could get away with it. But he won’t

have that luxury the next few weeks.

Hoiberg also needs Mirotic to keep going.

From the outhouse to the penthouse in the rotation this month, Mirotic shot 11 for 14, including 6 for 9 from 3-point range. He knows he must keep that up.

“I’ve been playing with a lot of confidence,” Mirotic said. “I’ve spent a lot of time shooting there, before practice, after practice. I know you guys have been asking me about consistency, so I’m working on that. Try to be more consistent, especially now, a very important moment [in the season].”

No one has appreciated Mirotic’s comeback more than Butler, who, even when Mirotic was inactive two weeks ago, let him know the team would need him for a serious playoff push.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The North Carolina Tar Heels now are a win away from getting back to a national championship game they narrowly lost a year ago.

And this time, they made the last shot.

Luke Maye hit a jumper with 0.3 seconds left and top-seeded North Carolina held off Kentucky, 75-73, to earn the Tar Heels’ second straight trip to the Final Four and 20th all-time in Sunday’s showdown of college basketball’s elite in the South Regional.

The Tar Heels (31-7) will play Midwest champ Oregon on Saturday in Glendale, Arizona, in the national semifinal.

North Carolina took control with 12 straight points over the final 5 minutes, a run similar to what it used a week ago to beat Arkansas. The Tar Heels finished this game with a 16-9 run. The Wildcats had one last chance, but Derek Willis’ inbounds pass went out of bounds on the far end.

Kentucky (32-6) will miss out on the Final Four for the second straight year. Willis and sophomore Isaac Humphries left the court with towels over their heads, and Fox was the last to leave.

The Wildcats had hoped their talented freshmen would carry them.

Bam Adebayo and Fox each had 13 points, and Monk, the Southeastern Conference player of the year, finished with 12.

Never before had the NCAA tournament pitted powerhouse programs that have so dominated March. This South final featured Kentucky with the most tournament wins all-time with 124 and North Carolina just behind with 120.

But this was just the fourth time these blue bloods have met in a regional final. The result was much the same as the others with North Carolina now 3-1 against Kentucky as the Tar Heels avenged a 103-100 loss Dec. 17 in Las Vegas.

Kentucky led for only 3:57 in a game North Carolina had a big edge on the boards (44-34) and inside where the Tar Heels outscored the Wildcats, 34-26.

NEW YORK – South Carolina added a missing piece to its rich basketball history.

The school of Frank McGuire, Kevin Joyce, Brian Winters, Mike Dunleavy and Alex English is going to the Final Four for the first time.

Add the names Sindarius Thornwell and Frank Martin to the top of the list.

Thornwell’s 26 points and the Gamecocks’ swarming zone defense meant a 77-70 victory over Florida on Sunday and a berth in the Final Four.

Martin, he of the booming voice and terrifying faces, led the seventh-seeded Gamecocks to the biggest victory in school history and now they will face Gonzaga, the No. 1 seed from the West Regional, in the Final Four on Saturday at Glendale, Arizona.

Bears’ Hall, Packers’ Dorleant arrested in Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Authorities in central Iowa say Bears cornerback Deiondre Hall and Green Bay Packers cornerback Makinton Dorleant were arrested outside a bar in Cedar Falls.

Hall was cited for disorderly conduct, public intoxication and interference with official acts. Dorleant was cited for interference.

Police say officers responded to a report of a fight outside the bar Sharkey’s Funhouse on Saturday night.

According to a police affidavit, Hall did not respond to police instructions and spit in the officers’ faces. Police say an officer used a Taser on Hall’s legs in order to get him into the squad car.

Dorleant was detained after authorities say he approached officers “in a threatening manner” following Hall’s arrest.

Johnson wins Match Play to sweep World Golf Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – Dustin Johnson won the

Dell Technologies Match Play to cap off an otherwise dominant week that made him the first player to sweep the four World Golf Championships.

Johnson never trailed in any of his seven matches over 112 holes, ending with a 1-up victory over Jon Rahm for his third straight win that left no doubt who was No. 1 in the world.

Larson hangs on to win at Fontana

FONTANA, Calif. – Kyle Larson persevered through four late restarts to win at Fontana on Sunday, adding his second career victory to his overall Monster Energy NASCAR Cup series points lead.

Larson finished second in each of the last three races, but the Sacramento-area native’s Chip Ganassi Racing Chevrolet was the class of the field at Auto Club Speedway for the second straight day. He also won the Xfinity Series race on Saturday, completing a clean sweep of the weekend.

Faced with the late drama and jockeying typical to the five-wide asphalt on Fontana’s bumpy 2-mile track, Larson was persistent and tenacious. After surging up from fourth to first with four new tires before the final caution, he made one last outstanding restart and cruised through two overtime laps to win.

Brad Keselowski was second and Clint Bowyer came in third.

Almora finished 3 for 4 with two homers and five RBIs. Cubs prospect Victor Caratini was 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Eddie Butler went 42/3 innings, yielding two runs and seven hits.

If you’re a Cubs fan, you can’t get enough of World Series replays and documentaries about last year’s title.

One more is coming, and you need to make room for it.

On Monday at 9:30 p.m., Comcast SportsNet Chicago will premiere an original documentary, “Reign Men: The Story behind Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.”

The documentary, narrated by Brett Eldredge, was produced, written and edited by CSN’s Sarah Lauch and Ryan McGuffey.

Unlike previous programs, “Reign Men” focuses solely on Game 7, when the Cubs blew a lead and then rallied to beat the Cleveland Indians in 10 innings. The title plays off the 17-minute rain delay before the 10th inning, when right fielder Jason Heyward gathered his Cubs teammates in the weight room and gave them a pep talk.

What sets this documentary apart from the others is how it came about. It has a nice element of spontaneity to it.

“I was at Game 7,” said McGuffey, senior producer of original content for CSN. “I came back the next day from Cleveland. I just went up to Sarah and was like, ‘I don’t know where or when or what, but there’s something there.

At some point, we have to revisit that game.’

“I just told her, ‘It was different at that game. It was just a different feel. I told my boss, Kevin Cross, ‘I think we should do something.’ He said, ‘I don’t know if we’ll have enough time. What do you think the timeline is?’ I’m like, ‘I think it should be out right before Opening Day.’ He was like, ‘How are we going to get these people?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know, but just tell me I can try. Upper Octave is a brass band made up of seven DeKalb High School band students- Noah Brooks, Rathke Devonte Chris Allen, Maddi Hoth, Joseph Rathke, Merrick, Colton Kammes, and Dylan Propheter.

The group was founded last year when preparing for their school’s talent show, but before that they have played together in many other ensembles.

Upper Octave’s main goal is to bring instrumental music to their whole school and to engage their non-musical listeners by playing pop tunes. Upper Octave would like to thank the band Lucky Chops for being their main inspiration and would like to thank the people at Kiwanis for providing them with this opportunity to perform! swelling, opening your Eustachian tubes and thus improving your hearing.

Note that one study, however, did not show significant change in Eustachian tube dysfunction with the use of a common steroid delivered via nasal spray, Nasacort.

In addition, an over-the-counter expectorant, guaifenesin, could thin secretions sufficiently in the Eustachian tube to help clear it.

Essentially, the treatment depends on the cause. For inflammation and closure of the Eustachian tube caused by infection, antibiotics can help. For inflammation caused by acid reflux, which can lead to inflammation in the nasopharynx, look for ways to decrease acid reflux. If adenoids are blocking the Eustachian tube, the adenoids can be surgically removed.

As for medications, if those are ineffective, either balloon dilation of the Eustachian tube or laser therapy can be used to clear the opening in the nasopharynx. Talk to your doctor about your symptoms. Eustachian tube dysfunction can be treated and, because symptoms can worsen, it should not be ignored.

Also, a note to my readers: A recent column on the potential link between proton pump inhibitors and heart disease referred to a study involving both clopidogrel and Plavix. In fact, they’re the same drug. The reference should have said that researchers found an increase in the rate of heart events among those taking a proton pump inhibitor and clopidogrel/Plavix after angioplasty, but no difference in death rates. Thanks to those readers who pointed this out.

Dear Doctor: My hearing loss is related to my Eustachian tubes: They stay closed. I can open them and improve my hearing by holding my nose and blowing, but the effect lasts only a short time. Hearing aids don’t help. What can I do?

Dear Reader: First, let’s consider the size and location of the Eustachian tubes, one on each side of your head. Only half a centimeter wide, each one starts behind the nose and travels through cartilage and bone toward the middle ear, an air-filled chamber bordered on one side by the eardrum. The pressure within the middle ear should be equal to the air pressure outside, and the Eustachian tube is the only way for the body to equalize these pressures. This gas pressure homeostasis is necessary for optimal hearing.

The most common reason that the Eustachian tube closes is from inflammation within the tube and secretions that can block it from opening. With the tube closed, the middle ear has no way for the air to go in or out. When that happens, the air in the middle ear gets absorbed by the surrounding structures, creating a negative pressure in the middle ear.

The sensation is similar to how your ears feel at the bottom of a pool. This negative pressure makes it even more difficult for the Eustachian tube to open, increasing to the point where fluid starts to fill the middle ear. In severe cases, blockage of the Eustachian tube can lead to vertigo and balance problems.

Now let’s look at the possible causes for a closed Eustachian tube. In my experience, the most common cause is chronic nasal congestion, either from allergies or environmental irritants. Infection of the adenoids, sinus or nose also are likely causes; to determine this, an ear, nose and throat doctor would visualize the adenoids to assess their condition.

Chronic nasal swelling is another potential culprit. If that’s the case, medications such as nasal steroids, leukotriene inhibitors and antihistamines could decrease the

Bridge players make lots of mistakes. Bridge writers ought to make far fewer, if only because there is software to help with deal analysis.

When I read about today’s deal, the author said that if declarer in four spades played to ruff hearts in the dummy after the trump lead, he would fail. Is that true?

South was right to open one spade despite having only 11 highcard points. He had the majors, two aces and an easy rebid. He also had a seven-loser hand (two spades, two hearts, one diamond and two clubs) should partner have a fit for one of the majors. North described a gameforce with three-card spade support.

(In two-over-one game-forcing, North would have rebid two spades, and South would have jumped to game with his minimum opening.)

First, South checked his losers. He had none in spades, three in hearts, one in diamonds and one in clubs -- two too many. But then he wisely counted winners if he did ruff two hearts on the board. He saw five spades, one heart, two clubs and those two ruffs -- 10 in all.

Declarer won the first trick with dummy’s spade king, played the heart queen to the king and ace, ruffed a heart low, played a club to his ace and ruffed another heart.

Then he could have either led the club queen to establish his second trick in the suit or exited with a diamond to open up a channel to his hand with a diamond ruff so that he could draw trumps.
