I am not Mother Nature

Instinctively, most mothers want to help the little ones.

I consider myself very motherly and an animal lover. Finding out the hard way that I am not even close to being Mother Nature was a sad feat.

Living in DeKalb County, we are no strangers to wildlife. With so much of our county being farmland, animals have a lot of room to roam.

We see majestic deer regularly, sneaky coyotes, red foxes and smell the fresh manure in the morning.

We must not forget the crazy critters such as the little mice, chipmunks and other rodents. They are a nuisance when it comes to sidewalks, driveways and dogs barking at them. Besides that, they really don’t cause much trouble.

This is why I had no qualms about helping out a little beaver in his time of need.

You see, recently I stopped at the Interstate 88 oasis for gas. Afterward, I was on the ramp heading west, when I saw a decent-sized beaver waddling toward the wall of the ramp.

I couldn’t believe my eyes. If Hannah Jo was in the car she would have been awestruck.

Anyway, I looked behind me and didn’t see any cars, so I thought “I have to stop.

This little guy is going to get run over if I don’t do something.”

I needed to guide him back to the ravine.

But how was I to do that?

I checked in the back of my car and found a clipboard I use at school. So I proceed to walk toward the beaver and shoo him back to the grass.

I must have frightened him with the clipboard, because he charged at me and almost got stuck under my dress.

Needless to say, I totally flipped out. I was dazed and confused.

Checking to see if I had any scratches or bite marks, I ran back to my car. As I was, I saw a truck driver who had seen the whole thing. He was laughing his butt off while giving me a thumbs-up.

As I was looking out the windshield and putting my car in gear, the little bugger took off into the grass.

This was not what I intended to happen. I thought for sure it would have been a friendly encounter.

So my motherly instinct apparently doesn’t work on wildlife.

Local Lore lecture honors wives of ‘Barbed Wire Barons’

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Although Isaac Ellwood, Joseph Glidden and Jacob Haish are recognized names in the community for their contributions to creating and manufacturing barbed wire, a lecture Friday at the Ellwood House Museum featured the women supporting these local figures.

The museum’s second annual Local Lore lecture series opened with presentations on Harriet Ellwood, Lucinda Glidden and Sophia Haish in keeping with March being Women’s History Month.

Jessi Haish LaRue, a descendant of Jacob Haish, talked about the “Barbed Wire Baron’s” wife, Sophia, during the event and said it was important that she wasn’t simply recognized as the wife of an inventor.

Although Jacob Haish did develop his own design for barbed wire, Sophia was herself an inventor and had her own patent for improvements to the safety pin.

“To have the idea and the money to be listed as an inventor is really incredible, and I like to think that Sophia has the entrepreneurial mind, just like her husband,” LaRue said.

Because they didn’t have children, the Haishes’ fortune went to the community, most notably into the construction of the Haish Memorial Library in downtown DeKalb.

They also contributed to, in addition to Isaac Ellwood and Joseph Glidden, making DeKalb the home of Northern Illinois State Normal School, which would later become Northern Illinois University.

Tricia Runzel, curator of education and interpretation at the museum, discussed Harriet Ellwood, who, unlike the other women, was a DeKalb County native.

Runzel said that in her research, it might have been Harriet who ultimately conceded that her husband’s design for barbed wire was inferior to Glidden’s, leading to the two men’s partnership.

“Supposedly, people should thank Harriet for that,” Runzel said.

Runzel added that Harriet also was known as the “unknown giver,” as many anonymous donations to local charities supposedly were given by her.

Glover said that although she didn’t have a direct role in the development of her husband’s barbed wire design, Glidden’s hairpins often were used by her husband in modeling his design.

Using the profits from the manufacturing of barbed wire, the Gliddens built the Glidden House Hotel in downtown DeKalb, where they eventually moved.

After the lecture, the museum displayed various items related to the three women, including china hand-painted by Harriet Ellwood, a tablecloth belonging to Lucinda Glidden and a cane with Sophia Haish’s name on it and her wedding band inscribed at the bottom.

Local Lore lectures will continue once a month through November and

feature a different presentation related to DeKalb County’s history. A

Ambulance fee increases proposed

SYCAMORE – The costs to ride in Sycamore’s ambulances could increase starting in May under a proposal city officials are considering.

The largest percentage increase would be for residents receiving Basic Life Support service, who would see costs rise 41.8 percent from $423 to $600. Ambulance fees were last adjusted in April 2014.

Sycamore Fire Chief Pete Polarek gave an overview of the proposed fee increases Monday to the City Council and said Sycamore’s prices are cheaper than the average community’s.

He said the adjustments would bring Sycamore’s prices in line with the average of surrounding communities that were surveyed.

“Quite frankly, we’re still below potential revenue that we could receive, but we’re trying to be conservative here and stay in the middle of the road,” Polarek said. “We’re not looking to gouge the customer, but I think we’re also looking to supplement the income to provide the service.”

Under the proposal, the cost for a resident to receive Basic Life Support service would increase from $423 to $600. The cost would rise from $575 to $775 for nonresidents. Medicare and insurance companies generally cover the cost of ambulance rides.

Advanced Life Support is a set of

life-saving procedures that extend Basic Life Support to further support circulation and provide adequate breathing.

The different levels of Advanced Life Support services have different costs based on the extent of the treatment that is needed.

The cost for a resident to receive Advanced Life Support 1 service would increase from $550 to $775, while nonresidents would see an increase from $850 to $950.

The cost for a resident to receive Advanced Life Support 2 service would increase from $750 to $900, while the price for nonresidents would rise from $1,000 to $1,100.

Patients also have to pay a fee per mile that they are riding in the ambulance. For residents, that would rise from $10 to $12 a mile, and nonresidents would see an increase from $10 to $13 a mile.

Polarek said property taxes also support ambulance services, which is why residents pay a reduced rate.

However, ambulance fees also help to offset the city’s costs in providing the service, such as equipment, labor and medical supplies.

“The philosophy many years ago when the ambulance service was started here was that the fees help to supplement,” Polarek said.

The proposed adjustments would have to gain approval at a future council meeting to go into effect. If approved, the new fees would begin May 1.

D-428 invites community to help in superintendent search

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In the search for a new DeKalb School District 428 superintendent, the board is seeking questions from the community they would want asked to potential candidates.

District 428 recently hired the Illinois Association of School Boards to aid in the search for a superintendent to replace Doug Moeller, who will resign April 30.

Moeller was put on paid administrative leave in September after accusations of sexual harassment and was replaced by interim Superintendent Brad Hawk, who is serving a maximum of 100 days.

The job was posted on the IASB website last month, along with a brochure highlighting the district, and will close to applicants Monday.

According to the brochure posted on the IASB website, candidates will be

evaluated on their professional merits and successful experience that demonstrates a good match for the district.

From the applicants who applied, six to eight candidates will be vetted and brought to the district to meet with district staff and community members.

The board will then interview three final candidates.

The total compensation the candidate receives will be regionally competitive based on experience and education.

The target employment date for the selected candidate is July 1.

All submitted questions will be forwarded to teams of stakeholders that will be meeting with each superintendent candidate during the hiring process.

Thomas O. Coyle, 88, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at DeKalb County Rehab and Nursing Center.

Born March 20, 1929, in Rector, Arkansas, the son of Thomas and Thelma (Flowers) Coyle, Thomas married Maxine L. Green on May 28, 1971 in Carpentersville, Illinois.

Thomas was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps serving during World War II. He was employed by Caterpillar for 34 years, and was a member of the Machinist Union.

Thomas was a member of the Church of Christ in Sycamore.

He is survived by his wife, Maxine; son, Tim (Jamie) Coyle of Phoenix, Arizona; daughter, Kim (Brad) Burkhart of Oswego; grandchildren, Tim Winter, Amy Winter, Kyle Burkhart, Rachel Burkhart; step-grandchildren Barry, Cory, and Ethan Hassell; great-granddaughter, Ajori Ketchelos; siblings, Al (Sandy) Coyle of Scottsdale, Arizona, David (Etta Mathis) Coyle of Savanna, Illinois, Rosemary Coyle, Donna (Jim) Parks, and Kathy Coyle all of Piggot, Arkansas, Norma Williams of Savanna, Illinois; and many nieces and nephews.

William G. Grollemond, 90, of Capron, formerly of Hampshire passed away Wednesday afternoon March 22, 2017 in his home.

He was born April 19, 1926 in Maple Park, the son of George and Loretta (Drendel) Grollemond. He was a member the 1944 class of Genoa High School. Bill married Irma M. Brown on January 12, 1946 at the St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Hampshire.

Bill was a lifelong farmer, having operated a dairy farm for many years and also raising livestock. He was a longtime member of the Farm Bureau, Farm Service and at St. Charles

Borromeo Catholic Church.

Surviving are his six children, Steven, Christine (Dan) George, Dianne Grollemond, Marlene (Mark) Broman, Russell (Barbara), Richard. 11 Grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Viola Giagnorio, Virginia Cordoba, Merle (John) Brown; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Irma on March 12, 2012; grandson, David Clifford Grollemond; and daughter in law, Theresa Grollemond.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at St. Charles Borromeo Church, Burial will follow at the St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery.

CLAUS H. JOHNSON Claus H. Johnson, formerly of Sycamore, IL passed away January 28, 2017 in San Diego, CA. Claus is survived by his sister, Sharon Johnson McNary of Vero Beach, FL. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews who live in Indiana; as well as many Hansen and Johnson cousins, including many who live in the DeKalb-Sycamore area.

His parents were Grace E. Johnson and S. Hjalmar Johnson.

Claus was a graduate of Sycamore High School. He worked for the NIU police department for a short time and then entered the United States Navy. He retired in San Diego after 20 years of military service. After his retirement, he continued to live in San Diego and worked at the Navy Exchange until his death.

He will be buried at the Miramar National Cemetery in San Diego, CA with full military honors.

SANDWICH – A game of bowling lasts 10 frames, but memories made in a bowling alley last a lifetime.

After owning and operating Idle Hour Lanes, 927 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich, for 41 years, Ron and Bonnie Miller decided to sell their bowling alley.

“It was hard to leave, but it was time to move on,” Bonnie Miller said. “Everything has changed in the sport of bowling. Pinsetters and scoring were manual – now everything is automated and computerized. We have done it a long time, and now it’s time to retire.”

The Millers sold the bowling alley last month to the family that also owns Pinheadz Bar & Grill at Yorkville Bowl in Yorkville, Roadhouse Country Bar & Grill in Yorkville and Pinheadz Entertainment Center in Naplate. Idle Hour Lanes will be renamed Pinheadz at Idle Hour Lanes.

The idea for a bowling alley started with Bonnie Miller’s father, Wesley Scent. He partnered with Arthur Andersen to build an eight-lane bowling alley in Sandwich. It was built in 1947

Bonnie Miller remembers her father going to high school football games to round up pinsetters. Ron Miller was one of the Sandwich High School students who worked at the bowling alley. He was employed there for 10 years.

In March 1972, Idle Hour Lanes was sold to Harold Jovanovich. Ron Miller purchased the bowling alley from Jovanovich in April 1976.

The Millers updated the bowling alley and added new technology throughout the years. A pro shop was opened in 1976, where a billiards lounge had been. In 1982, new wooden lanes were completed, and solar heating was added in 1983 and 1984. Computerized scoring was added in 1992, and the scoring system was modernized and overhead screens were added in 1996.

During the Millers’ time of ownership, all of their four children and one of their seven grandchildren worked at the bowling alley. Four generations of Bonnie Miller’s family worked at Idle Hour Lanes.

Although they sold the bowling alley, the Millers plan on supporting the new owners and the bowling business. Bonnie Miller still bowls with leagues at Idle Hour twice a week.

Ron Miller said he appreciates all the years of community support and the help he had from longtime employees, including Ron Henrich and Jerry Casner.

“We were lucky to be part of a community that supported us as they did – not just people from Sandwich, but from all of the surrounding towns,” Bonnie Miller said. “We have a lot of good memories and met a lot of nice people over the years. We want and hope for the bowling alley to continue. It just won’t be in our family anymore.”

Changes to the bowling alley

The bowling alley’s new general manager, Brandon Partridge, said that although Idle Hour will be the third bowling alley he will manage, it still will be a family business.

“My family wants to keep Ron and Bonnie’s legacy going,” Partridge said.

“We couldn’t have asked for nicer people to buy from. We want to add to what they’ve done over the years.”

Since the bowling alley changed hands, 15 TVs, six 112-inch projector screens, two jukeboxes, new chairs, black lights for cosmic bowling and six draft lines of beer have been added.

Changes expected in the coming year include installing new flooring, adding two rectangular tables per set of lanes and five live video gaming machines, and expanding the arcade to include skee ball and other games. New rental bowling balls and shoes also will be offered.

One place that’s off the road that many people find tempting is in the Big Rock Forest Preserve.

“There’s a lake, and it’s very dangerous,” Gilloffo said.

“The rangers make that one of

their patrol areas. They just tell the kids, and they get out.

“They can get back into more remote areas that are only accessible on foot or on horse.”

Daryl Paddock is the president of the Kane County Mounted Rangers. As do his fellow rangers, he wears an official uniform and has a badge.

“I’ve been doing it for the last three years,” Paddock said. “It’s the camaraderie between the people, and it’s just one of those things that you get hooked on. You’re riding your horse and helping at the same time. What could be better than that?”

Horse lovers can probably relate to Paddock’s philosophy on the animals.

“I call it my sanity,” he said.

“If I’m in a bad mood, then I’ll go out with my horse for an hour and feel better. ... I’m a young 72 years old, and I don’t feel like I’m 72. I still ride my horses. ... The little boy in me wants to be a cowboy.”

The Kane County Mounted Rangers are seeking new members. Participants must be at least 21 years old.

For about 30 years, the Kane County Mounted Rangers group and its horses have been patrolling Kane County forest preserves with the intention of deterring crime. The volunteers also carry first-aid kits, do search and rescue, direct traffic for cross country races and march in parades.

“They’re a wonderful group of people, and they’re a tremendous help,” said Mike Gilloffo, chief of police for the Forest Preserve District of Kane County. “We have over 90 properties scattered all over the county, and trying to patrol those with the police I have budgeted is a tremendous task.”

There are many forest preserve areas that the forest preserve police can’t access from their vehicles, and it’s those areas where people often might be tempted to go against the warning signs. Many times, the warnings are about safety. It is in these areas that the

Paddock said that people skills are just as important.

“Rangers represent the forest preserve in a warm and professional manner,” he said.

“One of the skills we look for is how you interact with the general public.”

The horses also have to be friendly and capable of remaining calm among crowds of people or in the presence of loud sounds.

The community of volunteer rangers also is appealing to many who join the group, which has regular meetings and always patrols in pairs.

Chicago father, twin sons sentenced for sex trafficking

CHICAGO – A Chicago father and his twin sons have been sentenced for running a sex trafficking business with underage girls.

Nathan Nicholson was sentenced to 16½ years in prison, and his sons, Tyrelle and Myrelle Lockett, were sentenced to 17½years in prison each, the Chicago Tribune reported. The three men pleaded guilty last year to one count each of sex trafficking of a minor.

Prosecutors said the brothers solicited victims at malls in Chicago and northwest Indiana as well as over social media.

Clifford “Cliff” C. Miller, 72, of Pingree Grove, formerly of Plato Center, succumbed to pancreatic cancer after a courageous battle, on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at home where he was surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on January 14, 1945 in Elgin the son of Robert D. and Eleanor J. (Burnidge) Miller. Cliff worked for 43 years in Elgin as a barber, he was at the Razor’s Edge for 25 years before opening Cliff’s Barber Shop in October 1992, retiring in 2008. Cliff was an avid sportsman enjoying hunting and fishing.

His greatest passions were watching his children and grandchildren’s school and sporting events. Cliff enjoyed watching the Cubs and the Fighting Illini. He was a member of St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Plato. His infectious smile will be missed by all who knew him.

Man sentenced to life for 2011 slaying of parents

BRIDGEVIEW– A suburban Chicago man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2011 slaying of his parents.

The Daily Southtown reported 22-yearold John Granat Jr. was given the punishment Thursday for the deaths of John Granat Sr. and Maria Granat. Authorities said the couple’s skulls were crushed with aluminum bats and the dying mother was repeatedly stabbed.

Authorities said Granat Jr., who was 17 Jr., Dennis (Judith) Miller, Kimberly (David) Olson. Many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Robert D. Miller Sr.; sister-in-law, Charlene Miller.

Glenwood Carol “Casey” O’Dell Sr., was born March 1, 1928 in Braymer, Missouri.

He passed away March 17, 2017 at his home in North Fork, California with his family by his side.

Casey worked as the Vice President of Lennox Industries. Casey’s hobbies included golfing, walking, and traveling around the world, and for over 10 years covered the United States, Canada and Mexico in a motor home with his devoted wife Carlene. They

years old at the time, arranged for three friends to help kill his parents at the Palos Heights home.

He was charged days after the killings when his alibi fell apart. In the days after the deaths, Granat’s friends continued to attend high school before being arrested.

Two pleaded guilty and are in prison.

Christopher Wyma was convicted and is due in court Friday.

Judge imposes sentence in Chicago school bribery case

CHICAGO – A federal judge on Friday sentenced the owner of two education-services companies to a seven-year prison term, after prosecutors painted him as the “mastermind” behind bribes and kickbacks made to the former head of Chicago Public Schools.

Gary Solomon’s sentencing comes after a plea agreement last year. As part of that agreement he admitted he offered former school district CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett bribes and kickbacks in exchange for her steering $23 million in contracts to loved visiting family and friends during their travels.

Casey served proudly in the United States Marines Corps from 1946-52. He was a combat Veteran of the Korean War, and will be buried with military honors.

Unemployment rate drops below 6 percent in February

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Employment Security said the state’s unemployment rate fell below 6 percent in February.

The drop to 5.4 percent leaves Illinois’ jobless rate at its lowest since late 2007.

GOP’s push to repeal health care law fails The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – In a humiliating failure, President Donald Trump and GOP leaders yanked their bill to repeal “Obamacare” off the House floor Friday when it became clear it would fail badly – after seven years of nonstop railing against the health care law.

Democrats said Americans can “breathe a sigh of relief.”

Trump said Obama’s law was imploding “and soon will explode.”

Thwarted by two factions of fellow Republicans, from the center and far right, House Speaker Paul Ryan said President Barack Obama’s health care law, the GOP’s No. 1 target in the new Trump administration, will remain in place “for the foreseeable future.”

It was a stunning defeat for the new president after he had demanded House Republicans delay no longer and vote on the legislation Friday, pass or fail.

His gamble failed. Instead Trump, who campaigned as a master deal-maker and claimed that he alone could fix the nation’s health care system, saw his ultimatum rejected by Republican lawmakers who made clear they answer to their own voters, not to the president.

He had “never said repeal and replace it in 64 days,” a dejected but still combative Trump said at the White House, although he had repeatedly shouted during the presidential campaign that it was going down “immediately.”

The bill was withdrawn just minutes before the House vote was to occur, and lawmaker said there were no plans to revisit the issue. Republicans will try to move ahead on other agenda items, including overhauling the tax code, although the failure on the health bill can only make whatever comes next immeasurably harder.

But when asked how Republicans could face voters after their failure to make good on years of promises, Ryan quietly said: “It’s a really good question. I wish I had a better answer for you.”

Last fall, Republicans used the issue to gain and keep control of the White House, Senate and House. During the previous years, they had cast dozens of votes to repeal Obama’s law in full or in part, but when they finally got the chance to pass a repeal

version that actually had a chance to become law, they couldn’t deliver.

Democrats could hardly contain their satisfaction.

“Today is a great day for our country, what happened on the floor is a victory for the American people,” said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who as speaker herself helped Obama pass the Affordable Care Act in the first place. “Let’s just for a moment breathe a sigh of relief for the American people.”

The outcome leaves both Ryan and Trump weakened politically.

For the president, this piles a big early congressional defeat onto the continuing inquiries into his presidential campaign’s Russia connections and his unfounded wiretapping allegations against Obama.

Ryan was not able to corral the House Freedom Caucus, the restive band of conservatives that ousted the previous speaker. Those Republicans wanted the bill to go much further, while some GOP moderates felt it went too far.

Instead of picking up support as Friday wore on, the bill went the other direction, with several key lawmakers coming out in opposition.

Trump campaign chair offers to talk on Russia The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump’s former campaign manager, a key figure in investigations into the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, has volunteered to be interviewed by lawmakers as part of an increasingly partisan House probe of the Kremlin’s alleged meddling in the 2016 election.

The chairman of the House intelligence committee, Rep. Devin Nunes, on Friday announced the prospect of an interview with Paul Manafort, and Nunes canceled a previously scheduled public hearing in which former Obama administration officials had agreed to testify about the Russia investigation. Manafort also volunteered to be interviewed by the Senate intelligence committee, which is conducting its own investigation. It was not clear whether Manafort had offered to testify under oath or in a public hearing.

Manafort volunteered to be interviewed the same week that FBI director James Comey confirmed the

existence of an ongoing counterintelligence investigation into possible Trump associates’ coordination with Russia and just days after an Associated Press report revealed Manafort worked with a Russian billionaire with ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin a decade ago.

The confirmation of an ongoing FBI investigation was a blow to the White House, which has described the Russia probe as a ruse. And the new details about Manafort’s ties to a close Putin ally appear to contradict what Trump has previously said about Manafort’s connections.

In February, Manafort said he was never involved with “anything to do with the Russian government or the Putin administration.” Trump has used the denials to assert that “to the best of his knowledge” none of his associates has anything to do with Russia.

But documents obtained by the AP reveal Manafort had sought work from a Putin ally and proposed a campaign that he said could “greatly benefit the Putin government.”

BIRMINGHAM, England – Long before his short stints in jail turned into years behind bars, Khalid Masood was known as Adrian Elms, with a reputation for drinking and an unpredictable temper.

At least twice he was convicted of violent crimes, well before he stabbed a police officer to death Wednesday in London with a motion that one horrified witness described as “playing a drum on your back with two knives.”

But as he checked out of his hotel to head toward London for his deadly rampage, the manager said he was struck by his guest’s friendly manner.

Within hours, Masood drove his rented SUV across the crowded Westminster Bridge, leaving a trail of dead and wounded. Then he jumped out and attacked Constable Keith Palmer, an officer guarding Parliament, stabbing him to death before being shot to death by police.

In all, he killed four people and left more than two dozen hospitalized.

Masood, who at 52 is considerably older than most extremists who carry out bloodshed in the West, had an arrest record dating to 1983. The violence came later, first in 2000 when he

the identity of the London attacker.

“What a pity they didn’t realize he was a nutter,” she said.

Police are combing through “massive amounts of computer data” and have contacted 3,500 witnesses as they look for clues as to why the British-born man launched the deadly attack.

“Clearly that’s a main line of our investigation is what led him to be radicalized: Was it through influences in our community, influences from overseas or through online propaganda?

Our investigations and our arrests will help in that, but the public appeal will make a big difference if people come forward with more information,” said Britain’s top counterterrorism officer, Mark Rowley.

A security official who spoke Friday on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about an ongoing investigation confirmed that Masood had spent time in Saudi Arabia but said investigators were still trying to determine how long he stayed and what he was doing.

Prime Minister Theresa May said Masood was “investigated in relation to concerns about violent extremism” years ago. But she called him “a peripheral figure.”

Top generals ask Congress to back war on terror

Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford found something constructive to tell senators on an appropriations subcommittee this week, even if it had nothing to do with the Pentagon budget. The two Marines, Mattis is a retired general, challenged lawmakers to finally provide a legal basis for the U.S. war against terrorist groups.

It’s something that President Barack Obama was never able to get from Congress. So instead, for his entire presidency, Obama based U.S. counterterrorism efforts abroad mostly on the authorization for the use of force that Congress passed shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks. The logical problem here is obvious: Today’s biggest terrorist enemies – groups such as Islamic State, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, and al-Shabaab in Somalia – didn’t exist in 2001. Thus it’s absurd to say they count among the terrorists who “planned, authorized, committed or aided” the Sept. 11 atrocities. Nor are they covered by the follow-on 2002 authorization to invade Iraq.

This is more than legal semantics. Congress has for too long abdicated its role in American war-making, another example of it ceding ever-more ground to the executive branch on matters of highest national importance.

And now that President Donald Trump is reportedly looking at counterterrorism actions going well beyond the Obama approach – including bringing Islamic State members and other new terrorists to Guantanamo Bay, and loosening the rules on and broadening the air war in Yemen and Somalia – the legal precariousness poses a tangible threat.

Any new detainees brought to Gitmo would have a strong claim to U.S. courts that their imprisonment is illegal, while international authorities could more easily make the case that drone strikes in Somalia or Yemen are war crimes.

Of course, there are many issues to be hashed out on the language of a new measure. Would it have geographic constraints, or allow the U.S. the fight the jihadists wherever they go? Would it be indefinite or have a sunset date of two or three years?

Would it replace the 2001 measure or just augment it?

In any case, a new authorization should include requirements for the administration to report regularly to lawmakers and the public on where actions have taken place and what groups have been added to the target list.

But before Congress can even start grappling with these questions, it needs to get serious about its constitutional requirement to get involved.

Let’s hope Mattis and Dunford gave lawmakers the boost of courage they needed.

Juvenile records require delicate treatment Believing doesn’t make it true, and when it comes to court records, it’s not belief that counts.

Consider this widely held belief that juveniles with a criminal record get a fresh start when they turn 18. Lawyers believe it and so do their clients. Judges believe it, and so do the clerks who manage the records.

But the problem is that it’s only sort of true.

A recent study by researchers at the Muskie School of Government at the University of Southern Maine found that there is a widespread misunderstanding about the law. A juvenile criminal record can be sealed by a court, but the process is not automatic and past offenses might be showing up in a job seeker’s criminal background checks without his knowledge, making a smooth transition to a straight and narrow adulthood tougher than necessary.

The report “Unsealed Fate: The Unintended Consequences of Inadequate Safeguarding of Juvenile Records in Maine” found few people who understood how

the system really works.

“The myth of records being sealed automatically at 18 was being repeated by so many different players,” said Susy Hawes, one of the study’s authors. “Everyone we spoke to in the system had that belief. It’s a vicious cycle of believing something and then hearing it again and believing it.”

Juvenile records are treated differently than those of adults for a good reason. The juvenile system is designed to rehabilitate a young person who has made some bad choices during a time when their brains are not fully formed. Most young people get through that period without violating the law with support from good families and strong communities, but even the best kids can be led astray.

It’s right to expect an adult to live with the consequences of his choices for the rest of his life, but it’s in the interest of both the juvenile and society in general to give them another chance to get on the right track.

Aside from the fact that it isn’t

well understood, there is nothing wrong with the current law.

A juvenile has to wait three years after a conviction to petition the court to have his record sealed.

To have a chance at closing that chapter of his life from others’ eyes, the offender has to have a clean record, paid all fines and completed all other instructions and requirements. Even then a judge could refuse to grant the petition, and the former juvenile offender cannot appeal.

It’s a good law because it gives a youthful offender the incentive to straighten out his act.

The law gives the court a chance to help a kid who made a mistake while protecting the community from someone who would hide behind juvenile confidentiality while continuing to commit crimes.

Hopefully, this report will be used by lawyers, judges, clerks and probation officers in their training so they can give young offenders and their families the correct information.

To the Editor: Having spent more than 20 years in DeKalb politics as the mayor of DeKalb, I have seen all varieties of political wannabes and a vast level of talent in the City Hall staff area, and can be very objective in seeing who can lead the city.

I met Michael Embrey 35 years ago when he was the Northern Illinois University band director. He wanted to help in promoting the city of DeKalb.

After he left the university, I recruited him and several successful business owners to head our city tourism and special events commission. Michael and his team took the project seriously and scheduled a meeting with the governor of Illinois and many state legislators (including our area state Rep. John Countryman) to showcase DeKalb attractions.

When Jack Holloway was chairing the Corn Fest, Michael and the tourism team stepped up to support and promote the event.

When concerns about liquor licenses became a political issue, I asked Michael to be on the Liquor Commission because of his concerns for business owners who were assessed fees and being fined by the city staff.

If you look at the resumes of all the candidates running for the office of mayor, Michael Embrey’s will stand above the rest. He has great qualification as a leader, but also involves team leadership to create success.

Michael has the skills to lead: He is able to make quality decisions, knows how to build a winning team, leads by example, is a problem-solver and a great facilitator with outstanding negotiation skills.

He will lead by example and if challenged by an issue, will seek the answer from other professionals. He is a visionary with high standards, strong moral character, compassionate to all around him, and someone who truly cares about the future of DeKalb.

When you see three former mayors of DeKalb (Bessie Chronopoulos, Susan Allen and myself), former DeKalb City Manager Jim Connors, and former DeKalb City Clerk Liz Peerboom endorse Michael Embrey, you know there is both respect and admiration for this candidate’s success.

It encompasses the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the able-bodied and disabled, the educated and the uneducated – it encompasses those who have and those who have not.

It seeks to include the weak and the voiceless at a place at the table.

Under John’s leadership, the city has completed 20 recent business starts and remodels. Two downtown projects are on the way – DeKalb Cornerstone and Sundog IT. He has supported the Back to School Bash in August at Welsh Park, with New Hope Baptist as sponsors, and Northern Illinois Food Bank providing food for University Village residents.

At University Village, the new Evergreen Management listens to the tenants and is responsive to needs. Security Properties has begun remodeling.

The city has begun weekly pre-permit inspections, monitoring progress.

To the Editor: After one candidate dropped out of the race, there are now nine candidates for election to the three openings on the DeKalb School District 428 Board.

The candidates come from diverse ethnic backgrounds. This is a clear indication that the board has some issues that need to be addressed. I would offer that there also needs to be some diversity in the process of selecting a new superintendent of schools.

In my experience, the current path to select a new superintendent, a path that will virtually close a week before the new board member will be elected, will offer us no diverse candidates with bold solutions to pressing problems within the district.

I have attended District 428 board meetings and am appalled at the fact that the board is poised to continue making the same mistakes it has in the past. Except for Brian Ali, the district has been plagued with a series of bad superintendents and administrators, including those involved in the latest scandal.

This is largely because of the board’s determination to follow the same hiring processes that have gotten the district to where it is now. Seventy percent of new Sycamore residents are DeKalb people of all ethnicities moving there seeking better schools for their children.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Hiring a search firm to prescreen applicants for the District 428 superintendent position with virtually all of the work completed a week before the election April 4 is both anti-democratic and ill-advised.

It is destined to get DeKalb the same kind of candidate for superintendent as we have had in the past. Of course, the search firm is in a hurry to complete

its work. Search firms don’t make any money if the process drags out. But in our case, we need more time to recruit candidates, and for the community, as well as its new board, to be involved.

DeKalb needs new direction from its next superintendent and administrators.

We need to slow the current process down so that the new board, of which I hope to be a member, can reintroduce democracy into District 428, and hire the kind of superintendent that will not be forced to leave his or her position in disgrace. We need a superintendent who will be able to finally start to solve DeKalb’s problems rather than put BandAids on them.

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – When the Northern Illinois football team was running team drills, Jordan Lynch stood 10 yards behind the offense with his arms crossed and a whistle around his neck.

He looked like coach Jordan Lynch.

The first-year running backs coach and the Huskies completed their third spring practice on a windy Friday night at Huskie Stadium.

“I’m still trying to get my coaching attire, I’m going to wear a visor soon,” Lynch laughed. “It’s a different feeling, but it’s good.”

Lynch, who recently walked away from his playing career to take the coaching position with his alma mater, had plenty of energy Friday. During team drills, running back Dwayne Milton broke off a long run, and Lynch hurried over

to give him an emphatic high-five after the play.

“As a competitor, absolutely, every time I go out there I want to strap them up, but that’s not going to happen,” said Lynch, who said he incorporated running back drills he ran during his brief stint with the Bears in 2014 for his practices with the Huskies. “I’m going to have to compete with my players, and that’s a new way for me to compete. It’s going great; it’s definitely a new adjustment, but I’m adapting pretty quick.”

For one of the Huskies running backs, Lynch is a familiar face – and not just because he’s plastered on the walls of the Yordon Center. Redshirt senior back Jordan Huff was a true freshman when Lynch was a senior in 2013, when the former NIU quarterback was a Heisman Trophy candidate.

“It’s kind of different. I still don’t call him coach Lynch, I just call him Lynch,” Huff said with a laugh. “It’s

different, but we make it work.”

Huff has by far the most experience among the running backs in the Huskies’ spring camp. As a junior last season, he finished second on the team with 703 yards on 111 carries (a 6.3 average) and scored five touchdowns while being the No. 2 back behind Joel Bouagnon.

In a comeback win over Eastern Michigan, the 5-foot-11, 213-pound Huff racked up a season-high 173 yards and three touchdowns to get the Huskies back in the game in the second half.

“Obviously, he’s a home run hitter, and that’s his biggest strength, and it’s probably his weakness – he tries to hit it too much, he’ll tell you that,” NIU coach Rod Carey said.

“He needs to work on that.”

Huff said during the spring he’s working on blocking and run reads, while trying to make the younger backs better.

“Physically, he’s a bigger back – him and Tommy Mister (6-0, 213 pounds) would fit that – but just because they’re bigger backs doesn’t mean they aren’t home-run-hitter types,” Carey said of Harbison. “They’re physical, downhill guys, but they have the ability to go, as well.”

Harbison’s new running back coach has liked what he’s seen, too.

“Tre has all the intangibles to be a great running back, that’s what I see in Tre,” Lynch said. “He’s young, so he’s sort of learning his way and learning the playbook, but I like what I see out of him so far.”

CHICAGO – Welcome to Jimmy Butler Island.

Population: One. But even 36 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds in 42 minutes from the three-time All-Star couldn’t save the rest of the roster in Friday night’s 117-104 embarrassing loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Then again, maybe some rosters aren’t even worth saving this time of year.

“We do enough talking around here as it is,” Butler said, when asked if this latest loss would force yet another team meeting. “I think everybody knows where we stand right now – on the outside looking in. Everybody knows where we want to be. Ain’t too much to say. Nine more, right, nine? We gotta have ’em. As we said before the game, as we’ll say tomorrow, and the day after that, probably the day after that. We gotta have ’em.”

In case the sting wasn’t painful enough, this loss came on the same night as stumbles by other Eastern Conference playoff wannabe teams such as Indiana and Detroit. As usual for this Bulls team, when a door gets open, they can’t help but shut it on their own hands.

The loss dropped them to 34-39, and left them still a game

this season, but against a now 27-win team? Inexcusable.

After the starters gave the second unit a cushion – thanks to 11 first-quarter points from Butler and another 10 from Nikola Mirotic – the Bulls watched that 28-24 lead quickly disintegrate. And even more alarming, it wasn’t like the 76ers blew by them from longrange, either.

No, it was right in the faces of the Bulls, attacking the paint with devastating efficiency.

By the time the halftime horn sounded, the Bulls allowed 35 second-quarter points, while 40 of their 59 halftime points came in the paint.

As for that second unit that general manager Gar Forman has deemed the future of the franchise? Denzel Valentine was a minus 10 in the plus/ minus category, while Bobby Portis was a minus 12 and Joffrey Lauvergne was a minus 17.

But surely there would have to be some sort of rally after such an awful showing?

Some sort of pulse in the wake of Hoiberg’s halftime chat?

Not this Bulls team.

By the end of the third quarter they were outscored 34-25, with 26 of Philadelphia’s scoring in that stanza again coming from inside the paint. The 76ers finished the night with 70 points in the paint.

Bettman unlikely to budge on Olympics

Commish: There’s no benefit for owners for NHL to continue to partake in Olympics

mpotash@suntimes.com CHICAGO – NHL commissioner Gary Bettman joked about not being the most popular guy in town – any town – when he spoke at the City Club of Chicago breakfast Friday at Maggiano’s at Clark and Grand.

“If I get a little light-headed, it’s because I’m not used to hearing all this clapping,” Bettman said to laughter at the sold-out event. “I was in Las Vegas in November to announce the team name for [the expansion Las Vegas Golden Knights]. I get introduced and I started getting booed. And I’m actually chuckling to myself … an expansion team was just granted – what possibly could they be complaining about?”

When it comes to popularity among sports commissioners, the NBA’s Adam Silver is the only one who truly fits the category, with baseball’s Rob Manfred in second place. Bettman ranks ahead of only football’s almost universally loathed Roger Goodell – which is like saying the Arizona Coyotes rank only ahead of the pathetic Colorado Avalanche in the NHL.

The upcoming tempest over the NHL’s participation in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea is the latest quandary that likely will sink Bettman’s popularity to a new low.

Thanks to Bettman’s initiative, NHL players have participated in the Olympics since 1998. It’s been a boon for the players and for hockey fans. But Bettman reiterated Friday that “if nothing changes, I don’t see any way we’re participating” in the Olympics.

What changed? NHL owners “overwhelmingly” have come to the conclusion that they’re not getting any return for shutting down their league in the prime of its season, Bettman said. It’s just not worth the hassle of having a compressed schedule, risking players getting injured and restarting the sea-

“The league isn’t anti-Olympics.

Clubs are anti-disruption-to-the-season,” Bettman said. “To disappear for almost three weeks in February, when there’s no football, there’s no baseball – it’s only basketball and us. There’s no programming for the NHL Network, NHL.com, for all our social media platforms. We just disappear.”

Bettman wants a much better deal.

The players enjoy participating and fans enjoy watching it. But what’s in it for the owners?

“When you piece it all together you say, ‘Why are we doing this?’ ” he said.

“We’ve done it five times, and while it was my idea initially and it seemed like a good idea at the time, I can’t tell

you there’s any tangible benefit, particularly here in North America, of doing it. We are shut out of the Olympics – we cannot promote with the Olympic rings logo. We don’t get highlights. We can’t do anything other than let our players show up. That has been a bone of contention.”

The International Olympic Committee’s decision last year to not pay the expenses for NHL players to participate in the Olympics – including insurance – seems to have been the final straw.

“If they don’t value our participation, what are we doing?” Bettman said.

The IOC since has “retreated” on that position, Bettman acknowledged, but that didn’t cheer him up. It remains to be seen whether there’s any deal sweet enough to change the NHL’s mind.

“I don’t know (what it would take),” Bettman said. “It’s something I would have to go back to the clubs on, because the clubs are overwhelmingly negative on the subject.

“It’s not incumbent on us … to figure out a solution. If somebody has a notion as to what might make sense, we’ll listen. I’m not sure it’ll make the difference, but we’ll listen.”

Bettman sounds as is he’s made his decision and is willing to live with the consequences of disappointed players and unhappy fans. This isn’t a popularity contest. And he’s comfortable with that. He never forgets he was hired, not elected.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS LAKE FOREST – The Bears continued their quarterback makeover Friday by signing veteran Mark Sanchez, who is expected to back up Mike Glennon next season.

The Bears are coming off a season in which they went 3-13 and finished last in the NFC North. The Bears cut quarterback Jay Cutler this month after Mark Sanchez eight seasons and the next day signed Glennon of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a three-year deal.

Sanchez, signed to a one-year contract, gives them an experienced backup. With three quarterbacks, including developmental prospect Connor Shaw, the Bears have some flexibility to ad-

dress other positions in the draft next month.

The Bears own the No. 3 pick and need to find a long-term solution behind center. General manager Ryan Pace did not pick a quarterback in his first two drafts even though he talked about taking one every year when he was hired.

Sanchez was released by Denver last year after losing a preseason competition for the starting job to Trevor Siemian. He backed up NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Dak Prescott in Dallas, playing in two games for the Cowboys and throwing for 93 yards on 10 of 18 attempts. He spent five of his eight seasons in the NFL with the New York Jets before going to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The former Southern California star has appeared in six playoff games.

He was selected fifth overall in the 2009 draft.

Russell’s soreness also was said to be no cause for concern, and Maddon said he expected Russell back in the lineup by early in the week.

And Ben Zobrist, who has missed the past three games because of a stiff neck, could be back by Saturday or Sunday, Maddon said.

The Cubs have enough posi tion-player depth to weather almost any injury storm (see: Kyle Schwarber, circa 2016).

But even the supposedly minor, short-term tweaks and tightness issues get bigger as roster-decision time gets closer and bear watching over the next week.

for an opener for which the game-time temperature is expected to be in the 50s with a 60 percent chance of rain.

A shorter disabled list that goes into effect this year (10 days instead of 15) could make it an easier call to start a player on the DL with something minor.

That’s not expected to be the case at this point.

But a scenario like that would have the immediate effect of resolving, short-term at least, the call on the final bench spot – between out-of-options outfielder Matt Szczur and infielder Tommy La Stella.

It also potentially would create an everyday role to start the season for infielder Javy Baez, the celebrated postseason regular who entered camp in a utility role despite being the Cubs’ best defensive player at multiple infield spots.

On the pitching side, left-handed reliever Brian Duensing returned from two weeks addressing a back issue Thursday to pitch an inning, and Friday morning he said he felt good and plans to pitch again Sunday in Las Vegas.

His health, and the continued health of the rest of the projected pitching roster, all but assures a 13-man staff to open the season, which creates the short bench and the Szczur-La Stella choice.

MESA, Ariz. – It seemed like something might be amiss when Carlos Rodon, taking it so easy getting started during the first week or so of spring training, wouldn’t even make short flips to a base during fielding drills or play light catch.

Rodon and the Sox, however, insisted his arm was healthy, and in part because of previously unreported fatigue experienced during the 2016 season said he was easing his way into the season. When he made his first start of the spring Sunday against the Angels in Tempe, Arizona, all was well. The 24-year-old left-hander struck out five, walked one, gave up one hit in four innings and appeared on track to start the Sox’s fifth game of the season.

He felt so good coming out of that start he asked about being moved up to start the second game of the season instead of the fifth, where he was pen-

ciled in as part of the plan.

On Thursday, however, the Sox slammed on the brakes after Rodon said he felt tightness in his upper left biceps. And although he said he felt well enough to make his scheduled start against the A’s on Friday, he was scratched and sent for an MRI, which revealed no structural damage.

General manager Carlos Rodon Rick Hahn said it was likely the Sox’s prized former No. 3 overall draft pick would start the season on the disabled list, however.

This issue is unrelated to the plan to start him slowly, Hahn said.

“No,” Hahn said. “I don’t know if ‘ironic’ is the right word, but we tried to come up with a plan to keep him healthy for the long term, and toward the end of this plan he expressed this discomfort [Thursday]. Again, he was feeling great

with how he was coming along, with the program we had set up. Sometimes you make plans and the baseball gods laugh.”

Hahn mentioned left-hander David Holmberg, right-hander Tyler Danish and right-hander Dylan Covey as potential fill-ins to cover Rodon’s innings.

“We’re going to err on the side of caution, even if it winds up costing him his first couple starts,” Hahn said. “It’s too early to speculate how long we’re going to be without Carlos.

“We’ll know more after he takes his further exams.”

After team doctors checked him out Thursday and indicated there was no structural damage, Rodon said he would pitch through it Friday, but “we need to take this step and feel more confident about the prognosis,” Hahn said.

Rodon and the team will get a second opinion next week.

“We’ll know more maybe Tuesday or so in terms of what exactly we’re dealing with,” Hahn said.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS MEMPHIS, Tenn. – De’Aaron Fox scored a career-high 39 points as Kentucky beat UCLA, 86-75, Friday night in a showdown between two of college basketball’s goliaths for a spot in the South Regional final.

The only No. 2 seed to survive and advance, the Wildcats (32-5) won their 14th straight game. Now the NCAA’s winningest program will play another of basketball’s titans Sunday in top-seeded North Carolina with a trip to yet another Final Four on the line.

The third-seeded Bruins (31-5) still have the most national titles. Yet they leave their third Sweet 16 under coach Steve Alford short of the Elite Eight.

North Carolina 92, Butler 80: Joel Berry II scored 26 points and Justin Jackson added 24 as top-seeded North Carolina moved to the Elite Eight with a victory over Butler in the NCAA South Region Luke Maye recorded his first career double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, helping fuel a quick start for Carolina (30-7).

NEW YORK – Apparently South Carolina is getting the hang of winning NCAA tournament games.

The Gamecocks, who hadn’t won a tournament game since 1973, got their third this year. One more and it’s on to the Final Four.

“It’s a great win for the program,” Gamecocks guard Duane Notice said. “It’s a good feeling when we continue to make history and I think once we get a taste of it, we kind of get addicted and want to continue doing it.”

Carbon monoxide easy to detect Dear Doctor: I have heard several stories on the news recently about carbon monoxide-related deaths, and they have me concerned. Where does carbon monoxide come from, and how do I protect my family?

Dear Reader: Carbon monoxide, also referred to as CO, is a colorless and odorless gas that is impossible to detect without specialized equipment. Because of that, it has been called the “invisible killer.”

About 400 people die each year from CO poisoning, and another 20,000 seek medical treatment.

In the home, carbon monoxide can be produced by fuel-powered devices like stoves, furnaces, water heaters, dryers, boilers and lanterns. It is emitted by wood-burning fireplaces, charcoal grills and generators. Virtually any substance that contains carbon and can burn will produce carbon monoxide as a byproduct.

The reason carbon monoxide is so toxic is that, when we breathe it in, it takes the place of oxygen in our red blood cells. In fact, the chemical structure of CO is such that it binds far more readily to the hemoglobin in our blood than does oxygen.

When you’re breathing in an enclosed space where CO is present, your body will become starved for oxygen in a very short time. Cells and tissues that are denied oxygen quickly begin to die. Brain cells, for example, begin to die after just three minutes without oxygen. Beyond that, permanent brain damage begins.

Now, some good news. The presence of carbon monoxide in the home is easily detected by special alarms. Just like a smoke alarm, the CO alarm contains specialized sensors that will activate when the gas approaches unsafe levels. These alarms, which can plug into electric outlets and also have backup batteries, are sensitive, accurate and affordable. In many states,

It is recommended that a CO alarm with a backup battery be installed on every level of the family residence, including the basement, attic and garage. There should also be a CO alarm outside of each sleeping area.

There are several other steps that you can take to keep your family safe.

• Perform a monthly test of each CO alarm to be sure it is working.

• Keep a supply of extra batteries on hand, so they can be replaced right away.

• When you use your fireplace, be sure the damper is wide open. Leave it open until the ashes have completely cooled.

• Never use your gas stove or oven to heat a room in your home.

• Never use a portable generator in the house or in any enclosed space. Generators should be kept at least 20 feet from the home when in use.

• Don’t use a gas or charcoal grill inside the home. Be sure to operate grills far away from any open windows.

• Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning: weakness, dizziness, sleepiness, headache, weak pulse, nausea, vomiting and confusion.

If you suspect that you or a family member has CO poisoning, immediately go outside to the fresh air, and then call 911.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY sister, “Maddy,” is in 12th grade Jeanne and will graduate Phillips soon. Over the last two years, we have grown really close. We have the closest relationship in the family, and I consider her my best friend. Although I have many close friends, her being my sister makes her the closest to me.

Lately, I’ve been mad at her. I thought for a while it was because she got a boyfriend, but her boyfriend is like a brother to me and we get along great. After hearing her say, “Only a couple of more months ’til I’m done with school forever,” I have realized I’m mad because she’s graduating soon. I have two younger sisters, but we aren’t nearly as close as Maddy and I are. For the past month, I’ve been saying no when Maddy and her boyfriend ask me to hang out with them.

I’m afraid that because of this I’m going to lose the bond I have with my sister. I don’t want her to graduate because it means she’ll be moving away, and I won’t get to see my best friend every day. I don’t know whether to be happy about her graduating, or angry. Please help me. – Mixed

Did you see the play “Copenhagen,” in which the playwright, Michael Frayn, claims that Heisenberg purposely derailed the German attempt to build a nuclear weapon in World War II? Was that true?

In this four-heart contract, it would be difficult to avoid a losing line of play. What should South do after West leads the spade king?

North’s four-diamond response was a Texas transfer.

Most players would win with the spade ace, draw trumps ending in the dummy and run the diamond 10. West would take the trick and shift to a club. Declarer would win with dummy’s ace and take a second diamond finesse, then grumble when it also lost: down one.

An expert wonders if there is a way to execute an endplay. To do that, he has to eliminate the pointed suits without East’s taking a trick and shifting to a diamond. How? The key is to let West take the first trick. Suppose he reads partner’s spade two as a suit-preference signal for the lower-ranking side suit and switches to a club. Declarer wins, draws trumps ending in hand, discards a club on the spade ace and pitches dummy’s last club on the spade jack.

West wins and leads a club (best), but declarer ruffs high on the board, crosses to his hand with a trump, ruffs his last club and runs the diamond 10. West is endplayed, forced either to return a diamond or to concede a ruff-and-sluff.
