Woman charged with injuring READER POLL police officer, fleeing scene DAILY CHRONICLE

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – A Sycamore woman faces multiple felony charges after allegedly injuring a police officer with her car door and then fleeing Thursday morning.

The incident occurred after police were called at 9:55 a.m. to a home in the 1000 block of Michael Street, where Hannah Pumfrey, 24, was involved in a dispute with a family member, according to a Sycamore Police Department news release.

While a Sycamore officer was talking to her, Pumfrey got into a car and tried to back out of the driveway with the driver’s-side door open, police said. As the car backed up, the door hit and pinned the officer against a police car parked in the driveway, according to the release.

Police said Pumfrey then drove away, parked the vehicle a few blocks away and

walked off. She was found walking in the neighborhood a few minutes later and arrested.

A Sycamore Fire Department ambulance took the officer to Kishwaukee Hospital with injuries that were not Hannah life-threatening, police said.

Pumfrey Pumfrey was charged with leaving the scene of an injury accident, aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated resisting a peace officer, aggravated reckless driving, aggravated obstructing a peace officer and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia in connection with the incident.

If convicted of the most serious charge, aggravated battery to a police officer, she could face two to five years in prison.

Pumfrey was being held Thursday afternoon at the DeKalb County Jail pending a bond hearing.

LOCAL BRIEFS Cortland voters invited to ‘Meet the Candidates’ event

CORTLAND – Cortland voters are invited to a “Meet the Candidates” event Friday sponsored by the Cortland Lions Club and Cortland Community Library.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Lion’s Den, 70 S. Llanos St. in Cortland.

Candidates for DeKalb and Sycamore school boards, Cortland Township, the town of Cortland and Cortland library will be introduced.

An informal meet and greet will be at 6:30 p.m., and written questions will be collected before 7 p.m. when DeKalb County Board Chairman Mark Pietrowski Jr. introduces the candidates.

Time constraints may limit each candidate to a five-minute introductory speech, listing their qualifications, interests, issues and reasons for seeking the office. They may bring handouts for voters.

Twenty candidates have indicated they will be

present to meet the public, according to a news release. Races for Cortland mayor, town clerk and town trustees are contested.

Sycamore High School group seeks donations for post-prom prizes

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore High School Post Prom Committee is seeking donations of money or gift certificates to offer as prizes during its annual post-prom event May 14.

The event is meant to offer students a fun, safe function to attend after prom and will feature food, games, entertainment and prizes.

The group is seeking support from local businesses and community members to be able to offer the prizes.

Economist: Administration’s effect on economic outlook uncertain

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Although the nation’s economy grew at an average rate in 2016 and is expected to continue that growth over the next few years, it’s hard to say how potential policy changes from the Trump administration on immigration and other issues could factor into economic projections, a Fed economist told local business leaders Thursday.

Senior economist and economic adviser William Strauss with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago spoke at the DeKalb County Economic Development Corp.’s annual Economic Outlook Luncheon at Faranda’s Banquet Center and said it’s too early to speculate on these policies.

“We all know this new administration is going to try and push a number of different policies, but for the Federal Reserve Bank to basically try to get a view of how the economy will materialize from them, it’d just be speculating on what gets enacted,” Strauss said. “It’s not until we get some of those legislative policies coming through before we get our pencils out.”

He added that people will be seeing true recovery in regard to economic activity.

Data on the first quarter of 2017 won’t be available until April, but Strauss said that by using the Chicago Fed National Activity Index, a monthly economic breakdown of data, economic activity is looking good and the economy is increasing above the average, or “trend,” rate.

Last year, Strauss said he anticipated a moderate growth in employment, a gradual rise in the inflation rate, a slow rise in vehicle sales and an increase in manufacturing.

All of these projections occurred, except for manufacturing growth.

“A large part of it had to do with the strength of the U.S. dollar,” Strauss said. “This caused international customers to find U.S. goods more expensive, which was enough to make a good growth rate shrink to zero. Goods became around 20 percent more expensive to international buyers.”

Illinois lost manufacturing jobs in 2016, while nearby Indiana and Michigan experienced growth, Strauss said.

Although overall employment opportunities have increased by more than 2.3 million, the growth in some

Midwestern states, including Illinois, has lagged behind the rest of the nation.

Illinois also experienced a higher unemployment rate than the nation as a whole in 2016.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers show that the U.S. ended 2016 with an unemployment rate of 4.7 percent, while data from the Illinois Department of Employment Security shows the state of Illinois ended the year at 5.6 percent.

“The fiscal problems the state is facing are really hampering some of that growth,” Strauss said.

However, this strong employment growth has not translated into higher wages for employees, he said.

“Slow productivity growth helps to explain this,” Strauss said. “Employers are not a charity. They will pay you whatever they can afford paying you and still get quality work out of you.”

Light vehicle sales set a record in 2016, beating the previous record from 2015 by 0.4 percent.

Strauss said that the auto industry still should have profitable, productive numbers in 2017, but he was concerned

that if numbers went much higher, it could lead to destructive competition between companies.

“I’m very optimistic as far as the outlook,” Strauss said. “The Midwest econ-

omy has been growing close to trend and a bit better than the national economy. The risk of recession is, at least in the next six months to a year, very reduced.”

Mayoral candidates talk visions for future

SYCAMORE – All three candidates vying to be Sycamore’s next mayor were stumped to name the most pressing issue facing the city but provided distinct answers on how they would ensure the long-term viability of the city’s downtown.

Candidates Rick Kramer, Dr. Curt Lang and Candy Smith were asked to explain why they should be elected and fielded questions from residents Thursday evening in the Regale Center at a forum hosted by the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce.

Kramer, a 4th Ward alderman, said he would ensure when buildings are remodeled that they still match the overall look and feel of downtown Sycamore.

“We can’t have something like a lot of neon lighting and stuff like that,” Kramer said. “We have to preserve that downtown district and keep it charming like it is, because I think

locally, so we keep our downtown businesses viable,” she said. “They help keep the property taxes down as well.”

Lang, a 1st Ward alderman, said the city Candy Smith should continue to improve its “curb appeal” by offering assistance through facade grants. He added that businesses should coordinate so their stores’ appearances do not clash. “[We should] have establishments communicate with one another to work together in the way their property is displayed,” Lang said.

Lang said he thinks the city is “on track to become a greater, bigger community,” and that as mayor he would want to be involved in managing its growth.

People spending too much money at video gaming establishments was another issue brought before the candidates.

Lang said gaming establishments are limited based on city code, but they should still be allowed.

“I worry about discretionary income being used for nonessential services; I personally am a conservative guy,” Lang said. “I will follow the code, but I don’t really have to endorse it.”

Kramer said he is concerned about people developing gambling addictions who may need to find help; however, video gaming has helped some businesses to stay afloat.

“It has bailed out some of the clubs, like our smaller clubs in town,” he said. “It has advantages and disadvantages.”

Smith said she would be in favor of limiting the number of establishments that open specifically for video gaming, but the city should not be telling adults how they can or cannot spend their money.

“I wouldn’t mind seeing those types of places capped, but we’re adults and we have to make decisions,” Smith said.

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore Police Department will host a series of seminars to educate people on topics including child internet safety, police use of force, IRS scams and trends in illegal drug use.

The six seminars are free and geared toward the law enforcement field. They will be at the Sycamore Police Department, 535 DeKalb Ave., from April through October.

Reservations are not required, but RSVPs are requested. Those interested in attending a seminar can call the department at 815-865-3435.

Sycamore police Cmdr. Steve Cook said hosting the seminars is a new initiative for the department in an effort to do more community outreach.

“It was something we were thinking about doing to give us a chance to show the public what we do,” he said.

Last year officers went door to door to speak with community members, and the seminars this year will give people a chance to meet police officers where they work, Cook said.

“What is my Child Doing Online?” will be the first seminar at 7 p.m.

April 11. This presentation will educate parents about the online/mobile

applications children are using, as well as the pressures and problems associated with each. It is intended for parents only, as mature themes will be covered.

“When Can the Police Use Force?” will be the next seminar at 7 p.m.

April 18. This presentation is designed to put the use of police force into context. The capabilities of special operations teams also will be discussed.

“How do the Police Collect Evidence?” will be at 7 p.m. May 4. This seminar will focus on crime scene processing, separating TV myth from reality and what happens to evidence after it is collected.

“Who and What are School Resource Officers?” will be at 7 p.m.

Aug. 1. Attendees can meet and speak with school resource officers and learn about their roles in schools.

CHICAGO – The last straw that convinced Chicago native Marissa Marshall it was time to move away was hearing dangerously close gunfire in the rough neighborhood where she found affordable housing.

The 29-year-old, who’s pregnant with her fifth child, relocated about three years ago to a St. Louis suburb where she more easily found jobs and a home where she felt it was safe to send the kids outside.

“I have boys and I didn’t want to raise them in that environment,” Marshall said. “It is easier to go outside of Chicago to get help than stay in Chicago.”

New census data released Thursday shows she’s not alone, with the Chicago area losing more residents than any other U.S. metropolitan area.

The continuing decline coincided with other Midwestern areas, including St. Louis and Cleveland, as the South and Southwest regions of the country saw gains.

Two Texas metropolitan areas – Dallas and Houston – reported the biggest numeric increases between July 2015 and July 2016, adding more than 100,000 residents each.

Cook County Circuit Judge Rodolfo Garcia ruled in favor of Illinois legislators on Thursday, citing a 2014 law passed after then-Gov. Pat Quinn withheld paychecks over pension reform.

Mendoza said she planned to comply with the order. She also said she would ask her lawyers to appeal the judge’s ruling.

Teacher fired for allegedly bullying student over Pledge

BLUE ISLAND – A suburban Chicago teacher has been fired for allegedly bullying a student into standing for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Eisenhower High School driver’s education teacher Vince Ziebarth said he was terminated March 16 after being told he made “inappropriate comments” to a sophomore student.

Ziebarth told the Daily Southtown that he told the student if he chooses to sit during the Pledge he will not sit in a driver’s education vehicle. Ziebarth said he wasn’t given a specific reason for his firing, adding he was not under contract, and was not a tenured teacher.

The student’s mother contends Ziebarth violated her son’s First Amend-

ment rights.

School officials have declined to comment on personnel issues involving Ziebarth.

Cop faces new charges in shooting of black teen

CHICAGO – A grand jury added 16 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm to the first-degree murder charges against a white Chicago police officer accused in the fatal shooting of a black 17-year-old.

A special prosecutor and attorneys for former officer Jason Van Dyke didn’t discuss the new indictment announced during at a Thursday hearing.

Van Dyke shot 17-year-old Laquan McDonald 16 times in October 2014.

The new indictment brings to 23 the number of felony counts against Van Dyke. He faces six counts of first-degree murder, one count of official misconduct and now 16 aggravated battery counts.

Van Dyke was charged in 2015 at the same time the city – on a judge’s orders – released video of the shooting.

Chiropractor faces charges tied to $10M in billings

CHICAGO – A Chicago chiropractor has been indicted on federal charges that he submitted at least $10 million in false claims to Medicare and private insurers.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release that Henry Posada allegedly submitted fraudulent claims for physical therapy and chiropractic services that never happened. He also used the names of patients without their knowledge to create false claim forms.

The 54-year-old Posada is charged with 18 counts of health care fraud. He pleaded not guilty this week.

Posada allegedly submitted false claims from 2008 and 2016, prompting Medicaid and private insurers to pay him and his South Side clinic more than $5 million.

Posada could not be reached for comment because his business phone number is disconnected and his residential number is unlisted.

WASHINGTON – Abandoning negotiations, President Donald Trump demanded a make-or-break vote on health care legislation in the House, threatening to leave “Obamacare” in place and move on to other issues if Friday’s vote fails.

The risky move, part gamble and part threat, was presented to GOP lawmakers behind closed doors Thursday night after a long and intense day that saw a planned vote on the health care bill scrapped as the legislation remained short of votes amid cascading negotiations among conservative lawmakers, moderates and others.

At the end of it the president had had enough and was ready to vote and move on, whatever the result, Trump’s budget director Mick Mulvaney told lawmakers. “’Negotiations are over, we’d like to vote tomorrow and let’s get this done for the American people.’ That was it,” Rep. Duncan Hunter of California said as he left the meeting, summarizing Mulvaney’s message to lawmakers.

“Let’s vote,” White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said as he walked out.

“For seven and a half years we have been promising the American people that we will repeal and replace this broken law because it’s collapsing and it’s failing families, and tomorrow we’re proceeding,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said, then walked off without answering as reporters demanded to know whether the bill had the votes to pass.

The outcome of Friday’s vote was impossible to predict. Both conservative and moderate lawmakers had claimed the bill lacked votes after a long day of talks. But the White House appeared ready to gamble that the

The measure also would block federal payments to Planned Parenthood for a year, another stumbling block for GOP moderates.

In a concession to the conservative House Freedom Caucus, many of whose members have withheld support, the legislation would repeal requirements for insurers to cover “essential health benefits” such as maternity care and substance abuse treatment.

The drama unfolded seven years to the day after Obama signed his landmark law, an anniversary GOP leaders meant to celebrate with a vote to undo the divisive legislation. “Obamacare” gave birth to the tea party movement and helped Republicans win and keep control of Congress and then take the White House.

Instead, as GOP leaders were forced to delay the vote Thursday, C-SPAN filled up the time playing footage of Obama signing the Affordable Care Act.

Lessons from Penn State

Had two former Penn State University officials done the right thing, some children might have been spared the ongoing pain of having been sexually abused.

Apparently, the university’s football program was more important to the two.

Former Penn State Vice President Gary Schultz, 67, and former athletic director Tim Curley, 62, pleaded guilty to misdemeanor child endangerment in court.

Each faces as many as five years in prison or, depending what a judge decides, they could get as little as probation.

Their cases are linked to that of former football coaching staff member Jerry Sandusky, who is serving a long prison term for molesting 10 boys. The full list of his victims is much longer.

Curley and Schultz’s cases are being resolved more than five years after the Sandusky scandal broke. One wonders why it took Pennsylvania authorities so long to resolve the matter.

While in their Penn State positions, the two men were among those who in 2001 received a complaint by a university graduate assistant. He said he witnessed Sandusky molesting a boy in a shower used by the team.

But the two – and, allegedly, former Penn State President Graham Spanier – swept the complaint under the carpet.

That allowed Sandusky to spend the next 10 years victimizing more children.

The legendary Joe Paterno, Penn State’s football coach for many years, lost his job over the scandal.

He died a few months after Sandusky was arrested.

Curley and Schultz failed to protect children under the requirements of the law, and that is why they face prison terms.

Educators work under similar mandates regarding abuse or neglect of children that comes to their attention.

Frequently, predators who go to prison in our states have educators who blew the whistle on them to thank.

It is a matter of priorities, we suppose. Either the welfare of children is your top priority – or it isn’t.

Those who think something else is more important belong behind bars.

The American Health Care Act would drastically reshape Medicaid – ending the federal government’s long-running, open-ended commitment to help states pay for care for the poor.

Instead, in 2020, Washington would make limited per-capita contributions that would shrink as a share of costs with every passing year.

True, expanded eligibility for Medicaid is an important part of President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. And the AHCA would reverse this expansion. But its much bigger change is to the Medicaid program as it existed long before Obamacare. Medicaid is a popular and relatively efficient insurance program that has provided health care and peace of mind for millions of Americans for more than half a century.

Why start taking it apart now?

Part of the rationale is that the changes to Medicaid would save $880 billion over 10 years, allowing Congress to make further tax cuts later this year. (Trump telegraphed the strategy in a speech to supporters Monday.) At the same time, many Republicans have long disliked the program’s open-ended promise of federal money.

Whatever the reason, it’s a step in the wrong direction. Those who lose Medicaid coverage would still need care, and their fellow Americans would still have to pick up the tab.

As things stand now with Medicaid, states pay doctors for providing care to enrollees, and the federal government reimburses the states up to 75 percent of that cost. When a state spends more than usual – in the event of a hurricane or an opioid epidemic, for example – the federal share keeps up.

Under the AHCA, each state would instead be given a capped allowance, and that amount would rise each year with medical inflation. It would not account for any unforeseen expenses. Over time, as the rise in per-patient costs outstripped the rise in general medical inflation – as

the Congressional Budget Office assumes they will – the federal share of funding would decline. Hundreds of billions in costs would be shifted from the federal government to the states. In response, states would need to either raise their own spending on Medicaid – or more likely, offer fewer services to fewer people.

It is this last possibility that is most disturbing. Medicaid has been required to cover some groups of people – mothers and children living in poverty, for example – but not all. One of the consequences of the AHCA would be to discontinue coverage to many who just recently gained coverage under the expansion funded by Obamacare. If a state took the option, now included in the AHCA, to accept a Medicaid block grant rather than a per-capita allotment, it could set its own eligibility standards.

Sending large groups of people back to the private insurance market in a post-Obamacare world, with its increasingly unaffordable premiums and increasingly expensive outof-pocket costs, would be not only inefficient but also unjust.

This may seem like an odd way to begin a column about those of you who voted for Donald Trump, but I have my reasons. If you know these small things about my life, maybe you’ll hang with me here a little longer.

For months now, I’ve been hearing and reading about how those of us who didn’t support Trump need to understand those of you who did. We must listen to you, the argument goes. We must understand your anger.

I’m reaching my saturation point with this one-sided conversation, because it is always framed as a threat.

Figure out why so many of my fellow Americans supported Trump, or lose more elections. This is an argument for political ambition, not reconciliation.

I don’t want to mock or ridicule you, but I also don’t want to pretend that my objections are irrelevant.

Many of you Trump supporters regularly write to ask why I won’t give him a chance. I want to know how you can continue to tolerate a man so needy that, even as president, he requires campaign rallies full of cheering throngs to keep his ego afloat.

If being president doesn’t fulfill his need to feel important, what will?

Doesn’t the answer to that scare you?

I don’t want to coddle you, in the thin hope that this will coax out your regret for electing the most dangerous man to ever inhabit the White House.

This would do nothing to mitigate the harm Trump is daily inflicting on this country.

Even The Wall Street Journal’s ultra-conservative editorial board has had its fill of Trump’s malignant behavior. Consider their response to Trump’s persistent lie that President Barack Obama wiretapped his phones: “(T)he President clings to his assertion like a drunk to an empty gin bottle.”

That’s the image of our president, projected to the world.

His approval rating here in this country continues to plummet. A new Gallup poll shows that only 37 percent still support him – a new low even for

Trump. Fifty-eight percent of Americans disapprove of the job he is doing.

This, during what is normally the honeymoon period for new presidents.

I don’t celebrate those numbers, but I won’t apologize for them either.

I’ve reached a point where I think it’s time for you to try to understand people like me, who are doing everything we can to limit the harm of this dangerous man.

Like you, I love my family and my friends.

Like you, I love my country, too.

We have this in common, you and I, no matter who is president. I’m trying always to remember that.

Every morning, I walk to that window in my kitchen. I look at those little framed photos, and I study Chéthan’s swan. For just a moment, I stand in the eye of the hurricane, and I am calm.

It’s enough.

Health care should be a right provided to all our citizens, not just those who can afford it. We have police, fire and the protection of our armed services. We also need health care protection. What will be targeted next? Medicare? Social Security?

I did call the offices of both Hultgren and Kinzinger. According to their representatives, they have not yet taken a position on the new health care plan, nor are there any current plans to meet with their constituents.

Let our representatives know that we expect representation! Let them know we will be voting in less than two years and will hold them accountable.

They deserve the opportunity to continue their work.

Call representatives as nation faces health care crisis

To the Editor: In the past year, I have become a recipient of the benefits that Medicare provides to those of us who have reached the age of 65.

I must say that Medicare not only provides excellent medical coverage, it also provides a peace of mind knowing I am well covered.

In observing the actions of our Congress in their attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act, it is apparent that they are leaving millions of Americans without coverage and millions more with much higher premiums.

Is this the direction we want to move our national health care? Is this also the direction that they might take Medicare?

I would like to know where our local representatives to Congress, Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, and Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, stand on this issue.

Loss of Medicaid funding at the federal level will seriously affect our state of Illinois. This will also greatly affect children and their access to health care.

Seniors universally support Medicare. Congress has a great health care program for its members. People do not mind paying taxes if it goes to a program they support.

Everyone needs health care! We should be looking at Medicare for all.

It works for our senior population, and it could work for us all.

Government should be involved in health care. I want a health care program in which doctors, nurses, CNAs and all health care workers are well paid, not corporate stockholders profiting more when services are denied!

The windowsill over my kitchen sink is an altar of sorts, full of small framed photos of our grandchildren and other mementos to keep me grateful.

The square ceramic tile leaning against the window started out with the painted names of our immediate family. It has since flowered to include the names of additional loved ones etched in various colors of Sharpie.

The red Matchbox car was a gift from my son, who stuck it in my Christmas stocking in my early single-mother days as a promise that one day I, too, would drive a car in my favorite color. He was right, and I do.

A recent addition is a white, palmsized origami swan. After a speech I gave in December, 12-year-old Chéthan Chandra walked up to me and, with the gentlest of smiles, held out a little black box with a silver bow.

“I made this for you,” he said.

Chéthan is a triplet, and I’ve known his family for years, but that moment – that gift – moved me in a way I didn’t see coming. Like much of post-election America, I was feeling the weight of what loomed ahead, but staring at that delicate swan in my palm, and then looking into the face of that beautiful boy, I was transported. I stood in the

DAWC hosts series of talks on health issues DAILY CHRONICLE

A series of talks on health issues titled “Women’s Journey Through Conventional, Complementary and Alternative Health Care” is being organized by the DeKalb Area Women’s Center.

The series begins Friday and continues through June 16.

The first presentation on March 24 will be on eating disorders. The speakers are Erin Carney who is a graduate dietetic student and intern at Northern Illinois University and a speaker on Overeaters Anonymous.

She will focus on the different types of eating disorders including what

contributes to these behaviors and how to recognize the signs of eating problems. She will provide information on resources that are available in the community. She also will cover the importance of frequent self-care and how to challenge the diet mentality and idolized body ideals we receive from media.

Her presentation will be followed by a speaker who will describe how people can overcome eating disorders along with other health problems and live at a healthy weight through the 12-step program of Overeaters Anonymous.

Troop 16 completes Orienteering merit badge Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 16, chartered by Federated Church in Sycamore, completed the Orienteering merit badge at Shabbona Forest Preserve on a weekend campout this winter.

The Scouts learned how to use a map and compass and how to plan a journey or find specific locations. They also set up an orienteering course and had to successfully navigate it. Four new Scouts who recently crossed over to Troop 16 also completed all requirements to earn their Scout rank, the first rank of seven achieved as a Boy Scout on their trail to Eagle. Sycamore’s Paul Ruetten earns Eagle rank in Boy Scouts DAILY CHRONICLE Paul Ruetten, a member of Troop 16 chartered at Federated Church in Sycamore, recently was awarded the Eagle rank, the highest award achievable in Boy Scouts.

He is the son of Drs. Tim and Cathy Ruetten of Sycamore.

Ruetten began his scouting journey in first grade in Cub Scout Pack 140. He earned all five Cub Scout ranks and the Arrow of Light. He continued his trail

to Eagle with Boy Scout Troop 16 serving as patrol leader, troop quartermaster and assistant senior patrol leader. He was active in numerous campouts, troop activities and service projects. Paul He attended Tomahawk Ruetten Scout Reservation and Tesomas Scout Camp and he enjoyed two High Adventure experiences including the Boundary Waters and

Philmont Scout Ranch in 2016. Ruetten was inducted into the Order of the Arrow in 2015 and he earned 26 merit badges.

A student for 11 years at St. Mary’s School in Sycamore, Ruetten wanted his Eagle project to help the school. He built an 8-by-10-foot storage shed at the school to store playground equipment.

Ruetten held his formal ceremony and was awarded the Eagle rank along with his twin brother and four other Scouts who also achieved the rank this

past fall at Federated Church in Sycamore.

Ruetten is a freshman at Sycamore High School and a member of the SHS cross country and track team, the DeKalb-Sycamore High School Co-Op Swim Team and the DeKalb County Swim Team. He will continue to be active in Troop 16 and plans to attend college with a goal of becoming a surgeon. He also hopes to compete in an Ironman Triathlon before he graduates college.

Wheeler’s triple to lead off 5th provides spark

DeKALB – Through four innings, a single in the third inning was the only hit for the DeKalb baseball team.

Then the Barbs’ bats woke up.

They scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to steal a 6-4 victory over Belvidere on a cold and windy Thursday afternoon at Dave Pettengell Field.

“We started swinging at some pitches we could hit,” DeKalb coach Dedric Wright said. “We had a lot of guys out in front today and were taking fastballs down the middle, but we just got set and started hitting the ball the other way. ... It was a matter of approach change.”

The Barbs (3-3) were trailing 4-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, but DeKalb junior first baseman Bryce Wheeler smacked a leadoff triple and scored on a bloop single by Alvaro Munos.

In their four-run sixth, the Barbs got some help from the Bucs’ defense. DeKalb’s No. 7 hitter, Noah Valin, reached after the Belvidere left fielder dropped a routine fly ball, and then Eric Nelson followed with an RBI double to cut the lead to one. After Jake Perkins reached on a bunt single and Matt Searls was hit by a pitch, Nelson scored on a passed ball to tie it. The Barbs took the lead on an RBI groundout by Munos, and then Searls padded their lead by successfully stealing home.

“He wasn’t actually supposed to go until the next pitch,” Wright said. “He’s probably one of the fastest guys in the county, so I felt comfortable with him stealing home in any situation.”

Perkins, a senior, earned the victory, pitching three innings of relief – allowing two hits and one run while striking out six, including fanning the side in the seventh – be-

fore grabbing his things and sprinting to the Mr. DHS show after his game-ending strikeout.

“It’s been one of those things where we’ve been down early and had to fight back, so I don’t know if it had to do with the other events,” Wright said.

“As a team, all 21 of us have to come out and be mentally prepared from the start instead of having to fight back.”

Each team committed four errors, with the Bucs scoring their first two runs after allowing the leadoff runner of the inning to reach on a miscue.

“It’s a combination of two things: it’s early (in the) season, and not being mentally prepared and focused,” Wright said.

went 2 for 3 with a triple and a run, and Nelson was hit by a pitch twice to go along with an RBI double. For Belvidere, starting pitcher Austin Revolinski took the loss in five-plus innings, but was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Anthony Cotichhio was 2 for 3 with a two-run single in the top of the third.

Beyond the stats: Nelson, who started on the mound for DeKalb, worked his way out of a jam in the second inning.

After allowing a leadoff double to start the frame, Nelson responded by striking out the next three Belvidere batters.

They said it: “We’ve had a lot of games lately, so the next two days we’re going to have practice and get back to fundamentals,” Wright said.

ecarifio@shawmedia.com WATERMAN – Indian Creek girls soccer coach Scott McClure wanted the Timberwolves to be aggressive with the wind at their backs in the first half of their game Thursday against Hinckley-Big Rock.

Marisa VanWyhe was more than happy to follow that game plan.

VanWyhe fired in a shot from about 25 yards out in the first half, the only one of 13 first-half shots to slip past Royals goalkeeper Tanner Prellberg in a 1-0 win.

“Coach told me before the game to just rip shots,” VanWyhe said. “I was right outside the box and just did what I was told. I saw my opportunity, and did what I was told. I hit it right out and watched it sail right in.”

McClure said the strategy was to keep the Royals (0-1-1, 0-1 Little 10 Conference) on defense, something they did in the first half by dominating possession.

“We were playing with the wind that half, and I encouraged them to take some shots from outside, challenge the goalie and crash the net,” McClure said.

The Timberwolves (2-2, 1-0) kept the Royals from doing much on offense by controlling the ball in the first half. In the second half, the game was played mostly in the middle of the field, but the Royals had a couple looks from Sam Noble in the final 15 minutes, but Skyler Kaelin turned them both away.

“Tanner had 13 saves in the first half, so she was working her butt off,” Hinckley-Big Rock coach Kristen Kubala said. “We just weren’t able to push up as much we needed to in the second half, and that made the difference. We didn’t have the offensive support we needed. But they all played with heart and did a good job.”

By the numbers: Prellberg finished with 16 saves in the loss.

Beyond the stats: Play was stopped three times in the first half because of injury timeouts. In the second half, when a light rain started falling, there were no injury stoppages.

They said it: “They’re our rivals, the town next door, basically,” McClure said. “Anytime we get a win against H-BR, this is a quality team. We were very glad to get this win.”

Up next: The Timberwolves host Princeton at 11 a.m. Saturday, while the Royals head to Plano at 4:30 p.m.

AT NEW YORK No. 7 seed South Carolina (24-10) vs. No. 3 seed Baylor (27-7) 6:29 p.m. Friday, TBS Bottom line: This is all new for the Gamecocks. They are in the Sweet 16 for the first time since the field expanded to 64, having beaten Duke in the second-round at Greenville, South Carolina, along the way. Before their first-round victory against Marquette, the Gamecocks hadn’t won an NCAA tournament game since 1973. They hadn’t even been in the tournament since 2004. Baylor is back in the Sweet 16 after first-round exits the past two years. This is the Bears’ fourth Sweet 16 under coach Scott Drew, but they haven’t been to a Final Four since 1950.

The show: South Carolina’s Sindarius Thornwell is the Southeastern Conference player of the year – despite a six-game suspension early in the season – and he has lived up to his star billing in the NCAA tournament. The senior had 29 points and 11 rebounds against Marquette and 24 and seven vs. Duke. Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski called him “the best, unheralded, great player in the United States.”

No. 1: Baylor had a short stint in January as the No. 1 team in the AP college basketball poll, a first in program history. The Bears went 4-5 in February. Otherwise, it was another successful year for Drew’s program. Baylor is one of 13 teams to reach the Sweet 16 at least four times since 2010.

Familiarity: Gamecocks coach Frank Martin left Kansas State to take over in Columbia, South Carolina, in 2012. Martin went 4-4 against Drew and Baylor while he was in coaching in the Big 12. The teams have met twice since Martin came to South Carolina and Baylor won twice, the last time in 2014. Martin said familiarity with Baylor’s matchup zone helps some but more so the Gamecocks benefit from having played zone teams Syracuse and Michigan. South Carolina won both games.

Motley’s crew: Johnathan Motley is Baylor’s best player. An All-Big 12 pick and potential All-American, Motley averages 17.3 points and 9.9 rebounds a game.

No. 8 seed Wisconsin (27-9) vs. No. 4 seed Florida (26-8) 9 p.m. Friday, TBS Bottom line: The Badgers are back in the Sweet 16 for the fourth straight season after upsetting defending champion Villanova in the second round. Wisconsin lost five of six late in the regular season, but seniors Nigel Hayes and Bronson Koenig have sparked another successful March. Florida is back in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2014. The Gators missed the NCAAs altogether the past two seasons, but second-year coach Mike White has them rolling again. Florida was one of the most dominant teams in the first two rounds of the tournament, beating East Tennessee by 15 and Virginia by 26.

Veteran leadership: Hayes and Koenig rank Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, among active players in career points scored in the NCAA tournament heading into the Sweet 16. Hayes has 166 points and Koenig has 159. The 6-foot-8 Hayes is one of two players in Big Ten history with at least 1,800 career points, 700 rebounds and 300 assists. The other is former Michigan State star Steve Smith. Koenig is one of the best clutch shooters in the country.

He is 36 for 71 from 3-point range over the past two seasons in the final 5 minutes and overtime.

Slump: Florida’s KeVaughn Allen, who averaged nearly 14 points coming into the tournament, has 11 total points in two NCAA games and is 1 for 13 from 3-point range.

Depth and getting offense from different spots has been one of the Gators’ strengths. Eight different players have had at least one game in which they have led the team in scoring.

Second-year standards: White, who took over when Billy Donovan left for the NBA, has set a program record for victories in his first two seasons as Gators head coach with 46.

Wisconsin coach Greg Gard is the third coach in the past 20 years to lead a team to the Sweet 16 each of his first two seasons, joining Gonzaga’s Mark Few and UCLA’s Steve Lavin.

Dorsey, the man the Ducks call “Mr. March,” had his sixth straight game scoring 20 or more points.

The Wolverines (27-11) had one more chance to extend their run after Dylan Ennis missed a free throw with 15 seconds left. But Derrick Walton, who had carried the Wolverines the past three weeks, was off with his long WEST REGIONAL jumper just before the buzzer.

No. 2 seed Kentucky (31-5) 8:40 p.m. Friday, CBS Bottom line: UCLA has the most national titles, while Kentucky has the most wins all-time – making for lots of history in this showdown.

Kentucky coach John Calipari has had much more success in the NCAA tournament than Steve Alford. Calipari led Kentucky to a national title in 2012, but Alford has UCLA in the Sweet 16 for the third time in his four seasons with the Bruins. The matchup promises to be entertaining: UCLA is the nation’s top scoring team, while Kentucky has won 13 straight.

Boos or cheers: Calipari has a winning history at the FedExForum from his tenure coaching the Memphis Tigers. But many of his old fans remain bitter over the coach bolting for Kentucky in 2009, so the Wildcats might need a big turnout from Big Blue Nation to drown out some boos.

Fab freshmen: Kentucky has its trio of starting freshmen in Malik Monk, De’Aaron Fox and Bam Adebayo. UCLA counters with its young phenom, guard Lonzo Ball, along with fellow freshman TJ Leaf.

Did you know? UCLA beat the then-No. 1 ranked Wildcats, 97-92, in the Bruins’ first trip to Rupp Arena on Dec. 3, and they now have won two straight in this series. A third straight win would allow UCLA to tie Kentucky at 7-7 all-time.

Jose, California, Jordan Mathews hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with less than a minute to play, and top-seeded Gonzaga survived a rough shooting night for both teams to beat No. 4 seed West Virginia to advance to the West Regional final.

On a night that featured 51 fouls and only 34 made baskets, Mathews delivered the big shot that sent the Bulldogs (35-1) to their third Elite Eight in school history.

It didn’t come easily. West Virginia (29-8) had three shots to tie the game but Tarik Phillip missed a shot from the lane and Jevon Carter missed two 3-pointers after Silas Melson made one foul shot. The Mountaineers rebounded both misses but couldn’t get another shot off before the buzzer.

The Bulldogs also beat defending national champ Villanova not once, but twice this season. They have not trailed in beating a pair of double-digit seeds in Winthrop and Middle Tennessee. The last time North Carolina came into Memphis as the South’s No. 1 seed, the Tar Heels won the 2009 national championship. The Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season champs routed Texas Southern and rallied from five down in the final 2:57 to beat Arkansas and reach this stage.

Holtmann vs. Williams: Butler has won the past two games between these teams, and Bulldogs coach Chris Holtmann is 1-1 himself with a win in 2014 at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

Coach Roy Williams is 7-1 in the Sweet 16 with North Carolina.

Keep an eye on: Butler’s Andre Woodson and North Carolina’s Justin Jackson. Woodson played his past two seasons at Memphis before graduating and transferring to Butler. He is 8 of 14 beyond the arc in the tournament and returning to an arena where he averaged 38 percent from 3-point range. Jackson, the ACC player of the year, is averaging 18.1 points a game and has hit a school-record 98 3s this season.

Did you know? Williams has made the NCAA tournament in 27 of his 29 years as a head coach, and this is his 18th berth in the Sweet 16, where the coach is 12-5 overall.

mpotash@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Fifty years ago this week, Chicago held a parade for the Blackhawks, which featured Bobby Hall and Stan Mikita at City Hall and toasted them at the Bismarck Hotel in celebration of winning a “championship” that would be considered mundane today – the Prince of Wales Trophy for having the best record in the six-team NHL’s regular season in 196667.

There will be no parades or luncheons or speeches if the Hawks accomplish a similar feat this season, but that’s still the goal.

The Hawks (100 points) were trailing the Capitals (102 points) and Penguins (101) and were tied with the Blue Jackets heading into Thursday night’s game against the Stars. Being assured of homeice advantage in every playoff series is a worthy reward.

“First overall would be nice,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “We would like to keep moving ahead. I look at that race [in the Metro Division] with four teams a couple

Although the Hawks went into the game with a relatively comfortable six-point lead for the best record in the Western Conference, they will probably have little margin for error if they intend to win the President’s Trophy. That means beating struggling

teams such as the Stars, who are sixth in the Central Division.

Patrick Kane scored in the first period and Marian Hossa scored a tie-breaking goal in the third period and the Hawks beat the Stars, 3-2, in a shootout, extending their Central Division lead to eight points over the Wild, who lost to the Flyers 3-1 at home.

The Hawks were hardly rattled after a 5-4 overtime loss to the Canucks on Tuesday night. Quenneville was pleased that they allowed just 15 shots on goal. But the Hawks weren’t as sharp defensively against the Stars. They were outshot 13-7 in the first period and 14-7 in the second for a 27-14 deficit after two.

(At the same point against the Canucks, they had a 21-9 advantage in shots on goal).

But Corey Crawford, who allowed three goals on the first five shots against the Canucks, was much better against the Stars. He stopped 26-of-27 shots through two periods and had 42 saves.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead when Kane scored his 33rd goal of the season off a pass from Richard Panik on a power play at 8:13 of the first period. Jonathan Toews also assisted on the goal. It came seconds after the Stars failed on a two-on-one short-handed opportunity.

With Ryan Hartman in the penalty box for tripping in the second period, Crawford came up big on the penalty kill, stopping Jiri Hudler’s backhand on the doorstep.

After both teams hit a lull midway through the second period, Hartman got the crowd into it when he got into a fight with veteran defenseman Dan Hamhuis near center ice.

Hartman actually got the better of Hamhuis, but it ultimately did not work out well for the Hawks. Ales Hemsky beat Crawford in front to tie the game 1-1 just 40 seconds after the fight.

Hawks might’ve struck gold with Hartman at center

mpotash@suntimes.com CHICAGO – It remains to be seen whether Joel Quenneville has struck gold with winger Ryan Hartman centering the No. 2 line with Artemi Panarin and Patrick Kane – Panarin and Kane are going to make almost anyone look good. But the Blackhawks coach was intrigued enough to stick with it against the Dallas Stars on Thursday night, with an eye on keeping Hartman at center on a bottom-six line when Artem Anisimov returns from a leg injury.

Hartman – a forward on the third line with Marcus Kruger and Marian Hossa to start Tuesday night’s game agianst the Canucks – skated with Panarin and Kane in the third period, and Hartman scored the tying goal with 1:03 left before the Hawks lost in overtime. Physically, the gritty Hartman

is a better complement to Panarin and Kane than rookie Nick Schmaltz, who initially replaced Anisimov on the second line.

“I liked [Hartman] there and the way he plays with those two guys – you can have a net presence and disruption around the net and a lot of action with those guys in that area,” Quenneville said. “It gives us some options of using him in the middle in other Ryan Hartman spots, as well. For [one] period there, I thought he did a real nice job. He looked all right in practice [before Thursday night’s game]. It’s one more option, which we like.”

When Anisimov returns, the Hawks could have Jonathan Toews, Anisimov, Hartman and Marcus Kruger at center – theoretically giving Quenneville the strength down the middle he’s looking

for in the playoffs. But Hartman still has to prove he can be universally effective at center. And John Hayden or Schmaltz have to continue to produce to free up Hartman to play center.

Hartman was unfazed by the challenge of transitioning to center; he played some center at Rockford and “a decent amount” in juniors.

“I don’t think it’s too difficult,” he said. “It is a different position, but the only main difference is defensive zone – you’re just playing a little lower and you’re reading off our defenseman. It’s not a brand-new thing for me. I’m looking forward to it.”

Hawks extend Kero: The Hawks have agreed to terms with rookie forward Tanner Kero on a two-year contract through the 2018-19 season, the team announced.

Kero, signed as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan Tech in 2015, has five goals and 12 points with a plus-12

differential in 38 games before Thursday night’s game against the Stars. He had one goal and three points, with a minus-2 differential in 17 games last season.

Sharp’s struggle: Former Hawks star Patrick Sharp is having the most challenging season of his NHL career – he’s missed 26 games for two concussions and has been playing through a hip injury that will require surgery in the offseason.

The 35-year-old Sharp, who won three Stanley Cups in 10 seasons with the Hawks (2006 to ’15), has eight goals and 18 points, with a minus-21 differential in 46 games this season. And with the Stars (29-33-10) in sixth place in the Central Division, Sharp will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

“It’s been a tough season, that’s for sure,” Sharp said. “[Missing the playoffs will] be an opportunity for me to get healthy, I guess. It’ll be tough watching the playoffs, but that’s the

Time was really good; effort was really low. I threw some good change-ups, and the curveball’s spin is back to where it was last year. That’s a good sign.”

DUENSING BACK Veteran left-hand Brian Duensing, who had been sidelined two weeks since leaving a game with back stiffness, returned to pitch an inning in relief of Arrieta, looking healthy. He gave up a single and a sacrifice fly, then got a weak-hit ball to the mound and a foul pop. If he stays healthy, that’s likely the key to the Cubs keeping a 13-man pitching staff.

SPRING CLEANING The Cubs sent seven more players out of camp Thursday, trimming the spring roster to 36. That included third baseman Jeimer Candelario, ranked seventh among Cubs prospects by Baseball America. Candelario and right-handers Alec Mills and Jake Buchanan were optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Nonroster pitchers Dylan Floro, Williams Perez and David Rollins were reassigned to minor league camp. Right-hander Jim Henderson was released.

MESA, Ariz. – Cubs manager Joe Maddon unveiled his full rotation for the start of the season, and he might be making more history by the time the Cubs get through one turn.

After left-hander Jon Lester and right-hander Jake Arrieta start the first two games in St. Louis, Maddon has right-hander John Lackey in the third game in St. Louis, lefty Brett Anderson starting the series opener in Milwaukee after that, and righthander Kyle Hendricks starting the Cubs’ fifth game.

Yes, you read that right: The major league ERA leader last year is opening as the Cubs’ fifth starter this year.

Part of that is about splitting up the two lefties, Maddon said. It might also be a sign of the extreme quality of what Arrieta suggested might be the best rotation in the game.

It at least looks historic.

A quick glance through major league pitching history suggests Hendricks might be the first league ERA leader to open the next season as his team’s fifth starter.

Oakland’s Steve Ontiveros led the American League in ERA in 1994 and started the Athletics’ fourth game in ’95. The Giants’ Scott Garrelts led the NL in ’89 and opened as the Giants’ fourth starter the next year.

The Braves’ Buzz Capra led both leagues in 1974 and started the Braves’ fourth game the next year (but he also pitched the final inning of the opener in relief).

That far back, true five-man rotations were not common.

“Everybody’s always concerned about picking the order regarding what you perceive to be best to leastbest,” said Maddon, who explained that he wanted Lackey, the ex-Cardinal, pitching in more of a comfort zone in St. Louis and after that wanted to break up his lefties.

“Listen, Kyle could be a lot of people’s No. 2s, or even a 1 in a certain situation right now, too,” Maddon added. “He’s definitely better than a No. 5 starter. It just happens that we’re going to slot him in the 5 hole coming out of camp. But it’s not a pecking order regarding ability by any means.”

The easygoing Hendricks expressed no problem with the decision.

“Obviously, Kyle could be a 1 or 2 just about anywhere – not that he’s not here,” Arrieta said. “It’s just that we’ve got several of those, which is a good problem to have.”

Problem as in the best five-deep rotation in baseball, even?

“On paper, and what we’ve actually done on the field, it’s tough not to say that,” said Arrieta, who was part

of a 2016 rotation that had the majors’ best ERA. “People can rank them. But time will tell. Once we get out there, the first four or five times through the rotation, I think you could probably put a stamp on it then, a little bit more than now. But we stack up just as well as anybody out there.”

The rotation decisions also mean that, as expected, Anderson officially gets the last available rotation job over the more versatile lefty Mike Montgomery.

“We had a nice conversation with Montgomery. He totally understood, and he’s got a great attitude about all of this,” Maddon said. “I could see him starting, pitching in long relief, short relief. He could do a variety of different things for us. It’s nice when you have guys that can do that and then are willing to do that.”

Starting in Triple A ‘difficult,’ but Moncada accepts team’s decision

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Expectations are high when you cost the team that signed you (Red Sox) more than $60 million, and the $31.5 million you got made you the highest-paid prospect ever.

And when you’re ranked as the No. 2 prospect in baseball by Baseball America and MLBpipeline.com.

For Yoan Moncada, there also is the issue of having been traded for Chris Sale, a five-time All-Star entering his prime and considered one the best pitchers in baseball. It all flows into one wide Yoan Moncada river of expectations, which can be a lot for a 21-year-old.

But Moncada lets it all slide off his broad shoulders.

“I don’t really feel the pressure because of those situations,” Moncada said Thursday through White Sox translator Billy Russo. “I feel good, relaxed and I’m just trying to enjoy this team.”

Moncada said his goal is “to be working hard and to keep enjoying the game and enjoy this opportunity.”

For now, that will be at the Sox’s Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the muscular, switch-hitting five-tool prospect who reminded scouts of Mike Trout and has drawn comparisons to Robinson Cano, will open the season after finishing strong in Arizona. He batted .317 with three homers, one triple, four doubles and a team-high 13 RBIs during spring training Cactus League games. In Moncada’s past seven games, he went 10 for 22 with those four doubles and three home runs.

“That was the result of my routine and my work,’ ” the second baseman said. “I was also feeling more comfortable at home plate with my swing with my rhythm. That was the reason I had better results at the end.”

The late run began after he struck out four consecutive times in a Sunday night game against the Dodgers.

He doubled off the left-field wall, an opposite-field poke, his fifth time up.

“I was asked by a reporter if we were concerned if he’d struck out four times,” general manager Rick Hahn

Q STIFLES REDS Jose Quintana looks more than ready for Opening Day. The Reds didn’t bring their A team to Camelback Ranch on Thursday, but the White Sox’s ace left-hander commanded the strike zone over seven scoreless innings of two-hit ball, retiring the first 17 batters he faced, walking none and striking out three.

“I attacked the zone early,” Quintana said.

“When you’re ahead every batter, it’s good. I was getting some quick outs early.”

Quintana threw 79 pitches, 53 for strikes, and threw more in the bullpen to get his pitch count around 90, and likely will scale back in his final outing on the back fields next week.

Manager Rick Renteria still won’t say that Quintana, the obvious choice, will start against the Tigers on Opening Day (April 3) at Guaranteed Rate Field, but it’s certain unless he is traded.

Moncada looked relaxed and smiled politely while talking about going to Charlotte. He made five errors this spring, some on routine ground balls, and has worked with coach Joe McEwing on widening his base and improving his footwork in the infield. So there’s that to work on at Charlotte.

He also has 207 plate appearances at Double A and 284 at high Class A with the Red Sox last season, under his belt, which isn’t much. There quite possibly is more to be gained at the Triple-A level. And waiting till May to call him up saves the Sox a year of service time.

The Red Sox were so high on his talent they paid a 100 percent luxury tax on his signing bonus. Moncada believes, as most top prospects do, that he is ready now. But he seems to understand all that is involved.

“It was kind of difficult for me, but it wasn’t my decision to make,” Moncada said. “It was their decision, and for me to accept it.”

Because you’re presumably healthy, you’re unlikely to have any deficiency in the production of glutathione. If you’re interested in improving your body’s ability to recover from exercise by enhancing your muscles’ ability to heal, that’s a different question. People who exercise vigorously create oxidative free radicals, which can lead to muscle fatigue and decrease muscle performance – suggesting that an antioxidant may be helpful.

However, people who exercise regularly naturally produce more antioxidants in the muscles to prevent damage, possibly in response to the regular formation of oxidative free radicals. Regardless, the body takes care of itself without the need of a supplement.

As of yet, there is no good study of the use of glutathione in healthy people. Some nutritionists recommend increasing the intake of the amino acids cysteine and glutamate, which make glutathione, but this hasn’t been studied, either.

At this point, I would not recommend taking glutathione. If you’re healthy, your body should produce an adequate amount of this important antioxidant.

Dear Doctor: I’ve been seeing advertisements for glutathione, saying the supplement enhances the body’s cells. The ads also say the claims haven’t been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. What can you tell me about it?

Dear Reader: Glutathione is an antioxidant produced in the body through enzymatic reactions, using the amino acids cysteine, L-glutamic acid and glycine. It helps repair cells damaged by pollution, stress and other harmful influences, and it is undeniably important.

Mice unable to form glutathione will die before birth. Mice that have been genetically altered to not produce glutathione in the liver will die after one month. People with mutations in the enzymes that form glutathione are more susceptible to oxidative stress. The deficiency in the production of glutathione leads to the breakdown of red blood cells, enlargement of the spleen, gall stones, and after many years can lead to mental deterioration. Also, these patients are more prone to severe anemia when exposed to certain chemicals or drugs.

Less is known about glutathione’s use as a general supplement, although it has been evaluated by the FDA for AIDS-related weight loss. People with AIDS have reduced production of glutathione in the intestine, and supplementation with glutathione could help in the ability to digest food.

Glutathione also has been studied in cystic fibrosis patients. Decreased glutathione in their intestines can lead to inflammation of the intestine, pain, decreased absorption of food, weight loss and growth failure.

A 2015 study published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition found supplementation with glutathione three times a day with meals has been shown to decrease intestinal inflammation and improve growth in children with cystic

In today’s deal, North-South reach an imperfect contract, but it can still be made. What is the ideal contract, and how should South play in four hearts after West begins with three rounds of spades?

If South had been allowed to see his partner’s hand, he would have passed out three no-trump (or North, if given X-ray vision, would have raised straight to three no-trump).

That contract would have cruised home with an overtrick.

When East played high-low at the first two tricks, West was happy to continue with a third round, knowing that his partner must have the queen.

(He would not have signaled a doubleton when he had no trumps.)

Declarer did not wonder why West had failed to shift to a club, its being so rarely right to lead a suit when dummy is void in it. If he had, he might have deduced the bad trump break.

South ruffed the third spade on the board and played a heart. When East discarded, declarer had to concede down one, losing two spades, one heart and one club.

After South finished grumbling about the 5-0 break, North pointed out the inference from the third round of spades, then pointed out that by discarding a club from the dummy at trick three, declarer could have almost assured his contract.

Whatever East did -- win with the queen or ruff -- South could have taken the fourth trick, drawn trumps and claimed.

A loser-on-loser play is one of the most difficult to spot.
