Did you go to elementary school in an air-conditioned building?

Barry Schrader Sarah Moses doesn’t look like a political activist. But seeing her in action at meetings of the newly formed Action Steps for America of DeKalb and Sycamore shows her intense focus on making a difference at the grassroots level.

“My interest in getting involved was sparked by the (recent presidential) election and my concerns about the direction the administration was taking us in,” she said.

Moses probably has activism in her genes, whether she realized it or not until now. Her parents were at the University of Illinois when they joined the Peace Corps and served in India.

Sarah graduated from DeKalb High School and went to Northern Illinois University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology and a master’s in physical education and health education, now using that to operate a personal fitness training business of her own.

She and a few others gathered more than two months ago to talk about what they could do in the 16th Congressional District to learn more about the operations of Congress and how legislation affects people in this district.

“We tried to meet with Congressman Adam Kinzinger but to no avail,” Moses said.

“He has not held town meetings since the election, and only his staff was reachable.”

She said for now their main goal is educating people on what is happening in Congress.

“We want to share our views with our representatives,” she said. “We have dug into local issues to see how our rural communities are affected by the policies that are being voted on in Washington.”

Each Saturday morning for the past eight weeks the group has been holding meetings, most recently at 10 a.m. in the lower level of the First Congregational Church, 615 N. First St. in DeKalb.

Group members say attendance has ranged from 50 to 100 people at each session. People are invited to speak out, and many have expressed concerns about issues ranging from education, needs of the elderly, disabled, children, mental health and the Affordable Care Act replacement, among others.

Moses said they will continue to try and meet with Kinzinger and other elected representatives. They plan to take part in a protest rally Thursday outside the Chicago Club in the South Loop, where Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan is holding a fundraiser with many leading Republicans from around the state in attendance. Moses said there could be tens of thousands taking part in the protest.

They, along with several other grass-roots political groups that have sprung up since the election, are using a document titled “Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda,” which was produced by some former congressional staffers to help raise political awareness and calls for action among people in all parts of the country.

DeKalb County Jail expansion project in line for 2018 completion

SYCAMORE – Progress is coming along in line with the target date and budget for the expansion of the DeKalb County Jail, where new jail cells, isolation rooms and other needed spaces are beginning to take shape.

The jail’s increased capacity starting in 2018 will remedy a decades-old overcrowding problem.

Substantial completion on the $35 million project to expand the jail is expected in January 2018. Construction began in June.

Sheriff Roger Scott said the project is progressing a couple of weeks ahead of schedule because of the mild winter.

He said the upcoming winter should not slow down construction either, as crews will be working inside and under a roof at that time.

The expansion is slated to be operational by July 2018, although inmates will not move in until August.

Scott said that in early 2018, jail officials will be checking out all of the systems in the expanded jail to make sure everything is functional and secure.

“There’s just a lot of things you have to look at to avoid problems in the future escape, people getting hurt,” he said.

Eight additional corrections deputies will be needed to staff the expanded jail.

Once completed, the jail will be 83,630 square feet and have 163 beds, with the county planning to put 133 to immediate use.

The jail opened in 1980 and was 46,481 square feet with the capacity for 64 inmates. After overcrowding in the late ’80s, beds were added to increase capacity to 89.

The addition should allow enough space to house the average of 30 to 50 inmates who are held in other counties’ jails because of limited bed space at the DeKalb County Jail.

Joyce Klein, the sheriff’s chief of corrections, said housing an inmate in another county costs $60 a day. The county spent $7 million over an eightyear period to house inmates elsewhere, officials have said.

She said DeKalb County also could earn money by housing inmates from other counties; however, it is not a priority in the project.

Scott said renting out space to federal prisoners would require a joint County Board decision, and community concerns also would have to be taken into account, as importing more prisoners could be dangerous.

“Federal prisoners coming into town might not be desirable,” Scott said. “I think that would be a discussion maybe for the future.”

The expanded jail will include a 58-bed housing unit, a booking area for up to 25 people, a kitchen, medical area, isolation rooms, three elevators and an outdoor break room for staff, among other features.

Klein said the expansion is about 40 percent complete, with about 10 months of construction to go.

“That was a major milestone, the connection between the old building and the expansion,” Scott said. “We’ll be able to use both facilities as part of the security system.”

Gary Hanson said the project has gone “very well,” aligning with its budget of about $35 million.

“I’m confident we’ll meet the target,” he said.

Hanson said some details are bound to change with such a large project, but nothing out of the ordinary has happened to pull the project off course.

The county also has $1 million in contingency funds for any additional costs that may come up, he said.

The county is using increased revenue from tipping fees at Waste Management’s landfill near Cortland to finance about 90 percent of the project, while sales tax revenue accounts for the remaining 10 percent, Hanson said.

He said the county has saved about $1 million in interest costs by fronting the costs of the project and waiting to issue bonds, which will occur in midJune.

Hanson said the bonds would be in the $33 million range.

DeKalb mayoral candidates discuss integrating NIU

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Efforts to make Northern Illinois University a more integral part of the community was an issue DeKalb’s four mayoral candidates discussed during a forum Wednesday at Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center.

Candidates Jerry Smith, Michael Embrey, Misty Haji-Sheikh and incumbent Mayor John Rey were asked how they could integrate NIU’s student population into the community and how the city could work with the university to increase the declining enrollment.

Rey said it is imperative that the student population be considered in discussions on the business climate, and he recommended that residents register to speak before NIU’s Board of Trustees.

“NIU is our major economic driver in this community, and businesses can satisfy both students and the city,” Rey said. “I’ve been told move-in weekend is the equivalent of two Black Friday sales, and businesses turn over hundreds of thousands of dollars of inventory.”

On increasing enrollment, Rey said building a relationship with potential students and seeing that the community is student-friendly is important.

He referenced conversations city staff have had with NIU student leaders on how to make downtown DeKalb more desirable for students.

“We should be a good listening ear for students,” he said.

Smith said that as mayor, he would push for the university administration to consider seating him on the Board of Trustees to get the city more involved with school decisions.

“Students at NIU have been an integral part of the community,” Smith said. “We need to say to NIU as a community that we want to be part of the solution.”

Smith agrees with the city’s effort to collaborate with NIU students. He said that students who are applying to some universities receive information not only on what the school offers but what

its city offers, as well, and he recommended that DeKalb follow suit.

“What a great idea we could do in DeKalb to support incoming students,” Smith said.

Embrey said that with about 6,000 fewer NIU students than five years ago, the community has lost out on millions of dollars in sales a year, and right now, the city does not have the economy to support many of the stores that would integrate the needs of both residents and students.

“This does need to be addressed and will happen in the future,” Embrey said.

Embrey said that there is a bad public perception of the city but not necessarily of the university.

“We need to bring more people to the campus to show how good it is,” he said. “If only the base presidential salary was based on the number of students on campus, then, boy, would that attitude change real quick.”

Haji-Sheikh said that NIU is not necessarily a commuter college but a suitcase college, where students have traveled far enough to be away from their parents but close enough to travel back during the weekends.

“But if there’s something they can do and afford, they’re willing to do it, and we need to market to students,” Haji-Sheikh said.

She said that the city can work with the Board of Trustees to both lower tuition and work on making budget cuts.

“There’s a bill in the Illinois House to give some relief for tuition, and if we come up with a plan, we can work together to lower tuition,” Haji-Sheikh said. “I do think they can work on that, and I’ve had experience in cutting a budget on the DeKalb County Board, and I’m happy to work with the [Board of Trustees] on that because students need relief.”

Four candidates running for Kishwaukee College’s Board of Trustees also participated in the forum. Donald Young and incumbents Robert Johnson, Robert Hammon and Linda Mason answered audience questions in hopes of being elected to one of the three sixyear terms on the board.

DeKalb police seize LSD, cocaine, heroin, meth in searches

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A DeKalb man faces multiple drug charges after police said they found him in possession of drugs, including heroin, cocaine and LSD, after serving a search warrant at a pair of apartments, DeKalb police said Wednesday.

Gerald J. Cook, 36, of DeKalb was arrested after police searched apartments at 131 and 131½ S. Seventh St. on Tuesday, according to a news release.

According to the release, Cook is charged with possession of more than 300 doses of LSD, 5.5 grams of liquid LSD, 1.25

ounces of cocaine and 3.8 grams of heroin. He also is charged with possession of methamphetamine and the prescription drugs hydrocodone, oxycodone, lorazepam and Adderall.

Police obtained the warrants after months of investigating the illegal sale of drugs at the property, the release said.

The drugs seized were intended to be sold to people in the DeKalb area, police said.

SYCAMORE – Police are seeking the public’s help identifying a man who bought a number of items using a credit card that was stolen from a vehicle in DeKalb earlier this month.

Police have obtained security camera video that shows the man making purchases about 6:40 a.m. March 8 at Hy-Vee, 2700 DeKalb Ave., Sycamore.

His face was partially hidden by a white surgical mask. The man also was captured on video driving a 2000 to 2004 black Mitsubishi Eclipse.

The suspect bought other items at retailers in DeKalb the same morning, police said.

Ellwood House to host program about wives of local legends

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In honor of Women’s History Month, the Ellwood House Museum will kick off its Local Lore lecture series with a presentation on the wives of DeKalb’s three “barbed wire barons.”

This free program, titled “The Women behind the Big Three: Harriet Ellwood, Lucinda Glidden and Sophia Haish,” will be at noon Friday at the museum’s visitor center, 509 N. First St. Attendees are encouraged to bring a sack lunch for the event.

In addition to being some of the early pioneers and manufacturers of barbed wire, Jacob Haish, Joseph Glidden and Isaac Ellwood made other contributions to DeKalb, such as bringing the Northern Illinois State Normal School, which eventually became Northern Illinois University.

The presenters will be Ellwood House curator Tricia Runzel, Glidden Homestead Executive Director Rob Glover and Haish descendant Jessi Haish LaRue. This is the second year the museum has conducted hourlong Local Lore lectures, which will be once a month through November to educate people on DeKalb County’s history.

Local Lore is being presented in partnership with DeKalb-area historic sites and museums, including Glidden Homestead, the Gurler Heritage Association, the Egyptian Theatre, the Joiner History Room and the DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association.

The series is funded in part by the Mary E. Stevens Concert and Lecture Fund.

This 20th-century Flora Danica porcelain platter is 18 1/2 inches by 14 1/4 inches. It features a tall, yellow mullein flower.

The dish is fully marked on the bottom with factory marks and the impressed number 3520. Auction price, $984 in a Skinner Inc. auction in Massachusetts. ribs and a white-and-black-spotted cat climbing up it. The pitcher is about 10 inches tall and is marked “Erphila Fayence Germany” on the bottom.

A: The “Erphila” mark was used on pottery and porcelain imported from Germany, Czechoslovakia and other countries by Ebeling & Reuss, a giftware company in business in Philadelphia from 1866 to at least 2002. Some of the pieces are very collectible today. The mark combines the company’s initials, “E” and “R,” and “Phila,” the first letters of Philadelphia. It was used after 1920.

Many authors define American Victorian furniture in terms of one of the many design types used from 1840 to 1900, but all of them are Victorian.

Federal furniture, inspired by the French Empire style, was going out of favor and the heavy square look with straight backs, hard seats, black wood and fabrics and perhaps gold trim was being replaced by ornate carvings possible because of the jigsaw. Variations in designs continued until Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts appeared during the 20th century. There was the Gothic Revival style, inspired by church chairs and stained-glass windows; Rococo Revival featuring scrolls, flowers, leaves and shapes possible because of the first laminated wood; and the even larger and fancier Renaissance Revival.

And there even was a Greco-Egyptian Revival with sphinx heads, obelisks and hieroglyphics. By 1900, the Eastlake period based on simpler designs used by Midwestern furniture factories ended the Victorian era. Most expensive today are Renaissance Revival pieces by famous makers like John Henry Belter, Herter Brothers and Alexander Roux, all from New York. But less-famous furniture made in other cities sell today for much lower prices. H.B. Mudge Furniture Co. of Cincinnati made a sofa with scroll arms and tufted upholstery that sold for only $492 at a Cowan’s auction in Ohio.

There are other makers, like Mitchell & Rammelsberg or Berkey & Gay, which made attractive Victorian pieces that sell for less than today’s reproductions. *** Q: Is there an easy way to date CocaCola trays? I know there are a lot of copies.

A: Original trays are decorated with women dressed in the clothing of the day.

Dresses, hats and hairdos are a good clue.

The trays also often picture celebrities of the day. The shape of the tin tray has changed. The first ones, from 1897 to 1910 were round. Next came ovals from 1910 to 1921. The trays were always rectangular after that. Reproductions were first made during the 1970s. *** Q: I have my mother’s Bye-Lo doll and wonder what the value might be. She is 12 inches long with a bisque head, cloth body, cloth feet and celluloid hands,

which are in excellent condition with no cracks. There is a voice box in the body, but it doesn’t work. She has open and close eyes and painted eyelashes, hair and lips. The back of the head is marked “1923 by Grace S. Putnam, Made in Germany.” Who was Grace Putnam? It doesn’t sound like a German name.

A: Grace Storey Putnam (1877-1947) was a California sculptor who modeled Bye-Lo Baby’s features based on those of a three-day old baby she visited in a nearby hospital. She received her first copyright in 1922. After trying several manufacturers, she took her designs to George Borgfeldt & Co. in New York City and they became the sole licensee.

Putnam intended the dolls to have cloth bodies, but gave Borgfeldt permission to use their “stock bodies.” Dolls that cried were made by 1926. Bye-Lo Baby dolls were until about 1952. They were made in bisque, composition, celluloid, cloth, wax and wood in nine sizes, from 9 inches to 20 inches. The bisque doll heads were made by several German companies. You didn’t send a picture and the value of your doll depends on its condition, head and body type, size, and age. Some Bye-Lo Babies sell for a few hundred dollars and others for over $1,000. The fact that the crier isn’t working lowers the value. *** Q: Where can I get my Vaseline Depression glass collection appraised? I may have to sell some pieces because we are downsizing.

A: You can find a local appraiser by contacting a national appraiser group, like Appraisers Association of America (www. appraisersassociation.org), American Society of Appraisers (www.appraisers. org) or International Society of Appraisers (www .isa-appraisers.org). Ask what it costs for an appraisal. If you have some very expensive pieces, you may want to sell them at auction. If you want to know what you can sell your collection for in your area, contact a local antiques dealer, auctioneer or consignment shop that carries glass like yours and see if anyone wants to buy it for resale. You also can check prices online on sites like Kovels.com, replacements.com and listings online. If you collected the glass, you must have some idea of the price. A dealer can pay only about one-third to one-half of the retail price. *** Q: I’d like some information about a pitcher I inherited from my aunt. It was her favorite thing. It’s pink with swirled

State gives layoff notices to 124 prison nurses; 17 at Stateville

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration has told 124 prison nurses that their jobs are being privatized, a move their union blasted as retaliation for its rejection of a contract offer last year.

The nurses include 17 at Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill.

Nurses stationed at 12 state prisons will be dismissed June 15, two days after the contract nurses are hired, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press that the prison system’s labor chief sent this week to the Illinois Nurses Association.

Alice Johnson, the association’s executive director, noted the notice came days after the union filed an unfair labor practices complaint with state regulators, claiming the first-term Republican governor has reneged on his obligation to negotiate contract terms in good faith. She said members overwhelmingly rejected a tentative agreement last spring and Rauner is retaliating.

“It’s an attempt to bully and intimidate the nurses, and it’s not going to work,” Johnson said.

She said the move is particularly troublesome because of a nationwide shortage of nurses that forces Illinois prison nurses to sometimes work 80hour weeks while vacant positions go unfilled.

Lawsuit: Chicago violates law by destroying 911 tapes

CHICAGO – A group of Chicago civil rights lawyers has filed a lawsuit alleging that the city’s policy of destroying 911 recordings after 30 days violates state law.

The Chicago Civil Rights Project filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court, arguing that the city illegally deleted the recordings “for administrative convenience,” unless there was a notice to preserve specific recordings.

The suit said the practice makes it difficult to obtain evidence because 30 days often isn’t enough time for attorneys to know whether such records are relevant.

Solar panels at Waukegan schools generating energy

WAUKEGAN – Solar panels installed at seven Waukegan public schools are now generating power.

The Chicago Tribune reported that nearly 2,200 rooftop panels are up and running this week. Final touches are being made on monitors for each school’s lobby showing how energy is generated.

The panels can generate up to 681 kilowatts of energy – enough energy to power 540 homes.

Seventeen minutes.

That is a shockingly long time for an intruder to roam undetected on the grounds of the White House while the president is inside the executive mansion. Fortunately, the intruder March 10 was carrying nothing more lethal than two cans of pepper spray.

But how could such a breach of security have occurred? Secret Service officials owe an answer.

And while they are at it, they also might explain why they initially tried to minimize the seriousness of the incident.

The security failure, in which a 26-year-old California man with a history of mental illness pierced the outer perimeter of the White House near the Treasury Department, renews questions about the Secret Service’s ability to protect the country’s leaders and facilities.

A series of embarrassments, including a 2014 incident in which an intruder with a knife managed to get into the White House before being tackled by an off-duty agent in the East Room, brought the agency under scrutiny. Thsat caused an overhaul of management that supposedly tightened protections. That makes this latest incident, along with the theft of an agent’s laptop containing sensitive information about Trump Tower, all the more troubling.

“I worry this is the worst one yet ... it scares me,” said Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Chaffetz, describing a surveillance video viewed by the committee Monday in a closed-door briefing, detailed how the intruder cleared a fence and ground barriers, lingered on the south portico of the White House, moved through the south garden and peered in several windows before being apprehended.

Only after Chaffetz raised questions did the Secret Service release a timeline of events disclosing that agents failed to detect the intruder for 17 minutes. A spokesman for the agency declined to comment when we asked why the agency had not been more forthcoming, a lapse particularly pronounced in light of President Donald Trump’s (clearly premature) compliment about them doing a “fantastic job” in this case.

The Secret Service urgently needs to get its house in order. The agency is without a permanent director after the retirement of Joseph Clancy. In choosing a replacement, Trump would do well to take to heart recommendations about the need for someone from outside the agency to bring a fresh eye to its operation.

King’s hate an opportunity for GOP

Rep. Steve King’s rampant racism is an opportunity for Iowa Republicans and the party at large. Exorcise the nationalist bent before it’s too late.

The House should make an example of King, and Iowa GOP should be actively seeking a candidate to oust him in next year’s primary.

King’s Sunday tweet, in support of a right-wing Dutch nationalist, Geert Wilders, laid bare that which has infected the party of Lincoln for far too long.

“Wilders understands that culture and demographics are our destiny. We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies,” King tweeted, a direct shot at Muslim refugees and their children.

King has made a career out of nibbling the edges of white supremacy. Such inflammatory speech is what gets him on national TV talk shows. He’s not serving Iowa’s 4th Congressional District. And thanks to his lust for attention, King serves as a self-appointed representative for Iowa.

It’s through his actions that the nation sees us.

Many prominent Republicans

rightly decried King’s initial statement. They no doubt fumed as he went on CNN and doubled-down.

“First of all, I do not agree with Congressman King’s statement.

We are a nation of immigrants, and diversity is the strength of any nation and any community,” Iowa GOP Chairman Jeff Kaufmann said in a statement.

Kaufmann took an even harder swing at former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke, who was, unsurprisingly, overjoyed by King’s declaration.

“Regarding David Duke, his words and sentiments are absolute garbage. He is not welcome in our wonderful state,” Kaufmann said.

Gov. Terry Branstad and governor-in-waiting Kim Reynolds correctly smacked King for his outright bigotry.

Strong words are welcome. But action is necessary. Unchecked, this strain of right-wing nationalism will consume the party.

It’s already threatening political orders throughout the West, the very civilization that King claims he wants to save.

Like so many others, King is obviously emboldened by the rise of President Donald Trump.

He’s dropped the thin veil that had cloaked his prejudice. Trump might not like to admit it, but the go-to dog whistles that propelled his campaign spoke directly to the hard right’s notion of racial purity and a civilization under siege from the others. That’s why Duke and his ilk are suddenly relevant again. It’s why Jews are suddenly under threat.

This is not the rhetoric of your father’s GOP, the party of reason and Reagan. It is, however, the same disgusting drivel that was thrown at Irish, Polish and Italian immigrants a century ago. It’s fear and weakness masquerading as strength.

King should be censured in the House. His bigotry is protected speech. But the First Amendment does not shield him from professional consequences. And next year, King should face a strong opponent in the GOP primary, one with full backing of the state party.

King’s breed of hate-filled nationalism is a threat to the GOP. But it’s also an opportunity to rebuke such gutlessness in the strongest possible terms.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru administration granted their wish. The Republican House voted to overturn that decision, though, and the matter is now before the Senate. Enough Senate Republicans might be receptive to arguments for state-government autonomy to allow the liberal states to escape regulation.

Opponents of state IRAs, such as the Chamber of Commerce, make several arguments against them. One is that they could reduce employers’ participation in 401(k)s.

A recent survey of small businesses found that 13 percent said they would end their plans and enroll their employees in state IRAs, if they were instituted.

That number could grow as employers become more aware of the state-run programs, and as lawsuits make them less eager to administer their own plans.

For their workers, it would be a shift to retirement plans with lower contribution caps, no matching contributions and fewer legal protections.

The opponents also note that a lot of states, including the states that want to start these plans, have not managed their

own employees’ pensions well. This argument isn’t entirely fair.

A perennial problem with government pensions is underfunding: Politicians promise generous benefits in the future, but won’t put money in their plans here and now, and assume high returns to make up the difference.

State IRAs don’t pose this risk. They’re defined-contribution plans, which means the money gets set aside with each paycheck, and there is no promise of specific benefit levels in the future.

To say the risks are lower, however, is not to say there are none. Would states favor particular investments for political reasons? Would management of investments be handed to politically favored contractors?

There also are alternative ways of expanding access to retirement-savings vehicles for the millions of private-sector workers who don’t have access to plans via their employer. One, endorsed by the Chamber of Commerce, would be to change federal law to enable multiple employers to band together to offer their employees 401(k)s. Those plans would come with ERISA protections.

So maybe states shouldn’t start running IRAs for private-sector workers.

But that leaves the question: If the states decide they want to take on this responsibility, why should the federal govern-

ment regulate them? One answer is provided by Tom Christina, a specialist in employee benefits at Ogletree Deakins, a law firm that represents employers.

“If these plans turn out not to have acceptable rates of return, then I think you will see the constituents of those plans in the various states clamoring for some kind of relief and one of the things that all of these plan designs have in common is that the states disclaim any responsibility for the rate of return,” he said.

“So the clamoring will be in the general direction of Washington.”

State-government mismanagement, especially of pensions, has already created a danger that federal bailouts of states will someday be required. It’s a thorny problem without a good solution.

Under the circumstances, letting states manage more retirement money at their discretion seems imprudent.

Congress should clarify that states can offer these IRAs, but that their plans will come under ERISA rules. Devolution is often a good idea, but this time Congress should say no.

Health department services critical to community

To the Editor: I am a family practice physician and have practiced in DeKalb County since 1985. I have been affiliated with the DeKalb County Health Department for more than 30 years, first as a board member and now as medical director.

Our health department has a history of excellent management and services, with responsible stewardship of public dollars.

In fact, a wide array of public health services is provided for only 48 cents out of every $100 of your local taxes.

After years of reduction in grant revenue from the federal and state levels, and reduction of services and staff, the health department outlook for the future calls for additional funding to be able to continue providing current services.

I am voting ”yes” for the referendum to provide public health services because I

do not want to see our health department services reduced any further. Further reductions could have a detrimental effect on health in the county. Moreover, poorer health is associated with educational and social costs. We know that public health saves health care dollars as well as the additional associated costs.

Thus, $9.57 annually for the owner of a $100,000 home, the additional cost if the referendum is approved, is a good value for the return on the investment that would be gained by DeKalb County.

I have seen firsthand the dedication and expertise of our health department staff in dealing with several potentially serious outbreaks in our county. Thanks to their timely intervention and professional care, problems were treated and infections contained before they became much more widespread.

In order to respond to infectious disease outbreaks and other health threats and emergencies, and to ensure that the babies who are born stay healthy, we need the health department to sustain its current services.

Please join us in voting ”yes” on April 4 for the referendum to provide public health services.

Her people skills are exceptional, whether it be working with 4-year-olds, 90-yearolds and everyone in between. If you had a problem and needed help, Lisa made herself available to help solve the problem.

She also didn’t hesitate to try new programs, gathering the knowledge, materials and people to carry it out. Communicating and developing working relationships also are some of her strongest traits.

Lisa has the ability to delegate the right

person for a specific job. Her positive attitude, enthusiasm and energy make it a joy to be around her and work with her.

Lisa has launched many new programs that benefited veterans, food pantries, low-income families, schools, libraries and park districts in her primary work counties of Boone and Ogle, while still helping organizations and low-income children in her community.

We recommend Lisa for the Sycamore city clerk position. Her leaving the University of Illinois Extension will be an enormous loss, especially felt by us here in Ogle County.

It’s unusual to see Republicans trying to impose regulations on state governments in order to protect workers. But that’s what they’re doing, and they have a point.

The dispute concerns private-sector workers whose employers don’t sponsor retirement-savings plans such as a 401(k). Several state governments want to run programs for those employees, whose employers would have to automatically enroll them unless the worker opts out.

Almost all retirement plans for private-sector workers are regulated by a 1974 federal law: the Employee Retirement Income Security Act. The law sets accounting standards on such plans, imposes fiduciary obligations on their administrators, and in other ways seeks to prevent abuse.

Pension plans for state government workers, on the other hand, are exempt from the law, known as ERISA, because of concerns about federalism. The state governments that want to establish these new retirement accounts for private-sector workers want them to be exempt from the law, too.

To understand the partisan alignments on this question, it’s worth noting that the states in question are very liberal ones, such as California, Connecticut, Illinois and Oregon. The Obama

Now, Wilmarth is getting his chance to do the same at Genoa-Kingston.

Wilmarth, who has been the wrestling coach at Genoa-Kingston for the past two seasons, was approved by the Genoa-Kingston School District 424 board Tuesday to take over for the

retiring Bill McCarty.

Wilmarth remains the wrestling coach.

“I’ve got some really good assistants for both football and wrestling, and they’ve done a great Chad job,” Wilmarth said.

“It was something I spent some time thinking about,” Wilmarth said.

“I know not a whole lot of people who have done both. ... So I reached out to Coach Elsbury and got his opinion, then I had a conversation with my wife about it. But I have a great staff, and with their help, I can accomplish both positions.”

Wilmarth has been an assistant on the football team for the past three years, including the past two under

McCarty. The Cogs went 9-0 in the regular season this past year and 11-1 overall. They were 16-6 in McCarty’s two years back at the school – they went 33-26 in his first stint.

Wilmarth coached the offensive line, linebackers and special teams for the Cogs under McCarty, and said he’s not planning on making a big overhaul.

“The plan for now is to be the same,” Wilmarth said. “There may be a few minor changes, but it’s going to be

Huskies inconsistent heading into MAC play

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Northern Illinois baseball coach Mike Kunigonis said that the Huskies have had solid outings in each phase of the game this season.

The problem has been putting them all together in the same game.

The Huskies have struggled with consistency so far and carry a 4-16 record into the start of Mid-American Conference play, which begins Friday at Toledo.

“It’s not one thing, we just haven’t put a complete game together yet,” Kunigonis said. “We’ve hit, we’ve played D, we’ve pitched – we haven’t done the three together consistently.

Once that happens, we’re going to win a lot of games.”

The Huskies don’t play their home opener until they host Bowling Green on March 31. NIU rebounded from a tough start last season, taking a 4-16 record into conference play before finishing 14-10 in the MAC. Despite the poor record, there have been bright spots for the Huskies this season. “It was our first win over a ranked team in a long time, so that’s huge,” junior pitcher Donovin Sims said. “I thought it was a great team win overall. ... I think with that win, it showed us that we can beat those kind of teams.”

The Huskies were tied with the Wolverines heading into the final inning in

the next game, but allowed a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.

In the first game, NIU jumped out to an early two-run lead, but the Wolverines scored seven in the third and went on to win, 7-4.

“That has been our Achilles’ heel – limiting the big inning,” Kunigonis said.

SIU-Edwardsville, starter Joe Hawks put the first two Cougars base runners on before getting some help from his defense. SIU-Edwardsville hit a hard line drive up the middle, which NIU second baseman Brad Wood caught before touching second base for a forceout and throwing it to first baseman Tommy Hook for the first recorded triple play in school history.

“That was nice, that was nice,” laughed Hawks, who was the winning pitcher against Michigan. “To go with no outs and two guys on to out of the inning in one pitch definitely gets you going.”

Sims has been the best starter for the Huskies, overcoming a slow start to head into MAC play with a 2-0 record and a 3.19 ERA in five appearances. As a team, NIU has a 6.10 ERA. Offensively, the Huskies are hitting only .231 on the season, but have three players – freshman Jacob Dunham (.323), junior Roderick Bynum (.320) and junior Jesus Tovar (.302) – hitting better than .300.

“Being 4-16, nobody’s happy about that, but we’re not even halfway through the season,” Bynum said. “We could go 16-4 in our next 20 games. It can be easy to regroup and clear our heads and settle down a little bit.”

‘Leury Legend’ good bet to make Sox’ Opening Day roster

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Basketball is not a big deal in Leury Garcia’s native country, so let’s cut him some slack for not knowing who Larry Bird is.

But he should know.

When Garcia, who has been up and down with the Sox from Triple-A Charlotte since 2013, first joined the Sox in 2013, coach Joe McEwing playfully began calling him “Larry Legend,” after the NBA great.

“Larry Legend, yeah,’’ Garcia said Wednesday, smiling. “As soon as I got here he gave me that nickname. I don’t know where that come from but ... .”

In the course of the conversation about Bird, teammate Todd Frazier, passing by, provided helpful hand signals to Garcia, who is from the Dominican Republic.

“Number 33?” Garcia said.

therefore valuable, and appears to stand a good chance. The only positions he hasn’t played in the majors are first base and catcher. He even pitched a couple of games in a pinch.

“It has helped me a lot,’’ Garcia said.

“They can put me in the lineup wherever they need me to play.”

Garcia is having a good spring, 15for-45 (.333) with four doubles, two walks and two stolen bases in two attempts. A switch-hitter, he can play center field and all over the infield. Manager Rick Renteria said he is comfortable playing Garcia anywhere he has played.

“Leury has shown pretty solid defensive prowess at all of them and kind of transitions very easily,’’ Renteria said.

BURDI STICKS AROUND

“I’m not too worried about where I start off or end up,’’ Burdi said. “It’s a process. You have to just keep growing day by day and not let all the outside noise affect you. It’s easy to let that happen when there is so much hype around the young group here. All the guys have done a good job blocking it out and going about their business.”

Burdi will make his 10th appearance Thursday against the Reds.

He has pitched well, with three earned runs allowed on four hits over 10 innings (2.70 ERA) with 12 strikeouts and four walks.

The Sporting News named him its executive of the year, but by 1987 Green was fired after years of feuding with executives at the Tribune Co., which owned the team.

“The guy at the Tribune was a [fool],” he said of John Madigan during a conversation with the Sun-Times in 2013. “And I had no business getting

fired. Those guys were a year away yet, but we knew where we were, and we knew what we had done, and we knew the kind of talent we had.

“But corporate people eventually learn to talk the lingo. And once they learn how to talk the lingo, they think they know baseball.”

Lester: Best in (free agent) class after 2 years?

MESA, Ariz. – Two years into a sixyear, nine-figure contract, the Cubs already have gotten their money’s worth out of Jon Lester.

All $155 million worth the past two years alone?

Believe it. If he took the next four years off, it still might make him the best value from a free-agent class two winters ago that Jon Lester included 2016 National League Cy Award winner Max Scherzer.

The Cubs won’t go that far. And Lester certainly doesn’t believe it.

But the Cubs went from 73 wins and a vision before Lester’s signing to 200 wins the past two regular seasons and winning five of six postseason series – including the season Cub fans

have waited 108 years to see and that the business department might spend almost as much time cashing in on.

When the Cubs signed their first nine-figure player – Alfonso Soriano after a last-place finish in 2007 – nobody believed that eight-year, $136 million deal would pay off with individual player value for eight years.

But everybody involved counted on the value paying off on the front end with a championship that never came.

Lester was one of many players who affected that organizational breakthrough the past two seasons.

Just imagine if he does anything close this year to what he did last year – 19-5, 2.44 ERA, runner-up finish to Scherzer in the Cy Young voting and a 3-1, 2.02 ERA surge through the postseason over five starts and a Game 7 World Series relief appearance.

Never mind anything he might contribute on the backside of the contract if he stays healthy.

“You’ve kind of accomplished – no,

not kind of – we accomplished what I came here to do,” Lester, 33, said after an 86-pitch effort in a six-inning start on the minor league side of camp Wednesday (efficient enough that outs were added to some innings so he could get his prescribed work).

“That was the main reason why Theo wanted me to get here, and I wanted to come here,” added Lester, who has one more spring start before pitching the season opener April 2 in St. Louis. “Now the hard part is that you don’t get complacent. That’s where you still have to do your work and still put your time and all that other stuff to be ready to pitch.”

The work ethic and now-do-it-again attitude was part of what the Boston expatriates in the Cubs’ front office knew they were buying when they signed the player they drafted for the Red Sox in 2002.

“When we signed Jon to a six-year deal, certainly we were excited about all six years on the deal,” general

manager Jed Hoyer said. “But already sitting here after Year 2, he’s been exactly what we wanted. We wanted a guy that had the makeup to pitch in huge games, and he did that.”

That included an award for the National League Championship Series co-MVP and the New York baseball writers’ award for overall postseason MVP. Consider that in two postseasons with the Cubs, Lester has pitched 492/3 innings over nine starts and the relief appearance, with a 2.17 ERA. Scherzer? He made two first-round playoff starts last year without a win.

“There’s no way we’re world champions without Jon Lester,” Hoyer said. “That was the crux of the presentation that we gave him going back to [the free agency courtship].

The crux of it was, ‘You weren’t able to be a part of it in Boston. Come be a part of this in Chicago.’ And he was incredibly excited about that, and he delivered.”

MESA, Ariz. – A lot has been made for good reason the past few years about a culture change in the Cubs’ organization, leading to last year’s historic title.

But 30 years earlier, Dallas Green looked like he was about to pull off the same sea change in the organization – Theo before Theo.

“Dallas came in and totally changed the Cubs culture in that first year in 1982,” said Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, who was hand-picked from Green’s old organization in Philadelphia to be one of the first key young players acquired by that new regime.

“Dallas was instrumental in really my whole baseball career,” Sandberg said. “That was a huge opportunity and a huge break for me. … I definitely went and made the most of that opportunity.”

One of the most influential baseball executives in Cubs history, Green died Wednesday at age 82 after battling health issues in recent years.

“Very sad news,” said Sandberg, who had stayed in touch with Green and anticipated calling him again soon.

Green took the Cubs to the postseason for the first time since 1945 by assembling a star-studded team in 1984, acquiring Sandberg, Dennis Eckersley

have had the lasting affect – with Greg Maddux, Joe Girardi, Rafael Palmeiro, Shawon Dunston and Mark Grace among his draft picks.

“We probably did it too quick,” he told the Sun-Times, referring to the sudden expectations and impatience 1984 created.

“He had a vision, and he knew what was going to happen,” said Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez, who was drafted under Green in 1983 and for a while was part of the young core that returned to the playoffs in 1989. “He was trying to build an organization from within, and he really did that. In ‘89, all those guys that were there were still some of his guys.”

Said Sandberg: “He should have been part of ‘89, and, who knows, maybe many more (playoff) years after that.”

Five years after Green was fired, Maddux was allowed to depart for free agency despite offering compromises to stay.

“With Greg being [Green’s] guy, yeah, I believe that would have turned out differently,” Sandberg said.

Green’s legacy also includes vigorous efforts to get lights installed at Wrigley Field after the Cubs were denied home-field advantage in the 1984 playoffs because of the day-baseball limitation. The lights went in the season after he was fired.

The Wolverines have been a tournament darling since they escaped tragedy during an aborted takeoff on their way to the Big Ten tournament. Oregon has withstood the loss of big man Chris Boucher to a season-ending knee injury in the Pac-12 semifinals to make the Sweet 16 for a second year in a row.

All about Walton: When Michigan lost at home to Ohio State in early February, coach John Beilein said the mood around the team was “lower than low.” He demanded that everyone give just a little more effort. Derrick Walton Jr. took it to heart and has carried the team during its run. In the past six games, he’s averaging 19.7 points, 7.0 assists and 5.2 rebounds and shooting 41.7 percent from behind the 3-point line.

Going for 32: The Ducks would set the school record for wins if they beat Michigan. Oregon, Kansas and Villanova are the only three teams in the nation to have won 30 games each of the past two seasons.

These Jayhawks are a departure from coach Bill Self’s typical teams in that they use a four-guard lineup, led by standout Frank Mason III and star freshman Josh Jackson. Purdue will counter with a whole lot of size, led by 6-foot-9, 250-pound sophomore Caleb Swanigan and 7-footer Isaac Haas. The Boilermakers had a first-round tussle with Vermont before fending off another Big 12 foe, Iowa State, to reach the regional semifinals.

Fabulous freshman: Jackson has sent his NBA draft stock soaring with two exemplary games in the NCAA tournament, likely locking up a spot in the lottery if he departs after this season. Purdue also has a key freshman in guard Carsen Edwards, who averages more than 10 points coming off the bench.

Home sweet home: The Jayhawks will have a massive home-court advantage at Sprint Center, and it has generally paid off – they’re 34-7 in the building. But their last game in Kansas City was a loss to TCU in the Big 12 quarterfinals, when Jackson was serving a one-game suspension.

Size pays off: Purdue hopes to use its size advantage against Kansas, which has struggled with teams that can dominate the paint. Swanigan is the first Big Ten player since Evan Turner in 2010 to lead the league in scoring and rebounding, and he has a nation-leading 28 double-doubles this season.

Did you know? The Jayhawks are 2-1 against Purdue in the NCAA tournament, losing in 1994 and winning the next two meetings, including the 2012 regional in Omaha, Nebraska. Their series dates to 1948, when the teams split a home-and-home series.

The NCAA tournament’s first weekend closed with a flourish, a Sunday full of scintillating games after three days of good-not-alwaysgreat basketball.

That put the madness back in March and should carry over into a regional round filled with great matchups and big-name programs.

Here’s a rundown of the top games, players, coaches and interesting story lines for the Sweet 16:

TOP GAMES UCLA vs. Kentucky, South Region; Friday, Memphis. Blue bloods in Bluff City. NBA draft picks everywhere.

Rematch game. Coach Cal headed back to Memphis. Yeah, don’t miss this.

Gonzaga vs. West Virginia, West Region; Thursday, San Jose. A great con-

trast in styles between the smothering defense of the Mountaineers and the offensive firepower of the Zags.

Kansas vs. Purdue, Midwest Region; Thursday, Kansas City. The Jayhawks

have all those athletes. The Boilermakers have Mr. Double-Double Caleb Swanigan. The game will be just down the road from Lawrence, so expect the Sprint Center to be rocking.

Xavier vs. Arizona, West Region; Thursday, San Jose. Wildcats coach

WEST VIRGINIA vs. GONZAGA AT SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA No. 4 seed West Virginia (28-8) vs.

No. 1 seed Gonzaga (34-1), 6:39 p.m., TBS Bottom line: The Bulldogs make their eighth Sweet 16 appearance during a run of 19 straight tournament trips. They have lost in five of the previous seven trips and still are seeking the first Final Four in school history. The Mountaineers seek their third trip to the regional final since a runner-up appearance with Jerry West in 1959.

No need to sweat: With 29 wins by double digits and 13 by at least 30 points, Gonzaga has breezed through most games with little drama at the end. They did have to hold off Northwestern in a 79-73 win in the second round last week, and probably will have even more tough tests the rest of the way.

Giant slayers: The Mountaineers became the first team in five years to beat the No. 1 (Baylor) and No. 2 (Kansas) teams in the AP poll during

The Musketeers pulled off a pair of upsets to reach the regional semifinals, beating No. 6 seed Maryland and No. 3 Florida State the first weekend of the tournament. To get to the next

round, Xavier will have to beat one of the hottest teams in the bracket. Arizona earned a share of the Pac-12 regular-season title, won the Pac-12 tournament, then beat North Dakota and Saint Mary’s in the NCAA tournament.

Miller and Mack: Arizona coach Sean Miller and Xavier’s Chris Mack will be facing each other in regional semifinals for the second time in three years. The two are close; Mack was an assistant under Miller and was elevated to the head coaching job when he left for Arizona.

Keep an eye on: Xavier’s Trevon Bluiett and Arizona’s Lauri Markkanen. Bluiett struggled with injuries during the regular season, but has rounded back into form at the right time, leading the Musketeers into the regional semifinals despite a season-ending injury to point guard Edmond Sumner in late January. Markkanen is a difficult matchup for any team, a 7-foot freshman playing with the skills of a guard and can shoot from inside or out.

CHICAGO – Out of the rotation at times and with his contract set to expire, Nikola Mirotic understands what’s at stake for him as the season winds down.

Games like this certainly don’t hurt.

Mirotic scored a season-high 28 points, and the Bulls beat the Detroit Pistons, 117-95, in a matchup between struggling teams fighting for a playoff spot Wednesday night.

Mirotic shot 12 of 15 and made 4 of 6 3-point attempts to lead the Bulls to an easy win after dropping eight of 10. He’s set to become a restricted free agent, meaning his future is in question.

“I just want to prove those guys who trusted me – the Chicago Bulls,” he said.

“They ... gave me a chance. I was a firstround pick in 2011. I want to play well here.”

Jimmy Butler added 16 points and 12 assists. Joffrey Lauvergne filled in for suspended center Robin Lopez and outplayed Andre Drummond with 17 points and seven rebounds. Rookie Paul Zipser added a career-high 15 points as the Bulls moved into a ninth-place tie with Detroit in the Eastern Conference.

Tobias Harris and Marcus Morris each scored 14 for the Pistons, losers of five of six. Drummond grabbed 17 rebounds but scored just eight points on 4-of-12 shooting.

“It starts with me,” Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy said. “I’m the person in charge. I selected everybody in that locker room. I decide who plays. I put lineups out there, you know. I decide on defensive coverages. I call plays. So it’s all on me. I’m not running from that.

The Hawks fell behind the upstreaming Vancouver Canucks 4-1 in the third period and lost 5-4 in overtime after another mad-dash finish to tie in regulation.

On the contrary, Quenneville was adamant that this was nothing to worry about.

“When you look at what we gave up, you’ll win more than 90 percent of your games,” Quenneville said.

That’s a far cry from the concern Quenneville sounded a year ago in March, after a 6-2 loss to the Dallas Stars at the United Center in which the Hawks fell behind 4-0 in the first period en route to losing for the seventh time in nine games.

“We’ve got to find a way to rectify the way we play,” Quenneville said after that loss. “We’ve got to play with some urgency.”

After stealing three points in backto-back games in which they trailed by two and three goals in the third period against nonplayoff teams, the Hawks are in a much better position down the stretch than they were a year ago – building momentum instead of trying to find it. They’re 8-2-1 in March. Last year they were 5-6-2.

“I think the rookies can take huge credit for that,” defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson said. “I think Hartsy [Ryan Hartman] and Schmaltzy [Nick Schmaltz] and the new guys have been playing unbelievable this year. They’ve

been improving since Game 1 and just continue showing how important they are.”

Fresh legs clearly are making a difference. But arguably just as important is that the Hawks’ veteran core players might have a little more gas in the tank at this point of the season than in recent years – the reluctant benefits of a longer offseason in 2016 after losing to the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the playoffs. The Hawks were finished by April 25 last year. The previous three years they played into June – June 15 in 2015; June 1 in 2014 and June 24 in 2013, with Cup celebrations in 2013 and 2015.

Entering last season, nobody in the NHL had played more games since the start of the abbreviated 2012-13 season than Brent Seabrook (357), Hjalmarsson (355) and Jonathan Toews (349). Duncan Keith (337) was tied for fourth. And Patrick Kane (324) and Marian Hossa (322) also had heavy mileage on them.

It’s probably not a coincidence that over the past four seasons, the Hawks are 12-13-3 (.482) in March after winning the Cup and 17-5-2 (.750) in March after losing in the first round.

“Especially mentally you’re better off if you have a long summer,” Hjalmarsson said. “Physically you can be fine.

But it’s the mental part that’s always toughest to get back into it.”

Still intent on finishing the regular season strong, the Hawks’ veterans know they’re primed for another deep run.

“I think we feel pretty good about our chances in a seven-game series,” Kane said. “At the same time, we have a little bit of time left to shore up our game and make sure we’re reaching our peak headed into the playoffs.”

Barb City Brewfest comes to NIU Convo Center

raft beers lovers, as well as those who are curious about trying microbrewed beer, won’t want to miss the inaugural Barb City Brewfest on Saturday at Northern Illinois University’s Convocation Center.

Festivalgoers can sample more than 80 varieties of unique beer and cider from more than 40 breweries across the country. Forge Brewhouse in Sycamore and Genoa’s Cademon Brewing Company will offer their finest beers, as will some new and popular breweries from Chicago and the surrounding suburbs. Breweries from as far away as Hawaii, California, Colorado and Vermont also will be on hand. Malta’s Jonamac Orchard will offers samples of three varieties of its new JonaSMACK hard apple ciders.

Alessandro Vazquez, president of Brew Avenue Events, which is producing the festival, said he’s been looking to do an event like this in DeKalb for a while, and is very excited to bring craft beers to the area.

“There’s a demand for this kind of festival here, and it’s a great location where people are looking for good programming,” he said. “I wanted to create an event for people who aren’t as familiar with craft beers but who are interested in trying it. Of course craft beer aficionados will love [the festival] too.”

Andrew Nordman, owner and brewer of Cademon Brewing Company, said he’s excited about the opportunity to bring his beers to a wider audience.

“I enjoy talking about the interesting and eccentric beers that I brew, so I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“Bringing our beer out in our hometown is huge, and I like meeting people who like craft beer. I use atypical ingredients and mix that with traditional beer style to put a new twist on my beer. It’s a different approach.”

This is one of the bigger beer festivals that Sycamore’s Forge Brewhouse has been involved with. Owner Lisa Heinrich said she’s excited about mingling with both customers and brewers from all over the country. Forge will have samples of two bestsellers, the Imperial Black IPA and a Hefeweizen, a light German wheat beer.

“It’s fun to see what each local brewery is doing because there’s such a variety of beer,” she said. “All our recipes are unique to us. It’s always fresh, which is the best kind of beer.”

“We want people to know that we do have wine and hard cider. I think because we’re one of only a few businesses offering cider, we’ll be pretty popular with the crowd because we’ll be different,” Spychal said. “All our wines and ciders are made from apples grown at the orchard and all the juices are pressed here.”

In addition to the variety of beers, the event gives customers an opportunity to learn about the brewing process while socializing with the brewers in an open, comfortable environment, Vazquez said.

“It will be a great time. You’ll find some really special beers there, and try new things, and hopefully find a new favorite,” he said.

General admission tickets, which are valid between 1 and 4:30 p.m., cost $42 for 18 3-ounce samples. Early admission tickets, which are valid between noon and 4:30 p.m., cost $52 for 20 3-ounce samples. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Barb Wire Betties, DeKalb County’s roller derby team.

Gaelic Storm back by popular demand at Egyptian

news@daily-chronicle.com One of the area’s favorite national musical acts is back in DeKalb for the 10th straight year, as Gaelic Storm brings its high energy, Celtic-inspired music to the Egyptian Theatre on Friday.

The all-ages show is always a highlight on the theater’s calendar and attracts fans from across the region.

Gaelic Storm formed in the mid1990s as a pub band in Santa Monica, California, and the five-piece band has been touring ever since, even appearing in the blockbuster film “Titanic.”

Ryan Lacey, drummer and percussionist, said the band can’t wait to play in DeKalb, and this show is always one of the best, simply because they have so many fans from the Chicago area in the audience.

“We always know a lot of people in the crowd, so we see familiar faces, and that makes this show unique.

We have a great rapport with the audience, and there’s always a lot of interaction,” he said. “The theater is gorgeous and DeKalb is an awesome town. It’s always a great stop on our tour.”

Alex Nerad, executive director of the Egyptian, said Gaelic Storm has a very passionate fan base and a large following in the area, which makes the show one of the theater’s best-selling performances every year.

“Many of their fans go to multiple shows, which speaks to how engaging they are in live performances. They put on a fun, interactive show and you can just tell how genuine and personable they are,” he said.

The audience can expect some traditional Celtic music, but the majority of the show features upbeat rock ’n’ roll music, with some tales and stories from the band thrown in. Nerad said it’s obvious the band members are having as much fun as the audience.

dancing and having a great time.”

Nerad, who is a longtime fan of Gaelic Storm, wanted to bring the band to DeKalb after seeing them perform live. He said he thought they would be a perfect fit for the community.

“I knew they play a lot of cities around the Midwest and I wanted to bring it here,” he said. “We love hosting community events, and we’re trying to bring in more national acts.

Nerad said he hopes to continue bringing Gaelic Storm to the Egyptian every year, as long as the community continues to support the show.

The five women of various ages share memories and stories of Mrs. King’s extraordinary life and their sorrow at her passing. However, they discover a generational division in what Dr. and Mrs. King’s contribution to civil rights has meant for each of them.

Their disparate understandings

range from that of the oldest woman who was a direct participant in the 1960s movement, to one’s belief that the King’s struggles actually accomplished nothing against the racial injustices that still exist, to that of a college student covering the funeral for NPR and completely naïve about the history they are all there to celebrate.

Inspired by the long line of mourners who came to pay their final respects to Coretta Scott King, play-

wright, novelist and poet Pearl Cleage measures King’s accomplishments and spirit during the civil rights era against the current state of black women in America.

DAWC art exhibition closes Sunday DAILY CHRONICLE The DeKalb Area Women’s Center Gallery is hosting an exhibition of paintings by Haley Puffenbarger this month. The closing reception will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at 1021 State St. in DeKalb.

“As an artist, I create dynamic works of art that invite the viewer to get lost in the dazzling array of colors and free-flowing composition,” Puffenbarger said in a news release. “The pieces are mainly abstract and non-objective lending themselves to be expressive and open to interpretation.”

Puffenbarger is a student at Kishwaukee College.

“I am going to school so I can become an art therapist,” she said in the release. “I create art because it’s a tangible way for me to see the progress I am making. I find that painting is one of the most freeing and restorative things I can do.”

For the first weeks, rehearsals will be at FUMC. The April 5 practice will be a meet-and-greet so that new and experienced singers can get to know each other.

Music will be distributed and the group will listen to music for the cantata. Subsequent practices

will be at 8 p.m. Wednesdays at the church, with the exception of April 12, when there will be no practice.

Beginning the first Wednesday in June, two-hour practices will be begin at Boutell Memorial Hall on the Northern Illinois University campus from 7 to 9 p.m.

For those who are not singers, but would like to support the Patriotic Cantata, the chorus is registered with the DeKalb County Community Foundation for the May 4 Give Local campaign. This is an online donation day with the DCCF and other donors providing partial matching funds. To contribute on May 4, go to givedekalbcounty.org. 32 Alzheimer’s patients often get pneumonia Dear Doctor: I understand that Alzheimer’s disease causes memory loss and leads to dementia. But when someone has Alzheimer’s, what is the actual cause of death?

Dear Reader: Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease of the brain in which dementia is the most noticeable of numerous symptoms. Changes within the tissues of the brain slowly destroy vital connections between different regions of the brain, and between the brain and the body.

The result is that Alzheimer’s disease is the fifth-leading cause of death among adults 65 years and older, and is the sixth-leading cause of death for all adults nationwide.

The disease first was identified in 1906

by Dr. Alois Alzheimer, who connected a patient’s dementia to certain physical abnormalities he found when he examined her brain after her death. But the human brain is so intricate and Alzheimer’s itself is so complex that more than a century later, scientists still are working to discover both the cause of, and a cure for, the disease.

Although each case of Alzheimer’s is different, researchers have identified three general stages of the disease. In the first stage, symptoms of cognitive impairment, such as memory loss or confusion, have either not yet appeared or are quite mild.

However, significant changes are taking place within the brain, including nerve death, tissue loss and the buildup of abnormal clumps and tangles of protein.

These changes lead to the second stage of the disease, during which symptoms become more pronounced. Patients begin to experience significant memory loss, confusion, impaired reasoning, poor spatial skills and a loss of language. By the final stage of Alzheimer’s, the brain has shrunk dramatically. Patients no longer can communicate, are unable to recognize faces, even of family members and loved ones,

Patients with advanced-stage Alzheimer’s need 24-hour supervision and help with personal hygiene, dressing and eating.

Changes in brain function make it increasingly difficult for them to move about, sit up and even swallow. This leads to complications such as bedsores, skin infections, blood clots and sepsis. Injuries from falls are common. Difficulty in swallowing makes eating and drinking an ongoing challenge, and can lead to weight loss, malnutrition and dehydration.

The most common cause of death among Alzheimer’s patients is aspiration pneumonia. This happens when, due to difficulty in swallowing caused by the disease, an individual inadvertently inhales food particles, liquid or even gastric fluids. Because our mouths and throats contain numerous bacteria, these are carried deep into the lungs.

There they multiply and grow, which leads to pneumonia. Due to the impaired immune systems of Alzheimer’s patients, pneumonia is often fatal.

It’s important to remember that Alzheimer’s patients often are elderly and thus may have a range of medical conditions associated with advancing age. These include stroke, cancer, heart disease, diabetes and hypertension, any of which can cause death, whether or not Alzheimer’s is present.

Dear Abby: We recently lost one of our cherished pets, our oldest cat, Mandy. We never had children, so our pets ARE our children. I get that people who have never had pets don’t understand the joy and unconditional love they can bring. A couple of days later, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to put her to sleep. My question is, am I expecting too much of people? After all, you wouldn’t ignore the death of a human child. I’m not only disappointed but resentful that these so-called friends and family don’t seem to care. I suppose to some Mandy was “just a cat.” But to us, she was our beloved furry child, and we are devastated. I have known this guy “Noah” for six years.

We’re mostly just friends with benefits, but I’ve always had deeper feelings for him. I always wanted to see where things could go between us, so I mentioned it to him. He told me that if he didn’t already have a girlfriend, he would have dated me. So when they broke up, I waited patiently. I continued being a good friend to Noah, giving him advice and putting my own feelings off to the side. Then just when I felt us getting to another level in our relationship, he told me he had another girlfriend and we needed to stop. I would never sleep with a guy who is with someone else. I’m not that type of girl.

When West followed suit, declarer did not ruff; instead, he discarded a spade from the dummy. West then had either to lead away from his spade ace or to concede a ruff-and-sluff.
