Aurora man charged with drug-induced homicide in Waterman overdose death

An Aurora man was charged with drug-induced homicide Tuesday in connection with the Aug. 25 death of a man in Waterman, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Jerome A. Glover, 42, of the 300 block of Parkside Avenue, was identified over the course of a lengthy investigation as a person who helped provide Philip McDan- Jerome A. iel with the drugs that led to his Glover death, according to the release.

It did not specify what type of drug killed McDaniel.

McDaniel died in August at Bellview Apartments, 310 N. Elm St., Waterman, according to the release.

Glover was arrested Tuesday by Kane County Sheriff’s deputies in the 900 block of North Avenue in Aurora.

He is being held on $300,000 bond and will be taken to the DeKalb County Jail unless he is able to post bond, according to the release.

The investigation has found no other suspects, according to the news release.

DeKalb County Sheriff’s police could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Maple Park man struck, killed

by Union Pacific line train

Kane County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched about 1:40 a.m. Tuesday to a train hitting a pedestrian near Maple Park.

The initial investigation indicated that 20-yearold John Berens, of the 200 block of Charles Street in Maple Park, was walking east down the middle of the Union Pacific railroad tracks about a half-mile east of Maple Park in unincorporated Virgil Township, according to a sheriff’s office news release.

As a train traveling west approached Berens, he failed to get off the tracks and was struck by the train, the release said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Detectives are not sure why he was walking down the tracks or if he was aware of the approaching train,” according to the release.

The Union Pacific line was shut down until about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday as police investigated the crash.

In 2013, Labs grabbed the record for the longest stretch at No. 1, and they haven’t let go. Affable, relatively easy to train and eager to please, they’re popular partly because “you don’t have to be an expert dog owner to own a Lab,” AKC Vice President Gina DiNardo said. But for those seeking more than a family pet, the breed has proved itself at everything from bomb sniffing to guiding the blind.

The rest of the top 10, in order: German shepherds, golden retrievers, bulldogs, beagles, French bulldogs, poodles, Rottweilers, Yorkshire terriers and boxers.

The stats reflect puppies and other newly registered dogs in the AKC’s 189 recognized breeds. They don’t encompass the nation’s millions of mixed-

Rottweilers’ rise

At No. 8, the Rottweiler posted its highest ranking in almost 20 years. Renowned for their loyalty, confidence and protective instincts, Rotties were America’s second-most-popular dog in 1997 but faded to 17th within a decade, as some small breeds surged for a time. But Rottweilers muscled their way back into the top 10 in 2015.

Movers and shakers

Several breeds in the top 10 have been there for a decade or more, but French bulldogs were ranked just 36th a decade ago. The quizzical, push-faced dogs had been out of the top 10 for nearly a century before making it back the past two years, while their larger bulldog cousins have hit their highest ranking.

Some other breeds making sizeable moves in the past decade: Siberian huskies, up from 25th to 12th; great Danes, from 24th to 14th; and Australian shepherds, from 34th to 16th.

Forge Brewhouse moves ahead in relocating to downtown Sycamore

SYCAMORE – James Heinrich said the extra elbowroom in Forge Brewhouse’s new building should be a refreshing change, as his goal is to triple the brewpub’s production in the next year.

“Instead of needing a little wooden dolly to move kegs, we’re going to need a forklift,” he said.

Moving downtown is not the only change in store for Forge Brewhouse.

The owners also are planning to open a tap room in their off-site brewery, sell kegs of beer to other restaurants and add a lunch menu.

Heinrich, who co-owns Forge Brewhouse at 1330 E. State St. in Sycamore with his wife, Lisa Heinrich, said their goal is to have an off-site brewery up and running by the end of June and the new brewpub open Sept. 1.

Forge Brewhouse has been the only brewpub in Sycamore since the business opened in June 2015. It is known for serving a variety of unique craft beers and specialty pizzas.

The Heinrichs bought the downtown site at 327 W. State St. The space had been occupied by the now-closed Super $1 Store.

In January, the Sycamore City Council amended the city’s Class H liquor license to allow a microbrewery to sell its own beer produced on- and off-site. Prairie State Winery was given the same permission for its wine in 2013.

James Heinrich said the architect finished the drawings for the new brewpub last week, and they are in the process of submitting their plans for permits. They should be ready to begin work next month, he said.

He said they are close to signing a lease for their off-site brewery in DeKalb. The brewery will have 2,200 square feet of space for brewing, compared with only 300 square feet for brewing in the current location.

All of Forge’s beer will be brewed in the off-site brewery. Heinrich said they also are changing their licensing so they can sell beer from their brewery to other restaurants.

could buy kegs of our beer,” he said.

The off-site brewery also will function as a “tap room” where people can come in and order craft beer during limited evening hours, Heinrich said.

With about 200 square feet of additional space in the new brewpub, Heinrich said Forge will maintain its size of about 84 seats while adding a private room for parties of 25 to 30 people.

Forge will be expanding its kitchen space as well.

He said Forge’s chef is looking into coming up with sandwiches and new specials to offer in addition to the restaurant’s specialty pizzas.

“Our pizzas are so good, we’re not getting rid of them,” Heinrich said.

He said they also might add a few more beer taps, but they wouldn’t be “going crazy” with it.

“We might go [from 10] to 15, just because there’s so many different beer styles, and it’s fun to make the different beers,” Heinrich said. “People are always asking for something different.”

He said some customers have expressed concerns about limited downtown parking; however, there are about 20 city parking spots behind the building that aren’t typically used during evening hours, and the new brewpub could have a rear entrance.

Heinrich said he is hoping business will pick up during the later night hours, when people walk around downtown Sycamore. At the current location, business tends to die down after about 10 p.m. certain nights while the downtown area still is bustling, he said.

DeKALB – Memorial crosses lined the courtyard Tuesday at Northern Illinois University, where students, including Brandon Robertson Jr., had placed them one by one to represent the 128 homicide victims in Chicago so far this year.

Robertson, a junior family and child studies major, said he wanted to spread the message that “the violence has got to stop by any means.”

“I’m choosing to help out today, really because these are my people,” he said. “I really want to show people the amount of violence we have to deal with in today’s society and use this as a way to promote positivity and show people that we have to spread love.”

Robertson was one of about 15 students who helped set up the crosses, which were made by Greg Zanis, a retired Aurora carpenter who started the nonprofit Crosses for Losses.

Chicago violence has struck victims regardless of age or criminal involvement. In February, a 2-year-old girl riding in a car with her aunt was shot in the head and killed. An 11-year-old girl

“This is something that can’t be swept underneath the rug,” he said. “It’s something that’s going on. We’re on the same track as we were last year with the killings and everything.”

Chicago saw 762 homicides, 3,550 shooting incidents and 4,331 shooting victims in 2016, making it the deadliest year in nearly two decades, according to CNN. Hiley also said he is helping to organize a student prayer vigil for those who lost their lives to violence in Chicago.

The vigil will be at 3 p.m. Friday in the MLK Commons.

“With seeing these names, I want the campus to take away that it’s not only Chicago affected by the violence, but it’s also the individuals at NIU,” he said. “It’s starting to hit close to home.”

He preceded her in death in 1988. Shirley was a member of Dixon Rotary, and earned the Paul Harris Fellow award. She was full of life. She loved playing the piano and entertaining in different venues, and loved the North Woods in Wisconsin and traveling to Florida.

She met and married “Joe” C.K. Mathers on Aug. 7, 1941 in Van Horne, Iowa. She continued her education and graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1965. Mrs. Mathers was a teacher in Maple Park until retiring in 1974.

Adella enjoyed traveling and visited Australia, Hawaii, Europe, Israel and Alaska with her friends. She loved her children and grandchildren; they will forever have her in their hearts as “Grammadella.” She will be remembered by her family as being very talented. She liked to sew, quilt, and fish. She was also very helpful to her family and caring for others; she never complained.

DeKALB – Although a decision on two bids for heating, ventilation and air-conditioning projects in DeKalb School District 428 buildings was postponed, a bid for a Clinton Rosette Middle School ventilation system project was approved during Tuesday’s board meeting.

During board meetings in December and January, members sought bids for HVAC projects at Lincoln Elementary School, Huntley Middle School and Clinton Rosette.

Batavia-based Aires Consulting Inc. performed a study on Clinton Rosette last year that showed seven underground classrooms experienced humidity issues, and a new air system was recommended for these rooms.

DeKalb-based One Source Mechanical Inc. was the low bid with $347,400. The board unanimously approved this bid.

This project will be funded with tax increment financing dollars and operations and maintenance funds.

At Lincoln, which is the last district school to be without an air-conditioning system, a bid was approved from DeKalb Mechanical, totaling $1,134,000 for the

replacement of the school’s boiler system and piping and the installation of a chiller. Since the school’s boiler system contained asbestos in its insulation, there also was a separate bid to remove the material, which can cause lung cancer.

Indiana-based Environmental Assurance LLC was the low bidder for the asbestos abatement at $33,744, roughly a quarter of the project’s projected cost of $122,000.

Director of Facility Operations Tammy Carson said she was informed by the architect and engineer of the project that since the board did not approve this bid Tuesday, the project could not be completed this summer.

These projects would have been paid for with funds from the school’s life-safety and operations and maintenance budgets. The board unanimously approved postponing a ruling on them.

Huntley Middle School sought to install air conditioning in the building’s West Wing, which includes two floors of classrooms, two media center classrooms and one classroom near the upstairs locker rooms. Dunlap-based Commercial Mechanical Inc. was the lowest responsible bidder for this project at $547,000, nearly $100,000 more than budget.

Budget woes affect Peoria abuse prevention center

PEORIA – The Peoria County mother first came to the Center for Prevention of Abuse more than a decade ago to get aid for herself and her infant daughter.

From the moment she set foot in the center, the family received it – from an emergency phone to assistance with filing an order for protection. A counselor from the center came to her home and helped her craft a safety plan to protect herself from her abuser, and employees gave her continuous support through a multiyear court battle, from coping techniques to literally holding her hand through proceedings.

And that help has continued.

But that mother is one of many former and current clients concerned with the financial straits the center finds itself in as the state of Illinois budget impasse drags on.

CHICAGO – A 15-year-old Chicago girl was apparently sexually assaulted by five or six men or boys on Facebook Live, and none of the roughly 40 people who watched the live video reported the attack to police, authorities said Tuesday.

The video marks the second time in recent months that the Chicago Police Department has investigated an apparent attack that was streamed live on Facebook.

In January, four people were arrested after a cellphone footage showed them allegedly taunting and beating a mentally disabled Crystal Lake teen.

Police only learned of the latest alleged attack when the girl’s mother approached the head of the police department, Superintendent Eddie Johnson, late Monday afternoon as he was leaving a department station in the Lawndale neighborhood on the city’s West Side, department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

She told him her daughter had been missing since Sunday and showed him screen grab photos of the alleged assault.

He said Johnson immediately ordered detectives to investigate and the department asked Facebook to take down the video, which it did.

Guglielmi said Tuesday that detectives found the girl and reunited her with her family. He said she told detectives that

Illinois governor announces cybersecurity plan

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has unveiled a broadbased cybersecurity plan.

The Republican announced the framework Tuesday.

He said cybersecurity is one of the most pressing issues facing the nation and Illinois.

The plan outlines goals to protect state information systems. But it covers only executive branch agencies directly. It wouldn’t have prevented incidents like the cyberattack on Illinois voter data last fall.

Administration officials said they don’t know the final cost of the plan, but that it will come from existing Department of Innovation and Technology resources.

The administration has proposed $900 million for all information technology services in the state’s next budget.

But officials said an additional $250 million was needed to connect agency systems, much of which has already been appropriated. Rauner said a cost-cutting pension overhaul could be one source of funding.

He again criticized Democratic Comptroller Susana Mendoza for halting payments going toward integrating the systems. She said other services should come first.

Gorsuch: No promises and no one above law

WASHINGTON – Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch declared Tuesday that he’s made no promises to Donald Trump or anyone else about how he’ll vote on abortion or other issues and testified he’ll have no trouble as a justice holding anyone accountable, including the president who picked him.

Gorsuch also called Trump’s attacks on federal judges “disheartening” and “demoralizing.”

During the long second day of his Senate confirmation hearings, Gorsuch made two other notable statements in response to questions from members of the Judiciary Committee, and both also related to Trump, who nominated him.

Republican Lindsey Graham of South Carolina asked Gorsuch whether Trump had asked him to overturn Roe v. Wade, the case establishing a right to abortion, and what he would have done had Trump asked him to do so.

“Senator, I would have walked out the door,” Gorsuch replied. “That’s not what judges do.” Later in the day, Gorsuch acknowledged that he and Trump discussed abortion during his Supreme Court interview, but only how divisive an issue it is. Their conversation touched on abortion, Gorsuch said, after Trump bemoaned his loss of Gorsuch’s native Colorado in November.

When Vermont Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy asked Gorsuch whether a president is free to ignore laws on national security grounds, Gorsuch replied that “nobody is above the law in this country, and that includes the president of the United States.”

Some Democratic senators who are not on the Judiciary Committee called for a pause in the confirmation process after FBI Director James Comey said Monday that the bureau is investigating Russian meddling in last year’s election and potential ties between Trump associates and Russia.

Gorsuch likewise wouldn’t comment on litigation over Trump’s efforts to ban travel to the U.S. by people from some mainly Muslim countries. He did, however, say publicly what he had previously told senators in private about Trump’s attacks on judges who ruled against him on that issue.

“When anyone criticizes the honesty and integrity or the motives of a federal judge, I find that disheartening, I find that demoralizing,” he said.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, the Connecticut Democrat, asked, “Including the president?”

“Anyone is anyone,” Gorsuch replied.

As Tuesday’s questioning wore on, senators and Gorsuch engaged in a routine well-established in recent confirmation hearings.

The nominee resists all requests to say how he feels about Supreme Court decisions, even as he is asked about them again and again. Such was the case with questions about rulings on campaign finance, abortion, gun rights, even a privacy ruling from 1965 that John Roberts explicitly endorsed in his confirmation hearing in 2005.

Gorsuch made one exception, describing the two-year-old decision extending same-sex marriage nationwide as “settled law,” a term he did not apply to any other decision.

The ‘real story’ is not the leaks

A House Intelligence Committee hearing Monday produced the remarkable spectacle of FBI Director James Comey publicly testifying there was “no information that supports” tweets by President Donald Trump alleging wiretapping of his New York headquarters on the order of President Barack Obama.

It saw National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers agree with the British government that it was “utterly ridiculous” for the White House to suggest such surveillance had been undertaken by Britain’s signals agency. And it produced official confirmation

by Comey that the agency is investigating Russia’s interference in the U.S. presidential election, including possible coordination with members of the Trump campaign. You’d think that all of this would be of surpassing concern for Republican members of Congress. The president who leads their party has officially been reported to have made false statements alleging criminal activity by his predecessor.

Yet to listen to Republican members of the Intelligence Committee, the most pressing problem to arise from Russia’s intervention and the FBI’s investigation of it is that reports of contacts between Russia’s ambassador and Trump’s designated national security adviser were leaked to The Post. The priority of Chairman Devin Nunes of California and other Republican members, judging from their statements, is not fully uncovering Russia’s actions but finding and punishing those who allowed the public to learn about them.

Nunes and Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., could not have been more zealous in their outrage over the exposure of Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign as national security adviser after reports in The Post exposed his lies about his conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Flynn accepted nearly $68,000 in payments from Russian companies, including the state propaganda outlet, before advocating greater cooperation with Moscow during his brief White House stint.

The Republicans seem to be slavishly following the cues of the president, who, while failing to retract his accusation against Obama, is seeking to direct attention elsewhere.

“The real story that Congress, the FBI and all others should be looking into is the leaking of Classified information,” he tweeted Monday morning. Such a diversion, like anything else that distracts attention from Vladimir Putin’s support for his election, would be to Trump’s advantage.

Congressional Republicans ought to consider larger national interests. Russia’s intervention in the election was not incidental and haphazard, but part of a concerted campaign to disrupt Western democracy.

Given Trump’s refusal to acknowledge the threat, it is essential Congress discover the truth about Russia’s activities, take steps to defend against similar intrusions in the future and help allies protect themselves.

Don’t risk health of the Great Lakes On Thursday, it was revealed the Trump administration’s budget would slash Great Lakes Restoration Initiative funding completely, putting at risk the health of the Great Lakes. Previous information stated the fund would be cut from $300 million to $10 million, but apparently those reports were wrong. The new budget cuts all of the funding.

Clean and healthy Great Lakes are essential not only to the health of millions of people who live around these massive bodies of fresh water, but also the lifeblood to the economies of the entire region. This fund not only helps clean up the Great Lakes throughout the region, but also has major impacts within Northern Michigan.

Jennifer McKay, policy director for the Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, said in a recent story in the Petoskey News-Review, locally the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative has funded a stormwater wetland area at North Central Michigan College, area rain gardens, road-stream crossings to allow rivers to flow naturally and boat

washing stations that prevent invasive species spread are all local examples of projects funded by the program.

And she said currently the council has a grant under the initiative to do research and to combat the spread of zebra and quagga mussels.

According to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative’s map of projects in Michigan, Northern Michigan has seen projects that restore wetlands and habitats, promote nearshore health and projects that combat invasive species as well as one that focused on cleaning up toxics in the Straits area.

And while the funding has significantly helped areas of Northern Michigan, McKay said there are still challenges in the Great Lakes.

These cuts in Trump’s budget proposal will cause irreversible harm to these successful programs that protect and clean the Great Lakes and impact our local communities.

We were pleased to hear that Congressman Jack Bergman seems to understand the damage

such a cut would have on our area and has signed a bipartisan letter to the president calling for the $300 million in funding to remain in place.

In a statement to the Petoskey News-Review earlier this week – when it was believed the initiative’s budget would be cut $300 million to $10 million – he said, “As a Michigander and a member of the Great Lakes Task Force, I believe it’s our duty to be good stewards of our land, water and wildlife ... That’s why I signed a bipartisan letter to the president last month calling for $300 million in funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. I want to protect our Great Lakes..”

But now the cut is even greater than we or Bergman feared.

We urge Bergman to continue this fight for the Great Lakes now and in the future.

The Trump administration has put the health of the Great Lakes and the economies of the Great Lakes states in jeopardy with this budget. It is time for our elected officials to stand up and fight against it.

VIEWS Leonard Pitts “Speaking Truth To Power Since 1847.”

As anti-Trump rhetoric goes, they sure sound a lot like journalistic boilerplate. Makes you wonder if anyone at Fox ran this piece past Shepard Smith. Probably not.

Surely he would have explained to them that these slogans simply celebrate a basic principle of journalism: News media exist to ferret out truth and hold power to account. He might further have reminded them that this is supposed to be the prime directive, even at Fox. He might even have asked: What does it say about that network, about Trump, about how upside down our world has become, when being protruth is decoded as being anti-Trump?

People get awards for defending truth.

They are lionized for it. Indeed, you’ll sometimes hear a journalist boast that

her job is to “report the truth without fear or favor.”

Is that anti-Trump rhetoric, too?

Better question: Does the essential quality of truth change depending upon whom it helps or hurts? Did some of us not get the joke when Stephen Colbert said that “reality has a well-known liberal bias?”

These questions are bigger than Fox, bigger than journalism, bigger, even, than Trump’s pathetic attempt to impersonate a president. They are as big as the country itself. One is reminded of the famous line from “A Few Good Men: “You can’t handle the truth!”

What if that’s right? What if we can’t? What then? You can’t run a democracy this way. Where truth is the enemy, a people cannot be free.

Yet in just the past few days, we’ve had the bizarre spectacle of the socalled president accusing his predecessor of wire-tapping him, based on no evidence whatsoever. Then his press secretary “clarified” by explaining that when Trump said “wire-tapping,” he didn’t mean “wire-tapping.”

Meantime, the attorney general clearly lied under oath. And Russia goes drip, drip, drip.

But someone at Fox thinks we should be up in arms because The Chicago Tribune celebrates journalism?

Unreal.

Wherever Harry Truman went, people used to yell, “Give ’em hell, Harry!” for his blunt way of expressing himself. To which the 33rd president would reply: “I never gave them hell. I just told the truth and they thought it was hell.”

Truman’s quip seems apropos to this standoff between news media and apologists such as those at “Fox & Friends” seeking to normalize Donald Trump. It should be painfully clear by now that they’ve set themselves an impossible mission.

You know you’re in trouble when the truth looks like hell.

Similarly, informed people think that health care is an essential ingredient for good living. Our health care delivery “system” is based upon individual recipient payment for services received supplemented by health care insurance.

The cost of health care is now out of

reach for the overwhelming majority of us; health care insurance policies are beyond the capacity of most of us to understand; it really is both too expensive and complicated.

Congress is now debating how to arrange the provision of health insurance to some people who could not afford insurance, which is the wrong question!

The question should be how to arrange provision of health care for all the people since access to health care is like access to clean water – it is necessary for each individual and for the community as a whole.

We are all healthier when the sneezing person next to us has been to the doctor, children born have had prenatal care and grandparents do not have to choose between medicine and food.

If you think that the provision of health care is like clean water in that your life depends on it, write to your congressional representative and senator.

It is time, once again, to explain journalism to Fox News.

In a way, that’s disappointing. After all, that network’s Shepard Smith has emerged as something of a journalistic hero lately, repeatedly standing up to Donald Trump’s administration for its attempts to undermine and delegitimize the news media. It’s been a stirring performance – and a pleasant surprise to those of us who long ago wrote the network off as just the propaganda arm of the Republican Party.

But Fox is still Fox. For proof, look no further than a peculiar little story that aired last week on “Fox & Friends.”

“Media bias on full display!” chirped the report breathlessly.

“Newspapers now cashing in on T-shirts splashed with anti-President Trump rhetoric!”

So what, you ask, are these terrible anti-Trump slogans?

jseverson@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Michael Mitchell was a seldom-used bench player for the DeKalb boys basketball team during the 2015-16 season.

What a difference a year makes.

Mitchell emerged as a major offensive threat to help the Barbs to their third straight conference title and is the Daily Chronicle 2016-17 Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

“When a kid develops into such a tremendous player in a year, it’s fun to watch that growth from maybe not contributing as much as he’d like as a junior, because we were a senior-laden team, to being a senior, and he took the responsibility of taking the next step,” DeKalb coach Al Biancalana said. “He did that, and not a lot of kids can do that. Not a lot of kids can take on that responsibility. There’s a lot of pressure involved with that, but Michael was always ready for that challenge.”

Mitchell averaged 11.9 points a game this season and led the team in steals while shooting 38 percent from the 3-point line.

If teams were unfamiliar with Mitchell coming into the season, he didn’t take long to force teams to take notice. In the season opener, Mitchell scored 18 points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer just before the buzzer to lead the Barbs to a 53-50 win over Neuqua Valley.

“Just going into the season, a lot of people doubted our talent and questioned what our success level would be,” Mitchell said. “Most of the guys on the team wanted to prove people wrong. After I hit that 3, that kind of compounded things. This season, we have just as good of a chance as last season.”

The 6-foot-2 senior guard admitted that he had to wait his turn as a junior, playing with a senior-heavy Barbs team during the 2015-16 season. As a senior, Mitchell became the offensive threat that Biancalana said could help swing games when he got hot from outside.

In the first round of the Chuck Dayton Classic, Mitchell scored 25 points on 9-for-12 shooting while making six 3-pointers in the Barbs’ 61-40 win over Hampshire.

“He starts the year and nobody knows who he is,” Biancalana said. “Then all of a sudden, they ask, ‘Whoa, who is that guy?’ Then they watch film and say, ‘We

During the Barbs’ 20-2 run in the quarter, Mitchell made four 3-pointers to help lead DeKalb to a 61-40 victory over Glenbard East.

“When you get going, it feels like, ‘OK, this is going to be a pretty good night,’ ” Mitchell said of getting hot from outside. “The defense is going to try to run you off the line as much as they can, so you have to know your other options. I can drive, or my teammates will be open. You’re aware around you that this is good for the whole team – not just good for me.”

Biancalana said that the Barbs’ offense frequently ran around Mitchell’s hot shooting. When he would make a 3-pointer, DeKalb would make a conscious effort to get him a look for anoth-

er – Biancalana said that Mitchell would score 3s “in bunches.” While Mitchell was a strong outside shooter, Biancalana said that the evolution of Mitchell’s game was an improvement in him aggressively attacking the basket in the latter half of the season.

He finished as the Northern Illinois Big 12 East Most Valuable Player, along with all-tournament honors in two of the Barbs’ tournaments this season – the Chuck Dayton Holiday Classic and the Hoops for Healing Thanksgiving Tournament.

In the final game of his career, a 5145 loss to Wheaton North in the regional semifinals, Mitchell finished with 25 points and made back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to get DeKalb back into the game.

“Every big shot we had to make, he took and he made,” Biancalana said. “It seemed like the bigger the game, the bigger the moment, the more we could rely on him.”

Barbs roll past Maroons in opener

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Mallory Warner said she was nervous making her first start of the year for the DeKalb softball team.

Nothing like having a nine-run lead before the other team puts the ball in play to calm the nerves.

Warner struck out the first six Elgin batters and the Barbs scored nine runs in the first two innings Tuesday in an 11-0 win for DeKalb in the season opener for both teams.

“I think I did pretty good for pitching my first game,” Warner said. “I was a little nervous, but I was real excited, so I think I did pretty good. ... It’s

my first time pitching with this team.”

Warner had limited starts as a freshman last year, but is slated to be one of the two main pitchers for the Barbs, who took fourth in Class 4A last year.

She allowed one hit in five innings, and no Elgin player was able to hit the ball out of the infield.

“She did a great job,” DeKalb coach Jeff Davis said. “And as the season goes on and it gets warmer, she and all of our pitchers are going to do a fine job for us. Help keep us in some games.”

Warner also had one of the three DeKalb hits, an RBI single in the first.

She drove in two runs.

DeKalb drew 11 walks and was hit by a pitch, and scored six of its runs on

wild pitches. The Barbs also struck out nine times.

“We took some good strikes we need to be more aggressive at,” Davis said.

“We need to be swinging at those. But it’s Day 1, and we’ll get there.”

Peyton Montgomery was 1 for 2, scoring twice. Davis said he liked what he saw out of his No. 9 hitter.

“More than likely we’re going to throw her in our leadoff spot next game,” Davis said. “We’ll see how she does up there.”

As the season goes on we’ll see tougher competition. We have to just be ready for that.”

Up next: The Barbs are slated to play Wednesday at Jacobs, although with a forecasted high of 32 degrees the game may not be played. They have a game at Belvidere scheduled for Thursday.

Spartans score seven in DeKalb baseball game first inning, beat Rockets suspended in seventh DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Sycamore’s season started with a bang as the Spartans batted around in the first inning en route to a 10-8 win against Burlington Central.

The Spartans (1-0) jumped all over starting pitcher Abby Sanders, chasing her from the game after recording only one out, while scoring seven first-inning runs after giving up three in the top half of the inning.

Anna Criswell led off the inning with a double and was knocked home by Kayleigh Reifsteck, who made a great play to avoid a tag on a rundown at the plate later in the inning.

“It starts with Anna (Criswell) finding a way to hit the ball down the line, and then we talked about how it is contagious. We rolled through our entire batting order,” Sycamore coach Jill Carpenter said.

After another RBI single up the middle by pitcher Ally Versluys, things fell apart for the Rockets with an error and a hit batter, which ended the day for Sanders. Sycamore tacked on another two runs before the inning ended.

“I told them that they are going to come after us,” Burlington Central coach Erica Snyder said. “Last year, we played them in the regional, and it was a fight,” Shortstop Kristina Ahlers started off the scoring for the Rockets (1-1) with a no-doubt solo home run on their way to a three-run first inning, which included two walks and

a two-run single by Lindsey Jamrozek.

Both teams settled down in the second, but the Rockets tied the game in the third inning behind four RBI singles. The Spartans took back the lead in the fourth inning with three runs, including a two-run single from second baseman Mya Lee. After the fourth inning, defense and strong pitching from Versluys shut the door on any comeback attempts. Versluys finished the game with seven strikeouts.

“I had a couple bad innings,” Versluys said, “but as a team we stayed up a lot and that really helps me when I know everyone is behind me.”

By the numbers: Three of Versluys’ seven strikeouts came against Burlington Central’s leadoff hitter Reili Gardner.

Beyond the stats: The Rockets had bases loaded with one out in the fourth inning, but a heads-up play by Spartans catcher Mindy Smits led to a force-out at home and pickoff at second, ending the rally hopes for Burlington Central They said it: “It’s a great feeling. Getting that last out and having everyone come together cheering, it’s just, we are one big family, so once you get that last out, you are doing it for everyone else. It’s just a great feeling,” winning pitcher Ally Versluys said on the throwing the final pitch.

Up next: Sycamore plays at 11 a.m. Saturday at McHenry. Burlington Central hosts West Chicago at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The game was suspended because of darkness, with the Barbs trailing, 9-7, in the seventh inning, but batting with the bases loaded and no outs.

When the game resumes – no makeup date has been set – Charles Roberts will be at the plate with the tying run on second and the goahead run on first.

DeKalb scored first, but the Whip-Purs scored two runs in the second inning to take the lead. After a three-run fifth put DeKalb ahead 4-2, Hampshire scored six in its half of the inning. DeKalb got three more in the top of the sixth to get within 8-7, and Hampshire added a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Matt Searls, Noah Valin and Derek Kyler had two hits each, with Valin driving in two runs. Kyler scored three times.

Cogs fall to Rockford Christian: Genoa-Kingston lost the home game, 11-0. The Cogs gave up seven unearned runs in the loss.

It was Krause who pushed the trade that sent Cy Young pitcher LaMarr Hoyt to San Diego in an eight-player deal that landed Guillen.

“Right now a lot of people are like, ‘Oh my God, I feel bad for him, Oh my God, rest in peace,’ but I don’t believe in those people,’’ Guillen said in a phone interview. “A lot of those people weren’t nice to Jerry, and that wasn’t fair. I am who I am because Jerry Krause took the risk, he gambled and I tried my best to make him look good.

“When you’re going to trade LaMarr Hoyt for Ozzie Guillen, and Tony La Russa is the manager you have to answer to, wow, you’re really putting yourself in jeopardy to lose your job. Trade for this kid that was 20 years old who is a little [bleep], that’s amazing. That’s trust in your ability to know talent.’’

TORONTO – DeMar DeRozan had 42 points, and the Toronto Raptors snapped an 11-game losing streak against the Bulls by rallying for a wild 122-120 overtime win Tuesday night.

DeRozan shot 17 of 38 from the

floor and also collected eight assists.

Cory Joseph had 19 points for the Raptors, and Serge Ibaka scored 16 before he was ejected for his role in a memorable fight with Robin Lopez during the third quarter.

Jimmy Butler had 37 points for the Bulls, and Rajon Rondo finished with 24. It was the Bulls’ first loss to Toron-

to since Dec. 31, 2013.

After a Butler 3-pointer with 3:58 remaining in the third quarter, giving the Bulls a 16-point lead, Lopez swatted the ball out of the hand of Ibaka.

The two squared up in the middle of a crowd and Lopez swung and missed Ibaka, who returned in kind,

barely connecting with the head of the center.

Lopez and Ibaka were ejected after a long review period.

Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic and Raptors assistant coach Jamaal Magloire received offsetting technical fouls after getting into a shoving match after the melee.

TORONTO – Jerry Krause, who was the architect of six NBA championships and turned the Bulls into a worldwide brand, died Tuesday after battling numerous health issues.

He was 77 years old.

A member of the Bulls front office for 18 years, Krause was responsible for surrounding Hall of Famer Michael Jordan with the likes of Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, Toni Kukoc and Dennis Rodman, as well as the hiring of coach Phil Jackson.

“The entire Bulls organization is deeply saddened by the passing of Jerry Krause,’’ chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. “Jerry was one of the hardest-working guys I have ever been around, and he was one of the best talent evaluators ever. Jerry played an integral role in our run of six championships in eight years. He truly was the architect of all our great teams in the ’90s. I would not have been elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame if it were not for Jerry. We will miss him tremendously, and we send our thoughts and prayers to his wife, Thelma, and the Krause family.’’

What made the Krause story even more special was that he was a Chicago native, taking over the basketball operations for the Bulls on March 26, 1985.

Before he had that position with the Bulls, he was a scout with the Baltimore Bullets, Phoenix Suns, Los Angeles Lakers and, previously, the Bulls (1969-71), drafting future Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld.

“I owe a lot to Jerry,’’ VP of basketball operations John Paxson said. “If it weren’t for him bringing me to Chicago in 1985, I probably never would have been a Bull. He had a great eye for talent, and his ability to build a team is unrivaled. He’s one of the best the league has ever seen.’’

It wasn’t just his influence on the Bulls, however, that solidified his place as one of the best talent evaluators in all of sports.

Krause got his start in baseball, and was responsible for the White Sox acquiring the likes of Ozzie Guillen.

That’s what Guillen loved about Krause. He not only was a risk-taker, but stood behind his decisions, despite criticism.

That criticism Guillen brought up became synonymous with Krause, as the Bulls dynasty started to crumble. Jordan and Jackson headlined a long line of critics that took shots at Krause not only professionally, but personally, from the way he spoke to the way he looked.

“It wasn’t fair,’’ Guillen said. “Nobody gave him the credit he should get. To put yourself in two really, really different sports, and have success in both, that’s not easy. When you do that you are successful in life. Watching Jerry in the stands was amazing because he loved baseball. He was the type that would go down to Latin America and spend three, four days just watching Winter Ball. Not too many people did that back then.’’

VP of baseball operations for the White Sox, Ken Williams, shared a similar opinion.

“We talk about his six championships so deservedly you would think he’d have lived long enough to see himself inducted into the Hall of Fame,’’ Williams said, pointing out that Krause still was not part of the Hall. “Hopefully that happens, but it would have been nice for him to see that happen.

But he had a hand in seven championships being that he scouted both Ozzie and myself, and counseled us in the early years of some of the things we had to go through in our general manager, player relationships.

“He’s probably telling his friends up there right now he actually has seven.’’

The Toronto Raptors had a moment of silence before the Tuesday night game with the Bulls, and the Bulls players wore black tape on the left shoulder of their jersey to honor Krause.

According to the team, the plan was to honor Krause for the remainder of the season in some capacity.

“Jerry Krause was a homegrown legend who built a dynasty recognized around the world,’’ Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement. “He will forever be remembered as the architect of one of the most dynamic eras in Chicago sports history, who made the Bulls synonymous with Chicago and brought basketball to the world stage.’’

Krause is survived by his wife, Thelma; his two children, Stacy and David; and, his grandchildren, Colette, Josh, Mia and Riley.

SPORTS BRIEFS White Sox, Anderson agree to $25M, 6-year contract

CHICAGO – The rebuilding White Sox and promising shortstop Tim Anderson agreed Tuesday to a $25 million, six-year contract.

Anderson will receive $850,000 in 2017, $1 million in 2018, $1.4 million in 2019, $4 million in 2020, $7.25 million in 2021 and $9.5 million in 2022. The deal also includes club options of $12.5 million for 2023 and $14 million for 2024. If either is declined, Anderson gets $1 million.

The deal comes on the heels of an encouraging debut last season.

The 23-year-old Anderson, selected 17th overall in the 2013 amateur draft, was promoted in June after Jimmy Rollins was released. He hit .283 with 10 stolen bases, nine homers and 30 RBIs in 99 games. He also struck out 117 times and walked just 13.

Anderson would have been eligible for free agency in 2022, so the contract gives the Sox two more years of control. It also follows a pattern of the team agreeing to club-friendly deals with players before they hit free agency.

They did it with former ace Chris Sale and outfielder Adam Eaton, enhancing their trade value, as well as pitcher Jose Quintana. Sale and Eaton were dealt in

the offseason for prospects that included infielder Yoan Moncada and hard-throwing pitchers Michael Kopech, Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez.

Man named in Brady jersey case sought autographs, selfies

MEXICO CITY – The Mexican media executive suspected of stealing Tom Brady’s jersey went to the Super Bowl as a working journalist but spent the week collecting selfies and autographs from football greats and boasting to colleagues that he was there as a fan.

Mexican journalists who were in Houston for the game and interacted with Martin Mauricio Ortega, former director of the tabloid La Prensa, told The Associated Press that he brought multiple NFL memorabilia items, including a Kurt Warner jersey he hoped to sell to the former quarterback for thousands of dollars.

“When I met him he was carrying a football helmet and he was bragging about having the signatures of former Super Bowl MVPs, and he was a little disappointed that Marshall Faulk refused to sign it,” said Ariel Velazquez, who covered the game for the Mexican daily El Universal.

“He also said that he was not there to work: ‘There are people here to do that.’ ”

Through the first two rounds of this year’s tournament, teams are averaging 74.22 points per game .

If that average is maintained through the next four rounds, it would be the highest tourney scoring average since 1993 (74.31) and a 6.45-point per team increase over the 2015 average (67.77 ppg).

Last year, the first with the new shot clock, teams averaged 71.85 points in tourney play.

“I like it,” said Michigan coach John Beilein, whose head coaching career began before the shot clock or the 3-point line existed in college.

“I think it would be very hard to play if you didn’t have shooters, though, because everybody would plug in there, and you wouldn’t have anybody open.”

High-scoring offenses are only part of the equation.

Pitino believes defenses are starting to add NBA staples, too.

Instead of using traps and pressure to force turnovers, he said, many teams are simply trying to take precious seconds off the shot clock with “soft pressure,” a notion he advocated during two stints as an NBA coach.

INDIANAPOLIS – Rick Pitino watched in amazement as the Michigan Wolverines made 11 second-half 3-pointers, many from well beyond the arc.

The first comparison that came to mind was the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.

“The amazing thing to me is you look at the size of the players that Michigan has, and they shoot it like backcourt players. That’s what’s really coming on,” Pitino said last weekend in Indianapolis, where the Cardinals were eliminated by Michigan.

“I made a concentrated effort this past year in our recruiting to recruit bigs who could shoot because we don’t have bigs who can shoot now.”

Pitino can find the NBA’s influence on just about any college game.

The shot clock has been shortened, the 3-pointer has been embraced and everyone from 5-foot-6 Keon Johnson of Winthrop to 6-foot-10 Moe Wagner of Michigan seems comfortable shooting from long range.

Scoring is up, defenses are being

stretched thin and coaches are trying to adapt to change by recruiting bigger, better shooters and fewer true centers.

College basketball has its own version of small ball going these days.

The Wolverines are not small by any means, but all five starters and each of their top six scorers are capable 3-point shooters.

Disbelievers can watch Friday’s 9291, first-round victory over Oklahoma State, the game that caught Pitino’s attention.

The Cardinals did a solid job in Sunday’s second-round game giving up only six 3s, though Wagner’s deep shot helped send Michigan to the Sweet 16 for Thursday’s Midwest Regional showdown against Oregon.

Style is only part of the ongoing change.

Two years ago, the NCAA approved a 30-second shot clock and followed the NBA’s lead by using timeouts called within close proximity of a media timeout as the scheduled stop. It also stripped a second-half timeout from teams.

The numbers reveal just how much and how fast things have changed.

Not a lumberjack? You still can eat a filling breakfast

I am a morning person (by choice, not nature, but that’s a story for another time) and breakfast is my favorite meal of the day.

Strong coffee and a hearty morning meal make me feel like I’m on vacation, luxuriating in hashedbrown-and-bacon heaven, without a health or calorie care in the world.

Breakfast menus at truck stops and diners have incredible appeal to a closeted lumberjack like me, with words like grand-slam and breakfast skillet promising a meal that will fill me up for most of the day.

But, eating like a lumberjack when you have a desk job makes no sense, unless you really are on vacation.

For a more quotidian option, try my Country-Style Skillet Breakfast.

I use just a few strips of real pork bacon to keep things feeling authentically diner-ish. Onions, sweet yellow

peppers, spinach and garlic all add a ton of flavor (and nutrients) but hardly any calories.

The real nutrient and calorie-saving workhorse of this recipe, though, is: cauliflower.

I swap out the breakfast-skillet staple hashed browns for riced cauliflower. It works beautifully, and not only do you save the calories of the potatoes, but all the extra fat you need to make those hashed browns crispy and tasty.

You can find riced cauliflower in most neighborhood grocery stores these days, either in the packaged produce aisle or the freezer. Or, simply pulse up a bunch of cauliflower florets in a food processor until it is cut into rice-sized pieces. The cauliflower is just bland enough it takes on the flavors of the rest of the ingredients and provides enough heft to house eggs broken right into the skillet. The result is rustic, gorgeous and filling.

Country-Style Cauliflower Breakfast Skillet Start to finish: 25 minutes Servings: 4

3 slices of bacon, cut into small pieces 1/2 yellow or sweet onion, chopped (about 1 cup) 1/2 yellow bell pepper, chopped (about 1/2 cup) 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon dried herbes de provence (or dried oregano or thyme) 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 3 cup cauliflower rice (raw) 1 tablespoon lemon juice 10 ounce frozen chopped spinach, thawed and excess moisture gently squeezed out 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper Chopped parsley, for garnish 4 eggs, cracked into 4 small ramekins or bowls

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In large oven-safe skillet, cook bacon over medium low heat until starting to crisp, about 5 minutes.

Add onion and bell pepper and cook until tender, about 6 minutes. Add the minced garlic, herbs and smoked paprika and stir.

Add the cauliflower and cook until tender, about 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Add the lemon juice, stir, and then the spinach, and stir until well-combined. Remove from heat and sprinkle the cheese evenly over the mixture.

Gently make four wells in the mixture with a wooden spoon. Spray each well with nonstick spray. Pour one egg into each well.

Bake until eggs are done, about 7-8 minutes for runny yolk, longer for firmer yolk. Sprinkle with black pepper, more salt if needed, parsley and serve.

Nutrition information per serving: 219 calories; 117 calories from fat; 13 g fat (5 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 235 mg cholesterol; 804 mg sodium; 11 g carbohydrate; 3 g fiber; 4 g sugar; 15 g protein.

Like many families, we try to minimize the amount of processed sugar we eat. But, it is lurking everywhere, and we are eating far more processed sugar than our grandparents did. How to combat this trend that seems to have sneaked up on us? My banana oat morning mini-muffins don’t use any white processed sugar, and yet are just sweet enough to scratch the sweettooth itch. I usually bake a batch or two and freeze them for a quick breakfast or snack on-on-the-go. They’re small so they thaw in minutes.

Banana Oat Breakfast Mini-Muffins Servings: 26 muffins Start to finish: 40 minutes

1/2 cup (gently packed) pitted dates 2 tablespoons coconut oil (or other oil or butter) 2 medium bananas, ripe, roughly chopped 2 eggs, room temperature 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1¼ cups rolled oats (gluten-free, if making gluten-free) 3/4 cup almond flour

1½ teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt Heat the oven to 350 degrees F. Mix the wet ingredients: Place the dates in a small bowl and pour 1/2 cup boiling water on them and let them sit for 5 minutes to soften.

Once soft, pour off the excess water (do not drain; leave them very wet), and use a fork to smash the dates gently into a loose paste. In a stand mixer using the whisk attachment (or hand mixer), mix the date paste, coconut oil and bananas on medium high speed until soft and creamy, about 2 minutes.

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing after each one, and add the vanilla. Prepare the dry ingredients: Place the oats in a dry blender or food processor and pulse until oats become a coarse powder. Pour into a bowl and add almond flour, baking powder and soda, cinnamon and salt and whisk to mix. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients half at a time, mixing after each addition. If the dough becomes too thick for the whisk attachment, fold in using a rubber spatula.

Use a small ice-cream scoop or a tablespoon to scoop dough into a mini-muffin pan fitted with paper liners. Bake until muffins spring back to the touch, about 17-20 minutes.

DAILY CHRONICLE The DeKalb High School Eco-Buds club is conducting a 30-day athletic shoe drive to raise funds for Hope Haven, Safe Passage and the family of Ata Shakir, a high school teacher battling cancer.

These organizations will earn funds based on the total weight of the athletic shoes collected, as Sneakers4Funds will purchase all of the donated footwear.

Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new athletic shoes at DeKalb High School. The club would like as many groups as possible to fill a bag of 15 pair of sneakers and drop it off at DHS, Kishwaukee Valley YMCA, Fitworkz or Anytime Fitness. Their goal is to collect 167 bags.

All donated athletic shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Sneakers4Funds network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Sneakers4Funds helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and around the world. These micro-entrepreneurs sell the athletic shoes to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even

St. Mary’s Stars celebrate win

Christine Kyler has joined the Kishwaukee College Foundation as the development coordinator. She assumed her new position March 1.

Kyler comes to Kishwaukee after serving in the local community in a variety of roles, both professionally and as a volunteer. She came to Kishwaukee from the Law Offices of Klein, Stoddard, Buck and Lewis, where she had been a legal assistant. Christine She previously worked as Kyler a legal assistant for attorney Tom Dougherty, been a Realtor, and served as a youth program coordinator with the Rockford Diocese.

In addition, she has extensive volunteer experience that has affected people in the communities, including involvement with such diverse organizations as Little Brothers/Friends of the Elderly and the original Hope Haven Homeless Shelter (PADS) in DeKalb, Opportunity House and Feed My Starving Children.

“I have always been drawn to positions that involve pulling resources together and networking,” she said in a news release. “I also firmly believe in paying it forward – it is something instilled in me by my family. Kishwaukee College has been so important to me, my family and my surrounding community.

I’m delighted to be a part of the team.”

Carpal tunnel usually treatable Dear Doctor: Sometimes when I awake from a good sleep, one of my hands is asleep, and I have to shake or massage it back to normalcy. It’s usually my thumb and the two fingers next to it. Is this normal?

Dear Reader: No, this is not normal.

Your symptoms are typical of carpal tunnel syndrome, which occurs because of a compression of the median nerve at the wrist. The median nerve provides sensation to the thumb, index and middle fingers. It also supplies the muscles that control the thumb and the smaller muscles that control the index and middle fingers.

The median nerve is in real cramped quarters as it makes its way through the wrist. As you look at the palm surface of your hand and move your eyes toward your wrist you can see multiple tendons. The median nerve has to share room with nine of these tendons that are within the carpal tunnel. When there is inflammation in the wrist, or the tendons become inflamed, the median nerve gets compressed.

The first symptoms often are noted during sleep, when we have a tendency to flex the wrists, so that our hands curl.

This flexion of the wrists causes greater compression of the median nerve, which leads to the sensation of tingling in the thumb and the index and middle fingers, as if your hands are falling asleep.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is very common and can be caused by repetitive work involving recurrent compression on the median nerve. Studies have been mixed as to the type of work that can cause this. One study showed that recurrent use of a computer mouse was associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, but there has been no consistent associa-

Women are more likely to have carpal tunnel syndrome than are men. The rate is 5 percent in the general population, but women have rates ranging from 7 percent to 18 percent. One study, published in Environmental Research, for example, found a greater rate of carpal tunnel syndrome in female butchers and meat cutters.

Diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and hypothyroidism are diseases that are associated with an increased risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.

As for a diagnosis, that can be done through a physical exam or through a nerve conduction study.

For starters, I would consult your doctor. If he or she diagnoses carpal tunnel syndrome, wearing a wrist brace at night would be the likely recommendation.

Whether rigid or of a softer variety, wrist braces help because they don’t allow the wrist to curl when you’re sleeping. In addition, a physical therapist can teach stretches and range of motion exercises that can ease symptoms.

Finally, pay attention to signs of weakness in the hand. This would be noticed mostly in the use of the thumb, such as if you start dropping keys or begin having difficulty holding a cup. These signs suggest additional treatment, such as surgery, may be needed.

In today’s deal, South was in three notrump, and West led the heart eight.

What should have happened after that?

South did not like to overcall one no-trump with that heart holding. He was worried that partner might hold queen-doubleton, which would have provided a second stopper if North were the declarer. But nothing would have more accurately described the nature and strength of South’s hand.

Declarer started with seven top tricks. Since only 12 high-card points were missing, the club finesse was bound to provide an eighth winner, but since the diamond finesse was doomed, from where would trick nine come?

South ducked the first trick and took the second to learn the heart break. Then he cashed his six blacksuit tricks with the aid of the club finesse. East followed throughout in clubs and cleverly discarded the diamond jack(!) on the third spade. He was hoping declarer would believe that he had blanked the diamond king. However, South knew that 2-53-3 distribution was more likely than 2-5-2-4 and decided to let East get into the newspapers if he’d had the courage to pitch a diamond from a doubleton.

Declarer exited with his last heart.

As he hoped, at trick 12, East had to lead away from the diamond king into dummy’s ace-queen.

Meet the Webster family

Tim and Cindy Webster made their home in DeKalb county when they attended NIU many years ago.

Music has always been a part of their family family.

When their oldest son was able to sing tenor, and the oldest daughter was willing to sing alto, they began singing in 4-part harmony. Over the past eight years they have enjoyed singing both spiritual and patriotic hymns as well as other acapella arrangements performed by the Gaither Vocal Band, GLAD, and Pentatonix. They perform regularly at six area nursing homes. Additionally, they have sung at anniversary and birthday parties, church services and funerals.
