bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Randall Coffland had talked to his wife about killing his daughters in the past, and about killing himself the same day he took his own life and those of the girls, according to police reports released through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Coffland carried through on his March 10 threat, first shooting his twin daughters, Brittany and Tiffany Coffland, both 16, in the head; then shooting his wife in the legs; and finally shooting himself in the head, at 450 S. First St., Apt. 406, reports stated.

Coffland and his wife were living apart in St. Charles, reports stated.

Coffland visited his wife, Anjum Coffland, at her residence March 9, and relayed that he wanted them to get back together, but she told him she wanted a divorce, reports stated.

On March 10, he called his wife and said he was going to kill himself, and asked that she come to his place, reports stated. Randall Coffland had made comments about killing the girls in the past, according to reports, but his wife had never taken them seriously. She came into the kitchen and found Randall Coffland pointing a gun at her. He said the girls were

already dead. He told her he wanted her to survive, so she could live with the situation the rest of her life, and he shot her.

Anjum Coffland ran into a bedroom and locked the door, according to reports. The girls were found in separate rooms covered with blankets, and Randall Coffland was found facedown in water in a bathtub, with a cellphone on the edge of the tub dialed to 911.

The girls visitation and funeral were held March 17.

Financial assistance for Anjum Coffland has been set up by her neighbor on a YouCaring site for medical and funeral expenses at www.youcaring.com/anjumcoffland-775004, and now has been turned over to the family, Deputy Police Chief David Kintz stated in an email.

A GoFundMe account was created by a friend, Kathleen Panek-Rickerson, and her daughter at www.gofundme.com/help-stcharles-mother. That account also has been confirmed and turned over to the family, Kintz stated.

Another fundraiser has been organized for Thursday at Colonial Cafe, 552 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, where the restaurant will donate up to 20 percent of net sales to assist Anjum Coffland.

WASHINGTON – Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch pledged to be independent or “hang up the robe” as the U.S. Senate began rancorous hearings Monday on President Donald Trump’s conservative pick to fill a Supreme Court seat that has been vacant for more than a year.

Gorsuch sought to take the edge off Democratic complaints that he has favored the wealthy and powerful in more than 10 years as a federal judge. The 49-year-old Coloradan told the Senate Judiciary Committee he has tried to be a “neutral and independent” judge and has ruled both for and against disabled students, prisoners and workers alleging civil rights violations.

“But my decisions have never reflected a judgment about the people before me, only my best judgment about the law and facts at issue in each particular case,” Gorsuch said. That was

his opening statement a day ahead of expected pointed questioning from committee Democrats.

A Supreme Court confirmation hearing is a major occasion on Capitol Hill – the last one was in 2010 – but Monday’s was overshadowed by a separate event in the Capitol complex. On the House side, FBI Director James Comey was testifying that the bureau is investigating Russian meddling in last year’s election and possible links and coordination between Russia and associates of Trump.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., repeated a comment

by White House chief of staff Reince Priebus last month that Gorsuch “represents the type of judge that has the vision of Donald Trump.”

“I want to hear from you why Mr. Priebus would say that,” Durbin said to Gorsuch. “Most Americans question whether we need a Supreme Court justice with the vision of Donald Trump.”

County turnout subdued as 4 new polling places open Monday

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Election judge John Horn of Sycamore, who was monitoring early voting at Northern Illinois University’s Holmes Student Center, said only three people had cast votes by 10:30 a.m. Monday, which wasn’t uncommon for a local election.

In contrast, Horn said the site was really busy during the presidential election in November.

“We were open an hour and a half after the polls closed for the presidential election just to complete all of the paperwork,” Horn said.

With only two weeks until Election Day, early voting sites will be available in five locations across DeKalb County in the days before the election.

The Blackhawk Annex of the Holmes Student Center at Northern Illinois University, the DeKalb Township Building at 2323 S. Fourth St., Kirkland Village Hall at 511 W. Main St. and the Sandwich Fire Station at 310 E. Railroad St., all opened Monday for early and grace-period voting.

The DeKalb County Legislative Center’s Gathertorium on 200 N. Main St. in Sycamore, which opened in February, also is still open. All five will be open every day through April 2, with three sites open daily through Election Day. Grace-period voting is for people who haven’t yet registered to vote.

Those taking part in grace-period voting must cast their ballot the same day they register.

Voters can check the registration status on the county election website.

Regular voter registration expired earlier this month.

About 450 DeKalb County residents had voted early as of Monday afternoon, including 18 at Kirkland’s Village Hall, DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson said.

One of these early voters was Village President Les Bellah, who will be stepping down from his position after 30 years as a village board member. Bellah will be replaced by either Ryan Block, Wanda McMurray or Harry Newberry, all of whom are on the ballot.

“I have a bunch of friends on the ballot and it just makes things a whole lot easier to vote,” Kasallis said.

At the Holmes Student Center, only one additional person cast a ballot Monday.

Another 12 people cast their votes at the DeKalb Township Building, 14 people voted at the Sandwich Fire Station and 395 people had voted at the Gathertorium, which has been open for early voting since Feb. 23.

Less than 8 percent of registered voters cast their ballots for the 2015 consolidated election, 22 percent cast their vote in the 2013 election and 12 percent voted in 2011.

April 2 will be the last day to vote early at the Kirkland and Sandwich sites, and April 3, the day before the election, will be the last day to vote early at the Sycamore, DeKalb Township and NIU sites.

Sycamore City Council approves Meijer plans

SYCAMORE – The Sycamore City Council unanimously approved plans Monday to develop a 193,000-squarefoot Meijer supercenter in Sycamore.

A Meijer store and its gas station are planned for the Sycamore Crossings subdivision at the northwest corner of DeKalb Avenue and Peace Road, which the city annexed in 2006.

The council voted, 7-0, Monday to approve the development by First Midwest Group of Rockford. Fourth Ward Alderman Rick Kramer was absent.

Sycamore Crossings includes about 65 acres zoned for commercial use and 17 acres zoned residential, with most of the houses along Anjali Court.

Meijer Stores Limited Partnership purchased about 18 acres of land in Sycamore Crossings for the development.

The project also plans for a 6-foot fence and row of trees behind the store as a barrier to the residences along Anjali Court.

City Manager Brian Gregory said the plan calls for 688 parking spots, which does not meet city code for a single store but meets the requirement when considering the potential 400,000 square feet of future commercial development.

“We felt comfortable after talking to Meijer that they built a very similarly situated store not too far from here, and that parking requirement has satisfied their needs,” Gregory said.

Mayor Ken Mundy said construc-

tion on the Meijer development is expected to begin in spring 2018, with the goal of having the store open in 2019.

Concerns were raised during a Planning Commission hearing last week about the Meijer potentially drawing customers from local grocery stores.

Mundy said he expects the Meijer to bring in customers from beyond the DeKalb/Sycamore area, and he does not believe other stores will be in danger from the competition.

“We heard the same thing when Jewel came, and we heard the same thing when Hy-Vee came,” he said.

“There will be some transfer of sales, no doubt, from one store to the other, but we believe the area can support this store. And frankly, the consumer wins the more competition there is.”

Steve Kapitan, a DeKalb resident, addressed the council Monday and asked whether the proposed intersection could be moved to provide a Peace Road access point for the property across from Sycamore Crossings, making it more appealing for future development.

City Engineer Mark Bushnell said the DeKalb County Board would not approve a full access point to Peace Road that close to Route 23.

DeKALB – The DeKalb School District 428 board will consider bids for a $1 million-plus project to replace the boiler system at Lincoln Elementary School and install a chiller.

Advertisements to bid were sent to 10 contractors.

Of those, five provided a range of pricing.

Three contractors then attended the bid opening, which took place last month.

DeKalb Mechanical came in with the lowest responsible bid of $1,134,000, which is $20,800 over budget of the estimated cost.

The project also includes an asbestos removal plan.

Indiana-based Environmental Assurance was the lowest bidder for that part of the project at $33,744, well below the projected cost of $122,000. This estimate was based on a cost estimate

of $968,000 from 2014 with a 15 percent cost escalation.

Board members will review the proposals at their meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Education Center, 901 S. Fourth St. Funding will come from $900,000 from life-safety budget and $464,863 from the operations and maintenance budget, according to district documents.

Lincoln Elementary is the only District 428 school without an air-conditioning system, which led to classes being dismissed during a heat wave in the fall semester.

Approval will also be sought for bids from Dunlap-based Commercial Mechanical Inc. totaling $547,000 to install air-conditioning units at Huntley Middle School and from DeKalb-based One Source Mechanical for $347,400 to replace heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment at Clinton Rosette Middle School.

DeKalb middle-schoolers ‘kick butts’

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Macy Stach, a seventh-grader at Clinton Rosette Middle School, was one of the 26 students Monday at Hopkins Park picking up almost 1,700 cigarette butts and other related litter as part of National Kick Butts Day to discourage tobacco use.

“I think it’s not only a good cause, but it’s a good experience to go outside, pick up these butts and and be more intertwined with the community,” Macy said.

“I have family members that used to smoke. My dad eventually quit, so hopefully I can keep others from smoking.”

National Kick Butts Day was Wednesday, but because of snowfall, the cleanup effort was rescheduled to Monday.

Students who took part in the cleanup are part of “Reality Illinois,” a grant-funded program coordinated by the DeKalb County Health Department to involve youth with local government to promote tobacco-related policies.

Health department promotions coordinator Melissa Edwards said the program started at the high school level, but because of a lack of interest, attention shifted to middle-schoolers.

“We wanted to start at middle school to gain their interest early on,” Edwards said. “Kids are fascinated and they always find a lot, which unfortunately shows that a lot of people are smoking.”

Eighth-grader Jakyla Rogers said she has a family member who still smokes despite a doctor advising them that the next cigarette they smoke could be fatal, which is one of the reasons she has volunteered for the past two years and is against smoking.

Anti-abortion doctor, centers sue over Illinois health law

SPRINGFIELD – An anti-abortion physician and two pregnancy help centers have filed a lawsuit alleging an Illinois law requiring them to discuss abortion with patients is unconstitutional.

FBI confirms probe of Trump-Russia links

WASHINGTON – The FBI is investigating whether Donald Trump’s associates coordinated with Russian officials in an effort to sway the 2016 presidential election, Director James Comey said Monday in an extraordinary public confirmation of a probe the president has refused to acknowledge, dismissed as fake news and blamed on Democrats.

In a bruising five-hour session, the FBI director also knocked down Trump’s claim that his predecessor had wiretapped his New York skyscraper, an assertion that has distracted White House officials and frustrated fellow Republicans who acknowledge they’ve seen no evidence to support it.

The revelation of the investigation of possible collusion with Russians, and the first public confirmation of the wider probe that began last summer, came in a remarkable hearing by one branch of government examining serious allegations against another branch and the new president’s election campaign.

Tight-lipped for the most part, Comey refused to offer details on the scope, targets or timeline for the FBI investigation, which could shadow the White House for months, if not years. The director would not say whether the probe has turned up evidence that Trump associates may have schemed with Russians during a campaign marked by email hacking that investigators believe was aimed at helping the Republican defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton.

“I can promise you,” the FBI director vowed, “we will follow the facts wherever they lead.”

Comey would not commit to a timetable.

Regardless of the outcome, the investigation is unquestionably an unwelcome distraction for an administration that has struggled to move past questions about ties to Russia. The White House tried anew Monday to distance itself from two former senior members of Trump’s team, Paul Manafort and Michael Flynn, who have been under scrutiny for foreign contacts.

DeKalb pastor preparing to open soul food restaurant in Sycamore

SYCAMORE – Jerry Wright said he wants Betty Jean’s Soul Food to be a place where people can “get some good food quick,” enjoy camaraderie and remember some of their favorite meals from childhood.

“I hope to add some things that people may have grown up on but haven’t had in a while,” Wright said.

“I hope my cooking game is a step above theirs at home, so they can come out and have a semi-gourmet meal very quickly.”

Wright, a pastor at The Rock Christian Church in DeKalb, said he plans to have Betty Jean’s Soul Food open at 630 Plaza Drive in Sycamore within the next few weeks.

He said the process of starting his first restaurant has taken longer than expected, but he expects Betty Jean’s will be ready for business once the last piece of the kitchen is installed and the restaurant passes inspections.

Wright said he always felt cooking was therapeutic, from the time he cooked with his mother and grandmother as a child to cooking for his own nine children as an adult.

“Growing up, cooking with my mother and my grandmother was always a way we shared time together,” he said. “I would cut onions, peppers, pickles, whatever it was, and I was their sous chef.”

Wright said he worked in catering for about 13 years, and he began thinking about starting a restaurant after hearing positive feedback from his soul food catering for a Kwanzaa event at Northern Illinois University. He also won first place for his catfish and banana pudding entries in the 50 Men Who Cook fundraiser and began to consider the idea more seriously, he said.

The restaurant takes its name from Wright’s late mother. He said he remembers trying to name all of the ingredients in a recipe while eating meals with his mother.

Side dishes such as mac and cheese, corn bread, collard greens and candied yams also will be on the menu, and some specials may be added to the main menu based on popularity, Wright said.

“Soul food is food for the soul; it’s food that makes you feel good about just eating,” he said. “You ain’t thinking about how many pounds that put on you; you’re just thinking that made me feel great.”

DAILY CHRONICLE SYCAMORE – Whimsical Perspective, a new store in downtown Sycamore, will open its doors Thursday.

The shop is located in the Opera House building at 366 W. State St. on the corner of California and State streets.

The building has historic roots in the city, built in 1840 and turned into a hotel in 1872, then sold and converted into the Ward Opera House in 1879.

It has been home to various retailers since the 1940s, but has sat vacant since 1987.

Bright has been posting

on a blog of the same name for the past six years, featuring painted furniture pieces, DIY home décor and design, which will serve as inspiration for

the store.

“I love having one-of-akind pieces in my home that no one else has. No one else’s home looks like mine, and I want other people to have that feeling,” Bright said in a news release.

Whimsical Perspective will feature exclusive, original pieces by local and American artisans.

“I want to be proud to tell you where our pieces come from,” she said in the release.

“I want you to know that I got this from an artist in Virginia who made it by hand, or I got this from my friend who I

know from the flea market.”

In the coming months, Bright plans to add original artifacts and architectural details in the store to pay homage to the building’s history.

Whimsical Perspective’s spring hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays. Bright, who also is a local teacher, will extend the store’s hours in the summer.

I began the master’s program in educational leadership at NIU in the winter of 2015 during my first year teaching Spanish. Since then, I have started my current position as dean of students at DeKalb High School and will graduate from NIU in December. The skills-based immigration policy America needs

Occasionally, President Donald Trump tweets something worthwhile. Such was the case earlier this month when he praised the skills-based immigration systems of Canada and Australia.

Canada, which in 1967 became the first nation to use a points system, grades applicants to its Federal Skilled Worker Program on six factors: work experience, education, language ability, age, arranged employment and a more subjective measure of “adaptability.” To be eligible for a permanent resident visa, an applicant must accumulate enough points in the various categories to “pass.”

The result is that about 60 percent of permanent residents admitted to Canada are admitted for economic reasons. It’s no mystery why. Studies show that skilled immigrants increase productivity, create jobs and spark entrepreneurship.

One-quarter of technology and engineering firms established in the U.S. between 1995 and 2005 had at least one immigrant founder. U.S. immigrants are responsible for a disproportionately high number of international patent applications. Roughly 40 percent of Indian immigrants to the U.S., for example, have a graduate degree, almost four times the rate of native-born Americans.

U.S. immigration law currently values family ties over skills. A points system similar to Canada’s would reverse that preference. Republican Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and David Perdue of Georgia have introduced legislation to accomplish such a switch, scaling back family-based migration to the spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents.

But the bill would also drastically reduce immigration overall. It would end the 50,000 annual “diversity visas,” a lottery system that admits immigrants from countries with historically low rates of immigration, and it would cap green cards for refugees at 50,000. Its sponsors’ aim is to reduce immigration by 50 percent in 10 years – to about 540,000 annually.

The question of whether unskilled immigration suppresses wages at the low end of the labor market is much in dispute. Meanwhile, the H-1B program for temporary work visas has been subject to fraud and abuse, and often hurts mid-level U.S. employees, some of whom have trained their own replacements.

By contrast, there is little question of the benefits of highly skilled immigrants. Even if a flood of such immigrants – and no one is recommending an open invitation – slightly depressed wages for people with Ph.D.s in science and technology, the result would be a gentle corrective to four decades of rising inequality based largely on skills.

The Great Barrier Reef is dying

The measured warming of the planet is not hypothetical. Nor are its effects, which are happening now, not decades from now. An ecological catastrophe is unfolding off Australia’s coast: Humans are killing the Great Barrier Reef, one of the world’s greatest natural wonders, and there’s nothing Australians on their own can do about it. We are all responsible.

An ocean water temperature spike last year caused a massive “bleaching” event, in which colorful corals turned an antiseptic, sickly white. Scientists believe that the reef will never be the same.

“The chances of the northern Great Barrier Reef returning to its pre-bleaching assemblage structure are slim given the scale of damage that occurred in 2016 and the likelihood of a fourth bleaching event occurring within the next decade or two as global temperatures continue to rise,”a major new study in the journal Nature reported last week.

Alarmingly, but perhaps not surprisingly, the Australian government reports that sections of the reef are getting slammed again this year.

Corals are polyp creatures that build their iconic limestone

structures in cooperation with photosynthesizing algae. When ocean temperatures increase, the algae emit poisons. The corals then reject their symbiotic partners and succumb to disease and death. This occurred across a vast section of the northern Great Barrier Reef last year.

Under normal conditions, corals can often recover from big bleaching shocks, but conditions are no longer normal. Higher background ocean temperatures mean that dangerous spikes are more likely. Corals decades of years old may be replaced by “weedier,” faster-growing species – or by none at all.

There is little doubt that temperature is the culprit. Reefs far away from human runoff and other local risks are suffering.

Corals in pristine water bleached just like those in dirty water. The Nature study quantified a relationship between exposure to warm water and the severity of observed bleaching.

“Immediate global action to curb future warming is essential to secure a future for coral reefs,” the study warned. “Water quality and fishing pressure had minimal effect on the unprecedented bleaching in 2016, suggesting that

local protection of reefs affords little or no resistance to extreme heat. Similarly, past exposure to bleaching in 1998 and 2002 did not lessen the severity of bleaching in 2016.”

Also last week, the Trump administration proposed deep cuts for the Environmental Protection Agency, singling out climate programs, as well as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which monitors Earth’s seas and skies. President Donald Trump also began what will no doubt be a broad rollback of Obama administration climate rules. Meanwhile, the president is still thinking about pulling the country out of the landmark Paris climate deal, which took decades to strike. The administration has offered no sense that it has any alternative emissions-cutting strategy in mind.

In the long run, the planet will change enough – hurting enough people in the process – that even Republicans will have to admit the issue must be addressed. The question is what price the nation and the world will pay, in dollars, lives and ecological catastrophe, because our leaders were negligent in the meantime.

Can I prove that they’re doing so because of perceptions that regulations and taxes will be decreased by the Trump administration? No, and I’m not sure any economist’s statistical model could, either. But it sure looks as if that’s what’s happening.

Big players in the financial markets seem to think so. Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen suggested the Fed will raise interest rates twice more this year after doing so twice in the past three months. That’s a significant shift from her long-standing reluctance to increase rates at all for fear of dampening the economy.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said March 10 that Trump’s agenda of cutting corporate taxes, building infrastructure and rolling back regulations has unleashed the “animal spirits” – economist John Maynard Keynes’ phrase – of businesspeople.

“Even if he gets (just) part of it done,” Dimon, a Democrat and Hillary Clinton contributor, told Bloomberg, “it’ll be good for growth.”

Does the unusual speed with which Speaker Paul Ryan is leading the House to vote on the first of three

promised initiatives to repeal and replace Obamacare suggest that he and Trump are trying to strengthen the perception that the private-sector economy will boom? Given the significant risk of political damage and policy bungle, it certainly looks as if the answer is yes.

People at the high end of the income spectrum – a category that obviously includes the bulk of job creators – are not the only ones making decisions in response to perceptions.

So, it appears, are undocumented immigrants and people deciding whether to cross the border illegally.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported that apprehensions of people who crossed the southern border illegally in February were down 39 percent from January and down 36 percent from February 2016.

They were also lower than the border crossings in December – traditionally by far the lowest month – in the years 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012.

That’s a startling drop. And it’s one that seems likely to reverberate far beyond Mexico, seeing as most people who have crossed the border illegally since the Great Recession have come from Central America.

Under Obama administration policy, Central American children (or adults claiming to be younger than 18) seeking asylum were mostly allowed to remain in the U.S., effectively free

of border enforcement.

Trump’s executive orders on immigration law enforcement have created the perception, probably accurately, that that policy has changed.

That message has apparently been delivered to people hundreds or even thousands of miles south of the Rio Grande.

Of course, perceptions can change.

Perceptions of an incoming president’s likely policies can shape the behavior of many; perceptions of an outgoing president’s policies, not so much.

As a president’s term goes on, perceptions of a president’s policies are replaced by the realities of actual policies, and perceptions of likely effects are modified by conditions on the ground. The wisdom of crowds is not always spot on.

But it’s sometimes superior to the wisdom of experts. Most experts predicted that Britain’s vote for Brexit and America’s for Trump would crater those countries’ respective economies.

That hasn’t happened yet – and most people seem to perceive it won’t.

Board should not renew Baker’s contract at NIU

To the Editor: I am disappointed in the Faculty Sen-

ate’s hesitation to vote “no confidence” in President Doug Baker’s leadership at Northern Illinois University.

I’ve been reading about the scandals surrounding him for the past year and a half, have had plenty of time to understand the material, and I must say that I believe Baker has a consistent disregard for policies and the law.

I understand the concern some faculty have in damaging the reputation of the university, but the scandals themselves have already done that.

A Daily Chronicle article from Dec. 18, 2015, reports that a memo to Baker from the board of trustees Chairman John Butler said, ”We want to be clear that we are approving financial support for representation only for the ongoing OEIG investigation. Yet an invoice obtained through a FOIA request by Michael Haji-Sheikh shows that work was performed by Baker’s attorneys on the response to the Faculty Senate’s questions.”

Even with their assistance, these

responses don’t sound like the kind you would expect to hear from someone who has made honest mistakes and is taking responsibility for them; they sound more like the kind you would hear from someone who is making nonadmissions of fault and obfuscating the truth.

And at a time when students are increasingly facing food insecurity and homelessness, both of which I have had the misfortune of experiencing firsthand, the last thing that a university needs is an expense for a legal defense.

Personally, after having numerous staff abuse their power at my detriment, it is my belief that NIU is a broken institution and I have ended my educational career at it. Until the board of trustees fixes the administration, starting by terminating Baker’s contract as soon as possible, I am adamantly refusing to give NIU another cent.

Perceptions matter. People make decisions, even life-altering decisions, based on what they perceive as likely to happen. To the extent that public policy affects such decisions, the perception of likely policy change can affect behavior even before the change happens – even if it ends up never happening.

Something like that seems to be happening in America – and around the world. In the two months since Donald Trump was inaugurated as president, people have been making decisions based on perceptions of how he may change the country’s direction.

Take the economy. The numbers in the jobs report for February, Trump’s first full month in office, showing an increase of 235,000 jobs, are not wildly out of line with some monthly reports in recent years.

In contrast with the years of the Obama stimulus program, when the bulk of new jobs came in the public sector, it appears that the increase here is in the private sector. Moody’s Analytics said there were 298,000 new private-sector jobs in February, far more than the 189,000 it expected.

Construction jobs were up 58,000.

Private educational services jobs were up 29,000. And manufacturing jobs were up 28,000. This suggests that lots of employers, small as well as large, are taking the plunge and creating

Kate Majerus Sycamore, jr., G/F Majerus knocked down 37 percent of her 3-pointers and scored 14 points a game this season. She was an all-NI Big 12 Conference selection and helped the Spartans reach a sectional this year.

Jenni Weber Kaneland, jr., G Weber led the Knights with 14.2 points a game and set a school record with 69 3-pointers, shooting 37 percent from long range this season. She also had 4.1 rebounds a game and earned All-NI Big 12 Conference honors in helping the Knights reach the Class 3A Kaneland Sectional championship game.

Morgan Weber Kaneland, sr., G A member of the All-NI Big 12 Conference team, Weber averaged 11.4 points a game and shot 36 percent from 3-point range. She also was one of the top defenders in the conference.

ENOA – When it comes to the record books for the Genoa-Kingston girls basketball team, Julie Galauner has made sure her name appears again and again and again.

Galauner closed out her career with the Cogs averaging 18.3 points a game as a senior, and finished as the career leader in points, assists and 3-pointers made. She also is the Daily Chronicle Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

“It makes me feel like I’ve left a little legacy,” Galauner said of her school records, which also includes the single-season marks for points, assists and 3-pointers. “It feels good to know all the work in the summers and everything has just paid off.”

In all, she leaves the program as the record holder in 11 categories, including some free-throw records and most of the scoring, assists and 3-point shooting marks.

She also was the top scorer and distributor on this year’s G-K team, which won 20 games for the first time since the 1980s and only the fourth time in program history, coach Kyle Henkel said.

“She had another year of just improving on everything,” Henkel said.

“It’s not easy for her to put up those kinds of numbers. As far as offensive skills, we didn’t have a team that was loaded with offensive talent. We had a lot of kids that excelled in their role, but not offensively.”

Henkel said Galauner’s performances were directly related to how she prepared in practice.

“She did all those things nobody sees during the games,” Henkel said.

“She came in her freshman year, the summer before it and every summer since, putting in time in the gym. All the accolades she’s earned, it’s because she’s put the time in, in the gym. People get to see the game nights or read about the numbers she put up, and the wins that went with it, but she showed up and put in quality time and showed the impact that has for not only an individual, but a team.”

Galauner played varsity for four years, even earning some starts in her first season on a team that had its struggles.

Genoa-Kingston senior guard Julie Galauner – the Daily Chronicle Girls Basketball Player of the Year – finished her Cogs career as the school record holder in 11 categories, including the single-season marks for points, assists and 3-pointers.

“From me being a freshman on varsity, we had like eight wins,” Galauner said. “Now we have 20. It just shows the progression we had.”

The Cogs finished 20-10, reaching the championship of the Class 3A Sterling Regional.

Galauner called it an amazing season.

“It shows how far we’ve come and the work we’ve put in, and how much we can get out of all the work and the practices in the summer and everything,” she said. “One of our goals was to get to the regional championship,

and we did. We wanted to win that, obviously, but it didn’t work out.”

Henkel said Galauner – who will play at Aurora University next winter – was the perfect balance of hard work and natural talent.

“She did things in some games that you just don’t practice,” Henkel said.

“I think that’s just a lot of game time, logging long hours in the gym. I think the game comes easier to some kids, and I think she’s one of those kids.

It wasn’t just her skill level alone or being natural at it. She put the time in, and it shows on the record boards.”

Cogs open season with home loss Lauer bemoans team’s lack of enthusiasm

jseverson@shawmedia.com GENOA – Mike Lauer didn’t like the lack of passion he saw from the Genoa-Kingston softball team.

The Cogs coach had a long talk with his team after opening the season with an 11-4 loss against Rock Falls on Monday afternoon.

“This feels like we have a lot of things to work on and improve on and find a little bit of passion, find a little passion to play the game and come out and play the way we should,” Lauer said. “Hopefully we will.

Our body language is something we talked about and something we have to improve on. It was the same body language (being down) as it was when it was 0-0.”

The Cogs (0-1) struck first in the game, however. After Leea Perry smacked a double to right field in the bottom of the first inning, she eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Ashley Peterson.

Rock Falls did most of its Sam Buckner for Shaw Media damage on offense in two inLexi Howie fields a ball and throws it to first base during Monday’s nings – scoring four in the season opener against Rock Falls in Genoa. The Cogs lost, 11-4. second and blowing open the

game with a six-run sixth put them ahead, 11-1.

The Cogs avoided the mercy rule with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, including an RBI single by Peterson, and added their final run on an RBI single by Cassandra Bade. While Genoa-Kingston combined for five hits on the day – two each from Peterson and Bade, as well as Perry’s first-inning double – the Rockets combined for 15, with most of the damage coming from the middle of the lineup.

Their two-through-five hitters, Gracie Janssen, Natalie Soltow, Baylee Reynolds and Miranda Long, combined to go 11 for 17 with six RBIs. “It’s a nice way to start the year, especially with nine girls, so I’ll take it,” said Rock Falls coach Kris Nunez, whose Rockets are carrying only nine players on the varsity roster.

“A lot of experience in the heart of our order, and we have a lot of obstacles to overcome.

We have nine girls and we’re really young. We’ve got five sophomores, three seniors and one junior.”

The Cogs caught some bad breaks on the base paths on the afternoon, too. In the bottom of the fourth, Genoa-Kingston’s Erin Fidler was tagged out at home trying to score on a passed ball. Later in the inning, Lexi Howie was caught trying to steal at second.

In the bottom of the fifth,

the Cogs had the bases loaded with one out when Leah Fowler hit a pop up to second base that was called an infield fly. However, Rock Falls second baseman Kylee Ricketts dropped the ball, and Peterson was tagged at home trying to score after the confusion for the unorthodox double play.

“In a closer game, I think those are magnified more,” Lauer said. “At that point, as a coach, it might have been 11-1 at the point. You use those as teaching moments and pull kids aside and tell them about it, and, hopefully, they don’t make those mistakes again.”

By the numbers: Despite only having five hits, the Cogs had plenty of baserunners, with Rock Falls pitcher Soltow walking 11 batters and hitting another. Genoa-Kingston’s Kayti Beauchamp was 0 for 1, but walked in three plate appearances.

Beyond the stats: The Cogs had the bases loaded in three innings, but only scored one run in those chances.

They said it: “We’ll see how the next week or two goes, and we’ll see how it goes,” Lauer said. “For Genoa-Kingston softball, it’s sort of a new thing and it’s a shock, a little bit. We’re not used to this – the score, but also the way we came to play today. Hopefully, that changes.”

Up next: The Cogs play at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at North Boone.

the mound. Kyler, a football standout, will not be seeing much pitching action over the next weeks, but performed proficiently in the win.

“I can’t say enough about Kyler,” DeKalb first-year coach Dedric Wright said. “Coming into the game, we only had three arms available, and since I knew [Kyler] wouldn’t be pitching in the next week, I wanted to let him work as long as he could.”

Kyler pitched 51/3 innings, finishing with two strikeouts and throwing out two baserunners. Although Kyler struggled to start innings, walking the leadoff batter in the first three innings, the

rest of the defense rallied behind him.

The Barbs limited Boylan to two runs in the first four innings. DeKalb junior catcher Noah Hallaron went 3 for 4, and junior second baseman John Brei was 2 for 4.

“I look for the pitches I wanted and I put the bat on the ball,” Hallaron said.

In the top of the fifth, Boylan trailed the Barbs, 4-2. The Barbs let the Titans climb back into the game with two defensive errors. With two outs and two runners on base, Carlos Arteaga, starting pitcher for the Titans, stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run double.

other run and the lead to the Titans, prompting to Wright to bring in Max Lange to close the game.

In the bottom of the sixth, DeKalb leadoff hitter Matt Searls and Kyler each collected singles, and Searls managed to score on an errant pickoff attempt on Kyler at first, tying the score.

Alvaro Muños singled, adding another man on base before Lange hit a two-run double to give the Barbs a tworun lead. That would be all they needed as defense came through in the seventh inning.

The Barbs (2-2) will travel to Hampshire at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Perhaps it would be more realistic for parents to draw a line when it comes to youth tackle football. Is there a good reason 10-year-olds should be risking helmet-to-helmet collisions? Flag football seems like a reasonable alternative for the pre-high school age group.

When I’ve written about this topic in the past, a silence has always followed. Few parents want to think about the possibility of long-term damage to their sons. They’re too caught up in the excitement of the competition and the lessons of teamwork the game teaches. Some of them believe their kids will get scholarships to play Division I football.

It’s very human to think, “Not my kid.’’ But this is scary stuff, and if you don’t think it is, you’re purposely not paying attention.

A number of former NFL players have said they won’t allow their children to play football. That has served as a very loud wake-up call for parents. There was a slight increase in the number of children ages 6 to 12 who played tackle football in the United States in 2015, according to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association. But that increase, from 1.216 million in 2014 to 1.23 million the next year, can’t hide some darker figures: In 2009, 3.96 million kids ages 6 to 17 played tackle football. Six years later, the number had fallen to 3.21 million.

Those numbers are why the NFL is so involved in educating young players and their parents on proper tackling and concussion awareness.

Fewer people playing could mean less public interest in the game, which could translate into a drop in profits.

The NFL really, really likes money, so much so that it has discovered a conscience no one knew it had. Funny what lawsuits and dark thoughts about the future of the game can do.

Some former players don’t like to talk about the concussions they have suffered, and you can understand why.

The possibility of ending up with a debilitating condition is not something people want to discuss. Avoidance and prayer are easier alternatives.

Until you’ve lost the ability to avoid, pray and feed yourself.

Family: Sayers is battling dementia

Gale Sayers hears the greats on the other end of his phone, although he says little back.

Former Bears teammate Dick Butkus just called. So did another Hall of Famer, ex-Browns receiver Paul Warfield. Earl Campbell, the legendary former Oilers running back, phones once a week.

When Chicago friends check in, they ask Sayers whether he could play football today. It prompts a rare response – ‘Yeah, I sure can” – from the former Bears running back.

“They call and talk to him, because it is important,” Sayers’ wife, Ardie, said by phone from their Wakarusa, Indiana, home Monday. “Even sometimes remembering a person’s voice is important. He knows who they are.”

Sayers has dementia. Those closest to him have known as much for a while. He was diagnosed four years ago when, during his annual checkup at the Mayo Clinic, after Ardie told his doctor about increasingly unusual behavior in her husband. Once a great public speaker, Sayers struggled to write remarks – or remember old stories. He grew frustrated when he tried to talk.

Tests showed the beginnings of dementia, which has gotten worse since.

There are days, she said, when the 73-year-old can’t write his name.

He can be painfully quiet. He struggles with memory and speech but is physically fit enough to golf when it’s warm.

The family went public this week, first to the Kansas City Star, to quell any public speculation.

“People were wondering,” his wife of 33 years said. “People see him, and people began to wonder what was wrong with him. They could tell something was going on. People have started making their own assumptions about him.

“I said, ‘Well, it’s time. Maybe we should say something, and then they’ll hear from us and know the truth instead of someone else making up their own stories.’ ” Former Bears coach Mike Ditka noticed about a year and a half ago.

“I knew what he was like (before),” said Ditka, who actively promotes issues of retired players’ medical care.

“I knew that he was struggling with words and his memory a little bit.”

Sayers’ doctor said “football definitely had something to do with it,” Ardie said, but no one’s certain to what extent.

“My guess is, my gut is, that it’s had some influence,” his brother Roger said via phone from Omaha, Nebraska. “Whether or not I can say it’s the root cause, I don’t know.”

In 2013, a Chicago lawyer withdrew a lawsuit filed in Sayers’ name – at his request – against the NFL and helmet maker Riddell arguing the league was negligent in handling head trauma.

Sayers earned five first-team AllPro honors in a brief seven-year NFL career from 1965 to ’71.

“People in Chicago, we understand how great Walter Payton was, but Gale Sayers was way before his time,” said Ditka, a Bears teammate for two seasons. “He was the most electrifying runner, receiver, kick returner that I’ve ever seen in my life. …

“I’m not just saying this because he has a problem – I’ve never seen a guy who could do more.”

Gale Sayers’ family said last week that the former Bears great has dementia. Former 49ers receiver Dwight Clark announced Sunday that he has ALS. Quite the several days for the sport of football.

Let’s pause while we wait for the NFL to say that there is no proof the game caused what is ailing Sayers and Clark but that its heart goes out to the two men and their families.

There are No. 2 pencil erasers bigger than the NFL’s heart, so feel free to dismiss whatever sentiments the league chooses to blow out of its public-relations trombone.

The question isn’t whether playing the game is dangerous to brains or not, although the evidence seems clear that it is. The question is why any parent today would allow a child to play football. To do so is to hope against hope that either the link between football and long-term brain damage is fiction or that your child will be lucky enough to go unscathed.

Sayers sued the NFL in 2013, saying it failed to protect him from “devastating concussive head traumas.’’ Now he needs constant attention. His wife, Ardie, told the Kansas City Star that her 73-year-old husband recently tried to wash his hands with carpet cleaner.

Clark, 60, said he doesn’t know whether football led to his getting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, “but I certainly suspect it did.’’

I don’t want to paint a picture of a sport that produces an army of drooling, vacant-eyed former players. Many men who played high school, college and professional football appear to be perfectly healthy. But there certainly is a steady stream of people who believe that head trauma caused by the sport has altered their lives in a profound way.

How far are parents willing to go with football, especially with all the information we now have about its health risks? With all that we’re seeing? One former player after another steps forward, with the help of a wheelchair or a loved one’s arm or somebody else’s voice. Kansas City Star columnist Vahe Gregorian spent seven hours with Sayers and his wife and noted that the Hall of Fame running back hardly talked during that time.

That’s not how anyone wants to think of Sayers, nor is it what anyone envisioned for him when he was tearing up the NFL in a career cut short by knee injuries.

The same caution that applies to financial services applies to major league bullpens: Past performance is no guarantee of future success.

Relief pitching is the most fickle aspect of any baseball team. Injuries, the accumulation of innings and changes in performance force even the best of teams to parade reliever after reliever through their bullpens year after year.

Even while winning a world championship last year, the Cubs had their issues. They capitalized on the market in July, obtaining lightning-thrower Aroldis Chapman as their second-half and postseason closer. They drained all they could from Chapman before he returned to the Yankees as a free agent.

There were other issues. Displaced closer Hector Rondon and top setup man Pedro Strop were slowed by injuries late in the season, and neither was the same after coming back. Both are back in camp and professing to be healthy.

Chapman has been replaced by dependable and low-key closer Wade Davis, who was obtained from the Kansas City Royals in a trade for outfielder Jorge Soler.

Lefty Travis Wood signed with the Royals, and his role will be filled by fel-

low left-hander Brian Duensing. Righthander Justin Grimm is back, and the Cubs took a chance on righty Koji Uehara, who turns 42 on April 3. They’ll join a mix that includes intriguing youngster Carl Edwards Jr., who got 10th-inning experience in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.

Another reminder: The bullpen a team starts the season with is rarely the one that finishes the season.

The man to watch is Davis. The Cubs gave up a promising young position player for Davis, who can become a free Wade Davis agent after this season.

Last year, Davis saved a career-best 27 games (in 30 chances) in going 2-1 with a 1.87 ERA and a WHIP of 1.13.

During the Royals’ world championship season of 2015, Davis was 8-1 with a 0.94 ERA, 17 saves and a WHIP of 0.79.

He served two stints on the disabled list last year with forearm and flexor strains.

Through Sunday’s Cactus League action, Davis had pitched 21/3 innings in three games, giving up six hits and four runs.

“It’s definitely a blessing to be on a team that’s this young and motivated and talented,” said Davis, who was moved to the bullpen by now-Cubs

manager Joe Maddon in Tampa Bay for the 2011 postseason and then full time for the 2012 regular season.

Maddon described Davis as “physically gifted,” and said his stuff got better when he became a reliever.

“His stuff is above and beyond, especially when we put him in the bullpen and he stayed there on a more consistent basis. You see the velocity, the break and all that kind of stuff,” Maddon said.

“There was definitely an uptick from starting to relieving. You’d see flashes of that as a starter. You see it more consistently stuff wise as a reliever.

“And the other side: this incredible calm about him. That’s a big part of what plays so well in the bullpen, the fact that he is able to process the moment so slowly.”

Let’s not forget Rondon. In the past three years with the Cubs, he piled up 77 saves (30 in 2015). He went on the disabled list Aug. 19 with a right triceps strain. In the final month of the season, he had a 9.82 ERA and a WHIP of 2.05.

Strop hurt his knee in August and then suffered a groin injury while rehabbing the knee. He was out for more than a month. In the early days of this year’s spring training, he signed a oneyear contract extension through 2018.

If both Strop and Rondon can return to form, the Cubs will boast a deep back of their bullpen.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Shortstop Tim Anderson was out of the lineup for a third straight day when the White Sox hosted the Giants on Monday at Camelback Ranch.

By the afternoon, it became apparent why.

Both manager Rick Renteria and Anderson, who was in his practice uniform in the Sox clubhouse Monday morning, said Anderson was out for “personal” reasons, but a source confirmed an MLB.com report that the Sox and Anderson are discussing a Tim Anderson long-term contract extension for the 23-year-old.

A Sox spokesman would not confirm or deny the report. An announcement was not expected Monday.

“It’s just a personal problem; we’re going to try (to) take care of it before I get back into things,” Anderson said Monday morning when asked why he was sitting out.

“He’s fine,” Renteria said, adding he hoped to have Anderson back in the lineup Tuesday.

Anderson is batting .333 with a homer and two doubles this spring after he posted a .283/.306/.432 slash line with nine home runs, 22 doubles and six triples in his rookie year in 2016.

The Sox extended Chris Sale, Jose Quintana and Adam Eaton to multiyear contracts before they became eligible for free agency, but an Anderson extension would come much earlier on the player’s career path. Anderson wouldn’t be eligible for arbitration until before the 2020 season, and for free agency in 2023.

Sale signed a five-year, $32.5 million extension with two options through 2019 during spring training in 2013. He was three years into his career.

Quintana was signed the next spring to a fiveyear, $21 million deal with two options through 2020. He had two years under his belt. Eaton signed a five-year, $23.5 million deal with two options during spring training 2015.

The contracts heightened Sale’s and Eaton’s trade value in December and does the same for Quintana, who could be moved as the Sox rebuild for the future.

The Sox consider Eaton, as well as 24-year-old Carlos Rodon – who is represented by Scott Boras – as two key components in their future plans.

Giants 3, Sox 2 (Glendale, Ariz.) ’DO CAN DO Right-hander Reynaldo Lopez impressed again with six innings of scoreless, two-hit ball while walking none and striking out four Monday.

Lopez, 23, arguably had been the most impressive of the pitching prospects acquired in the Chris Sale and Adam Eaton trades, and that was before his best outing yet. A move from the right side to the middle of the pitching rubber, a suggestion from pitching coach Don Cooper, clicked.

“Yes, this was the best,” Lopez said through translator Billy Russo.

Lopez logged 44 innings for the Nationals last season (5-3, 4.91 ERA), but is a long shot to open the season with the Sox, whose

starting rotation is set for now.

This is his first big league camp, but look for him to come up from Triple-A Charlotte before too long.

“That wouldn’t be a disappointment because I’ve been taking advantage of this opportunity,” said Lopez, who owns a 3.72 ERA over team-highs of five starts and 191/3 innings.

Lopez was opposed by fellow Dominican Johnny Cueto, who also hails from San Pedro de Macoris. They train at the same facility, Lopez said. ‘’I said, ‘I know he’s good, but I can be good, too,’ ” Cueto said.

Yale to NHL: Hayden makes smooth transition

mpotash@suntimes.com CHICAGO – After Blackhawks rookie forward John Hayden scored his first NHL goal in his second NHL game Saturday night against the Maple Leafs, he was even better Sunday against the Avalanche – two huge assists, five hits and a plus-3 differential in a 6-3 victory.

“Sometimes you get that first goal early on, it gives you some relief that you can play at this level,” said Hawks captain Jonathan Toews, who scored in his NHL debut in 2007 and ended up with a point in his first 10 games en route to being the runner-up for the Calder Trophy.

“You believe in your skill and what you can do. Systemwise, [Hayden’s] getting more and more comfortable with being in the right place and eventually trusting his own instincts.”

Battling in front of the net – and holding his own – in the third period, Hayden had the primary assist on the first two

goals of the Hawks’ stunning five-goal third period. With the Hawks trailing, 3-1, midway through the period, Hayden tipped a Duncan Keith shot that Toews deflected past Jeremy Smith to make it 3-1. On his next shift, again in front of the net, Hayden lunged to tip a

rebound in the slot to Richard Panik for a goal that tied the score 17 seconds later.

A week earlier, Hayden was playing for No. 8 seed Yale (1313-5) against No. 1 Harvard in the East Coast Athletic Conference tournament. Now he’s spending his spring break in the middle of a red-hot Hawks run.

“It was awesome,” the 6-foot3, 210-pound Hayden said. “I think it says a lot about this locker room. I haven’t been here long, but I can already tell that there’s amazing leadership and a culture to never give up.”

It’s a small sample, but in his first four games with the Hawks, Hayden has one goal and three points, with a plus-4 differential.

The Hawks have won all four games. Hayden has yet to be on the ice for a goal against.

“You like his composure in games, his thought process, physicality,” coach Joel Quenneville said. “He comes up with a lot of pucks. Had some big, hard hits [against the Avalanche]. You notice him.”

Rookies have come and

gone since the Hawks won their first Stanley Cup in 2010, but a power forward who can get in front of the net, throw his weight around and contribute defensively seems to have a better chance of sticking around. Hayden already looks like a guy who will be given every chance to make it. Playing on a line with Toews is a pretty good head start in this league.

“He’s arguably the best player in the world,” Hayden said of Toews, “and he works as hard, probably harder than anyone and really values the details in the game. It’s been nice learning from him, and, hopefully, I can soak in a lot more.”

Hayden, 22, was a thirdround draft pick (74th overall) by the Hawks in 2013. He still has classwork to finish, but he is acclimating well to a new team in a much higher league.

“Every day, every practice, every game, I’m transitioning a little better,” Hayden said. “It’s really the coaches and guys in this locker room that are helping to make it pretty seamless.”

Ineffective point guard Payne assigned to D-League

CHICAGO – It’s looking as though the Bulls, who have 12 games left in their regular-season campaign, could soldier on without Cameron Payne.

They will start an important week Tuesday night in Toronto without Payne, who is being assigned to their Windy City Bulls D-League team for at least a few days.

Payne, acquired from the Thunder on Feb. 23, has missed the past three games with a troubling, surgically repaired sore foot.

“We’re going to send Cam down to the D-League,” coach Fred Hoiberg said after practice Monday. “He’s going to practice this afternoon and then he’ll play in tomorrow’s game. And then the plan is to see how things go with the game, practice with Windy City again on Wednesday and then play in the game on Thursday, as well.”

How much of this is a rehab, and how much is a reassignment in which Payne, who hasn’t dazzled in Chicago,

Continued from page 20 In nine games with the Bulls since the trade that sent Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott to Oklahoma City, Payne has underwhelmed, averaging six points and 1.7 assists in 15 minutes a game. Overall, it has hardly been the stuff of a point guard of the future.

The thing is, the Bulls can’t wait.

One game out of the final Eastern Conference playoff slot, Hoiberg and his players are focused on making the most of their final dozen games despite the struggles of Payne and the loss of Dwyane Wade to an elbow injury.

The Bulls’ four games in the next six days will tell a lot. They begin with the trip to fourth-place Toronto, a team the Bulls have beaten a mind-boggling 11 straight times.

Two of the Bulls’ next three games after that are against the Pistons and the Bucks, who are just a couple of games ahead of them in the jockeying for the final playoff berths. In other words, by Sunday, the Bulls’ postseason prospects probably will have taken a serious turn for better or worse.

Restless fans might not be interested in a team that’s not likely to stick around in the playoffs even if it gets there. But that goal matters to the players.

Asked whether he was having any fun at all, he began with a terse, “No,” then added, “You just try to go out there and have good practices. This is the first time in almost three weeks where we’ve had two (open) days – a day (off) to give the guys an opportunity to catch their breath, and then bounce back with a good practice. [We had] a spirited practice. You hope that carries over to the game, not only [Tuesday], but the remainder of our stretch with 12 to go.”

Is it stressful?

“No, you can’t look at it that way,” Hoiberg said, pointing to the positives of the Bulls’ last two games. “It’s all about the preparation. It’s about buying in. It’s about doing the little things.

[In] our second half against Washington, we did a much better job. In the Utah game, [from] the middle of the first quarter, when he had a double-digit deficit all the way through the fourth, we were pretty darn good. You take those things that you do well and you try to build on it.”

The new coach also will need to maintain the highly touted recruiting class he inherited. The incoming class is ranked in the top 15, and Underwood said he has spoken to the commits and wants to meet with them to talk about potential roles.

“This state produces a lot of elite talent,” Underwood said. “We want the best players in this state to play for Illinois. Keeping elite players is vital.”

After a quick weekend, the work doesn’t stop for Underwood. With recruiting to do and a staff to firm up, Underwood also mentioned bringing back old players and coaches who made Illinois into what he considers a top program while he puts together a team that plays a fast offense and gritty defense.

“You will all be proud of what goes out there,” Underwood said. “We’re going to play for the name on the front.”

CHAMPAIGN – Brad Underwood is back home.

Although the 53-year-old was born in McPherson, Kansas, Illinois became home when he served as an assistant coach at Western Illinois from 1992 to 2003. It was then that he matched wits with Lon Kruger and Bill Self, and he saw what it meant to play against Illinois. He witnessed the support from the community and the students and was hooked.

Still, it was a surprise when his agent let him know Illinois and other schools had reached out about his availability after one season coaching at Oklahoma State. He had taken the Cowboys to the NCAA tournament, but he had been in Stillwater for only a year and never let himself think about the possibility of coaching at Illinois.

On Saturday, he met with Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman and got the job he thought he’d never have.

“I felt this was an elite program,” Underwood said Monday as the school formally introduced him in an on-campus news conference. “I dream big,

The hiring came as a surprise, and not just to Underwood and Oklahoma State. It was Whitman making another aggressive move one year after bringing in Lovie Smith in a bid to turn around the moribund football program.

Whitman didn’t use a search firm as he looked for a replacement for John Groce, but did rely on others in the basketball community, including former players Jerry Colangelo and Mannie Jackson. After watching game film, interviews and other things, Whitman knew this was their guy. With openings at Indiana, California and Washington, he knew he had little time to waste.

Underwood didn’t speak to Whitman until Saturday, but at that moment it seemed to be a perfect marriage for both parties. “[Whitman’s] a tremendous salesman and so proud of his university,” Underwood said. “He didn’t have to sell me. The ‘we will win,’ that’s what I’m about.”

Underwood upped his salary for the second straight year. He will average $3 million for the next six seasons

Tinnitus symptom of other problem Dear Doctors: Sometimes, I get a sudden hissing sound in my right ear that lasts for a few minutes and then slowly goes away.

What is it, and is there anything I can do to make it stop?

Dear Reader: What you’re experiencing is known as tinnitus, which is the medical term for a perceived sound that doesn’t have an external source. Tinnitus is not a condition in and of itself, but is instead a symptom of some other underlying problem.

Exposure to noise is a major cause of tinnitus, as is hearing loss. Both can result in damage to the sensitive hair cells that line the cochlea. This is the portion of the inner ear that translates vibrations into nerve impulses, which are then sent to the brain to be interpreted as sound.

Blockage due to earwax buildup, as well as changes to the ear bones as we age, can contribute to tinnitus. Some medications, including certain antibiotics, cancer drugs, antidepressants and high doses of aspirin, are known to play a role in tinnitus.

Although the most common form of tinnitus involves a ringing in the ears, people with this condition also may hear the hissing you describe, as well as buzzing, clicking, humming, whistling or a roaring sound, like wind.

In rare cases, patients with tinnitus even have reported hearing music. Tinnitus can affect one or both ears. It ranges in volume from a low, background noise that is bearable and even forgettable, to sounds so loud and persistent that they interfere with daily life. In many cases, tinnitus is temporary. In severe cases, the phantom sounds never go away.

It is estimated that up to 45 million Americans – that’s 15 percent of the population – report having some form of tinnitus on a regular basis. Like you, the vast

In objective tinnitus, which affects just 1 percent of the population, the sounds a patient hears are audible to others as well. The causes of objective tinnitus most often are internal conditions related to blood flow in vessels near the ear.

Men are more prone to tinnitus than women, and it becomes increasingly common as we age. Individuals who work in loud environments, such as factories and construction sites, are at increased risk. Recent studies suggest that earbuds, which sit so close to the delicate structures of the inner ear, also may put users at higher risk.

At this time, there is no single treatment for tinnitus. An examination by an ear specialist, known as an otolaryngologist, can pinpoint whether tinnitus is due to earwax buildup, medication or, more rarely, a blood vessel condition. These often are treatable. If not, your doctor can help you explore noise suppression techniques such as using a white noise machine, or masking devices that are worn in the ears.

Meanwhile, you can take steps to lessen the impact of tinnitus. Make sure your blood pressure is under control, avoid loud noises, which can set off a tinnitus episode, and – this will improve your overall quality of life – be sure to get enough rest.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY fiance and I have been engaged for Jeanne two years. Our Phillips wedding is set for a year from now.

I’m thinking about calling off our wedding, not because I don’t love him, or because I don’t want to spend the rest of my life with him. I know I want that. It’s because I’m the only one with a decent job. He has a job, but doesn’t earn enough to support us.

I can’t be the only one earning an income.

How are we supposed to move out of our parents’ houses and start a life together if I’m the one doing everything? What will happen when things need to start getting paid for, and there’s no guarantee he’ll find something? I have talked to him about it, and he’s angry. He knows it’s time to change his life around and get serious.

Should I keep the date and keep my fingers crossed he’ll find a job by then, or postpone our wedding, which has a venue but nothing else planned? I don’t need to get married anytime soon, and I’d prefer to wait until he can support himself and we are in a better place financially.

Over South’s one-spade opening, North responded four diamonds, a splinter bid promising four-card or longer spade support, a singleton or void in diamonds and at least game-going values. This bid improved South’s hand, so he control-bid the heart ace. That was sufficient for North, who jumped to five no-trump, which was the Grand Slam Force, asking South to bid seven spades with two of the top three spade honors.

At first glance, maybe you went for these 13 tricks: five spades, two hearts, three clubs and three diamond ruffs in the dummy. However, the bad heart break is fatal.

It is better to play for five spades, three hearts, three clubs and two diamond ruffs. Declarer should draw trumps and cash the heart ace.

(Starting with the heart king is fatal if West has all four hearts, unlikely though that may be.) If both opponents follow, South plays a heart to the king, discards his remaining hearts on the top clubs and ruffs a heart.

Here, when West discards, declarer also plays a heart to the king and pitches his last three hearts, but then he leads the heart jack for a ruffing finesse through East’s queen to establish a third winner in the suit.

Upper Octave is a brass band made up of seven DeKalb High School band students- Noah Brooks, Rathke Devonte Chris Allen, Maddi Hoth, Joseph Rathke, Merrick, Colton Kammes, and Dylan Propheter.

The group was founded last year when preparing for their school’s talent show, but before that they have played together in many other ensembles.

Upper Octave’s main goal is to bring instrumental music to their whole school and to engage their non-musical listeners by playing pop tunes. Upper Octave would like to thank the band Lucky Chops for being their main inspiration and would like to thank the people at Kiwanis for providing them with this opportunity to perform! Come hear them perform April 1st!
