YMCA a life-changer for entire family POLL YMCA stands for Young Men’s Christian Organization. It used to help struggling men seek shelter and the Lord.

The name does not serve the purpose anymore. The “Y” serves as a community outreach for all women, men, children and families. It still is Christian-based, but it also accepts members of other religions. The YMCA promotes more positive character and values than anything else.

The Kishwaukee YMCA has been a life-changer for my family. We once were a member of another local gym that was open 24 hours.

However, we couldn’t always find a baby sitter so we could go when it was convenient for us.

So we were not even exercising five days a week or for even an hour.

We were wasting money for a sitter and on membership fees. We felt like we were battling so many things just to work out.

One of our neighbors told us about the “Y” located off Bethany Road. At first, my husband was opposed to joining. He thought that it was too far for us to drive just to work out. I convinced him to at least tour the facility. The equipment was up to date, and the facility was very clean.

Although the staff member was discussing the facility’s many amenities, he or she had me at two hours of free child care. I thought to myself, “Did I hear that correctly? Can both my husband and I actually work out for more than an hour without paying a sitter?”

This benefit had me sold. All I needed to do

I was so eager to start our new workout routine. Like anything, the first time we went to the YMCA it was a little awkward.

When we dropped off Hannah Jo at the Kid Zone, we also were concerned that she would not enjoy it. When we returned from our awesome workout, we knew we made the right choice. She was happy to see us but didn’t want to leave.

The YMCA has been a place for my husband and me to enjoy quality time together. It also has given me time to relax in the sauna or walk the track while checking emails and Facebook.

It offers various classes for Hannah Jo as well as adults. As a family and for the price, it is by far the best investment we have made in a long time.

God bless the YMCA for giving me the reprieve and service we need.

Mayoral candidates discuss city’s challenges at Sycamore election forum

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The three candidates campaigning to replace Ken Mundy as mayor of Sycamore were tasked with naming one challenging issue the city faces and how they would handle it during a candidate forum Sunday at the Sycamore Public Library.

The event was hosted by Sycamore Area Indivisible, an interest group aiming to increase participation in local politics.

Each candidate in attendance was given three minutes to make an opening statement and an additional three minutes to answer questions from the audience, which was comprised of more than 50 residents.

Naming a challenging issues Sycamore faces was one of the first questions the mayoral candidates were asked.

Fourth Ward Alderman Rick “Spider” Kramer said one of the hardest things he has faced is the lengthy amount of time to open a business in Sycamore, noting the process he underwent in opening his downtown business, Spider Tattooz.

“I’ve heard people say it’s tough to open a business here and that we’re not business friendly, but we can do something as a city to streamline the process,” Kramer said. “It took me over nine months to open my business, and realistically it shouldn’t take that long.”

Kramer added that as a volunteer firefighter, he has learned the skills of good teamwork and integrity, qualities he aims to take with him when working with city staff.

“I’ve dedicated my life to helping others in need, some on their worst days ever,” Kramer said. “I will work as a team with the City Council to keep budgets on track, not raise taxes and get infrastructure upgrades.”

First Ward Alderman Curt Lang said one challenge he has noticed is how public complaints are being handled by the City Council.

“People are at the City Council meetings because they are unhappy, so we need to figure out how to balance city codes to please the majority of the people,” Lang said.

“That may not be possible, but to me, that’s a real issue.”

Lang added that there also is a lack of communication between the city and local developers and business owners.

“The Chamber of Commerce fills that role somewhat, but I just know communication between city departments and developers is an issue we need to deal with,” Lang said.

Sycamore City Clerk Candy Smith said one challenge she notices

is a lack of communication between residents.

“People won’t talk to people, and I think we have to take the time to get to know each other and we can work through our differences instead of going to the police department for them to be answered,” Smith said.

Smith added that she feels the community is safe.

“The police chief just gave a report that crimes in 2016 are down and arrests are up, so I think we’re getting criminals for a lot of stuff that’s going on,” Smith said. “I’ve spend 18 years working with the city, and I want to continue that service by listening to, caring for and leading you as the next mayor of this city.”

also were in attendance. Fourth Ward candidates James Bisceglie and Virginia Sherrod; city clerk candidates Cortney Cox, Christiene Drake, Lisa Hepker, Shaney Herrmann and Mary Kalk; and township highway commissioner candidates Williams Powers and Ronald Edwards all gave presentations.

However, not all candidates for some races came to the event.

Township trustee candidates John Ward, Ellen Rogers, Chris Brundies and Chase Renwick attended the forum, but Russell Josh, Rebecca Edwards and George Diedrich did not. Eric Jones, one of three candidates for a Sycamore School District 427 Board position as part of Sycamore Township, participated, but Jason Hulst and Jeff Jacobson did not. Cortland Township candidate A.J. Hofer also was in attendance, but Mayfield Township candidate Jim Dombek was not.

Volunteers gather for Prairie Park cleanup

Sycamore council to vote on permit for Meijer store

news@daily-chronicle.com DeKALB – Samantha DeDina of Genoa was excited to start another park cleanup Saturday morning at Prairie Park in DeKalb.

DeDina, a maintenance superintendent with ENCAP Inc. – a DeKalb-based environmental consulting firm and native landscape preservation company – recently finished a similar effort March 11 with ENCAP and the city of Genoa.

She and her husband, also an ENCAP employee, heard about the Prairie Park cleanup and couldn’t wait to help.

“It’s not my first cleanup,” she said with a smile.

Volunteers gathered at Prairie Park in DeKalb for a park cleanup Saturday.

The volunteers brought hot coffee and doughnuts and got to work preparing the park for spring and summer visitors.

“We’re clearing large branches from the nonpaved trails, and most importantly, clear out as much honeysuckle as we can,” said Todd Bex, park supervisor for the DeKalb Park District.

There will be a project a month in the spring before skipping the summertime, and the projects will resume in the fall.

SYCAMORE – Plans for a Meijer supercenter are set to come before the Sycamore City Council for a vote Monday after gaining approval from the Planning Commission.

The council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the Council Chambers of the Sycamore Center, 308 W. State St. The proposed Meijer store would be in the Sycamore Crossings subdivision at the northwest corner of DeKalb Avenue and Peace Road, which the city annexed in 2006.

Planning commissioners unanimously voted to recommend the proposal from Rockford-based First Midwest Group after a public hearing March 13, where some residents of Sycamore Crossings raised

OBITUARIES GARNET B. MOORE Born: March 10, 1921 Died: March 17, 2017

Garnet Boyer Moore, age 96, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2017 at the Franklin Grove Nursing Center with her family at her side.

She was born March 10, 1921 in Marengo, IL, the daughter of John W. and Grace (Thompson) Boyer. She was united in marriage to Claude Richard Moore on July 4, 1940.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Claude; two brothers, Roger Boyer and Chase Boyer; and a sister, Charlotte Eicksteadt.

Garnet is survived by her children, Lester (Linda) Moore of Keota, OK and LaRonda (Roger) Thuestad of Rochelle; four grandchildren, Deanna White, Doug (Nicole) Moore, Ray Thuestad, and Pat (Paul) Juneau; eight great-grandchildren, Michelle (Chris) Pridie, Johnathan Thompson, Arianna, Samantha, and Callen Moore, Adam Thuestad, Joshua Thuestad, and Cody (Kim) Weidner; a great-great-granddaughter, Autumn Weidner; and a sister-in-law, Bernetta Boyer.

A funeral service will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 126 E. South Street, in Creston with Pastor Ronald Larson officiating.

Doll said she hopes a cleaner park will encourage more people to explore off the paved paths.

“Where it’s open, people will come,” she said. “Cleaning opens more sections of the park for people who want to explore. It encourages people to go off the pavement.”

After projects to clean the Kishwaukee River shore and clear away buckthorn from Prairie Park in 2016, park officials are starting off this year focusing on honeysuckle.

“It’s an invasive plant,” Doll said.

“After we remove it, it gives native plants a better chance.”

When spring comes, the park officials hope the open area will look more beautiful and inviting after they clear out the overgrowth in the park.

Doll elaborated on the future plans for the park. With the help of the city of DeKalb, she hopes there will be a trail added to connect Prairie Park – under-

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Senate’s “grand bargain” budget compromise has had a rough go, with false starts, misfires, a lukewarm Republican reception and Democrats abruptly pulling the plug last month when GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner weighed in against it. And that doesn’t count taxpayers’ reaction.

The 12 disparate measures comprising the grand bargain were cobbled together in an attempt to recharge stalled negotiations over a two-year budget stalemate that has fueled a multibillion-dollar budget deficit. An Associated Press analysis of Senate records shows nearly 4,700 witnesses wanting a say in at least one of the individual measures.

“If gambling could solve the budget crisis, it would have done so by now,” said Kathy Gilroy, an independent insurance agent and anti-gambling activist from Villa Park, who filed her objection electronically. “Doing the same thing and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.”

It’s that type of opposition that hamstrings hopes of a deal, particularly one so widespread and complex. Even if lawmakers could agree, a “yes” vote could push voters to eject them at the next election. That’s especially true when the critics are well-funded groups with clout, such as labor unions, business interests or teachers.

Pipeline connecting Chicago to Detroit now in service

PORTAGE, Mich. – Officials said a fuel pipeline running from the Chicago area to the Detroit area is now in service.

The Wolverine Pipe Line Company has announced that the first commercial volume for the Detroit Metro Access Pipeline shipped earlier this month. The roughly 34 miles of pipeline connects to an existing Wolverine pipeline to transport refined petroleum products.

WASHINGTON – The top two lawmakers on the House intelligence committee said Sunday that documents the Justice Department and FBI delivered late last week offered no evidence that the Obama administration had wiretapped Trump Tower, but the panel’s ranking Democrat said the material offers circumstantial evidence that American citizens colluded with Russians in Moscow’s efforts to interfere in the presidential election.

“There was circumstantial evidence of collusion; there is direct evidence, I think, of deception,” Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said.

“There’s certainly enough for us to conduct an investigation.”

The House intelligence committee is to begin hearings Monday into Russia’s role in cybersecurity breaches at the Democratic National Committee, as well as President Donald Trump’s unsubstantiated claim that his predecessor had authorized a wiretap of Trump Tower. FBI Director James Comey and Mike Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency, are slated to testify.

Intelligence officials have said that Russia was behind the theft of Democratic National Committee emails last summer. The U.S. government later concluded that the Russian government directed the DNC hack in an attempt to influence the outcome of November’s presidential election.

“For the first time the American people, and all the political parties now, are paying attention to the threat that Russia poses,” committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., said.

“We know that the Russians were trying to get involved in our campaign, like they have for many decades. They’re also trying to get involved in campaigns around the globe and over in Europe.”

Nunes said the committee will also exam-

ine whether the Russians were trying to sow doubt in the U.S. electoral system or whether they were trying to help Trump get elected to the White House.

“We need to get to the bottom of that,” Nunes said.

Nunes and Schiff were among a number of lawmakers who said on Sunday’s news shows they had seen no evidence that the Obama administration ordered wiretaps on Trump during the campaign.

“Was there a physical wiretap of Trump Tower? No there never was,” Nunes said. “The information we received Friday continues to lead us in that direction.”

Nunes added: “There was no FISA warrant I am aware of to tap Trump Tower.” FISA stands for the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which requires investigators to seek a warrant from a secret court to wiretap a foreign suspect.

Republican Sens. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Susan Collins of Maine also said Sunday they had seen no evidence that the Obama administration had placed Trump under surveillance at Trump Tower, the Manhattan highrise that houses Trump’s residence, business office and campaign office. Two senseless headscarf bans Je’nan Hayes played all season on her Montgomery County, Maryland, high school basketball team without incident. But when she showed up for a regional final game this month, she was benched when a referee invoked a seldom-enforced rule requiring her to have documentation for wearing a hijab, part of her Muslim faith.

Understandably, she broke down in tears.

A hijab is also the reason that Samira Achbita was fired from her job as a receptionist for a security- services firm in Belgium. She told the company, for which she had already worked for three years, that she wanted to start wearing a headscarf at work, but her bosses refused to allow it, saying there was an “unwritten” rule against it.

She started wearing one anyway, and the day before the company turned the unwritten rule into a written one, Achbita was fired.

The European Union’s highest court this week turned aside her complaint of religious discrimination.

We are shaking our heads at this foolishness. What on earth was that referee thinking in insisting – against the entreaties of the girl’s basketball coach to use common sense - that she needed a signed waiver to prove her head covering was for religious reasons?

Doesn’t that firm in Belgium recognize the harm of judging the value of a person by what they wear? And why didn’t the European Court of Justice give voice to the need for tolerance in the workplace?

It is of some comfort that Maryland school athletic officials didn’t even try to defend the events of March 3 that stranded Je’Nan on the bench. Sheepish about the rigid reading of the rulebook, they agreed the girl should have been allowed to play.

It is of comfort, too, that Dutch voters on Wednesday did not elevate their most intolerant party into a position of power. But these are struggles that will not be ended with one election or one court case.

There are situations when rules about what can be worn make sense, for safety or security reasons.

But banning headscarves, which the European Court of Justice seemed to greenlight as long as they aren’t singled out from other religious garb, serves no purpose other than to separate and penalize. That is harmful not only to the individual being singled out but also to society at large, which is better served by inclusiveness.

Trump supporters still back him despite lies For all the news media’s rightful focus on the kleptocracy, lying, manipulation and malpractice that undergird the presidency of Donald J. Trump, there is something even more troubling about this administration: its supporters. No matter what outrageous falsehood he tweets, no matter what ethical standard he eviscerates, no matter what democratic principle he violates, Trump’s supporters stand by loyally.

They dismiss the evidence presented by experts from right and left. They accept this hour’s lie, which contradicts the lie of the hour before. They even deny their own values in order to cling to Trump’s heresies.

The president’s latest big lie is the claim that President Barack Obama wiretapped Trump Tower to spy on his campaign. Trump and his surrogates have repeated various versions of that dangerous falsehood for several days now, with no evidence whatsoever to back it up. But according to a poll by Rasmussen Reports, Republican voters tend to believe Trump.

Historians tell us that this is the way that dictatorships begin. A totalitarian makes war on truth, perverts the assumptions that underlie critical thinking and masters the dark art of propagan-

Join Safe Passage to stop domestic violence

To the Editor: I write to implore men and women of this community to join in reducing or stopping domestic violence and sexual assault in our midst.

I am passionate about this problem, but this is not my personal cause. I have been blessed to be in a loving marriage for more than four decades.

Nor is it only the cause of the mostly women who work and volunteer at our county’s domestic violence and sexual assault agency, Safe Passage.

Nor is interpersonal violence only a women’s issue. It is a community problem that affects us all and will take all of us to solve.

If, like me, you read this paper daily or pay attention to almost any media, you know how depressingly prevalent such violence against children and especially toward women really is.

I do not believe anyone is born hating or feeling superior to those who are different. Much of our socialization, however, does a pretty good job of training prejudice and lack of anger control into us.

With very limited resources, Safe Passage is working to counter those

forces and to create understanding and appreciation of healthy relationships.

Its many services are offered free to anyone in our entire community. But Safe Passage needs your help.

Now more than ever, we need to think globally and act locally. Will you help?

Sycamore and DeKalb chambers to host expo DAILY CHRONICLE The Sycamore and DeKalb chambers of commerce will host a community expo from 4 to 7 p.m. March 30 at the Sycamore High School field house. About 130 local businesses and organizations are scheduled to participate.

“It is a joint effort between Sycamore and DeKalb chambers and our goal is simply to promote the businesses and nonprofits of our two communities,” Rose Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, said in a news release.

“The majority of the 130-plus businesses that participate in this event are small businesses. So, it is a great opportunity for you to meet the owners one-on-one,” Treml said in the

release. “We are all told and reminded to try to ‘Shop Local’ and to support Small Business Saturdays. This is the community’s chance to see what small local businesses we have in our county all in one place.”

The expo will include food samples from a variety of local restaurants, crafts and games for children, live demonstrations, 2017 car models, inflatable bounce houses and a live DJ. Attendees can enter to win raffle drawings and prizes.

FUMC offers grief support group DAILY CHRONICLE First United Methodist Church of DeKalb is offering a monthly grief support group beginning Wednesday.

The group for adults who have lost a loved one to grow through loss and to find a way to healing and hope through sharing, music and prayer.

It is open to everyone in the community whether their grief is new or old. The group is offered as a community service at no charge, and there is no requirement for attending all sessions. Associate Pastor Deborah Kang will facilitate the group.

Meetings will be from 11 a.m. to

12:30 p.m. Wednesdays on the fourth week of the month in the handicapped-accessible church located at 317 N. Fourth St. in DeKalb. Participants can park in the north lot next to the church and enter through the Fourth Street entrance.

Appetizers will be served at 6 p.m. There will be a cash bar and door prizes.

‘Good Roads’ movement to be discussed in Sycamore DAILY CHRONICLE The highways systems in Illinois are only 100 years old and were born as the result of fierce debates and an incessant clamor for “Good Roads.”

From the 1890s until World War I, there is a fascinating combination of stories about road-building, named highways and the “Good Roads” movement. Join the Sycamore History Museum on March 28 to hear Larry McClellan discuss this part of

local, regional and national history.

Before interstates and federal highways were distinguished by numbers – Route 30 or I-55, for instance – these roads were christened with colorful names. The Lincoln, Dixie and Mississippi Valley highways, and the Alton Way, Swastika Trail and Corn Belt Route all were memorable roads that carried people across the state. From 1913 on, these were among the 51 named highways developed in Illinois. Hear about the

creation of these named highways and the eventual numbering systems for our roads.

McClellan helped create Governors State University and served many years as professor of sociology and community studies and held a variety of administrative positions.

In the mid-70s, he was mayor of University Park (then Park Forest South). He was selected by the Illinois Humanities Council for 2013-14 as an Illinois “Roads Scholar” lecturer on

the history of Illinois highways.

In retirement, his consulting, research and writing focus on historic highways, the Underground Railroad in Illinois, and on regional history south of Chicago.

This program will take place at 7 p.m. at the DeKalb County Community Foundation, 475 DeKalb Ave. in Sycamore. There will be a charge of $5 a person.

SYCAMORE – Long after winning her third and fourth state championship medals, after the bus ride back with the DeKalb-Sycamore gymnastics team and after the celebratory pizza party with her teammates, Aleah Leman got into the passenger’s seat of her parents’ car and cried her eyes out.

It was over.

The DeKalb senior knew it was the last time she would compete with her DeKalb-Sycamore teammates, and the emotional day last month was filled with battling a mixture of cheers and tears.

“I got in the car and shut the door and just started sobbing,” said Leman, who is the Daily Chronicle Gymnast of the Year for the third consecutive season. “I was full-out bawling my eyes out. I told my parents it was coming; I told everybody it was coming. I knew I was going to. It’s over. Everything’s over.

“I remember sitting there (at the state championships) after everything – all the awards – we were taking pictures with the trophy, and I was sitting there with my team, trying not to cry. It was like, ‘This is my last time with them.’

It was a moment of reflection, of ‘I love this sport, I love this team, and I’m so happy to be doing this.’ ” Leman, 17, capped her decorated career with the DeKalb-Sycamore team by adding two more individual state championships. She was first in the vault (9.85) – which she also won as a sophomore in 2015 – and was tied for first in the bars (9.525). Last season, she was at the top in the state in the floor exercise.

She leaves with her fingerprints on a program that finished as the state runner-up the past two seasons.

“She’s been a great kid to watch grow and coach,” coach Andy Morreale said. “Those type of athletes don’t come around very often. She had all the things that you can’t coach. They either have it or they don’t. The work ethic – you can’t teach somebody to work hard. Over the years, I’ve learned some athletes have it and some don’t. She’s always been one that had that work ethic.”

There have been plenty of crossroads for Leman in her gymnastics career, which began when she was 3 years old. Around her fifth year in the sport, when things started to get more intense, she said she seriously contemplated quitting.

“There were two or three times where it was a serious sit-down with

I’m done,” she said. “That was the point things were picking up and getting harder, and you start realizing you have to work hard. That was the switch from me being lazy and not wanting to put in all the work.

“It’s hard to imagine my life without this sport and imagine myself without this sport.”

Now she owns a shadowbox full of awards and team pictures that tells her she made the right decision.

Leman has amassed a collection of individual awards in her four years with the DeKalb-Sycamore team – the four first-place medals, a handful of other IHSA State Championships medals and plenty of green street signs declaring that DeKalb is home to a state champion.

The most valued mementos that she owns? Her team picture and the team’s second-place medal, she said.

With her high school career over, Leman will live out another childhood dream. When she was younger, Leman said she was intimidated when attending Northern Illinois meets or when the

Huskies gymnasts would come into her gym to work out.

Now she’s preparing for life as a college gymnast at Lindenwood University, a Division II school outside of

St. Louis.

“I was like, ‘I want to do that,’ ” she said of watching the NIU gymnasts. “I always had that passion behind me to keep me driving to get to this point.”

DeKalb boys, girls win Big 12 indoor titles DAILY CHRONICLE

sports@daily-chronicle.com The DeKalb boys and girls track teams each won the Northern Illinois Big 12 Indoor Conference Championships on Saturday in Sterling.

The girls teams set a trio of meet records in claiming the team title. Kyra Ozier, Bri Buggs, Sierra Long and Mireia Martinez set a meet record in 4 minutes, 13.19 seconds in the 1,600-meter relay. Buggs, Ozier, Martinez and Kmaris Kirkwood set a meet record with a 1:45.38 in the 800 relay. And the 3,200 team of Katherine Olsen, Anaiah Rollins, Cyan McGee and Christina Ryzhov won in a meet-record 10:02.58.

Buggs won the 60 in 7.76 seconds, only 0.02 ahead of runner-up Nicole Sreenan of Kaneland. Sreenan (25.43) won the 200 over second-place Buggs (25.96). Long was second in the 400 in 1:03.65, and Olsen won the 1,600 (5:17.11) ahead of Kaneland’s Rachel

Richtman (5:18.08, good for second).

Brianna Barwick took second in the 60 hurdles in 9.85.

Jasmine Kemp won the high jump, clearing 5 feet, 2 inches. Ashley Nelson was second in the shot put with a toss of 33-1.5.

On the boys side, Tristan Bujaraski won the 60 in 7.07 seconds and was second in the 200 with a 23.38. He also was part of the first-place 800-meter relay, which set a personal record with a 1:33.25 and also included Zurek Day, Veodies Jones and Keonte McKinnie.

Day took second in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.62. Mitchell Bishop was second in the 800 in 2:03.01, and Jacob Trapp was runner-up in the 3,200 in 10:00.63.

The DeKalb boys finished with 86 points, ahead of Yorkville (74) and Geneseo (61). Kaneland was fifth with 55 points, 15 ahead of sixth-place Sycamore. For the girls, DeKalb won with 110, with Yorkville in second (85.5) and

Kaneland third (66). Sycamore was 10th with 10 points.

Daniel Occhipinti was second in the 1,600 for Kaneland in 4:43.51, while Danny Walker won the pole vault for the Knights by clearing 14 feet. The Knights’ 3,200 relay team took third.

Clayton Hannula won the shot put by clearing 55-2.

Connor Weckerly was second in the shot put for the Spartans with a toss of 50-10.

On the girls side, Kaneland had the top two pole vaulters in Cierra Kuipers (11 feet) and Sydney Davidson (10-6).

Kylie Fuererbach took third for Sycamore in the shot put, clearing 33-1.

Third-period blitz adds another chapter to hot stretch

mpotash@suntimes.com CHICAGO – No matter how dire the circumstance, the Blackhawks always think they’re one goal from an onslaught that will save their hide – they’re conditioned to think that way after three Stanley Cups and a number of improbable victories in the Joel Quenneville era.

But for a regular-season game, they might have outdone even themselves this time.

Trailing the last-place Colorado Avalanche by two goals midway through the third period, the Hawks buried the Avs with a historic barrage – three goals in 34 seconds and four in 3:02 –to slingshot their way to a 6-3 victory before 22,070 Sunday night at the United Center.

Jonathan Toews scored the first and last goals of the flurry, and Richard Panik and Artemi Panarin also scored as the Hawks (47-20-5) won for the 17th time in their past 20 games to take a seven-point lead over the fading Minnesota Wild, who lost 5-4 to the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday.

“Toots [Jordin Tootoo] was the first one to say it – we just need one goal to wake us up, give us some energy, get the crowd into it,” said Toews, who has 20 goals and 53 points for the season.

“And we collectively made that decision that we had to play better. We were just looking for that first bounce, and maybe we could put some pressure on them and see if they make a few mistakes, and obviously we got a few bounces around their net to get ahead. Once we got that first one, things started clicking for us.”

The Hawks trailed, 3-1, and appeared headed for a listless loss when they took

advantage of an apparent replay-review break to open the floodgates.

“Anybody in the league who follows hockey knows this team’s done it before and they know to never let their foot off the gas against these great players that are in this room,” said goalie Scott Darling, who kept the Hawks in it with two dazzling saves after the Avs took a 3-1 lead. “We have no quit, and we have

confidence that we’re going to come back. It’s just another reaffirmation that we’re never out of a game.”

Toews scored in front of the net on a deflection of a Duncan Keith shot from the point at 10:17 of the third period.

The play was challenged by the Avalanche for offsides, and replays seemed to clearly indicate that Toews indeed was offside before the puck entering the Hawks’ offensive zone. But officials ruled it a good goal.

“It’s nice to get a break with those calls,” Toews said. “It gave us some energy.”

“I thought it was the right call,” Quenneville said.

Panik scored on a rebound of a Brent Seabrook shot 17 seconds after to tie the game, 3-3. Panarin gave the Hawks the lead 17 seconds after that with a shot that was deflected by Avalanche goaltender Jeremy Smith and went in the goal off Smith’s back at 10:51.

As the crowd was still buzzing over three goals in a 34-second span, Toews beat Smith with a wrist shot to give the Hawks a 5-3 lead at 13:19.

“It was super impressive to watch,” Darling said. “That was the whole thing from my mindset – just keep us in it. I know our team can do something like that and they did. It was pretty impressive.”

UCLA 79, Cincinnati 67: At Sacramento, California, Lonzo Ball scored 19 points and ignited UCLA’s rally from a poor start with nine assists, lifting the third-seeded Bruins to a victory over Cincinnati in the South Regional.

UCLA (31-4) had a hard time solving sixth-seeded Cincinnati’s active defense in the first half, unable to get shots to drop or get out in transition.

The Bruins are headed to their third Sweet 16 appearance in four seasons.

INDIANAPOLIS – Moe Wagner scored a career-high 26 points and spurred a furious second-half rally to send Michigan past second-seeded Louisville, 73-69, Sunday and into the Sweet 16.

The seventh-seeded Wolverines (2611) have won seven straight – six since a frightening plane accident before the Big Ten tournament. They also earned a ticket to the Midwest Regional in Kansas City, Missouri, their first since 2014.

Donovan Mitchell scored 19 points and Deng Adel had 16 points to lead Louisville (25-9), which had made the Sweet 16 in its past four NCAA tournament appearances.

But Wagner bailed out the Wolverines from a poor game.

Trailing 45-36 with 16:09 to play, the German native scored on a layup to start a 17-6 run that gave Michigan its first lead since the opening minutes.

And after Wagner’s 3-pointer broke a 55-55 tie with 6:39 to go, the Wolverines led the rest of the way.

Kansas 90, Michigan St. 70: At Tulsa, Oklahoma, Josh Jackson scored 14 of his 23 points in the second half to help Kansas pull away late and reach the Sweet 16 for a second straight year with a victory over Michigan State.

Frank Mason III added 20 points for the top-seeded Jayhawks (30-4), who have advanced to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament in nine of coach Bill Self’s 14 seasons.

Miles Bridges scored 22 points to lead Michigan State (20-15) despite leaving briefly in the first half with an injury. Nick Ward also finished in double figures with 13 points and Joshua Langford had 10 for the Spartans.

Oregon 75, Rhode Island 72: At Sacramento, California, Tyler Dorsey hit a contested go-ahead 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 38.4 seconds to play, E.C. Matthews airballed a long 3 in the waning moments trying to force overtime and third-seeded Oregon rallied in the second half to beat upstart No. 11 Rhode Island.

Dorsey also tied the score with a 3 with 1:45 remaining on the way to 27 points before teammate Dillon Brooks took a charge on the other end for Oregon (31-5).

Stanford Robinson matched his career-high of 21 points as the Rams (25-10) had their nine-game winning streak snapped to end the season.

24 Bladder pain origin remains mystery Dear Doctor: What can be done about interstitial cystitis, or bladder pain syndrome? I’m told there’s no cause or cure, and that some doctors don’t even believe it exists.

Dear Reader: Interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition of the bladder that’s five times more common in women than men. Patients with interstitial cystitis have pain, pressure or bladder spasms, with symptoms worsening when the bladder is full and improving after voiding. The condition also causes an increase in urinary frequency and urgency.

Because people with these symptoms need to use the bathroom frequently, the condition is extremely disruptive to their lives. Further, these symptoms disrupt sleep in 70 percent of patients, creating feelings of fatigue.

Now let’s look at the cause: a disruption in the cellular lining of the bladder. This disruption allows urinary irritants, or chemicals, to penetrate through the lining of the bladder, affecting both the nerves and muscle of the bladder. The nerve irritation can send feedback to the central nerves of the spine. The spinal cord sends signals to the bladder and pelvis relaying pain information, perpetuating the pain in a back-andforth cycle.

Doctors don’t have a clear understanding of the inciting event that causes this inflammation. Interstitial cystitis may originate from a bladder infection, or from bladder irritants, such as caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods and citrus. I’ve seen enough patients with this syndrome to know that interstitial cystitis, or as some call it, chronic bladder pain, is very much real. That said, other causes for the symptoms must be ruled out, requiring urine tests to check for infection or even directly visualizing the bladder with cystoscopy. The first treatment step is to eliminate behaviors and foods/drinks that irritate the bladder, meaning stopping all consumption of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco. You can also

ASK THE DOCTORS Robert Ashley consider the restriction of spicy foods and citrus. The second step would be to consider behavioral modification to decrease the frequency of urination. One study, published in the Journal of Urology, showed that diet and behavioral changes decreased symptoms in 45 percent of patients.

Physical therapy with a therapist who specializes in interstitial cystitis can relieve some of the pain in the pelvic region by working on tender areas and increasing muscle stability in the lower abdomen. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Urology showed a 59 percent decrease in symptoms compared to 26 percent who did general therapeutic massage.

Amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant with multiple uses beyond depression, has potential as well. In a 2010 Journal of Urology study, the drug -- given at 50 milligrams -- was shown to decrease symptoms in 55 percent of patients with interstitial cystitis. The problem is that many patients cannot tolerate the side effects of this dose, so I would consider doses of 10 milligrams to 20 milligrams.

Pentosan polysulfate sodium, which seems to protect the lining of the bladder, may help as well, and the sedating antihistamine hydroxyzine can aid patients who have symptoms of pain and frequency of urination during the night.

While interstitial cystitis is not a well-understood disease, it is certainly a diagnosable condition.

South’s two-diamond rebid was New Minor Forcing, showing at least game-invitational values and asking partner to describe his hand further.

Three spades was game-forcing, promising a long suit. North liked his maximum with three aces, so control-bid four clubs. (With an unappealing hand, he would have settled for four spades.) South used Roman Key Card Blackwood and jumped to six spades when he learned that his partner had two aces and the spade king or three aces.

Things looked grim, but hoping for the best, South ran the spade queen. When it won, declarer realized that if trumps were 2-2, he was safe; but if West had started with three trumps, South had to find him with exactly 3-3-3-4 distribution and the club king.

Declarer played a heart to the ace, ruffed a heart, crossed to the spade ace (bad news), ruffed another heart, cashed his other two diamond tricks and exited with a spade to West’s king. Good news -- West had to lead a club away from the king. South won with his queen and claimed his very lucky slam.
