Bond increased for woman READER POLL charged with her 5th DUI

By STEPHANIE MARKHAM smarkham@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A judge increased bond to $200,000 Friday for a Cortland woman facing a fifth driving under the influence charge after causing a head-on collision on Peace Road early Sunday.

Nichole R. Senatre, 32, of the first block of South Prairie Street, faces multiple charges including aggravated driving under the influence in connection with the crash.

Police said Senatre was driving a stolen vehicle south on Peace when she crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with another vehicle, injuring herself and the other driver.

Senatre’s bond was set at $50,000 Monday by Judge Robbin Stuckert.

During a hearing Friday, Judge Philip Montgomery denied a request from State’s Attorney Rick Amato to deny bond to Senatre and instead increased her bond amount to $200,000.

Senatre will now have to post $20,000 bail to be released instead of $5,000. An electronic home monitoring device and a continuous alcohol monitoring bracelet also will be required.

She has previously said she did not have $5,000 to post.

SYCAMORE – Sycamore Area Indivisible will be hosting a forum Sunday for Sycamore candidates in the upcoming election.

The forum will be for candidates for mayor, city clerk, City Council, Sycamore School District 427 board and Sycamore Township.

The forum will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Sycamore Public Library, 103 E. State St. Sycamore has a three-way race for mayor, with candidates Candy Smith, Curt Lang and Rick Kramer running for the post.

If convicted of the most serious charge, a fifth DUI offense, Nichole she could face four to 15 years Senatre in prison. She was sentenced to prison after her fourth DUI conviction in 2007, records show.

Amato argued that Senatre should be required to remain in jail for the safety of the community.

The crash Sunday marks the third time Senatre has been accused of causing a crash while driving under the influence. Her driving privileges already have been revoked for life.

Charles Criswell of the DeKalb County Public Defender’s Office argued an electronic home monitoring device would be sufficient to ensure Senatre would not be putting the public in danger while awaiting trial.

Montgomery said he agreed with the defense that denying bail should be reserved for serious violent offenses; however, he increased the bond amount because Senatre is at a high risk to reoffend, having had multiple DUI charges.

Senatre is next scheduled to appear in court May 5.

DeKalb High School’s Marching Barbs parade through Dublin

By JULIA SPAHN news@daily-chronicle.com DUBLIN – Members of the DeKalb High School Marching Barbs fulfilled two years worth of planning and practice as they marched in the 2017 St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Friday.

An estimated crowd of 500,000 people lined the parade route through the center of Dublin, past Trinity College and St. Patrick’s Cathedral, finishing just before St. Stephen’s Green. In addition to the crowd, viewers tuned in from around the world, including many at DeKalb High School. The 100 band members left DeKalb on Sunday and have spent the week awed by many of the things they’ve experienced. “[I’m] excited,” senior Franny Plagwitz said before the start of the parade.

“Kind of tired, but excited to play with my friends. I’m excited to see the other bands. I saw a Bahamas high school band – I didn’t even know they had high school bands in the Bahamas. It’s really cool.” She estimated that she’d had only about six hours of sleep the night before.

Her sister, Misha, agreed. “I’m cold but excited to be in my first parade abroad,” she said. “I’ve seen people from all over the world here. It’s been great and I love it.”

The band members worked to raise money to pay for their weeklong trip, during which they’ve performed at and explored areas from Blarney Castle in the southern part of Ireland, to Belfast in Northern Ireland more than 250 miles away. For many band members, it was their first trip abroad, and a chance to learn firsthand about another culture and stretch themselves personally.

But Friday’s march through Dublin was their big moment, and they’ll return to DeKalb on Sunday evening with an award for best junior band, which they received from the St. Patrick’s Day Parade organizers. The band will play a final concert in Dublin on Saturday evening before returning home.

Joseph Laskowski, a junior baritone player, said he was so eager to perform Friday that he only slept for four hours the night before.

“I had anxiety,” Laskowski said. “I was pumped for today. It’s a big thing for me.”

spite the long journey and long days, “they got up, they were ready to go.

They had all of their uniform parts last night when we checked and everybody seems really excited. I think they’ve been very accommodating here in Ireland, and in general, I think the kids have enjoyed the food so far.”

Drum Major Meghan Hansen said she, too, was confident in her musicians.

“I haven’t been worried about these guys. There’s a reason why it’s this group that’s going [on this trip],” she Steve Lundin said the trip has gone kids enjoyed some of the historic stuff, said. “[Band Director Steve] Lundin very well. because, I think, in general when it’s in trusts us. Ex-gym instructor pleads not guilty in sex abuse case

By STEPHANIE MARKHAM smarkham@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A former gymnastics instructor accused of sexually abusing girls at Energym in Sycamore where he worked pleaded not guilty Friday to charges that carry a potential penalty of life in prison.

Joseph R. Hannon, 22, formerly of the 1700 block of DeKalb Avenue, was arrested Dec. 7 on allegations that he inappropriately touched a 9-year-old girl at the gym, an incident police said was caught on video.

Later that month, prosecutors filed more serious charges related to a sec-

ond victim, another 9-year-old girl.

Additional charges were filed in February after investigators conducted more victim-sensitive interviews. The Joseph R. total number of alleged Hannon victims is now six, all of them girls younger than age 13 who were students at Energym in Sycamore.

Hannon appeared in DeKalb County Court on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to aggravated criminal sexual abuse and predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

He remains in custody at the DeKalb County Jail with bond set at $1 million.

He would have to post $100,000 bail to be released.

If convicted of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child involving more than one victim, Hannon could be sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or probation.

The charges of aggravated criminal sexual abuse are punishable with sentences of three to seven years in prison.

Hannon had been arrested several times in DeKalb County and was on felony probation for an October 2013 drug case when he was hired at Energym.

The family of a girl who police believe was abused by Hannon has filed a civil suit against Energym Gymnastics Inc., the gym’s owner, Andy Morreale, and Hannon alleging negligence. Morreale has said Hannon was hired without a background check.

Hannon had taken classes at Energym, which has locations in Sycamore and Genoa, as a child. Energym hired him part time in September 2015 as a student instructor and as a full-time employee in August. Morreale also rented an apartment to Hannon near the gym.

Hannon is next scheduled to appear in court May 4.

League of Women Voters President Kay Shelton.

After the forum, there will be a brief presentation on a referendum on the ballot to increase the tax rate for health services.

She was born to Douglas Franklin and Margaret Ann (Gore) Best on July 10, 1959 in Denver, CO. On October 25, 1980, she married Howard Metcalf in Wheaton, IL. She is survived by her husband, Howard; children, Alexandra (Nate) Guzman of IL and South Korea, Benjamin Metcalf of Stillman Valley, IL, and Howard Clayton “Clay” Metcalf of Kirkland, IL; grandchildren, Madalyn and Brooklyn Guzman; step-grandson, Ryli Guzman; parents, Doug and Margaret Best of Conover, WI; siblings, Douglas (Maureen) Best, Jr. of MA and Chris (Al) LaRose of Na-

perville, IL; several nieces and nephews.

He loved the KU Jayhawks. He also enjoyed golfing, wood burning, cooking, and gardening. Don appreciated all kinds of weather; during storms, he would sit out on the porch to watch the lightening and relished the warm, dry days to ride his Harley.

He is survived by his loving family; wife of 29 years, Raenna; daughters, Cari (Keith), Taylor (Robert); Morgan (fiancé Mike) and DONALD L. NEAL Lindsey. DeKALB – Despite the closures of the chain’s other Illinois locations and a fire that caused $10,000 in damage to the building, Toppers Pizza at 1015 W. Lincoln Highway will be reopening Saturday.

The Wisconsin-based pizza chain closed its five Illinois locations in DeKalb, the South Loop, the West Loop, Wrigleyville and Bucktown to focus on growing in other states, according to a statement from Toppers CEO Scott Gittrich.

DeKalb’s store closed Feb. 23. The next day, police said a former employee broke into the restaurant, stole food and caused a fire.

Since then, Steve Leffler, owner of Suburban Tire Auto Repair Center stores in St. Charles, Oswego, Hanover Park and Roselle, has been working with DeKalb officials to reopen the business.

Contractor picked for water treatment plant project

By DREW ZIMMERMAN dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Loves Park-based N-Trak Group LLC was selected by the DeKalb Sanitary District board for the demolition of 19 houses on Hollister Avenue as part of the district’s $52 million improvement plan for its water treatment plant.

This project will keep the nearly 100-year-old facility in compliance with new Environmental Protection Agency regulations.

The Hollister houses, which are owned by the district, will be torn down and replaced by a new administration building near Sycamore Road, new operations buildings, parking lots and roadways leading to the plant and its facilities.

N-Trak came in with the low bid at $89,840. DeKalb Sanitary District Executive Director Mark Eddington said that the original estimate for the project was $250,000.

“We’re very pleased with this bid,” Eddington said.

He added that the district still is evaluating bids on the plant’s modernization, estimated at $52 million. The lowest bid came from Peoria-based Williams Brothers Construction at

DeKALB – This spring, the Kishwaukee United Way will be starting a 24-hour access line to connect area residents with community, social, government and health service agencies.

The 211 line, which has been a nationwide initiative, has been discussed in DeKalb County for years, but the United Way recently acquired the funding for a four-year pilot program.

KishHealth System, which is now a part of Northwestern Medicine, First Midwest Bank, DeKalb County Community Foundation, DeKalb Township, Northern Illinois University and the Kishwaukee United Way have all donated money to this project. ‘“The concept is to be able to help make it easier to gain access to free health and human services that are available from various agencies, but that the public may not find easily on their own,” said Kishwaukee United Way board member Paul Callighan.

“They’d be able to get connected to a 24-hour operator who can help direct people to particular services. There will also be a web-based component to it.”

Kishwaukee United Way Executive Director Dawn Littlefield said the community gained awareness of the program after the April 2015 tornado that devastated Fairdale.

About 60 agencies have signed on to be involved with the service, and the service line will include a translator for 159 languages, she said.

“The ultimate goal is to better connect people who need help to the help that they need,” Littlefield said.

Calls would be directed to Path Crisis Center in Bloomington.

“There are people who are trained in disaster prevention, suicide prevention and other emergency services,” Littlefield said. “There’s not someone on the other end unable to handle crisis calls.”

She added that the United Way is hoping to have the 211 line running in May, depending on how long it takes for the telecommunications system to transfer all calls coming through.

Republicans oppose Great Lakes cuts

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – It sounds like an idea that would warm a conservative Republican’s heart: Kill funding of a regional environmental cleanup that has lasted seven years and cost the federal government more than $2 billion, with no end in sight. If states want to keep the program going, let them pick up the tab.

That is what President Donald Trump’s 2018 budget plan proposes for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, an ambitious push to fix problems that have long bedeviled the world’s largest surface freshwater system – from invasive species to algal blooms and toxic sludge fouling tributary rivers.

During the Obama administration, the program generally got about $300 million a year. Trump’s offer is zero.

His spending plan released Thursday says it “returns the responsibility for funding local environmental efforts and programs to state and local entities, allowing EPA to focus on its highest national priorities.”

The response from Republicans in Great Lakes states: No, thanks.

Caterpillar hires ex-U.S. attorney general after raid

PEORIA – Caterpillar Inc. is hiring a former U.S. attorney general to help it sort out matters that sparked a federal raid on its headquarters in central Illinois.

William P. Barr will serve as outside counsel to the large equipment manufacturer. He will help Caterpillar review and address issues relating to Caterpillar SARL, a Swiss parts subsidiary, and tax-saving practices.

Problems with Caterpillar SARL have dogged the company for eight years, sparking a Senate investigation, shareholder lawsuits, and proposed taxes and penalties totaling $2 billion.

Woman headed to prison 15 years after sentencing

CHAMPAIGN – An Urbana woman is being put behind bars 15 years after she was sentenced to prison.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported that 44-year-old Aretha L. Baughman was arrested this week in Champaign County after a probation officer learned she was wanted on a 2002 warrant.

Baughman had been arrested on drug charges in 2000 and placed on probation as part of a plea bargain. After she violated her probation, she was ordered to return to court for resentencing in October 2002. When she didn’t show up, a judge sentenced her to six years in prison and issued a warrant for her arrest.

Convicted subcontractor given 12-month sentence

CHICAGO – A 12-month prison sentence has been handed to a woman convicted of helping a general contractor falsely claim it was fulfilling a Chicago requirement to hire women-owned companies for city work.

Elizabeth Perino of Willowbrook was convicted by a federal jury in June on three counts of wire fraud and one count of mail fraud.

Lawyers for the 62-year-old Perino sought probation and home confinement.

But U.S. District Judge Gary Feinerman on Thursday said he opted for prison to send a message to “an industry that needs to clean up its act.”

Federal prosecutors contended Perino falsified paperwork to suggest her company, Perdel Contracting Co., would perform work on the projects when it did not.

Woman accused of forging petitions for college board

WHEATON –Prosecutors in DuPage County said that a woman submitted forged petitions to earn a seat on a college board of trustees.

In a news release, DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced that 61-year-old Rafath Waheed of Lisle was charged with two felony counts of issuing a forged document and two felony counts of perjury.

Waheed is accused of making photocopies of completed signature portions of petitions, completing the candidate information by hand and then notorized those petitions as authentic in an effort to secure a spot on the College of DuPage board of trustees.

Waheed turned herself in to authorities Wednesday night and was released after posting $1,000 bond.

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump defiantly refused to back down Friday from his explosive claim that Barack Obama wiretapped his phones, and sidestepped any blame for the White House decision to highlight an unverified report that Britain helped carry out the alleged surveillance.

In brushing off the diplomatic row with perhaps America’s closest ally, Trump also revived another: the Obama administration’s monitoring of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s calls.

“At least we have something in common, perhaps,” Trump quipped during a joint news conference with Merkel.

Merkel, who was making her first visit to the White House since Trump took office, looked surprised by the president’s comment, which he appeared primed to deliver.

Earth sizzles to near record heat in February

WASHINGTON – Even without an El Nino warming the world’s waters, Earth in February sizzled to its second hottest temperature on record, behind only last year.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration calculated that February 2017 averaged 55.66 degrees. That’s 1.76 degrees warmer than the

20th century average.

It also was the second hottest winter in the northern hemisphere on record. Records go back to 1880.

In the past, Earth doesn’t come near record heat if there’s no El Nino. This year it did – on every continent.

NOAA climate scientist Ahira Sanchez-Lugo called it clear evidence of climate change.

She calculated that the rate of February warming since 1980 is twice as high as since 1880.

Cholesterol drug cuts heart risks, spurs debate

A long-acting cholesterol medicine cut the risk of having a heart attack or some other serious problems by 15 percent to 20 percent in a big study that’s likely to spur fresh debate about what drugs should cost.

Statins such as Lipitor and Crestor are cheap and lower LDL or bad cholesterol, but some people can’t tolerate or get enough help from them. The new drug, Amgen’s Repatha, is given as a shot once or twice a month and is part of a novel class of medicines that drop LDL to unprecedented levels.

It costs more than $14,000 a year, and insurers have balked at paying without proof that it lowers heart risks, not just the cholesterol number.

Trump OKs changes in GOP health care bill The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump agreed to add fresh Medicaid curbs to the House Republican health care bill Friday, bolstering the measure with support from some conservative lawmakers but leaving its prospects wobbly.

House leaders discussed other amendments calibrated to round up votes and scheduled a showdown vote Thursday.

“I just want to let the world know I am 100 percent in favor” of the measure, Trump said at the White House after meeting around a dozen House lawmakers and shaking hands on revisions.

“We’re going to have a health care plan that’s going to be second to none.”

While the rapid-fire events seemed to build momentum for the pivotal GOP legislation, its fate remained clouded. One leading House conservative said the alterations were insufficient and claimed enough allies to sink the measure, and support among moderates remained uncertain.

“My whip count indicates that there are 40 no’s,” enough to defeat the bill, said Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., who leads the hard-line House Freedom Caucus. He said the change “doesn’t move the ball more than a couple yards on a very long playing field.”

Across the Capitol, Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., facing re-election next year, became the fourth Republican senator to announce his opposition.

That left Senate GOP leaders at least two votes shy of what they’d need to prevail.

Congressional Democrats remain solidly opposed to the GOP effort.

The Republican bill would kill much of former President Barack Obama’s health care law, including tax penalties for people who don’t buy insurance and its expansion of Medicaid, the federal-state health program for the poor.

It would create new tax credits that would be less generous than current federal subsidies for many consumers, and repeal levies on the wealthy and medical firms that helped finance Obama’s expansion of coverage to 20 million Americans.

Trump’s deal with lawmakers would let states impose work requirements on some of Medicaid’s roughly 60 million recipients. The condition would apply to healthy people with no dependents, a White House official said.

The agreement would let states accept lump-sum federal payments for Medicaid, instead of an amount that would grow with the number of beneficiaries. The program

currently costs the federal government about $370 billion annually and covers costs no matter the amounts.

Also, any additional states that expand Medicaid would not receive the additional federal money Obama’s law provided them for doing so. Thirty-one states have enlarged their Medicaid rolls under the law.

“These changes definitely strengthen our numbers,” said the House GOP’s top vote counter, Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, among Trump’s guests Friday. “But they also show that President Trump is all-in now” to help win converts.

Those accepting the agreement included Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., leader of the Republican Study Committee, a large group of House conservatives.

It seemed clear that GOP leaders remained short of the 216 votes they’ll need, and additional changes were in the works.

Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., said he’d been assured by House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., that the bill’s tax credit would be adjusted to focus more benefits on lower-income people.

Lundin said students were impressed with the castles they visited, but “some were too afraid to kiss the Blarney stone.”

“There were a few that I’d hope would kiss it, because there are a few that could use [the gift of gab], but that didn’t happen,” he said.

Ethan Skaret, a sophomore, was surprised to see cultural differences. “[In Ireland] people are more polite to each other,” he said. “In the U.S. people act like friends, but here it’s more formal, and I really like that.”

He said he enjoyed trying the different food, especially fish and chips.

“I was really surprised about the taste of the food,” he said. “It’s really good. I had heard bad things, so I was worried.”

Sophomore Brendan Szostak not only had to face a fear of flying, he had never traveled out of the country be-

fore this trip.

“I would tell people to go abroad again,” he said. “It’s kind of fun to see how others act and to see their culture.”

Jacob Hanson agreed. The sophomore said he worked for two years to be able to take the trip. It also was his first time traveling outside of the U.S. He said the experience was important.

WASHINGTON – Meals on Wheels, the popular service that provides food to the elderly, faces a sharp funding cut under President Donald Trump’s budget proposal, drawing protests from congressional Republicans and Democrats.

The exact size of the cut is unknown, but White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said the government “can’t spend money on programs just because they sound good – and great.”

“Meals on Wheels sounds great. Again, that’s a state decision to fund that particular portion, to take the federal money and give it to the states, and say look, we want to give you money for programs that don’t work,” Mulvaney said.

Mulvaney’s comments Thursday caused consternation at the Capitol and beyond as lawmakers from both parties vowed to protect the program, which serves nearly a million meals a day nationwide

overseen by the Health and Human Services Department.

Trump’s budget cuts HHS spending by about 16.2 percent, but does not include a line item for the Older Americans Act or Meals on Wheels.

The budget also eliminates the $3 billion community block grant program, which some communities use to supplement Meals on Wheels and provide safety checks for the elderly. It was not clear how much of the block-grant funding goes to Meals on Wheels, since decisions are made by states and local governments.

“The problem with a ‘skinny budget’ is that it is lean on details,” said Ellie Hollander, president and CEO of Meals on Wheels America, referring to a term commonly used on Capitol Hill to describe Trump’s bare-bones budget document.

Still, “cuts of any kind to these highly successful and leveraged programs would be a devastating blow to our ability to provide much-needed care for millions of vulnerable seniors in America,” Holland-

Thumbs-down to FOIA fight Thumbs-down: To news that the Obama administration in its final year spent a record $36.2 million on legal costs defending its refusal to turn over federal records under the Freedom of Information Act, according to an Associated Press analysis of new U.S. data.

Today marks the end of Sunshine Week, a week devoted to the importance of public records being kept public. It never has been a partisan issue, but the trend of government using taxpayer dollars to hide records from those same taxpayers continues to be disturbing and the fight will go on.

Thumbs-up: To the DeKalb High School Marching Barbs. After two years spent fundraising, 100 student musicians made the trip to Ireland this week and performed in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin. While the Barbs have marched in many a parade, this performance is probably the one they will remember most. Congratulations to the students, advisers and parents for representing DeKalb overseas with class.

Thumbs-up: To providing prom dresses for students. DeKalb High School’s Black Student Union partnered with that of Northern Illinois University’s Black Student Union to make 25 dresses available to students in need this week, with 22 more dresses becoming available after spring break. We’re pleased to see students working together to help their peers in need. No one should be left out of a special evening with friends because of their family’s income.

Thumbs-down: To more tuition hikes.

Next school year, tuition and fees will rise a combined 10.6 percent at Kishwaukee College, to $156 a credit hour, up from $141 this school year. Of course the college has expenses – largely personnel – to pay. State funding for programs such as the Monetary Assistance Program and general aid has been uneven and sometimes nonexistent. But a hike of more than 10 percent is a considerable bite for people, especially those students who may be struggling to make ends meet while working toward an associate degree. If the cost of higher education continues to far outpace the rate of inflation, people will be priced out. That’s not a recipe for success for our state or our country.

Federal marijuana crackdown ill-advised We’re disappointed White House press secretary Sean Spicer recently said “greater enforcement” of federal drug laws, including prohibition of marijuana, is coming.

“There’s a federal law that we need to abide by when it comes to recreational marijuana and other drugs of that nature,” he said.

This, at a time when a majority of Americans support not only limiting federal enforcement of marijuana laws but outright legalizing the drug.

Such a move would run counter to multiple statements by Donald Trump on the campaign trail. “(In) terms of marijuana and legalization, I think that should be a state issue, state-by-state,” he said, for example, during a campaign rally Oct. 29, 2015.

From a constitutional perspective, this is the most sensible and pragmatic approach to marijuana.

Nowhere in the U.S. Constitution is there a provision granting the federal government the authority to prohibit intoxicants. In America’s prior engagement with the fol-

ly of prohibition, that of alcohol, proponents of prohibition at least had the decency to seek and obtain a narrowly worded constitutional amendment, the 18th Amendment, to justify federal intervention.

This hasn’t been true of marijuana or other drugs.

Voters in most states that have been presented a ballot initiative on marijuana legalization have opted to approve it. Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and the District of Columbia have approved outright legalization for medicinal and recreational use, while a majority of states have approved marijuana for medicinal use.

Most Americans are simply ready to be done with the issue.

A Quinnipiac poll released last month found 71 percent of Americans opposed to the enforcement of federal laws against marijuana in states that have legalized it for recreational or medicinal purposes.

This includes 55 percent of Republicans, 72 percent of independents and 80 percent of Democrats.

A renewal of a failed and constitutionally dubious federal crackdown on marijuana is simply not a priority of the American public.

Gone are the days of reefer madness and even “Just Say No,” with legalization, taxation and regulation seen as a more efficacious and just means of combating the harms of marijuana use, while respecting the freedom of individual choice.

We encourage the federal government to take a hands-off approach toward marijuana.

Meanwhile, we support efforts in Congress to remove marijuana from federal control.

The pretense of federal marijuana prohibition – that arresting users, growers and sellers of marijuana will prevent use of the drug – has long been shown to be nothing more than a harmful delusion that has criminalized far too many people.

We encourage President Trump to do the right thing and allow states to make their own choices.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Monday, The New York Times ran the headline “What Happens When You Fight a ‘Deep State’ that Doesn’t Exist?”

The article explained that unlike Egypt or Pakistan, America doesn’t really have a powerful deep state, and to claim that it does “presents apolitical civil servants as partisan agents.”

Give me a break. “Apolitical civil servants”?

A deep state absolutely exists.

Some call it “administrative state” or “regulatory state.” These are the people who crush innovation and freedom by issuing hundreds of new rules. Regulators, if they don’t pass new rules, think they’re not doing their job.

Even “anti-regulator” President George W. Bush hired 90,000 new regulators.

Calling them “nonpartisan” doesn’t make them harmless – it just means we put up with them through multiple administrations.

Even if you exclude the military and post office, more than 20 million Americans work for the government.

Because of civil service rules, it’s almost

impossible to fire them.

The Times calls these 20 million people “apolitical.” Please. Most are just as partisan as you or I. Maybe more so, as leaks and signs of bureaucratic resistance to presidential edicts demonstrate.

People who choose to work for, say, the EPA, tend to be environment zealots. This should surprise no one.

Somehow, New York Times reporters don’t see it.

‘Chief of EPA bucks studies’

Speaking of the EPA and the Times, their front page claimed President Donald Trump appointee Scott Pruitt is “at odds with the established scientific consensus.” That makes Pruitt sound like an anti-science idiot.

But the headline is bunk.

Pruitt only said that he does not agree that man is “the primary contributor to global warming.”

That’s “at odds” with Times reporters and government flunkies on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, but many scientists say there is so much uncertainty to climate measurements that no one can know if man’s greenhouse gases are the “primary” cause of warming.

The earth warmed similarly last century, well before we emitted so much carbon dioxide.

John Oliver

British comedian John Oliver hosts one of the better political talk shows.

He’s like Bill Maher, but funnier and not as mean.

Yesterday on an airplane, I watched an episode that led with a report on the chaos in Venezuela.

I perked up, expecting Oliver to at least mention Venezuela’s caps on corporate profits, abolition of property rights, media censorship, regulation of car production “from the factory door to the place of sale,” etc. In other words: socialism.

But no, Oliver didn’t mention any of that.

He mocked President Maduro’s speeches but said Venezuela was in trouble because its economy depends on oil and oil prices dropped.

What?

Kuwait, Nigeria, Angola and other countries exported more oil than Venezuela. But they survived the price drop without experiencing the misery that Venezuela suffers. The suffering was created by socialism.

America’s leftists cannot see the horrors of socialism even when they are right in front of them.

Ban on Muslins, collusion with Russia a concern To the Editor: There are at least two bothersome things about the president, Donald Trump. His call for a Muslim ban is one. The other is his alleged reckless collusion with the Russians.

First, to keep America safe, Donald Trump is more than eager to ban Muslims from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Sudan, Yemen and Somalia.

The issue: Not one person or group from this list of countries has wreaked any destruction in this country – ever. There is another list: Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Indonesia and Dubai. These countries, populated by “hordes” of Muslims, are not on Trump’s list.

Why? Donald Trump owns hotels and other property investments in those countries. Apparently, he doesn’t want to

rock the boat.

ISIS recruits are supposed to be more of a danger when they come from Saudi Arabia and the UAE than Muslim countries assigned to his first list, a fake to be sure.

Clearly, Trump values his real estate investments. If he had the safety of Americans at heart, why isn’t Saudi Arabia on the list?

Second, Trump has been allegedly colluding with the Russians for at least the past two years. The Russians have already admitted to secretly trolling the recent U.S. elections with the knowledge of the Trump administration.

Everyone knows it, except for his hardcore base, and they are still too busy waving their “we won” election placards.

Take that, America. Our country is now being force-fed the rules of autocracy.

Is this what Americans signed up for when they voted for this guy? There is talk of investigations into allegations of the Russian connection, but it will not advance at any serious pace until the GOP comes to terms with it. At least Attorney General Jeff Sessions has agreed to step aside.

When is the GOP going to get the backbone to confront an autocratic president? All of us, Democrats, Republicans and independents, need to put a stop to the presidential me-first tantrums, to the constant fake whining about the press, and to his trumped-up charges of danger lurking among tax-paying immigrants.

It isn’t presidential. The word “autocracy” appears nowhere in the Constitution, that beloved document, the one in constant danger of being fracked. Weren’t we all trying to avoid this kind of national leader in the first place? Sad, so sad.

To the Editor: Shelly [Skau] said [in a March 13 letter to the editor] she just wants to hear U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Illinois, speak so she has a better understanding of his positions. She should know full well where he stands on ACA, deportation, etc. if she would only have taken the

time to see him speak on Fox News, Fox Business News, WGN, WLS, Meet the Press or Donald Trump at his town hall meetings and rallies that were not disrupted or canceled by paid protesters and thugs well before the election.

The Republicans ran on smaller government and repeal of Obamacare. I’m sure she was too busy listening to MSNBC, CNN, CBS, NBC and the left telling her that Trump had no chance of winning.

Now she and the Democrats have nothing left to do but lick their wounds and make as much noise as they can. The Republicans ran on a platform and that platform is what cost the Democrats an election.

Do you really think if you got up on your soap box you could change their minds?

As this week’s storm approached the East Coast, the media reverted to breathless hype: “monster storm ... very dangerous.”

Here I blame my beloved free market: Predicting scary weather works.

Viewers tune in.

What galls me more is the reporters’ government-centric thinking.

“Everything is closed,” they say.

“Employees can’t get to work.”

But the corner grocery stayed open.

So did many gas stations and restaurants.

Why is it that when government buildings close, so many private businesses stay open? Because their own money is at stake.

The store’s employees probably make less money than government workers.

They are less likely to own all-wheeldrive cars. But they get to work. Some sleep there. Their own money is on the line.

Reporters don’t think about the distinction.

eKALB – Fabian Lopez had the type of season many wrestlers would love to have to end their high school careers with – 46 wins, a spot in a state championship bout and outstanding wrestler honors at a conference tournament.

For Lopez, it was only a good start.

The DeKalb freshman finished the season 43-6 at 120 pounds, taking second at the Class 3A state tournament.

He is the 2017 Daily Chronicle Wrestler of the Year.

“As a freshman, they were high, and I exceeded some expectations,” Lopez said.

“Sophomore year, I think I’m going to exceed a lot more and go for a state title next year.”

First-year DeKalb coach Sam Hiatt said it was a great season for Lopez.

“Not too many people have a year like that overall,” Hiatt said. “But to end the year as a runner-up (at state) and do it as a freshman, being able to have a chance to wrestle in a final, is stuff very few people do. It was definitely a special one.”

Lopez, who had a stretch in the middle of the season in which he suffered most of his losses – said if he could re-do one match, it would be the finale against Plainfield East’s Michael McGee. The senior won by a tech fall, 19-3.

Lopez said it wasn’t so much that he felt he would win a rematch, he just said he thinks the match could have been much closer.

“I definitely wish I could go back and do more different things,” Lopez said. “Do I think I would have won the match?

I honestly don’t think so, because he has maturity and experience over me. I definitely would have liked to make

it closer, so I would not have been embarrassed like that.”

Lopez kept racking up wins in tournaments all season, and won throughout the postseason – he was conference, regional and sectional champ. He said none of those stages compared to U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington and the finale.

He said the experience will help him in his quest for a title next year.

“Even though all those lights are on you, you have to go out there and wrestle your match,” Lopez said. “I almost caught him for a little bit, then I heard the roar of the crowd and got overexcited.

I got turned and tech failed.

You just have to wrestle your match, even if it’s a big crowd like that. No matter where you are, you just have to wrestle your match.”

Hunt signs with WIU Spartans senior signs her National Letter of Intent

SYCAMORE – Cassie Hunt liked Western Illinois’ campus, the coaching staff and the general way she felt when she was there.

The fact her high school coach played there was, as she put it, a coincidence.

The Sycamore senior right side hitter and setter signed her National Letter of Intent on Friday to continue her career with the Leathernecks.

“I really liked the coaches and the team,” Hunt said. “When I vis-

ited there, it really seemed like where I was supposed to be. And my coach also went there. It was kind of an easy decision.”

Hunt said she knew her coach with the Spartans, Jennifer Charles, went there during her playing days – she graduated in 2007. But Hunt said that wasn’t a factor in her decision, and Charles said she didn’t push any particular school.

“I wanted her to decide on her own,” Charles said. “When she said she was thinking about Western, I told her to go down there and check out the campus and see if she liked it. Then she sent me an email and said she loved it.”

Hunt said she also looked at Wisconsin-Parkside and the University of Indianapolis, both NCAA Division II schools, but said she did like the idea of playing at a D-I program.

“I think I would have more fun and enjoy being able to play at a level like that and everything that goes into it,” Hunt said.

For Charles, Hunt is the third signing in her two years as coach of the program and the first D-I signing. Last year, Val Hunt signed with North Central, and went on to earn all-conference honors. Earlier this year, Sycamore senior outside hitter Maizy Larson signed with Waubonsie.

“It’s a treat to see these girls go off and play somewhere that they really want to go to,” Charles said.

Harnish shares experiences during career day

By EDDIE CARIFIO ecarifio@shawmedia.com MALTA – When Chandler Harnish gives speeches to youth – as he did to a group of eighth-graders Friday at Kishwaukee College as part of Career Exploration Day – it’s not all about the NFL and Andrew Luck and the bowl games he played in at Northern Illinois.

The former Huskies quarterback also talks about mistakes he has made to make a point about learning from failures, and also as a way of relating to the audience.

“They look at you as an NFL football player and you’ve achieved everything, but you want to show them that, ‘Hey, I’ve been through the same situations,’ “ Harnish said. “I’ve had some bad actions, some bad consequences in my life. And a lot of these kids have probably done it, or have pressure in their life at the moment. So I want to connect and show them that I’m real.”

About 1,200 students attended the career expo between Thursday and Friday at the college, said Kayte Hamel, Kishwaukee College director of marketing and public relations. They were divided into groups of interest, with Harnish representing athletics.

He spoke for about 20 minutes to two groups of 30 to 40 students each from communities including DeKalb,

Much of Harnish’s speech focused on the three unique traits in the pro athletes he has known: They were goal-oriented, had high integrity and were different. He challenged the students to go home and write down a list of three goals they wanted to accomplish, then keep that list somewhere where they could see it every day – something his NIU teammate and NFL first-round draft pick Larry English did.

As for integrity, he said it matters how someone acts when they think no one is watching – adding that someone actually might be watching. He said that being different also was key, giving an example of doing extra work in your chosen sport or activity – an extra 30 minutes of music practice, or spending an extra hour shooting free throws or watching game film.

“It’s in my soul, part of my footprint I want to leave,” Harnish said. “My

parents raised me to be everything and more, and really just leave a positive impact and be a beacon of light for people. The Lord has given me certain talents and has put me in the position to use those talents.”

During a question-and-answer session, Harnish was asked about Luck, the first pick in the same 2012 draft in which Harnish was the last pick – both by the Colts. Harnsih told the student he and Luck still are friends.

He also talked about mistakes he had made. He said while in high school in Indiana, he was caught at a party that had alcohol when he was 16. He also brought up his benching in the Huskies’ season opener in 2010. He had said he was “walking around like the big man on campus” at the time and that it hurt when it happened.

He stressed to the students that learning from mistakes is a pivotal part of life – pointing out that everyone makes mistakes sooner or later.

“It helps kids realize I’m a real person; I put my pants on the same way as they do,” Harnish said. “It allows them to be more engaged and allows them to take down a barrier.

“At the end of the day, what I want to do is motivate kids, but I also want to kind of help them grow up a little bit and understand it’s time to start making decisions for themselves and to start thinking about their future.”

“We know for sure how good he is, and he knows he can do that now,” Hiatt said. “I think he can do it, but it’s going to take a lot of work. Just looking at the rankings after state, if you’re a 3A state champ, you’re one of the best in the country. It’s not an easy task, but I think he can do it.”

“It didn’t feel like one of my better routines, so I didn’t expect it,” said Carter, who was named second team all-MAC this week. “When I saw the score, I was really happy.”

Now the Huskies are looking for another chance at history at the MAC Championships. After narrowly missing out on the regular-season championship, NIU is looking for its first top-two finish in program history.

Last season, the Huskies qualified four individuals for the NCAA Regionals – along with two alternates – but they said they want to qualify as a team, which is something they haven’t done since 1995.

“We have really good depth, and our skill level across the board is up,” Morreale said.

Bulls drop 1st game with Wade sidelined

By HARVEY VALENTINE The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Playing their first game without Dwyane Wade, the Bulls almost pulled off an improbable comeback against the Washington Wizards.

That’s small consolation for a struggling team fighting for a playoff spot.

Bradley Beal scored nine of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, John Wall dished out a career-high 20 assists to go with 14 points, and the Wizards held on to defeat the Bulls, 112-107, Friday night.

Jimmy Butler Minus Wade, whose fractured elbow will keep him out for the rest of the regular season, the Bulls were down 19 points at halftime before getting as close as one.

“I hate this word, ‘soft.’ I hate it, but that’s exactly what we were,” Bulls forward Jimmy Butler said of his team’s start. “They beat us to every 5050 ball, worked our tail in transition, we turned the ball over. Those things that we’ve talked about all year long replayed in that first half.”

The Bulls rallied and eventually had a chance to tie it, but a well-guard-

“Maybe I should’ve side-stepped a little bit. You can say all this stuff now, but I had a great look at it.”

Butler finished with 28 points, and Robin Lopez added a season-high 25 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulls, who began the night in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, and have lost seven of eight.

Wall, playing despite spraining his left foot in Wednesday’s loss to Dallas, sank four free throws in the final minute, including two with 1.8 seconds left.

Washington’s Jason Smith, starting in place of Markieff Morris who was a late scratch because of an illness, tied his season high with 17 points, and Ian Mahinmi had a season-high 16.

“It was solely attributed to John,” Smith said of his output. “He was distributing the ball to everybody.”

Washington, 21-4 in its past 25 games, had lost two straight, allowing 119 and 112 points.

“We got back to defending the right way, guarding our guy individually,” Beal said. “They made some tough shots and some big 3s here and there, but for the most part I thought we did a solid job.”

DeKALB – The Northern Illinois gymnastics team is looking to keep making history.

After a record-breaking outing to close the regular season, the Huskies are riding a wave of confidence heading into the Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday in Muncie, Indiana.

“I feel like we’re more confident this year as a team,” junior Ashley Potts said. “We’ve had a lot more success, and this year we have a chance to make regionals as a team. The whole team is

really focused this weekend, and we want to get it done.”

It was a bittersweet end to the regular season for the Huskies. In a meet at Central Michigan, they set the program record with a score of 196.15. However, Central Michigan edged them with a score of 196.575, and had NIU won, it would have been crowned the MAC regular-season champion.

“You can’t lose sight of the positives,” NIU coach Sam Morreale said.

“We had a lot of good things, we just came up a bit short. ... It’s hard to look at that day and say it’s a failure.”

The Huskies (10-7-1 overall, 4-2 MAC) finished second behind Eastern

Michigan, which went 5-1 in conference action, but lost at NIU earlier in the year.

“It’s bittersweet because we get the highest score we’ve ever gotten, we hit a 196, which is something we’ve never done, but we had so much at stake that I think it overshadowed the record-breaking day,” senior Courtney Dowdell said. “After we sat down and talked about how the meet went, it turned out to be a great meet.”

It was the first time the Huskies cracked 196 points in program history.

The previous high was 195.8 against Eastern Michigan in 2015.

Senior Jamyra Carter added some individual history in the meet, as well.

She tied the school record for best finish on the uneven parallel bars, scoring a 9.95.

“I’ve kind of followed them since the buzzer-beater against Michigan (on March 1),” senior guard Jordan Matthews said. “I didn’t realize they have, like, a huge celebrity fan base.

Now all the sudden everybody’s like, ‘Oh, yeah, I went to school there.’ ” With the Gonzaga-Northwestern matchup set, Melson and fellow junior Dustin Triano sat in their hotel room and realized neither of them knew where their opponent’s school is located. Fortunately, Triano had access to one of those Google machines.

“He was like, ‘I think it’s in Chicago,’ and I was like, ‘Really?’ ” Melson said. “I didn’t know anything about Northwestern, honestly.”

COULD’VE BEEN A BIG SHOT So much of the talk since Northwestern’s opening victory over Vanderbilt has been about the mistake committed by the Commodores’ Matthew Fisher-Davis, who purposely fouled Bryant McIntosh in the waning moments even though Fisher-Davis’ team was leading by a point.

No doubt, Vandy blew it. But the Wildcats did a lot of things right in the first tourney game in school history.

“Yeah, it does give us extra motivation that everyone wants to talk about the foul,” senior forward Sanjay Lumpkin said. “Everyone wants to talk about the foul, but they don’t want to talk about the plays we made down the stretch.”

The foul happened with 15 seconds to play. There was plenty of time for McIntosh – the player coach Chris Collins wanted to shoot the potential game-winner – or a teammate to make a heroic play.

“There’s no question in my mind that B-Mac would’ve went down and scored,” Lumpkin said.

Sophomore center Dererk Pardon said McIntosh would’ve hit a pull-up jumper.

“I would’ve [shot] a floater,” McIntosh corrected.

Either way, the Wildcats’ destiny would’ve been in their own hands.

It wasn’t so long ago that the average college basketball fan knew nothing of Gonzaga. Before 1999 – when the Zags went on a Cinderella run to the Elite Eight – some in the Chicago area might have distantly recalled the name of the school from 16 years earlier, when future NBA great John Stockton led a shocking upset of then-powerhouse DePaul.

Now the Zags are in their 19th straight NCAA tourney – the past 18 appearances under coach Mark Few – yet still they aren’t familiar to quite everyone. In Thursday’s first-round victory, a South Dakota State player asked guard Silas Melson what state the school is in.

Which begs the question: Just what did these Zags know about Big Dance greenhorn Northwestern before Thursday night?

“I knew they were in a good conference,” Karnowski said. “I’ve probably seen a couple of games.”

SALT LAKE CITY – Just how large is Gonzaga center Przemek Karnowski? Let’s put it this way: He’s large enough to offer a 7-foot, 300-pound man his hand-me-downs.

And large enough, it seems, to feel no need to at least pretend to care about Northwestern’s feel-good NCAA tournament story.

To the naked eye, Gonzaga’s game appears to be not losing. The West Region’s No. 1 seed has successfully executed that strategy in 33 of 34 outings this season. Remember that if Karnowski, a senior from Poland, rag-dolls Northwestern’s undersized front line in Saturday’s second-round matchup.

Also, remember this: The man-mountain might not be standing if it weren’t for a Northwestern graduate.

He missed all but five games of his sophomore season because of unbearable pain in his lower back. He couldn’t work out, could hardly bend over. But Dr. John Shuster of Spokane, Washington, home of the Zags, performed the surgery that saved Karnowski’s career.

Shuster texted Karnowski on Friday morning and asked which team he was supposed to root for.

“Easy answer,” Karnowski said.

“Your guy from Gonzaga.”

Arrieta sees long-term reward in his regimen

By GORDON WITTENMYER gwittenmyer@suntimes.com MESA, Ariz. – Forget agent Scott Boras’ comparisons to megabucks pitcher Max Scherzer when making the case for client Jake Arrieta’s value and bullish actuarial estimates of his career.

As far as Arrieta is concerned, nobody needs to look any farther than a few lockers away in the Cubs’ clubhouse for a good reason to bet on Arrieta for longevity at a high level the rest of the career – which, in turn, makes Boras’ case for a long-term deal like Scherzer’s.

“Look at (John) Lackey, man,” Arrieta said of his 38-year-old teammate.

“He says he’s going to retire at the end of this year, but watch him throw. He’s healthy. He’s got velocity. He knows how to pitch. He’s got great command.

If he wanted to, he could probably pitch another three years.

“Look at (the Dodgers’) Rich Hill, who just signed a three-year deal. He’s going to pitch until he’s 40. If I want to, I think I’ll still be able to.”

in between starts and the offseason, the way I train, the way I eat,” said Arrieta, who embraces yoga, crushes Pilates and loads up on “plants,” including kale. “It’s not only for baseball.

It’s for my family, my kids. I want to be healthy and active, to be able to do things with them until I’m not moving and in my recliner for good, when I’m 85 or whatever.

“It’s just part of my lifestyle and it plays a huge role in my profession, in this game. That’s something that won’t change. And I’m always looking for new stuff, any information that’s accurate that would benefit me or my teammates.”

Arrieta talked Friday after five efficient innings against a group of Triple-A players from the Angels’ organization. He has two starts left this spring before his first start in what’s expected to be his final season with the Cubs.

The Cubs haven’t shown the appetite for the kind of years Arrieta expects to command as a free agent, a position that hasn’t changed in the past two years.

“That’s OK,” he said. “It would be cool, for sure (to sign long term with

the Cubs). But the business is the business. They’re not dummies. There’s rhyme and reason for why they make the moves they do. They have to put what they feel is the team’s best interest and the organization’s best interest first. I would do the same thing.

“Something could come up. Something might not come up. Both are OK.” Note: Top prospect Eloy Jimenez was among seven players cut from big league camp – although not before making a strong impression on the manager during his first big league camp. “What he showed to me is a tremendous understanding of his swing as a 20-year-old,” Joe Maddon said. “He stays inside the ball as well as the most seasoned Edgar Martinez did. It’s kind of like that approach. Or Miguel Cabrera. I’m not saying he’s those guys yet.

I’m just saying that’s his approach.”

Jimenez was among three nonroster players assigned to minor league camp, joining infielder Chesny Young and outfielder Mark Zagunis. Four more were optioned to Triple-A Iowa: right-handers Pierce Johnson and Felix Pena, catcher Victor Caratini and outfielder Jacob Hannemann.

“I was upset with the lefties, two walks,’’ said Holland, who was Derek Holland charged with six runs on four hits and three walks. Other than that, Holland was OK with his outing, in which he allowed six runs on four hits and three walks. “This is spring, this is where we work on stuff. Once the games hit it’s a different animal,’’ he said.

Tech can help you get moving Dear Doctor: I’m having trouble keeping my New Year’s resolution to get more exercise, and one of my co-workers swears that an activity tracker or an exercise app will help me stay focused. What are they, exactly, and why would they work?

Dear Reader: First, let us reassure you that you’re not alone. By deciding to exercise more, you’ve committed to creating a new habit, and that’s always a challenge.

There’s the honeymoon phase, when you’re buoyed by elation and optimism, and when getting out every day for a walk or a run or a trip to the gym is a snap.

However, this is often followed by a period of struggle as reality sets in. No matter the scope of the goal, you’ve committed to a process that moves gradually, in increments, and requires consistent willpower. Suddenly, finding an excuse to skip that yoga class is all too easy.

But take heart. For those who don’t give up, who power through the disruption and uncertainty that a new activity can bring, there comes a magic moment. Suddenly, the new behavior has become second nature. It’s a habit, a part of your life.

For those who decide to make exercise a new habit, an activity tracker or an exercise app can make that difficult middle phase bearable. They help you set a goal, track your progress and keep a diary of your effort. A recent study found that 75 percent of the participants who used an exercise app said they were more active.

They also reported a drop in their BMI, or body mass index.

Depending on the product, you can track your heart rate, calories burned, distance you have run and the number of steps taken in a day. Some apps and devices help you with food choices and let you log your food intake. Dive deep into the technology, and you’ll find devices that

As to specifics, a fitness app is simply a program that you download onto your smartphone. You can use it to log information about your workouts and, depending on the app, receive data that tells you how well you’re doing in achieving your goals.

Some popular apps, such as MyFitnessPal, are free.

Fitness apps are highly personal. They help you stay aware of what you’re eating, how much you’re moving and whether you’re improving. Your long-term goal is to exercise more.

What an app can do is provide enough detail to set daily goals. It can make incremental progress interesting and even fun, which is both the heart and challenge of creating a new habit.

An activity tracker, like the popular Fitbit, is basically an exercise app that you wear. It uses sensors to detect your movement and, with an algorithm, translates the raw data into statistics about your progress. You then download the data onto your computer to use as you wish.

Whether you choose an app for your smartphone or the wearable tech of a fitness tracker, what you’re getting is a helpful blend of coach, trainer and cheerleader.

You should absolutely tell your parents everything you know so they can inform her parents. If your parents are hesitant to do that, confide in a trusted teacher or counselor at school so your friend can get the help she appears to desperately need. Dear Abby: I have a 23-year-old stepson who continues to bully my wife into taking care of him. South, with so much wasted in clubs, signed off in four hearts. (But if South had had, say, five low clubs, he would have headed for six or seven hearts.)

What should West lead? He knows that dummy is coming down with five or more diamonds, because with 4-4 in the reds, North would probably have responded one heart, not one diamond. Also, leading a side suit bid by an opponent is rarely best.

Since a trump or a club rates not to be effective, West should choose the spade two, guaranteeing at least one honor in the suit.

East should confidently put in the spade jack, cash the spade ace, lead a third spade and wait for a heart trick to defeat the contract.

COME HEAR THEM BOTH PERFORM APRIL 1ST! BEN KOHLI Ben Kohli moved to DeKalb in 2000, and completed his MFA degree in painting at Northern Illinois University in 2003. He currently lives in the heart of downtown DeKalb, and is the night manager for American Liquors.

Ben bought his first guitar when he was 16, which he still has today. Not long after this initial purchase, he began writing and recording his own original music. Being self-taught on the guitar, Ben describes himself as a “life-long beginner.”

His musical influences are broad, and include The Beatles, The Grateful Dead, Neil Young, and Eddie Vedder to name a few.
