Mom’s crush on J.J. Watt

The love for my husband is undeniable. For more than a decade he has been the light of my life. Hands down he is my best friend and lover.

I wouldn’t trade him for the world. But I might trade him in for one particular NFL player named Justin James “J.J.” Watt. I have a total mom crush on this hunk of a man.

Watt is 6-feet, 5-inches, and 289 pounds of pure stud. He is not only a great defensive lineman for the Houston Texans, but he also is a humanitarian.

I don’t know if it’s volunteerism or his stature that makes him so attractive.

Watt, 27, has made a difference in so many lives. The Justin J. Watt Foundation helps middle schools across the nation. This foundation provides extracurricular activities for students, especially in sports.

He understands that the playing field brings a sense of community, positive self-esteem and lifelong wellness. Since I am a health and physical education teacher, this just tugs at my heartstrings.

In an interview with ESPN, Watt explained that he wanted to understand from a fan’s perspective what it was like to watch the game from the most inexpensive seats in the stadium.

So he walked, with the camera man, up the flight of a gazillion stairs and told himself that he wanted to make each and every game worth the money – that he would give all of his fans a chance to be a part of the experience. Watt wanted his performance to be unforgettable each and every game. His motto is “Dream Big Work Hard.”

DeKALB – A Cortland woman faces charges of driving under the influence after a head-on collision early Sunday on Peace Road, according to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said Nichole R. Senatre, 32, of the first block of Prairie Street in Cortland, was traveling south on Peace Road north of Fairview Road around 1:40 a.m. when her 2016 Hyundai Accent drove onto the shoulder, crossed the center line

Another touching way he has given back is a story about a boy who was in a car accident.

Apparently the EMTs had to cut off the little boy’s No. 99 jersey to help save his life. When the boy recovered, he was devastated that his Texans jersey was unfixable.

So what does J.J. Watt do? He visits the boy in the hospital bearing gifts of new jerseys and other memorabilia. The NFL superstar took the time to lift the spirits of a boy after such a traumatic event.

Watt is more than just a star NFL athlete, he is a positive role model for kids, and adults as well. He is a man of humility and generosity.

This all makes him the total package for some lucky lady.

Like I said before, my husband is the love of my life, but J.J. Watt has a special place in my heart.

May his back injury be healed, and may he continue to lighten the lives of all fans and mothers not only in Texas but across America.

Senatre ran from the scene after the crash, police said. She later returned and was arrested on charges of DUI, driving with a revoked license, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and leaving the scene of a personal injury crash.

Bingaman was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, police said.

WHIRLWIND OF WORDS Sycamore student wins DeKalb County Spelling Bee

news@daily-chronicle.com MALTA – “Contiguous” was the word that earned Magnus Keswani, 12, of Sycamore an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in May. Magnus, a student at St. Mary’s School in Sycamore, won the annual Daily Chronicle/DeKalb County Regional Office of Education Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday morning at the Kishwaukee College Theatre in Malta. After getting off to an inauspicious start, Magnus said he was very surprised to make it to the final round and ultimately win the competition.

“I was shocked,” Magnus said. “I got the practice round wrong, so I just kept trying to do my best.”

Magnus emerged from a field of 19 competitors from 10 local schools. The event included eight rounds of spelling and vocabulary questions that the students were asked to spell and answer correctly to continue in the competition.

The Daily Chronicle will sponsor Magnus’ trip to compete in the national spelling bee from May 28 to June 3 in National Harbor, Maryland.

The runner-up spot in the competition went to Daniel Martin, 11, of Sycamore. Daniel said that although he did not win, he still enjoyed participating in the event.

“The best part was being able to qualify for this,” Daniel said. “I wasn’t sure if I was going to win, so I just tried to have fun up there.”

Daniel, who attends Sycamore Middle School, said he will continue to work hard, and he looks forward to next year’s event.

“I did really good this year,” Daniel said. “Next year, I’ll train harder and hopefully win.”

While some contestants studied at home, others, such as Josephine Wilson, 12, of Waterman, prepared for the competition in after-school clubs.

“We had spelling club after school,” Josephine said. “We did spelling quizzes and a lot of other stuff.”

Magnus said he was able to do most of his preparation at home with the help of his family.

“We each got a list [of spelling words],” Magnus said, “and we were just told to study at home.”

Magnus said that the most interesting part of the event for him was meeting new people and competing in a

“Just seeing all the contestants, and seeing that everyone had different skills – that was cool,” Magnus said.

Magnus said he is very excited about continuing to the next level of competition in Washington, D.C. “It’s kind of awesome because you get to spell more words and go to a really cool place,” he said.

Magnus’ mother, Photine Liakos, 50, of Sycamore, said it has been a wonderful experience for her to watch her son compete.

“It’s been amazing,” Liakos said. “He puts in effort, and he succeeds. We’re incredibly proud.”

Amanda Christensen, the regional superintendent of schools for the DeKalb County Regional Office of Edu-

cation, said that this annual event gives the office an opportunity to support the talent of local students.

“I think it’s a chance to showcase an academic talent in the same glory

as an athletic arena,” Christensen said.

“I hope [the contestants] get an appreciation for language, and I want them to get out of it that they can support each other in a place like this.”

DeKalb Marching Barbs leave for Ireland

DeKALB – Around 4 p.m. Sunday, three buses full of people departed the DeKalb High School parking lot. Traveling with them was one bus of luggage and another full of instruments.

The people on the buses included 102 members of the DHS Marching Barbs and 11 chaperones.

The buses headed to O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, where the group will travel to Ireland for an eightday trip. The group will be joined in Ireland by 37 parents and family members who will travel separately as part of a companion trip.

The DeKalb High School Marching Barbs have been invited to appear Friday in the 2017 St. Patrick’s Festival Parade in Dublin. The parade is part of Ireland’s four-day St. Patrick’s Festival.

The St. Patrick’s Festival Parade will start at 7 a.m. local time Friday.

The parade will feature bands and music ensembles from Ireland, the U.S., France, Germany, Switzerland and the Bahamas competing to win awards in several categories.

The parade route is more than a mile and a half long, and the band will march in front of the president of Ireland and the lord mayor of Dublin. More than half a million people view the parade live, and millions watch it on TV. The parade can be seen anywhere in the world through an online livestream, offered on the festival’s free app available to download at www.stpatricksfestival.ie/connect/app.

A viewing party will be held in the DeKalb High School auditorium the day of the parade. Doors will open at 6:30 a.m., the parade will begin at 7 a.m.

In addition to their performances, the group also will see famous Irish sites, including the Blarney Stone and Kilkenny Castle.

“It is an educational trip with cultural and musical education,” band director Steve Lundin said. “We will be doing some really exciting performances, nothing like what we do at home.

Some students have never experienced the world outside of DeKalb or Chicago. Some have never been on a plane or abroad before. I’m excited to see how much they can learn about the world.”

DeKalb City Council to hear new downtown redevelopment proposal

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – With the City Council greenlighting the Cornerstone redevelopment project during its last meeting, another area business owner is looking to introduce a downtown revitalization proposal during Monday’s council meeting.

Cohen Barnes, owner of Sundog IT, is looking to expand his company and wants to relocate to the former Moxie building at 230 E. Lincoln Highway, which has been vacant since 2015.

DeKalb Economic Development Planner Jason Michnick said the building needs quite a bit of work to bring it up to code, including a new roof, electrical plumbing and heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

“This is a growing theme in the downtown area, unfortunately,” Michnick said.

The rehabilitation is estimated to cost up to $1.2 million, and Barnes is requesting a $400,000 tax increment financing fund contribution from the city.

The second floor of the Moxie building will be occupied by Sundog, which

supports Microsoft Cloud technologies for numerous organizations and is located at 444 E. Hillcrest Drive in DeKalb, while the first floor will be commercial space.

Unlike the Cornerstone plan introduced by John Pappas of Pappas Development, this project will not require rezoning and could be voted upon by the council during the upcoming meeting.

By having a tech firm located downtown, the goal is to increase the likelihood of other similar businesses co-locating or clustering in the downtown area.

“Cornerstone is a redevelopment project, and since it’s increasing the footprint of what was there previously by going up to a four-story building, there’s going to be quite a bit more property taxes, and it will trigger a reassessment of what those may be,” Michnick said.

“However, a lot of work on this building is maintenance, and it doesn’t have as much of a return, but it makes it enticing to businesses in towns.”

The proposal will be heard during the council’s regular meeting at 6 p.m. at the DeKalb Municipal Building, 200 S. Fourth St.

St. Charles police confirm that man shot his daughters, wife

bschory@shawmedia.com ST. CHARLES – Randall Coffland told a 911 dispatcher Friday that he shot his daughters to death, that he shot his wife, and he was going to shoot himself.

“I just shot and killed my children,” Randall Coffland is heard saying on a 911 recording. “And I shot my wife. And I’m going to shoot myself. … I’m going to kill myself now, too.”

At a news conference Sunday, St. Charles Deputy Chief David Kintz released the 911 tapes in addition to chilling details about the deaths of 16-year-old twins Brittany S. Coffland and Tiffany S. Coffland at the hands of their father.

Even as Randall Coffland was telling the 911 dispatcher what he had done, his wife, Anjum Coffland, 46, can be heard screaming to another emergency dispatcher that her husband had killed her girls and shot her in the legs.

“Oh my god, my husband shot my kids!” Anjum Coffland said to the 911 operator. “My daughters are dead! … I’m going into shock. I’ve lost a lot of blood. …

He’s finally lost it.”

Randall Coffland, 48, and his daughters all were found with single gunshot wounds to their heads in a condominium at 450 S. First St., St. Charles, where he lived with the girls, Kintz said.

His wife was taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition Sunday, Kintz said.

The girls would have celebrated their 17th birthdays Tuesday, Kintz said.

Randall Coffland and the twins were living at the South First Street address, while Anjum Coffland was living separately from her husband in another condominium on South Fifth Avenue in St. Charles. Kintz said he did not know how long they had been living apart.

Two 9 mm handguns were recovered in the condominium but Kintz said police have not yet confirmed that they were owned by Randall Coffland, or which weapon – or whether both – were used in the shootings.

One gun was in the vicinity of Randall Coffland; the other was found in a closet, Kintz said. Evidence technicians found a single bullet casing in the vicinity of each victim, he said. A single bullet injured both of Anjum Coffland’s legs, he said.

“The weapons are still part of our investigation … to determine where the weapons came from. He did have a valid FOID card,” Kintz said, referring to the Firearm Owners Identification card that gun owners are required to have.

“We have no indication of a struggle, other than the violence of the crime with gunshots,” Kintz said. “As far as I know, there was nothing strewn about to show there was a fight. The coroner will have to take a look at that on Monday.”

One daughter was found on a couch and the other in a bedroom, he said.

Police spoke to the mother at the hospital, but Kintz said he did not know the content of those conversations.

Kintz also could not say why Anjum Coffland was at her husband’s residence

that day.

“We have to figure out what brought her back to the apartment,” Kintz said.

Police do not know what, if anything, triggered the chain of events, and investigators plan to talk to friends and others who knew the family, Kintz said.

“We don’t have anything at this point,” Kintz said. “That is part of the follow-up – we have to talk to people and determine what led to this. … This was a tragic and horrific event. Three lives were lost, and another was injured. First responders have also had to deal with the aftermath of this event, and our entire community mourns the loss of the victims.”

Kintz said that although the shootings still are under investigation by both his department and the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, the official causes of death will be determined by the coroner.

Investigators also are in consultation with the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, Kintz said. Randall Coffland did not have any previous history of domestic violence, Kintz said.

Police were called to the Fifth Avenue address about a month ago for domestic trouble, but there were no charges, Kintz said.

DeKalb County winter weather advisory in effect into Monday

In its winter weather advisory updated Sunday, the National Weather Service has slightly increased its prediction for snow accumulation overnight and into Monday evening.

Estimations of between 3 inches and 6 inches of snow initially were predicted, and the National Weather Service now estimates from 4 inches to 7 inches in the advisory that includes DeKalb, McHenry, Kane, Boone, Winnebago, Ogle, Lee, Kendall, LaSalle and Grundy counties.

The forecast means both the morning and evening commutes Monday could be affected by snowfall.

The advisory was issued for between 10 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday.

A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snow primarily will cause travel difficulties.

Travelers are advised to be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibility, as well as to use caution while driving, the National Weather Service said.

DeKALB – The Living Room program offering space and assistance to people dealing with overwhelming life circumstances has moved to a new office.

The Living Room is now located at 12 Health Services Drive in the KishHealth System Ben Gordon Center, part of Northwestern Medicine, with hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The office includes KishHealth System’s Behavioral Health Services.

Kim Volk, director of Behavioral Health Services, said the Living Room moved from its previous location at 631 S. First St. to be more accessible, as the central office sees more foot traffic and is closer to Kishwaukee Hospital. Volk said several people visited the Living Room on March 6, the first day it was open at the new office. She said the program is looking to expand its hours and make the community more aware of its services.

The Living Room is a nonclinical space intended as an alternative to hospital emergency rooms for people experiencing overwhelming symptoms because of life circumstances.

The goal of the program is to provide a safe and calm environment for guests to resolve crises without more intensive intervention. Services include support

State considers sales taxes on more services

U of Illinois faculty petitions against hate speech

URBANA – Several University of Illinois academic units have pressed administrators to take a stance against words and actions they said threaten students amid tense debates on what constitutes free speech.

Chancellor Robert Jones sent out a mass email two weeks ago responding to concerns that include Chief-related “Unofficial St. Patrick’s Day” T-shirts, harassment of Muslim students, anti-immigrant messages on the quad and the defacing of an Israeli flag at a protest.

Jones asked the campus to combat hateful speech with “speech that builds connections and shared understanding,” the News-Gazette reported.

But faculty from African-American Studies, American-Indian Studies, Asian-American Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, and Latino Studies challenged Jones with a petition last week on “Racism and ‘Free Speech.’ ” The petition said Jones’ email was “insufficient at best.”

“The refusal on the part of the University of Illinois to denounce even the content of the messages or the threats themselves only emboldens students to continue these and related acts of intimidation, safe in the knowledge that the university will do little to protect students from harm,” the petition read.

“Furthermore, the administration’s approach has made some students more vulnerable than others.”

Jones acknowledged at a campus Senate hearing that his email didn’t properly communicate the university’s “core values,” but took offense to the petition’s suggestion that the school’s approach represented a tolerance for “xenophobia, racism, as well as white supremacy, as forms of free speech.”

Immigration officials shift where deportees are held

CHICAGO – Immigration officials in the Chicago area have shifted where they detain immigrants being deported to Mexico.

Instead of transferring them to a processing center in suburban Broadview, they are sent about 70 miles from Chicago to the Kankakee County Detention Center.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman said the shift began March 3 to make better use of agency resources and a “smoother process” for visiting families.

There are roughly 130 detainees in Kankakee currently. Chicago’s WBEZ first reported the change.

Immigration attorneys and advocates criticize the move for a lack of transparency.

They also argue that family members wanting to visit relatives before they’re deported have to travel farther.

ICE officials said they’re committed to ensuring the legal rights and the physical and mental well-being of those detained.

“Our economy used to be things we made,” she said. “Now, it’s things we do.”

Building a broader tax base

Hutchinson’s proposal would tax the use of storage space, including parking garages and boat docks; repairs and maintenance of personal property such as cars; landscaping services such as sprinkler installation and snow removal; dry-cleaning; cable TV, satellite and digital streaming services; pest control; use of a private detective or installation of a home security system; and personal care, ranging from tanning to tattooing but not including hairstyling. Some states tax other major services such as internet access and gym memberships.

Illinois would not.

Taxing these services was originally projected to bring in $360 million per year, but an adjusted estimate now places that number at $291 million – a smaller piece of the $6 billion puzzle Hutchinson’s revenue bill must complete to help balance the budget.

Tom Johnson, president emeritus of the Taxpayers’ Federation of Illinois, said taxing services is a commonsense place to start because it targets purchases made most often by those with more disposable income.

“Adding services to a sales tax base will always make the tax less regressive,” Johnson said.

Weekend shootings in Chicago leave 3 dead

CHICAGO – Shootings in Chicago this weekend left three people dead – including a man who was shot on the city’s far North Side when he climbed off a party bus.

Police said two other men were also shot when someone opened fire from an SUV at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Twenty-eight-year-old Quentin Payton of Chicago was pronounced dead a short time later. The wounded men were taken to area hospitals and information about their conditions wasn’t immediately released.

Police said that two other men were killed Saturday in separate shootings on the South Side.

Thirty-four-year-old Jarrod Johnson was killed early Saturday and on Saturday night the body of a man was found inside a vehicle. His name hasn’t been released.

No arrests have been made in any of the shootings.

In budget, Trump set to push conservative views

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump sends Congress a proposed budget this week that will sharply test Republicans’ ability to keep long-standing promises to bolster the military, making politically painful cuts to a lengthy list of popular domestic programs.

The Republican president will ask his adopted political party, which runs Capitol Hill, to cut domestic agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development, along with grants to state and local governments and community development projects.

The spending plan, set for release Thursday, would make the Pentagon the big winner with a $54 billion boost to defense spending.

Trump has promised to “do a lot more with less,” but his blueprint faces a reality test with Republicans, many of whom are already protesting.

Republicans have groused about some of the preliminary plans, including elimination of the $3 billion community development block grant program that’s popular among local GOP officials, a 25 percent cut to the EPA and elimination of 3,000 jobs, and essentially scuttling a $300 million per-year program to clean up the Great Lakes.

Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, is joining with Democrats to push back on that last proposed reduction. Cuts to the Coast Guard are meeting Republican resistance. Trump’s plan to eliminate community development block grants was dismissed on Capitol Hill by those who remember how a modest cut to the program sank a spending bill not long ago.

“Unfortunately, we have no alternative but

to reinvest in our military and make ourselves a military power once again,” White House economic adviser Gary Cohn said on “Fox News Sunday.”

The U.S., however, already spends more than half trillion dollars on defense, more than the next seven countries combined.

Cohn defended the spending cuts elsewhere as necessary to balance the budget. “These are tough decisions, but the president has shown he is ready, willing and able to make these tough decisions,” he said Sunday.

Democrats are unlikely to support the cuts, and Republican defections raise the possibility of a congressional train wreck and a potential government shutdown when the 2018 budget year begins Oct. 1.

Preliminary reports on the budget show some domestic Cabinet agencies, such as the departments of Homeland Security and Veterans Affairs, would see increases, including $3 billion for Trump’s promised wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. Trump said repeatedly during the campaign that Mexico would pay for that project, but Mexico has said no.

Those intended spending increases, however, would mean deeper cuts elsewhere.

People familiar with the budget who spoke on the condition of anonymity in advance of the public release said the White House is seeking a 30 percent cut from an Energy Department office that promotes energy efficiency and renewable energy.

The office has funded research on projects such as LED light bulbs, electric trucks, advanced batteries and biofuels.

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is targeted for at least $700 million in cuts from its current $2.1 billion budget, said Scott Sklar, chairman of the steering committee of the Sustainable Energy Coalition.

McCain: Provide wiretap evidence or retract claim

WASHINGTON – The House intelligence committee is asking the Trump administration for evidence that the phones at Trump Tower were tapped during the campaign as its namesake has charged, a request reinforced Sunday by an influential Republican senator who says the president must either come up with the evidence or retract his claim.

“I think the president has one of two choices: either retract or to provide the information that the American people deserve, because, if his predecessor violated the law, President Obama violated the law, we have got a serious issue here, to say the least,” Sen. John McCain said.

President Donald Trump asserted in a tweet last week: “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory.

Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!”

He continued the allegation against former President Barack Obama in other tweets but offered no evidence.

The request for evidence by Monday was made in a letter sent to the Justice Department by the House committee chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., and the panel’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., a senior congressional aide said Saturday. The aide

Obama’s director of national intelligence, James Clapper, said that nothing matching Trump’s claims had taken place, but that has not quelled specu-

lation that the Obama administration monitored Trump’s communications.

Early this past week, Schiff said the committee would answer the president’s call to investigate the claim. He also

said he would ask FBI Director James Comey directly when he appears later this month before the full committee, which is investigating Russian activities during the election.

On Sunday, Schiff said he doubted there was any evidence of wiretapping, but that Comey and others called to testify at the upcoming hearing “would be in a position to have to know.”

“I think on March 20 if not before we’ll be able to put this to rest,” Schiff told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “This Week.” “I don’t think anyone has any question about this, George. The only question is why the president would make up such a thing.”

McCain said Trump could “clear this up in a minute” if he were to call “the director of the CIA, director of national intelligence and say, ‘OK, what happened?’ ” The president has an obligation to provide evidence that Obama broke the law or retract his claim, the Arizona Republican said.

“I do believe on issues such as this, accusing a former president of the United States of something which is not only illegal, but just unheard of, that requires corroboration. I’ll let the American people be the judge, but this is serious stuff,” McCain said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

WASHINGTON – Two days before Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered dozens of the country’s top federal prosecutors to clean out their desks, he gave those political appointees a pep talk during a conference call.

The seemingly abrupt about-face Friday left the affected U.S. attorneys scrambling to brief the people left behind and say goodbye to colleagues.

It also could have an impact on morale for the career prosecutors who now must pick up the slack, according to some close to the process. The quick exits aren’t expected to have a major impact on ongoing prosecutions, but they gave U.S. attorneys little time to prepare deputies who will take over until successors are named.

“It’s very, very gut-level reaction,” said Steven Schleicher, a former prosecutor who left Minnesota U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger’s office in January and was still in contact with people there.

The request for resignations from the 46 prosecutors who were holdovers from the Obama administration wasn’t shocking. It’s fairly customary for the 93 U.S. attorneys to leave their posts once a new president is in office,

and many had already left or were making plans for their departures.

Sessions himself was asked to resign as a U.S. attorney in a similar purge by Attorney General Janet Reno in 1993.

But the abrupt nature of the dismissals – done with little explanation and not always with the customary thanks for years of service – stunned and angered some of those left behind in offices around the country.

Former prosecutors, friends and colleagues immediately started reaching out to each other on a growing email chain to express condolences and support, commiserating about how unfair they felt the situation was.

One U.S. attorney was out of state on Friday and was forced to say goodbye to his office by a blast email, said Tim Purdon, a former U.S. attorney from North Dakota who was included on the email chain.

Some of those ousted were longtime prosecutors who had spent their careers coming up through the ranks of the Justice Department. John W. Vaudreuil, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, became an assistant U.S. attorney in that office in 1980. Another, Richard S. Hartunian of the Northern District of New York, joined the Justice Department in the 1990s.

Is it the Nike Air Max shoes?

The story begins with a pair of Nike Air Max 95 shoes with neon-green soles. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev was photographed wearing them; emails stolen from his iPhone by dissident Russian hackers show they, along with several other articles of clothing Medvedev has been seen in, were ordered online and delivered to an address linked to a web of companies and charities controlled by close confidants and relatives. After months spent probing the network, the Anti-Corruption Foundation, headed by opposition activist Alexei Navalny, has released a video and documentation it says show that Medvedev has accumulated more than $1 billion worth of property, including vast estates in Russia and Tuscany and two yachts.

Medvedev’s spokesperson shrugged off the story, as did the Kremlin. But as of Thursday, Navalny’s biting, often humorous and slickly produced video (in Russian with English subtitles) had been viewed 7.4 million times on YouTube and attracted 40,000 comments. It’s a testimony not only to the staggering corruption of the regime of Vladimir Putin, but also to the power of the Internet and social media to expose it and inform Russians about it.

Navalny guides viewers through a dazzling tour of Medvedev’s purported properties, recorded by drones that flew over the high walls surrounding the estates. A sprawling chalet in Sochi, site of the 2014 Winter Olympics, contains distinctive lampposts that appear in the background of Medvedev’s own Instagram photos. One of his yachts was photographed at the dock of his huge estate outside Moscow. In the Kursk region, home of Medvedev’s ancestors, another vast estate includes vineyards, as does a property in Tuscany.

Navalny’s conclusion is stark: “Medvedev can steal so much and so openly because Putin does the same, only on a grander scale; because everyone in government does the same, because the judges and the prosecutors and the special services are also doing the same. ... The system is so rotten that there is nothing healthy left.”

The opposition leader, who shook up the Kremlin by leading street protests in 2011 and 2012 and capturing a reported 27 percent of the vote in Moscow’s 2013 mayoral election, appeals to Russians to do their part by sharing the video with friends and by signing petitions in support of his candidacy for president in 2018. It is doubtful that Navalny will be allowed to run in that election, presumably against Putin; that was the point of the recent criminal case against him. But the exposure of Medvedev who has portrayed himself as a corruption-fighting technocrat - and the impressive online response to it offer hope that Putin’s regime can be weakened by the revelation of its crimes.

country as takers who didn’t pay their fair share.

Romney’s assertion included, by the way, not only the poor but also many of those white working-class voters who gave President Donald Trump his electoral margin of victory.

Those Trump supporters are in for a bitter awakening: They will also suffer in the new order, as some will learn when they lose their newly acquired health insurance.

Of course, very few lawmakers are impolitic enough to publicly voice their contempt for the less affluent.

But every now and then, one of them is caught saying what he thinks (as Romney was when he was secretly recorded).

Just the other day, U.S. Rep Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, chairman of the House Oversight Committee, shared his condescension in an interview with CNN: “Americans have choices, and they’ve got to make a choice. So rather than getting that new iPhone that they just love

and want to go spend hundreds of dollars on that, maybe they should invest in their own health care.”

Well, there’s a problem with Chaffetz’s comparison. First, most poor people don’t own iPhones.

But if they did, the fancy cellphone would be a lot cheaper than health insurance.

According to Health Pocket, a website that helps consumers navigate the health insurance marketplace, the cheapest insurance plan available to a 30-year-old costs about $311 a month, or $3,732 a year.

(Under Obamacare, government subsidies brought that cost down substantially.) The iPhone 7 can be purchased for less than $700.

Still, Chaffetz’s disturbing response panders to the racial resentment that has long been the animating force behind widespread opposition to Obamacare.

Many GOP voters believe incorrectly that people of color benefit more than whites from the ACA. Indeed, several researchers have studied the relationship between racial bias – much of it implicit or subconscious – and opposition to Obama’s policies, especially Obamacare.

One study found that white voters who said they didn’t like the ACA were supportive of exactly the

As I am new to interacting with my elected officials, I wondered if this was typical.

So I called Sen. Richard Durbin’s and Sen. Tammy Duckworth’s offices and asked the same questions.

Durbin’s office took the time to search for the senator’s most recent statements, and both offices asked my position so they could pass it on to the senators. The staffers were forthcoming and actively seeking my thoughts, giving me the impression that my call mattered.

For me, this isn’t about Democrats vs. Republicans. It is about an Illinois resident wanting to have access to my representatives’ positions before there is a vote. It is about my desire to make sure he knows and cares where I stand on the issues.

In such a divisive time, I believe we need politicians who are willing to be collaborative to get something done instead of engaging in partisan bickering.

It seems that Rep. Kinzinger is one of the few Republicans who doesn’t just spout the party line every time he speaks.

So I want to support him. I want to encourage him to not just represent

same plan when it was associated with Bill Clinton.

The fact is that more white Americans have gained insurance through the ACA than black Americans.

White Americans, moreover, constitute the largest single ethnic group who benefit from Medicaid.

Nationwide, 41 percent of those who receive Medicaid are white, while 22 percent are black and 25 percent are Hispanic, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. (The remaining recipients are “other,” Kaiser says.)

Trump managed to persuade a lot of those white Americans that he would give them better and cheaper health insurance.

“Everybody’s got to be covered,” he told “60 Minutes” in 2015. “I am going to take care of everybody. I don’t care if it costs me votes or not.

Everybody’s going to be taken care of much better than they’re taken care of now.”

That’s not going to happen.

Trump was too smart to ridicule the have-nots while he was on the campaign trail, but his policies are still going to give them the shaft.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Hoping for openness from Rep. Kinzinger

To the Editor: Before this last recess, I called Rep. Adam Kinzinger’s office regarding his public schedule.

I was unable to get any information about where he would be.

I didn’t want to heckle him, as some politicians fear. I just wanted to hear him speak so I could have a better understanding of his positions.

I just called his office about the new health care bill, as I was not able to find his current position on this issue.

The nice staffer just repeated over and over that she had not spoken with him “personally” on the issue so

the Republican position in his actions and votes but represent what the district wants.

But it is hard to support someone I don’t have access to.

It is hard to be engaged when I can’t find out about his current positions.

It is my hope that Kinzinger will be open about his schedule, available to meet with constituents when he is back in the area and share his positions on social media in real time so that we all can be more engaged and aware of the work he is doing on our behalf.

For all their claims to morality, family values and Christianity, members of the Republican Congress show a troubling hostility to the poor. Despite their professed piety – House Speaker Paul Ryan wears his Catholicism like a neon badge – they seem ignorant of the precepts of the New Testament.

Just look at the GOP’s approach to the Affordable Care Act. The bill that is making its way through the House would, among other things, pare back Medicaid, which provides health insurance for those in poverty. The ACA encourages the expansion of Medicaid, and, as a result, millions of poor people now have health insurance for the first time in their lives.

But Republicans are aghast at the concept of caring for those in need; they view compassion as weakness and generosity as wasteful.

While the GOP has been the party of the haves for generations, its recent incarnations have added a walloping dose of contempt for the have-nots.

The sainted Ronald Reagan spread the notion that poor people had less because they were lazy and that helping them just made them worse off.

The ultra-rich Mitt Romney, for his part, characterized half the

Many ’16 4th-place Barbs back

ecarifio@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The defenders on the DeKalb softball team are going to find themselves in a position no Barb has been in for nearly four years.

They likely are going to be fielding many more balls.

With ace Morgan Newport graduated and pitching at Northwestern, the Barbs are expecting more balls in play this year – and coach Jeff Davis said his improved defense is ready for it.

Davis said the defense is particularly strong in the outfield, where a trio of three-year starters roam – Erin Karasewski, Peyton Montgomery and JC Longeville.

“They are very seasoned and so knowledgeable of the game,” Davis said. “That will help us a bunch, and they all have great speed. We’ve got a newcomer, Riley Levine, at third base. She’s a freshman. ... She’s a pretty solid defender, and she’s going to swing a pretty mean bat for us, too.”

The Barbs lost only two senior starters off last year’s Class 4A fourth-place team. One was an allstate player in Newport, and the other was slap-hitting leadoff hitter and shortstop Jenna Levine. Senior Torrie Newport and sophomore Mallory Warner will split the pitching duties, with freshman Ashley Nelson seeing some action in doubleheaders as well.

Davis said the team will keep rotating the pitchers until one steps up, or will go with multiple pitchers all year.

Davis said he expects more balls to be put into play this year by opposing teams.

The chance to make more plays is exciting, Karasewski said.

“I love the idea of getting more chances to make a play and support my pitcher,” Karasewski said. “She’s out there working her butt off, and I like being able to help her out, help the team out.”

Warner, who also plays second base, said she’s been pitching more with her travel team and is ready for the challenge of heading to the circle.

“I think our defense will be strong, definitely our offense,” Warner said.

“I think our pitching will be good with me and Torrie, and another freshman (Nelson) if needed.”

Karasewski said the team is motivated to at least duplicate the success of last year.

“I think it makes it easier to pick up from last year, but at the same time it makes us work harder,” Karasewski said. “While we did lose impact

players, it just pushes us that much more to make up for the impact they did make and come back better than ever.”

Davis said this year’s team on the whole is deeper than last year’s, but she added that a lot goes into making a run to the state tournament in terms of getting hot at the right time and staying healthy – both of which worked for the Barbs last year.

“Everybody’s going to want to say, ‘Oh you’ll get back there, you’ll get back there,’ ” Davis said. “And we’re so proud we did what we did, but I hope as a group we understand we still have a lot of work to do. We want first, second or third. We do want to improve. The lowdown: The Royals go from 11 players on last year’s team to 16. Coach Harrod said she’s not sure what her lineups are going to look like yet, but she’s sure the pitching and catching crew of Tomi Harrod, Moyer, Ryan and Kyofler will have a big role – Tomi Harrod and Moyer are utility players, and the coach expects at least three of that crew to be playing at any time. Coach Harrod said that having four players who can pitch is a first for the program.

The hope of ending an NCAA tournament drought likely will have to wait another year for the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team.

The No. 4 seed Huskies struggled from the outside and allowed a critical run by Toledo in the fourth quarter, and the No. 6 seed Rockets came away with an 82-71 victory Saturday in the Mid-American Conference Championship at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

The Huskies, who last made the NCAA tournament in 1995, took a fourpoint lead early in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Courtney Woods.

However, Toledo (25-8) answered with a 14-0 run to take control of the game.

“Obviously, right now, when you get done playing in the championship game and you end up on the losing end, it’s a tough situation to be in,” NIU coach Lisa Carlsen said. “They’re obviously not happy, and sad to see it end and allow the opportunity to get away. ... There’s hopefully an opportunity for us to continue to play basketball, and we’ll talk a little more about it when the sting wears off.”

In the semifinals, the Huskies cruised to an 83-55 win over Western Michigan to send them to the first MAC title game in school history.

“The overall body of work that these kids have been able to do, there’s been a lot of firsts,” Carlsen said. “There are firsts all over, both collectively and individually. The good thing about a run like this, especially for your underclassmen, they have a taste. They know what it’s like. They’ve been there, done that.”

WASHINGTON – The Michigan basketball team crammed a lifetime worth of memories into one magical week, and they received a treasured souvenir as a keepsake.

After defeating No. 24 Wisconsin, 71-56, Sunday to win their first Big Ten tournament championship, the eighth-seeded Wolverines held high the hardware that accompanied the feat.

The Wolverines began their journey with a scary skid off the airport runway in Michigan. They ended it by overwhelming the second-seeded Badgers, who had won three straight – including the regular-season finale against Minnesota – by a total of 55 points.

Between the aborted flight and their final unexpected victory, Michigan beat Illinois, eliminated top-seed Purdue and sent home No. 4

seed Minnesota.

And so, the first Big Ten tournament in the nation’s capital ended with a surprise champion cutting down the nets at Verizon Center. Michigan won the title in 1998 but had it vacated because of NCAA sanctions.

Tournament MVP Derrick Walton Jr. scored 22 points, D.J. Wilson added 17 and Zak Irvin had 15 for Michigan, which had lost 17 of its previous 20 games against Wisconsin.

As a reward, Michigan will be the No. 7 seed in the Midwest and open the NCAA Tournament against Oklahoma State.

“We overcame a lot,” Walton said. “Had a lot of trials and tribulations. All I can say is God is good. We’re here for a reason.”

Bronson Koenig scored 15 points, and Nigel Hayes and Ethan Happ had 14 apiece for the Badgers (25-9), who scored only 24 points after halftime.

But when CBS host Greg Gumbel announced NU had made it, all the tension was released. The noise made it hard for people to hear Gumbel reveal the Wildcats’ foe in their first March Madness game.

It was a moment almost eight decades in the making, and NU wasn’t shy about celebrating. ‘‘It was just awe-inspiring to finally see our name be put up there [and] Gumbel to say, ‘In purple, the Northwestern Wildcats,’” Law said. ‘‘To be honest, after he said ‘Northwestern,’ I don’t really think I heard anything else he said. I think we were all jumping around and going crazy. It was just surreal.”

Several teams were disappointed when the bracket was announced.

Illinois State won 27 games, finished 17-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference and lost to Wichita State in the tournament title game. The Redbirds were left out when the teams were called.

NU learned its fate during a raucous watch party with its fans at under-construction Welsh-Ryan Arena. It was a party that sometimes looked inevitable and sometimes looked doubtful during a season that covered a spectrum of emotions.

The Wildcats and their fans even had to wait until the final regional was unveiled, adding a few more minutes to the wait. ‘‘It seemed really hot in that building for those 45 minutes,” coach Chris Collins said. ‘‘It was excruciating,” forward Vic Law said.

There are changes that need to be made in the rotation of players by coach Fred Hoiberg.

Neither will happen. The front office already made sure of both.

So the fact that Dwyane Wade had to stand there in front of the media after another humiliating 100-80 loss to Boston on Sunday, tiptoeing through the obvious dumpster fire created by two men in general manager Gar Forman and VP of basketball operations John Paxson, and try to make this mess a positive?

No thanks, as Wade wasn’t even in the mood to fake it any longer.

“I wish upper management could be answering these questions,” Wade said, when the rotation topic came up again. “Because I’m tired of answering the same ones every game. I wish I had

the answers. But I don’t. I don’t want to say too much. I don’t want to say the wrong thing. I want to get out there and try to play and try to lead. Find a way for me and Jimmy [Butler] be better to help these guys.’’

The fifth straight loss for the Bulls dropped them to 31-35 on the season, as an Eastern Conference playoff spot continued to slip away.

From the outside, it looked like the fingers should point directly at Wade and Butler on Sunday, as the two combined to go 6 for 22 from the field.

However, they also are working with players who are inexperienced or too new to the system to even be out there, as Gar/Pax are hell bent on this idea of making the playoffs while developing young talent.

“We gotta get back to doing the basics before we can try and do anything else,” Butler said.

Getting outscored, 22-9, in the first quarter and missing their first 12 attempts to start the game? Yes, fundamentals seem to have gotten lost.

CHICAGO – It remains to be seen whether the Blackhawks can climb over the Minnesota Wild in the Central Division. But they very well might have climbed back into the Wild’s heads.

A month ago, the Wild had a ninepoint lead in the division and an eightgame regular-season winning streak over the Hawks.

Now, after Sunday’s 4-2 victory at the United Center, the Hawks are nipping at their heels, one point back (Minnesota has a game in hand). But more importantly, the Hawks – who knocked Minnesota out of the playoffs for three straight years from 2013-15 – have beaten the Wild three straight times.

If they meet in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, as expected, the Hawks will have all the momentum in the series.

“Against a good team like that, you’ve got to be on your toes,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “We’ve learned the importance of every shift, doing the right things. And momentum’s always important as you go along, especially when you get to the playoffs. Whether you measure momentum or performance, at least we wiped that slate a lot cleaner than it was when we had a real problem trying to beat that team.”

Facing an onslaught of shots and grade-A scoring chances, Corey Crawford made a season-high 42 saves in the victory.

The Wild were all over the Hawks for most of the game, so this one was a straight-up goalie win.

“It’s disappointing,” Wild coach Bruce Boudreau said. “They were there to be had today.”

The win also put a quick end to the Hawks’ modest two-game losing streak.

“That was a big game for us,” Crawford said. “After two losses, coming back against one of the best teams in the league. Some big points for us there. … It’s like a four-point game.

For us, that’s a big win and it’s good for

our momentum and our confidence.”

The Hawks scored on their first two shots of the game, prompting Boudreau to make the rather stunning decision to yank star goaltender Devan Dubnyk from the game after just 4:38.

Dubnyk appeared to shoot Boudreau a harsh glare, but Boudreau said he could tell Dubnyk wasn’t seeing the puck well.

Patrick Kane said it was “a little surprising,” especially given how little of a chance Dubnyk had on either of the two goals.

Artemi Panarin set up Kane’s 30th goal 51 seconds into the game, and Kane returned the favor, teeing up a Panarin one-timer, less than four minutes later.

The goalie switch did serve to wake up the Wild for the morning start, as they controlled play for most of the rest of the way.

Eric Staal nudged in a Marco Scandella rebound at 10:30 to make it 2-1.

But an egregious brain cramp by Ryan White – he completely gave up on the play to complain to a referee after being whistled for a delayed penalty for tripping Jordin Tootoo – led immediately to a Trevor van Riemsdyk goal, which made it 3-1. White was briefly benched for the mental error, and the Wild responded with a huge pushback.

But Crawford was terrific, stopping all 20 shots he saw in the second period.

Minnesota kept coming in the third, and Mikael Granlund took the puck off Nick Schmaltz’s stick and scored just 46 seconds in to cut the Hawks’ lead to 3-2.

After a few more great chances for the Wild, the Hawks put the game away when Hossa beat Kuemper on a breakaway sprung by Duncan Keith.

“We knew we needed to have this one,” Kane said. “I think if you look at our game [and] you ask anyone in this room, we probably feel we could play a lot better. Give the credit to [Crawford] tonight, he played an unbelievable game. We want to play better against those guys. Nonetheless, we’ll take the points.”

bmiles@dailyherald.com In his new book, “The Cubs Way,” author Tom Verducci recounts a conversation between Cubs president Theo Epstein and Oakland Athletics general manager Billy Beane in 2014.

At the time, the Cubs were shopping pitcher Jeff Samardzija and looking for young talent in return.

“I’m not sure you guys have enough, unless you want to talk Addison about Addison Russell,” Russell Verducci recounts Epstein saying to Beane.

“We would consider that,” Beane said to Epstein.

Verducci then writes: “The hair on Epstein’s arms nearly stood on end.”

It’s easy now to see why.

At the tender age of 23, Russell already is one of the top shortstops in the game.

He made his first All-Star Game appearance last year, starting for the National League.

Yes, the Cubs got themselves a keeper when they obtained Russell in the final stages of their rebuilding process.

Equally impressive has been Russell’s realistic assessment of his own

game. Asked early in spring training where he’d like to improve, he addressed both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.

“Backhands this year,” he said of his fielding. “And then also just cutting down on strikeouts. We need to bring those walks up a little bit. I think 50 walks are nice, but you go back and look and see if those strikeouts were on those 3-2 counts. You could have that base, but you were too aggressive in that situation. If I cut those out, I think that will be progressing.”

There is room for growth for Russell at the plate. Last season, he compiled a line of .238/.321/.417 with 21 home runs and 95 RBIs. He did manage to increase his walk rate, from 8 percent in 2015 to 9.2 percent last year. The strikeout rate dropped from 28.5 percent to 22.6.

Showing increased power potential, Russell’s home-run-to-flyball ratio went from 9.8 to 14.2 percent.

The postseason was a roller coaster for Russell, who went 1 for 15 in the division series before going 6 for 22 with two homers in the NLCS and

6 for 27 with the grand slam and nine RBIs in the World Series.

With experience, there’s good reason to believe Russell can smooth out the peaks and valleys.

“His game itself, we talked about every component, what needs to be improved,” manager Joe Maddon said. “But he did it so well and in such a mature manner. Really, the sky is the limit. This guy is scratching the surface. He is that good. Know thyself, I think that’s what’s happening with a lot of our young guys.

“They’re understanding themselves better. As they do, their games are going to continue to improve.

With Addy, he could be an annual All-Star, there’s no question, and beyond. He’s such a gifted athlete. He’s just so quick. And he cares so much.

And he’s turned out to be such a good self-evaluator. All of those are components to creating a superstar in whether it’s baseball or football or basketball.”

Niacin can lower cholesterol Dear Doctor: I’ve been taking niacin for years to lower my cholesterol. Do you think it really helps?

Dear Reader: First, let’s look at niacin and its role in the body. Niacin is a B vitamin needed to create compounds crucial to cellular function. A shortage of niacin, or vitamin B3, can lead to diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash and, when severe, neurologic conditions that manifest as confusion and dementia. Fortunately, because of our varied and plentiful diet, not to mention food supplementation, niacin deficiency is rare in this country.

Some research does support niacin’s ability to improve cholesterol levels. In 1955, in one of the earliest studies of niacin, researchers found that doses of 1,000 to 3,000 milligrams significantly lowered total cholesterol levels in men. Niacin has also been found to lower levels of LDL, the so-called “bad” cholesterol, while raising levels of HDL, the so-called “good” cholesterol.

Niacin has an impact in other ways as well. A 2007 study of 30 patients who took 1,000 milligrams daily showed a reduction in the thickness of their carotid arteries’ interior lining and lower levels of CRP (C-reactive protein, a marker of inflammation) when compared to a placebo. Further, a 2009 study of a niacin-plus-statin regimen showed that it led to a reduction in a marker for atherosclerosis in the heart.

Such research suggests that niacin could decrease the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The science, however, is less than conclusive.

A 1986 study followed 1,189 men who had a history of heart attack and compared those who took niacin at 3,000 milligrams per day to those who got a placebo. After five years, the niacin group reported fewer heart attacks, but no difference in the death

rate. After 15 years, however, the niacin group reported an 11 percent decrease in mortality rates, mostly from a decrease in heart disease.

Studies of niacin in addition to a statin have not shown benefit against either death rates or heart attacks. A 2011 study in the New England Journal of Medicine assessed the impact of 1,500 milligrams of niacin in addition to the drug simvastatin in those with cardiovascular disease. After three years, the authors found no impact on mortality. A 2014 study in the New England Journal of Medicine echoed these findings, with no benefit after 3.9 years of statin-plus-niacin treatment.

It may be that niacin, when taken with a statin, provides no additional bang for the buck. The significant decrease in heart attacks and strokes seen with statin therapy may overwhelm any potential benefit of niacin. Further, as the 1986 study showed, the benefit of niacin may take up to 15 years to show benefit; the trials of statin-plus-niacin were only for three to four years.

Overall, niacin does seem to have beneficial effects on cholesterol and on reducing atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. However, it’s not as powerful as a statin in decreasing rates of heart attacks, and the benefit might not become evident for years.

If you cannot tolerate a statin, niacin may be a good option. But discuss it with your doctor.

Dear Abby: My DEAR ABBY son “Jake” was born last June.

Jeanne His father was Phillips a good friend who I thought I loved and that he loved me. The day I told him I was pregnant, he disappeared. Our baby boy just passed away from SIDS. I’m struggling with Jake’s loss and planning his funeral while taking care of my 5-year-old son. Jake’s father had his mother call and threaten me. She said, “His name better not be listed anywhere in the obituary!” I’m at a loss about how to deal with both of them. I did not list the father’s name anywhere, but it was my choice. After the funeral I’m not sure if I want to see either one of them ever again. Any advice? – Grieving in Colorado Dear Grieving: I am so sorry for the loss of your baby boy. Yes, I do have a word of advice.

Even in the midst of your grief, you are thinking clearly. Why you would ever want contact with either of those despicable individuals again is beyond me. Feel free to write them off and go on with your life.

I’ve been looking for another job (for other reasons). I feel ashamed, and I don’t want to be the “other woman.” I don’t know whether to wait for him or just walk out. – Lost in Arizona Dear Lost: Chip knows you are ambivalent, which is why he wants to keep talking to you. If you meant what you wrote, that you do not want to be the other woman, then end the affair once and for all and – as you put it – just walk out.

Dear Abby: I have worked in various retail places for many years. I am surprised at how some parents allow their children to run amok in stores and fail to teach them how to behave in public places. When this happens, and there’s a danger of them running into tables and customers (I have seen it happen), should the employees say something to the children? Or should they notify the manager about the disruptive children, and let the manager talk to the parents or the children? Should it be announced over the intercom that children need to stay with their parents? What’s the best way to handle this common problem? A place of business is not a playground. Dignified paying customers who are there to support the business are offended by the lack of discipline some children are allowed to display. – Paying Customer Dear Paying Customer: If you take it upon yourself to “correct” the inattentive parent, the person is sure to become defensive. A better way to handle it would be to point it out to the manager of the establishment and let him or her deal with it, because if someone were to be hurt on the premises, there could be legal implications.
