Don’t throw your vote away this time POLL YESTERDAY’S RESULTS A couple of candidates for office have told us recently that they no longer want to be elected. So they’ve written us letters or posted on Facebook that they’ve withdrawn from the race.

Scott Campbell sent a Letter to the Editor in which he stated the reasons he would bow out: He thought there were other people running he would vote for ahead of himself.

That’s a very candid and respectable reason.

Michael “Max” Maxwell, formerly a candidate for 6th Ward alderman in DeKalb, sent an email to reporter Drew Zimmerman telling him he planned to leave the race, saying work obligations prevented him from dedicating enough time to do the job right.

Fair enough.

The deadline to have your name removed from the ballot passed weeks ago, and people have been voting since February. So although Campbell and Maxwell both have told us they’re out of the running, their names still will be on DeKalb voters’ ballots now through April 4.

Those who want to drop their election bids at this point have to submit some written statement to their local election authority saying as much, DeKalb County Clerk Doug Johnson said.

“If they file paperwork with their election authority, wherever they filed their (nominating) petitions, withdrawing, then we won’t count the votes they do get,” Johnson

said. “If they don’t file the paperwork, we will count the votes they get and they’re still a viable candidate and could win the election.”

Johnson told me this week that his office had not yet received any written notice from any candidates stating that they no longer want anyone’s vote.

More than 200 people have voted so far at the DeKalb County Legislative Center in the Gathertorium, 200 N. Main St., Sycamore.

Johnson said he’s hoping for double-digit voter turnout this year and seems confident that we’ll beat the 8 percent turnout we saw for the 2015 municipal elections.

I sure hope more of us vote than did that year. But when you do vote, try to avoid voting for anyone who said they don’t want to be elected.

Even someone who votes for third-party candidates would consider that throwing your vote away.

REINER FATHER AND SON TO LEAVE FOOTPRINTS AT CHINESE THEATER

LOS ANGELES – Carl Reiner and Rob Reiner are set to make history at the TCL Chinese Theatre, becoming the first father and son to jointly leave their footprints in concrete outside the Hollywood landmark.

Organizers of the eighth annual TCM Classic Film Festival announced Thursday that it’ll recognize the two entertainers with a hand-and-footprint ceremony on April 7. Both Reiners have had long careers as writers, directors and actors.

The 94-year-old Carl Reiner has collaborated with such legends as Mel Brooks, Sid Caesar, George Burns and Steve Martin, creating hit film and TV comedies since the 1960s.

Student diversity addressed during District 428 candidates forum

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The diverse student population of DeKalb School District 428 was a common theme of questions submitted to the nine candidates actively campaigning for a school board seat during a DeKalb Chamber of Commerce open forum Thursday.

The format of the event, which was held at the Egyptian Theatre, allowed one randomly selected question from an audience member to be directed at each candidate. The nine hopefuls also had an opportunity to respond to three additional questions not directed at them.

In a question directed at Twangie Smith, candidates were asked how to close the achievement gap, which recognizes a disparity in test scores for minority students.

Smith said the board needs to look at the data that has been collected on student performance and act upon it.

“I can make sure that the board stays focused on that achievement gap and that it’s not something that’s just pushed under the table,” Smith said.

Four other candidates also addressed this question.

Jeff Hallgren said this problem cannot be addressed by teachers alone.

“We should be reaching out aggressively to parents to get them involved in trying to develop a program or work on the programs that already exist to rectify this problem,” he said.

Former board President Tracy Williams said a significant amount of research has been done on student achievement gaps, which should give the board all the information it needs to solve the problem.

“We have everything at our fingertips,” Williams said. “It simply has to be made a priority to make sure it’s carried through.”

Valerie Pena Hernandez said teachers in DeKalb, particularly at Jefferson Elementary School, are collaborating with other teachers so that their instruction can meet the needs of all students.

Shatoya Black said the board should identify where students stand based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, a motivational theory that uses five levels of individual need to determine what is necessary for some-

one to achieve happiness and success.

Sean Johnson was asked how he would use the results of the diversity needs assessment, a plan approved by the board in October to gain input from the community on how to respect the racial and ethnic diversity of students.

Johnson said respecting diversity should start within the district, and the results should be oriented to make the schools’ strengths greater and weaknesses improve.

Board President Victoria Newport was asked her position on supporting LGBTQ students.

Newport said students should take advantage of the dozens of clubs and programs offered within DeKalb schools to find people with similar interests.

“Each club is important to students and some of them are the reasons kids come to school,” Newport said.

Catherine Harned praised a leadership workshop her grandson was involved in sponsored by Clinton Rosette Middle School where he learned about bullying and LGBTQ rights.

“For a little kid like that to be understanding those issues was a sharp thing for the district to be doing,” Harned said.

While Jeromy Olson did not field a question aimed at student diversity, he said that in hiring new administrative staff members after the announced resignation agreement with district Superintendent Doug Moeller and the nonrenewal of DeKalb High School Principal Michele Albano’s contract, he said that it’s not only critical to find the right person, but to establish the right metrics that would allow them to succeed.

Midwest Museum of Natural History welcomes new executive director

SYCAMORE – After rising through the ranks from a volunteer to executive director of the Midwest Museum of Natural History, Cindy Khatri is ready to step down from her role to devote her time to her next big project – becoming a parent.

“I was a volunteer, then an intern, then I became the educator and then I became the director,” she said. “I’ve done everything here, and I’ve seen it all, so it will be interesting to watch it from the outside now.”

The museum’s board of directors and community members recognized Khatri for her contribution to the museum and welcomed incoming Executive Director Malwina Bardoni during an open house Thursday.

Khatri has been with the museum since 2011 and been executive director for the past three years.

Khatri said she is expecting her first child in April and wanted to do what was best for her family and to make sure someone would be there to dedicate the proper amount of attention to the museum.

“I love this museum, and I know the community does too,” she said. “It’s been a great experience.”

The Midwest Museum of Natural History, 425 W. State St. in Sycamore, is a nonprofit museum featuring collections of mounted animals from around the world and two or three temporary exhibits each year.

It also has live animals such as snakes, turtles, lizards, fish and tarantulas.

Bardoni has a master’s in anthropology and a graduate certificate in museum studies from Northern Illinois University.

Bardoni said she was drawn to the museum because of its “wonderful collection” and because her interests are in natural history.

She said her goals are to continue the museum’s outreach programs, tell the stories of the exhibits and bring in new visitors.

Museum board President Steve Squire said the director of a small museum such as the Midwest Museum of Natural History has to “know a little about a lot of different things.”

“You have to be able to work with the staff and volunteers, to be able to develop and create exhibits with the help of our exhibit person,” Squire said. “You have to know something about museum finance, interacting with our guests and our sponsors, be adaptable and be able to work well within a variety of different areas.”

Board member Jeff Petersen said he was impressed with Bardoni early on for her professionalism, educational background and experience with museums.

“There are people who are just looking for jobs; we are looking for someone with a passion for museums, and we clearly saw that in Malwina,” Petersen said.

Sycamore OKs water treatment fee for radium

SYCAMORE – Sycamore residents will see a radium treatment fee of $5 or more on their water bills starting in May. The Sycamore City Council unanimously approved an ordinance Monday for a radium treatment fee to be added and highlighted on the city’s utility bill.

The fee increase is based on the size of the user’s water meter. Most residential users and some small businesses have water meters of five-eighths

The radium fee was proposed during previous City Council meetings as a way to meet the increasing costs of radium treatment and alter the fee structure to support future capital improvements.

The city is nearing the end of a 10-year contract for radium removal, and the cost is set to more than double in August from $310,000 to $647,200 annually.

The process also removes barium from the water, which has led to more frequent media exchanges and contributed to the higher treatment cost.

Ex-employee faces arson charges in fire

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – A day after a local pizza restaurant closed its doors for good, police said a former employee broke in and started a fire inside.

Eric Carlton, 21, of the 800 block of West Lincoln Highway, is charged with burglary and arson in connection with the Feb. 24 incident at Toppers Pizza, 1015 E. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb.

Surveillance video shows Carlton break- Eric Carlton ing into the store about 3 a.m., DeKalb police Cmdr. Bob Redel said. A fellow employee identified Carlton from the footage. Carlton appeared to be intoxicated at the time, Redel said.

A couple of hours after the breakin, about 5 a.m., a fire was reported

inside the restaurant. The fire started near the pizza oven, fire officials said.

Firefighters from DeKalb, Sycamore, Cortland, Malta, Genoa-Kingston, Maple Park and Shabbona responded to the blaze, which was extinguished in about 30 minutes and caused about $10,000 in damage.

Redel said the incident occurred a day after the Wisconsin-based pizza chain, known for unusual toppings and late-night hours, closed the doors for good at all five of its Illinois locations.

In addition to starting the fire, Carlton also stole food and two two-liter bottles of soda, Redel said.

An arrest warrant was issued March 2 for Carlton, and he was arrested Monday. He has since posted $1,000 bail and been released, court records show.

Both burglary and arson carry potential prison sentences of three to seven years.

Man charged in fatal crash wants license back

SYCAMORE – A St. Charles man charged with aggravated driving under the influence and reckless homicide in connection with a January crash that killed a DeKalb High School student has asked a judge to reinstate his driving privileges.

John A. Yanni III, 25, of the 100 block of South 18th Street, could face up to 14 years in prison if convicted of the most serious charge, aggravated DUI causing John A. death. He was a firefighter/paramedic with Yanni III the Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District at the time of the crash.

Johnathan R. Ode, 18, of DeKalb was killed in the Jan. 17 crash on Route 38 east of Peace Road in DeKalb County.

Police said the pickup truck Yanni was driving crossed the center line and sideswiped one oncoming vehicle before colliding head-on with Ode’s vehicle.

Evan Cortez, 23, of Elgin was traveling in the passenger seat with Ode during the crash and is suing Yanni, claiming to have suffered permanent injuries.

Cortez was taken to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford

with serious injuries after the crash and underwent multiple surgeries.

Yanni was released from jail Jan. 19 after posting $1,000 bail. Judge Philip Montgomery also ordered him not to drink alcohol and required that he be fitted with an alcohol-monitoring bracelet.

Yanni’s lawyer, Liam Dixon, filed a petition on Yanni’s behalf Feb. 21 asking the court to rescind the suspension of his driving privileges, according to court records.

Yanni’s court filing also said the arresting officer did not have reasonable grounds to believe he had been driving under the influence of alcohol and that the officer did not have an arrest warrant.

He also alleges that physical and testimonial evidence was seized from Yanni as a result of his “unlawful arrest,” and that Yanni was “not properly advised of his rights to submit to chemical testing.”

According to police reports, Yanni’s eyes were bloodshot and glassy, and he smelled of alcohol after the crash. Yanni told police he was returning home from Schmidt’s bar in Elburn where he had two beers, according to police reports.

Dixon also filed a motion Feb. 24 for the preservation and production of evidence from police on the night of the crash.

Yanni is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. Friday.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – A Chicago man who used a $25 million settlement of his wrongful murder conviction lawsuit for purchases of guns, expensive cars and to rebuild his street gang is heading back to prison after a judge sentenced him to more than nine years on federal weapons charges.

The Chicago Tribune reported that at a hearing Thursday, U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber sentenced Thaddeus Jimenez after watching a video – shot on an iPhone by his co-defendant from the front seat of

Jimenez’s Mercedes – of Jimenez calmly shooting a former gang member in his legs. Both Jimenez and Jose Roman, who was sentenced to just more Thaddeus than 7 years in prison, Jimenez had previously pleaded guilty to the weapons charges. Both still face charges in Cook County related to the 2015 shooting.

Jimenez was 13 years old when he was charged as an adult in the 1993 gang-related shooting death of a

19-year-old man. He was convicted and sentenced to 45 years in prison, but in 2007, after two witnesses said that Jimenez had not fired the fatal shots as they previously claimed, prosecutors reopened the investigation and indicted another man. Jimenez was released from prison; the other man was later acquitted.

Jimenez sued the city and the police department and in 2012, a federal jury awarded him $25 million, one of largest police misconduct awards in city history.

Police superintendent wants stricter gun sentencing

SPRINGFIELD – An Illinois Senate proposal to increase prison sentences for repeat gun offenders would help curb the city’s rampant gun violence, Chicago’s top law enforcement officer said Thursday.

Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson appeared before the Senate’s Criminal Law Committee to support the measure, which would direct courts to lengthen penalties for repeat gun offenders within the existing sentencing limits of current law. Judges still could hand out lighter sentences to those charged with possessing weapons illegally, but they’d be required to publicly explain mitigating factors behind their decisions.

“What we’re trying to do is create a mentality, a culture of accountability,” Johnson said.

The committee endorsed the measure with a 6-5 vote, sending it to the Senate floor.

Chicago recorded 767 homicides last year. Johnson said the vast majority of victims were young black men killed by guns.

Johnson believes the plan will not only do more to keep violent offenders off the streets, but also discourage potential criminals from picking up guns illegally in the first place. He told lawmakers “the people that pull the triggers” are following the issue closely.

Chicago gets worst pension rating of 15 largest cities

CHICAGO – A Wall Street rating agency said Chicago isn’t alone in grappling with underfunded city employee pensions, but that it’s in the worst shape among the nation’s 15 largest cities.

The mayor’s office had no immediate reaction to Standard & Poor’s survey of pension obligations, in which Chicago performed the worst across the board, The Chicago Sun-Times reported.

The city registered the highest annual debt, pension post-employment benefits costs as a percentage of governmental expenditures, and the highest debt and pension liability per capita.

The burden in Chicago is more than $12,400 a person, double New York City’s more than $6,100 a person.

Chicago also had the lowest weighted pension fund ratio, the worst pension contribution versus required level, and the lowest funded return for a single fund. That last distinction went to the Chicago Police Annuity and Benefit Fund, which had assets to cover just 25 percent of its liabilities in fiscal 2015, down from 26 percent the year prior.

Chicago also had the lowest bond rating among the cities, at BBB-plus with a stable outlook. All of the other cities had a bond rating of AA-minus or better.

The report said funded ratios reported in fiscal 2016 are likely to look worse for most cities, given weak market returns last year.

SPRINGFIELD – The first woman to be promoted to brigadier general in the Illinois National Guard is retiring.

Lawyer plans to depose ex-House speaker Hastert

CHICAGO – A lawyer for a sexual abuse victim of Dennis Hastert said she’ll depose the former U.S. House speaker after he’s released from federal custody.

Kristi Browne represents a former Yorkville High School athlete who is suing Hastert for breach of contract in the hush-money pact that led to the Illinois Republican’s downfall.

Browne said Wednesday no settlement has been discussed.

Her client, now a married father, argues he kept his end of the bargain to keep quiet about Hastert’s misconduct when he was the wrestling coach at the suburban Chicago high school in the 1970s. Hastert paid him $1.7 million. The man said he’s owed $3.5 million.

The 75-year-old Hastert is due for parole in August. He’s serving a 15-month sentence for illegally structuring bank withdrawals to avoid reporting requirements.

GOP claims momentum as health bill advances

WASHINGTON – Republican leaders drove their long-promised legislation to dismantle Barack Obama’s health care law over its first big hurdles in the House on Thursday, claiming fresh momentum despite cries of protest from right, left and center.

After grueling all-night sessions, the Energy and Commerce and Ways and Means committees both approved their portions of the bill along party-line votes.

The legislation, strongly supported by President Donald Trump, would eliminate the unpopular tax penalties for the uninsured under the Affordable Care Act, replacing Obama’s law with a conservative blueprint likely to cover far fewer people but – Republicans hope – increase choice.

The vote in Ways and Means came before dawn, while the Energy and Commerce meeting lasted past 27 hours as exhausted lawmakers groped for coffee refills, clean shirts and showers.

Angry Democrats protested that Republicans were acting in the dead of night to rip insurance coverage from poor Americans. But Republican leaders sounded increasingly confident that, after seven years of empty promises about undoing Obama’s law, they might finally be able to overcome their own deep divisions and deliver a bill to Trump to sign.

“This is the closest we will ever get to repealing and replacing Obamacare,” Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin said at a press briefing where he arrived in shirt-sleeves to deliver a wonky power-point presentation on the GOP bill, part TED Talk and part “Schoolhouse Rock.”

“The time is here. The time is now. This is the moment.

And this is the closest this will ever happen,” Ryan said.

Leaders are aiming for passage by the full House in the next couple of weeks, and from there the legislation would go to the Senate and, they hope, on to Trump’s desk. The president has promised to sign it, declaring over Twitter on Thursday, “We are talking to many groups and it will end in a beautiful picture!”

Yet at the same time the president is leaving himself a political out, privately telling conservative leaders that if the whole effort fails, Democrats will ultimately shoulder the blame for the problems that remain. That’s according to a participant in the meeting Wednesday who spoke only on the condition of anonymity to relay the private discussion.

Democrats reject that notion, and the entire GOP effort.

“What we have seen is the Republicans’ long-feared and job-killing health bill that means less coverage and more cost to American people,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California said. “I don’t think the president really knows what he’s talking about.”

kill Obama’s requirement that everyone buy insurance by repealing the tax fines imposed on those who don’t.

The bill would replace income-based subsidies Obama provided with tax credits based more on age, and insurers would charge higher premiums for customers who drop coverage for more than two months.

The extra billions Washington has sent states to expand the federal-state Medicaid program would phase out, and spending on the entire program would be capped at per-patient limits. Around $600 billion in tax boosts that Obama’s statute imposed on wealthy Americans and others to finance his overhaul would be repealed. Insurers could charge older customers five times more than younger ones instead of the current 3-1 limit but would still be required to include children up to age 26 in family policies, and they would be barred from imposing annual or lifetime benefit caps.

Democrats said the Republicans would yank health coverage from many of the 20 million people who gained it under Obama’s statute, and drive up costs for others.

WikiLeaks’ big favor The first thing to say about the archive of cyberhacking tools stolen from the CIA and released by WikiLeaks is that they are not instruments of mass surveillance, but means for spying on individual phones, computers and televisions.

There is no evidence they have been used against Americans or otherwise improperly. If there were, we can be sure that WikiLeaks, whose core mission is not transparency but undermining U.S. national security, would have trumpeted it. It follows that the targets of the hacking methods, and the prime beneficiaries of their release, will be Islamic State terrorists, North Korean bombmakers, Iranian, Chinese and Russian spies, and other U.S. adversaries.

WikiLeaks claims it obtained the 8,761 documents and files it released from a former U.S. government employee or contractor. But given the organization’s close ties with Russia’s intelligence services, a link established by the U.S. intelligence community’s investigation into the hacking of the Democratic National Committee, it won’t be a surprise if Moscow again turns out to be the source of the leak.

In addition to losing valuable surveillance tools, the CIA now will be subjected – as the leakers intended – to disruptive controversy and unreasonable demands for greater “cooperation” with technology companies. Adherents to the theory that a “deep state” is attempting to undermine the Trump administration will seize on the revelation that the CIA arsenal included the tools and languages of other countries – proof, it will be said, that the DNC hack was a CIA “false flag” operation after all.

Civil libertarians are insisting U.S. government hackers inform phone- and computer-makers of vulnerabilities, rather than using them for their own vital work. But defending the integrity of devices is the job of the companies, not the CIA. As The Post’s Ellen Nakashima reported, U.S. agencies already submit all software vulnerabilities they discover to a governmental review that determines whether they should be disclosed.

The CIA will doubtless recover from this leak and find new tools; some experts say much of what was disclosed was relatively unsophisticated malware.

But the agency, as does the rest of the intelligence community, still faces the critical challenge of how to operate effectively in cyberspace while safeguarding its own secrets and methods. Procedures for vetting employees and contractors and providing them access to highly classified information must be studied again, and servers hardened against external penetration. One thing the agency must not do, however, is stop trying to develop a qualitative technological edge over U.S. adversaries, including the means to surveil them.

Brakes put on funds for high-speed rail

The federal government is putting a hold on funding that would aid the California high-speed rail project, but the state apparently didn’t get the memo.

The Trump administration has suspended, pending the completion of its proposed budget, a decision on a $647 million grant intended to electrify Caltrain commuter rail tracks, which would ultimately be used by the high-speed rail system.

As noted about two weeks ago, all 14 congressional Republicans sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, asserting: “We think providing additional funding at this time to the Authority would be an irresponsible use of taxpayer dollars.”

The letter cited a confidential Federal Railroad Administration report that concluded that the initial 119-mile segment of the system in the Central Valley could cost 50 percent ($3.6 billion) more than estimated.

But the state has nonetheless doubled down on the project. Last week, the Finance Department approved the California High-

Speed Rail Authority’s request to ask the State Treasurer’s Office to issue $2.6 billion of the nearly $10 billion in funds authorized by the 2008 bond measure narrowly approved by voters.

The state also appears nonplussed by the fact that its major ongoing revenue source for the project, the proceeds from the state’s “cap-and-trade” auctions, seems to be drying up. Just a small fraction of the pollution credits up for sale have been sold in the last year, threatening the hundreds of millions of dollars the bullet train expects to receive annually.

The Legislative Analyst’s Office noted in 2012, when the capand-trade program first got up and running, that the use of such proceeds was “very speculative,” and cautioned that using them to fund the high-speed rail system might be illegal, since they were supposed to be used to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions but the high-speed rail system will actually increase net greenhouse gas emissions for at least several decades because of construction

and operation effects.

The cap-and-trade program itself is facing great uncertainty.

A lawsuit challenges that the program’s “fees” are an unconstitutional tax, and the Legislature has yet to extend the program past its current sunset date of 2020.

From the very beginning, the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s business plans have been based more on hope and fantasy than on sound finance or economics. Proponents seem to have adopted the “in for a penny, in for a pound” strategy: Just grab as much money as you can, as quickly as you can, and start building.

But there is a saying in economics: “Sunk costs are sunk.”

That money is gone, and sometimes it is best to just cut your losses, rather than continuing to rack them up. Or, as actor and humorist Will Rogers once said, “If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging.”

The same holds true if you’re laying tracks for California’s high-speed rail project.

For women, what exactly comes less?

International Women’s Day is a once-a-year acknowledgment of what women do every day of the year, which is to keep the world afloat with our labor – paid and unpaid.

March 8 fell on a Wednesday this year. Here in the U.S., some of the organizers of January’s Women’s March encouraged women to wear red and take to the streets again. In addition to protesting, we were to avoid shopping – except at female-owned businesses – and boycott our jobs to show the impact of “A Day Without a Woman.”

An admirable cause, no question, but it’s one that brings out the crankiness in me, I confess. One of the challenges of showing support for women in America is how to do this without excluding most of the women in America who need it most.

Many women who take care of patients, for example, couldn’t take the day off without potentially harming those they’ve committed their lives to helping. My friend Amy Johnson responded to my post about this on Facebook, and she said it better than I ever could: “I am a nurse in an OB/ GYN office completely run by women.

Women who take care of children, such as teachers and day care workers, very likely added an additional burden to the lives of other women who had to scramble to find alternative child care, often at extra cost, if they chose to boycott work. Some of these school communities reportedly organized volunteers for alternative child care, but I understand why some

parents would balk.

For 10 years, I was a single mother with a job and no family nearby. Safe, reliable child care was a constant source of stress and worry, but I would never have entrusted the care of my child to strangers. Now a seasoned grandmother, I know that for all of my outdated ways, I am still in sync with most of today’s parents on that one.

Now let’s consider hourly wage earners, who are the backbone and the beating heart of labor in this country. They cannot take off work without fear of losing their jobs. After years of interviewing such women and writing about their lives, I thought I understood the full burden of their work. It only took 10 minutes today in a national chain store to discover a new depth to my cluelessness.

I approached three different female employees to talk about Wednesday’s protest, and each balked at the sight of my notebook. One of them told me, “I know you think you’re helping, but if corporate finds out I talked to you without permission, I’m fired.”

Think about that. They couldn’t even describe what it means to be

a woman right now without fear of reprisal from their bosses. Never have I felt more privileged for getting paid to say whatever’s on my mind.

Also, let’s keep this in mind: A high percentage of hourly wage labor is performed by women who are not white. Optics matter here. When public protests are populated by mostly white women who have control over their schedules and their lives, even the most honorable of causes can come off as a lucky hobby.

I have been thrilled by the throngs of women marching in the streets of America for the women of America.

Makes me feel the weight of my years, in a good way.

But if there’s one thing age hasn’t cured in me, it’s my impatience.

Let’s figure out what comes next.

To the Editor: I am honored to write this letter on behalf of Mayor John Rey. I have worked and lived in DeKalb for over 15 years and had the pleasure of meeting Rey in 2012 after graduating from the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Academy and at other community events.

I also worked directly with Rey during his mayoral run in 2013.

John has worked and volunteered in this community for over 53 years and I have observed his dedication as he seeks to continue the improvements and growth in DeKalb. John is always professional in his thinking and decision-making, and acts in the best interest of our residents. He has the ability, vision, wisdom and courage to lead our city into the future.

He is an outstanding public servant and a person of the highest integrity.

John is very willing to work with others and is not afraid to reach out to leaders

in the community. John’s leadership has sustained the community’s connection between local government and local business, which has positively affected the growth of the city in a positive manner. Rey’s history has proven to be a great asset for the city and my hope is that we will continue our momentum with his great leadership.

I urge our fellow residents to exercise their right to vote April 4.

Hospital fitness center will hurt neighboring YMCA

To the Editor: Listen closely Tuesday and you might hear a quiet “squish” as the Northwestern Medical-KishHealth System 600-pound gorilla steps on the hapless Kishwaukee Family YMCA next door.

Tuesday is when the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board will rubber-stamp the plans for the gargan-

tuan $46 million, 111,000-square-foot Health and Fitness Center right next door to the YMCA on Bethany Road between DeKalb and Sycamore.

You won’t hear a whimper from the YMCA board or its executive director, who by the way makes 10 percent of what KishHealth CEO Kevin Poorten does. You see, money talks and when your ultrarich neighbor says “Don’t worry, we will take care of you,” you fall in line and say “Thank you, kind sir.”

But it will not be only the members of the YMCA who will lose, but the young Y staff and many less fortunate residents of DeKalb County. An outside consultant has already told the YMCA it could lose 5 percent of its current membership (at least) when the new NWM-KishHealth complex opens in two years.

That is $290,000 chopped from its budget and it will only get worse as more members migrate over to the brand new, shiny fitness megaplex next door from the crowded, less ostentatious facility just across the spacious

new KishHealth-NWM parking lot (their lot has spaces for 350 cars).

I don’t feel as sorry about that as I do the greater damage that will occur when the YMCA is forced to severely curtail or eliminate its charitable work now supported by grants and member dues.

All those programs for low-income residents, including many minority families and children, who are helped immensely by the Y’s good work – such as providing a free summer lunch program for young people below the poverty level, free swim lessons and other subsidized efforts like Camp Power for the residents of University Village.

You won’t hear a peep from them either as they are the silent population, not wise in the ways of power and privilege as are those making the decisions that negatively affect them the most.

Please say a prayer for them next Tuesday.

Dan Holmes first picked up a guitar at age 10. Even though his dad was a minister, he wasn’t very interested in religious music. Instead, he learned by listening to performers such as James Taylor, Paul Simon and Jim Croce. While at Millikin University, he was able to solo at many of the same clubs as Dan Fogelberg, but it wasn’t until he attended Chicago Theological Seminary that he learned that he had a gift for writing and performing Christian music.

After moving to the East Coast, he had some success, including opening for Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger. However, when his dad was diagnosed with cancer, he moved back to Illinois and pursued a career in education.

For many years he was part of the duo Bruce and Dan, and has released recordings as part of that group as well as his own CDs, including “A Brand New Day,” inspired by a 2014 tour in England. Performances also have included the Illinois State Fair and writing music for the Appalachia Service Project.

Now that he is retired from teaching, Holmes is once again devoting himself to music full time. Come and hear him at Sycamore United Methodist at 5 p.m.

Keagon Larsen, a member of Troop 16, chartered at Federated Church in Sycamore, was recently awarded the Eagle Rank, the highest award achievable in Boy Scouts. He is the son of Kelli and Jeff Larsen of Sycamore.

Larsen joined the Scouting program in first grade with Cub Scouts Pack 141. During that time, he earned all five Cub Scout ranks and the Arrow of Light in 2010. In fifth grade, he crossed over into Troop 16 and continued his trail to Eagle.

He served as troop quartermaster, assistant senior patrol leader and senior patrol leader as he worked

through each rank.

He enjoyed all the activities, campouts and service projects in the troop and attended both Tesomas Scout Camp and Tomahawk Scout Reservation.

He also experienced high adventure trips to the 2013 National Jamboree at the Summit Betchel Reserve in West Virginia, and on the Current River trip in Missouri in 2014 and 2015.

He earned 31 merit badges during his Scouting career with Shotgun and Small Boat Sailing being his favorite.

Larsen chose to work with Sycamore High School for his Eagle Scout project. He refurbished an antique drinking fountain from the old high

DeKalb church donates to Meals on Wheels program Members of First Congregational United Church of Christ in DeKalb recently donated $2,500 to the Voluntary Action Center’s Meals on Wheels program.

The money was raised through a cookie sale hosted by the church Dec. 10. There were more than 7,000 individual cookies, candy and snack items made by 55 bakers. Members thank those who bought items at the sale and those baked them. They plan to host another sale to help support a valuable service program in the community.

Women’s club offers scholarship The Genoa Community Women’s Club is accepting college scholarship applications from 2017 graduates of Genoa-Kingston High School.

Completed applications, which are available on the GKHS website, must be submitted to the guidance office

by April 3. This year’s recipients will be notified at the annual Senior Awards Night on May 10.

Three winners will be selected based on their volunteer involvement in the Genoa and Kingston communities as well as their academic record and financial need.

Any Sycamore School student in grades six through 11 enrolled in the band, orchestra or choir music program is eligible to apply for a scholarship for summer camps including residential camps and day camps.

Any Sycamore High School graduating senior intending to major in music in college may apply for the Senior Music Scholarship, with three being given, one in each of the following areas: choir, band and orchestra.

The Continuing College Music Scholarship is available to one or several Sycamore High School graduates that currently are a college junior or senior majoring in music.

Deadlines for various scholarships are as follows: Summer Music Camp Scholarship applications must be submitted to the student’s music teacher by March 24. Senior Music Scholarship applications must be submitted by April 28, and Continuing College Music Scholarship applications must be submitted by July 14 to scholarship chairwoman Laurie Emmer.

No strangers to playoff drama Sycamore players drawing from their experience in other postseason runs

jseverson@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – The Sycamore boys basketball team managed to make key plays in the final minute Tuesday to extend an unexpected playoff run for the second time in consecutive games.

For the Spartans’ key players, however, this isn’t their first pressure-packed rodeo.

Despite coming into the playoffs with a losing record, Sycamore (14-15) is relying on the experience of seniors who were a part of teams that made deep postseason runs in other sports as the Spartans gear up for a meeting against Marengo in the Class 3A Genoa-Kingston Sectional championship at 7 p.m. Friday.

“All of them have made big plays throughout the postseason,” Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti said. “They’ll look back in 10, 20 years and realize how special this run has been. We talk about creating a legacy, and they’ve certainly done that.”

Senior center James Marcinkowski, who had a walk-off single for the Spartans’ baseball team during the playoffs last year, made a pair of free throws with 0.1 seconds left Tuesday in Sycamore’s 36-35 victory over Belvidere in the sectional semifinal. Senior guard Jack Mizgalski connected on a go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime of the Spartans’ 37-36 victory over Kaneland in the regional championship, and smacked a walk-off grand slam during the baseball team’s run to a supersectional in 2016. Senior guard Ty Sulaver, who was the quarterback of the Sycamore football team that reached the Class 5A semifinals, provided the key assist on Mizgalski’s 3-pointer against Kaneland.

“That’s why we’ve stressed how important it is that our kids are involved in more than one sport,” said Joe Ryan, who is the football coach and assistant basketball coach for Sycamore.

“There’s a lot of carryover. The sports are different, I get that, but in crunch time, it’s not. You have to have guys who have been there and understand the pressure and not be afraid of pressure. Those guys have been in those situations and they aren’t afraid of them. Now, it doesn’t mean they don’t get nervous, but they’re not afraid of it.

That’s huge.”

• Winner advances to the DeKalb Supersectional off four consecutive victories to make a Class 3A supersectional – including Marcinkowski’s walk-off single in a 4-3 win over Rockford Christian in the sectional championship.

“It’s the same concept, you have to win when it matters,” Marcinkowski said. “Football got hot at the right time.

Baseball, we were all right, but then got hot at the right time. Now basketball, it’s about senior leadership and getting hot at the right time.”

In the fall, the Sycamore football team started the season 1-3 before

sneaking into the playoffs with a 5-4 record. However, it won three straight in the playoffs, including a 29-22 overtime victory over top-seeded Sterling in which Sulaver led a last-minute drive to force the extra period. Two other football players, Jordan Tolzin and Keyshawn Stallworth, also are starters on the basketball team.

Like the football team, the basketball squad doesn’t have a Division I-level player on the roster. Instead, both teams have rallied around the strength of the collective unit.

“Sometimes it works out in different ways,” Sulaver said. “In football, we just sort of collected as a group, and basketball that’s how it is. Each person has their night. Everyone is a star in their own way. Like James, his night was [Tuesday] night.”

The Sycamore boys basketball team had fallen to 10-15 on Feb. 18 after a loss to Ottawa. However, the Spartans won the regular-season finale (46-45 over Morris) before rattling off three more straight wins. Three of the four wins

have come by a point.

In the playoffs, Sycamore had its season in jeopardy after trailing in the final minute of the past two contests.

Against Belvidere, the Spartans trailed by a point when Austin Revolinski made a 3-pointer with 14.7 seconds remaining before Marcinkowski’s free throws. Against Kaneland, the Spartans trailed by two points in overtime before Mizgalski connected on his 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining.

In both games, the Sycamore seniors didn’t flinch.

“I think it translates a lot,” Mizgalski said about experience in a deep playoff run. “Obviously, it’s different sports, different things, but the concept of winning is the same. Battling, going through adversity – we did a lot of that during baseball. We’re just confident that it’s not over when we’re down. We’ll pull some hits together, or we’ll pull some shots together.”

This is the fourth in a series of position previews on the Cubs.

This one hurt.

The Mariners peppered lefthander Brian Duensing for five hits and four runs (with an error along the way) in the ninth inning to beat the Cubs, 8-6, in a Cactus League game Thursday at Sloan Park.

But Duensing, who signed as a $2 million free agent in the winter, left the mound with the trainer with one out and the bases loaded because of tightness in his lower back.

He was to be evaluated again Friday morning.

“He’s done pretty good in college,” Joe Maddon said.

“He’s been pretty good in the minor leagues. He’s been pretty good as a rookie. He’s been pretty good as a second-year guy. He’s so grounded, and that’s the only thing. You see, with him, the method Kris Bryant with which he thinks and the support staff that he has, I’m not concerned.

“My biggest concern is always health. A guy like him, you want to keep him mentally and physically well. And if you can do that, there’s no reason he can’t continue to actually keep getting better.”

Bryant has handled major league pitching pretty well, too.

Rewinding Tilson’s Sox story to the very beginning

sgreenberg@suntimes.com GLENDALE, Ariz. – Charlie Tilson’s jersey hung down to his knees.

He might not have looked like much, but he dug into the batter’s box like a young man who knew a thing or two about a thing or two. The pitch came.

The bat fired off his shoulder.

Double.

The pitcher recently had completed his freshman season of high school ball.

Tilson had just wrapped up fourth grade.

A prodigy? The Tilsons weren’t fully sure, but older brother Steve’s summer-league team was down a player and, well, Charlie always was game for anything baseball-related.

“Nobody loved baseball like Charlie” said Joe Tilson, father of the White Sox center fielder.

That Tilson was ahead of his time merely gives him something in common with so many of his peers who made it all the way to the major leagues. That the Wilmette native and former New Tri-

er star is getting to play for the team he grew up rooting for makes him special.

The basics of the 24-year-old’s story have somewhat made the rounds. Unfortunately, the story has been on hold since August, when – two days after the Sox traded reliever Zach Duke to St. Louis for him – Tilson tore his left hamstring diving for a gapper off the bat of the Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera.

It was Tilson’s big Charlie Tilson league debut, and it ended his season. He entered spring training as the seeming front-runner for the starting job in center this season, but a right foot injury has kept him out of action since the early going.

“Don’t count him out” for Opening Day, manager Rick Renteria advised Thursday. Still, Tilson’s story – begging to move forward – is stuck on “pause.” So you know what? Let’s try to rewind instead.

he moved to the Chicago area in 1980. A Cubs fan, too – hey, it’s allowed – who eventually bought season tickets on both sides of town.

When Charlie, the middle of five children, first started going to games, he’d watch intently, never taking his eyes off the field, while others his age toggled between desperate needs for concession items and the bathroom.

“He would just soak it up,” said his father, a prominent attorney at a Loop law firm.

When Charlie was 6, he made an unassisted triple play. He caught a popup at shortstop, tagged one baserunner and stepped on the bag at third – all before his coaches could shout to him what to do.

The Sox’s “These Kids Can Play” slogan resonated with Tilson, who pledged his allegiance to Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Lee, Paul Konerko, Mark Buehrle. Whenever his dad took him to Wrigley Field, he’d wear Sox black.

Unless the Cubs were playing the Cardinals, in which case Charlie would

wear red.

Soon, center fielder Scott Podsednik came – Tilson’s favorite Sox player to this day. When the team won the World Series in 2005, Charlie and Steve begged their parents to let them teepee the houses of their Cubs-fan neighbors.

As Tilson grew into a young star, his summer-league pals on the Highwood Braves came around one by one to the idea that a future major leaguer was in their midst.

“And now I’m here,” Tilson said.

“I’m really here. It’s the ultimate opportunity. It’s very special to me.”

And for his family?

“There’s nothing quite like having your kid’s dream come true,” Joe Tilson said. “I think every parent enjoys that more than their own success. To have him home playing for the Sox – his lifelong dream – is surreal for all of us.”

About that pause button: Tilson will play again soon. A few days? A week?

Maybe then, his story really will get good.

Kris Bryant has had himself quite a past few months.

He survived a slip of the foot on some wet sod to record the assist for the final out of the 2016 World Series, giving the Cubs their first title since 1908.

Shortly after that, he received the National League MVP Award, followed by a trip to the White House.

And, oh yes, Bryant got married.

What possibly could be next for the 25-year-old third baseman, who added the MVP to his Rookie of the Year Award from 2015?

The stratosphere seems likely, but you never would know it watching Bryant at the Cubs’ spring training camp in Mesa, Arizona.

On mornings early in camp, Bryant would walk out to the cages with a bat resting on his shoulder and a smile on his face as he prepared for the day.

His manager doesn’t seem worried about how Bryant is handling things.

Day 1 underwhelming for Bears

Team says goodbye to Cutler, Jeffery

As NFL free agency opening acts go, Thursday’s was a real “No, they didn’t?”

The Houston Texans’ swap with the Cleveland Browns shipping Brock Osweiler out of town was an NBA salary-dump deal, and I never have seen anything quite like it in the NFL. The New England Patriots just don’t buy talent the way they rushed to the bank for Stephon Gilmore.

For the second straight season, the Jacksonville Jaguars are on their way to winning the offseason again after snagging defensive end Calais Campbell, cornerback A.J. Bouye, safety Barry Church and left tackle Branden Albert. Last year’s remarkable haul made the Jaguars a 3-13 football team. Will they be better this year?

The $25 million-plus the Chargers guaranteed offensive tackle Russell Okung and the like amount Carolina gave OT Matt Kalil are insane.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush And did receiver Alshon Jeffery really agree to a single year at $14 million? No, he didn’t, did he? Yep. With all of that as context, the Bears’ first day of free agency was somewhat predictable, if less than impressive.

Clearly the biggest story of the day was the long expected release of Jay Cutler. What I found most interesting was that it was announced as having come at the quarterback’s request.

I’m sorry, but I just don’t believe that. Once it became clear the Bears were going to sign Mike Glennon, there was no way they were bringing back Cutler.

The bottom line, however, is it was time for a change for both the team and the QB. My hope is that a few years down the road, Bears fans will come to understand through the prism of history that Cutler was not the reason for the Bears’ mediocrity since his arrival.

He did, however, fail to perform up to the level of

Hopefully, Bears fans will understand Glennon isn’t being brought in to be that guy, either.

Historically, backup quarterbacks brought to new clubs

to lead them fail, and there is nothing on Glennon’s résumé or on his 18 games worth of tape to suggest he will be the exception.

He is a big man with an excellent pocket presence, cannon for an arm and impressive release.

But he never has completed 60 percent or more of his passes. His career 30-touchdowns-to-15-interceptions ratio is unremarkable, and he is a poor athlete with no movement skills and a sack waiting to happen.

As solid as the Bears are at guard and center, if they see Glennon as anything more than a bridge, it is essential they upgrade the tackle positions.

On the upside, his comp stylistically would be Eli Manning, and better accuracy and ball security can be coached.

The Quintin Demps signing honestly caught me by surprise because with Tony Jefferson, T.J. McDonald, Church and D.J. Swearinger also all available at safety, and all younger and more athletic, it never occurred to me Demps was on the Bears’ radar.

The signing just feels too much like the Antrel Rolle

deal.

Former Steelers receiver Markus Wheaton is a really nice get if he can stay healthy.

A healthy Wheaton will be a great fit in the slot between Kevin White and Cameron Meredith and is an instant and huge upgrade to the Bears’ team speed and return game.

At the end of the day, I think the less than ebullient reaction we all are seeing from Bears Nation is mostly because general manager Ryan Pace, possibly unintentionally, had suggested we should expect more than a couple of guys in Glennon and Demps who have spent most of their careers as backups.

But chins up Bears fans, the ceilings on Glennon and Wheaton still are fairly high, and there still are more than three months of free agency to work with and a lot more talent on the board.

It could be worse, we could be looking at the Bears’ moves and saying, “No, they didn’t?”

Jeffery signs 1-year, $14M deal with Eagles

kfishbain@profootballweekly.com Alshon Jeffery’s career with the Bears is over, and the 2012 second-round pick is betting on himself, signing a one-year deal worth $14 million with the Eagles.

Jeffery will enter his third consecutive contract year. Soft-tissue injuries in 2015 limited him to nine games, and he played under the franchise tag in 2016, when he was suspended four games for a PED violation.

Jeffery leaves the Bears ranked third in franchise history with 4,549 receiving yards in his five seasons.

He had only two touchdown catches in 2016 and clearly couldn’t find what he was seeking on the open market in terms of a long-term deal. NFL Network reported that the Vikings offered Jeffery a multiyear contract, and the

receiver turned it down.

In Philadelphia, Jeffery will be the Eagles’ No. 1 receiver for second-year QB Carson Wentz, and he reunites with Mike Groh, who was the Bears’ receivers coach from 2013 to 2015. Jeffery should be a good complement for the other Eagles addition at wideout, the speedy Torrey Smith.

The Bears now have a major need to fill at Alshon Jeffery the receiver position.

Eddie Royal is expected to be released when healthy, according to the Chicago Tribune, leaving new quarterback Mike Glennon with Kevin White, Cameron Meredith, Josh Bellamy, Rueben Randle and Daniel Braverman.

Safety help: The Bears added a veteran safety for the second time in three offseasons, agreeing to terms on a

three-year deal with Quintin Demps averaging $4.5 million a year, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

The $13.5 million contract nets Demps $5 million in his first year, according to ESPN’s Adam Caplan.

Demps, who turns 32 in June, played in and started 13 games for the Texans last season and had six interceptions to go with nine passes defensed and 55 tackles. In 14 games (13 starts) in 2015, Demps had six passes defensed and a pick.

In 2014, Demps played in all 16 games with nine starts for the Giants and had four interceptions. He picked off four passes as a member of the Chiefs in 2013.

The Bears will be Demps’ fifth team in his NFL career, which began with the Eagles in 2008 as a fourth-round pick out of UTEP.

Despite being in the league for nine seasons, Demps has appeared in only 107 games and has been a full-time starter for two years. Demps joins a young Bears safeties room that struggled mightily last season. Adrian Amos, Harold Jones-Quartey and Deon Bush combined for one interception last season.

The move comes two years after the Bears signed Antrel Rolle, then 32, to a three-year contract.

CHICAGO – The Blackhawks generally don’t concern themselves too much with playoff seeding and home-ice advantage, but the idea of chasing down the Minnesota Wild – who just a few weeks ago had a nine-point lead in the Central Division – has been a welcome carrot at the end of a stick as they face a daunting stretch of 17 games in 31 days to close out the regular season.

But that would appear to be wishful thinking.

A study published in the journal Nutrition Reviews in 2016 analyzed multiple studies and found no difference in the LDL cholesterol level between people who used coconut oil and people who used butter. It does appear, however, that consumption of coconut oil was linked to lower triglyceride levels as compared to beef fat. That said, the cholesterol profiles found among consumers of coconut oil are much worse than those found among people who consume olive oil, canola oil, or even corn, safflower and palm oil.

I believe you should look at coconut oil as a saturated fat. The current recommendation is that these fats should make up only 10 percent of your diet. You could use coconut oil as a replacement to the fat from meat or dairy.

However, if you have a family history of heart disease, I would use olive and canola oils in recipes and when cooking; these oils have shown beneficial effects in regards to cholesterol.

In addition, if you have risk factors for heart disease, there is a significant benefit in staying on the statin you are taking. I would not stop that in lieu of adding coconut oil to your diet.

Dear Doctor: I’m 75, healthy, and want to stay that way – despite a bad family history regarding hearts and arteries. I have taken 10 milligrams of Lipitor daily for several years, but am wondering if I should try coconut oil to lower my cholesterol?

Dear Reader: Coconut oil is very high in saturated fat, with 12 grams per tablespoon.

Compare that to olive oil, which has 1.9 grams of saturated fat per tablespoon. Both have 14 grams of total fat, but almost all of olive oil’s is monounsaturated, widely considered to be better for the heart and cardiovascular system. Saturated fats in meats and dairy products, on the other hand, have been shown to increase LDL cholesterol, the so-called “bad” cholesterol linked to coronary artery disease.

For someone with a family history of vascular disease, we really have no good data on coconut oil’s ability to reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes. We do have observational data from societies that have lower heart disease rates and include coconuts as a significant percentage of their diet. But they’re consuming the coconut, not just the oil of the coconut.

One factor to consider: The meat of the coconut has a considerable amount of fiber.

This fiber is not found in the oil, and it may be the fiber that confers the greatest benefit from coconut consumption. Also, the diet and lifestyle of societies that consume large amounts of coconut cannot be translated well to our Western diets and lifestyle, meaning they probably are healthier in many respects.

One aspect of coconut oil that we can assess is how it might affect cholesterol levels. As I noted earlier, coconut oil is high in saturated fat. But the majority of the saturated fat is in the form of lauric acid; the majority of the saturated fat in animal fat is palmitic acid. Lauric acid is absorbed
