Behind the house at Fairview Cemetery If you drive down South First Street to the entrance of Fairview Cemetery in DeKalb you may notice a building near the entrance with a two-car garage attached.

It is the cemetery office, but originally it was a display model for a new concept in building construction, later occupied by the caretaker.

In the early 1970s, Dura-Plex Industries of Peoria announced a low-cost modular house, probably best known by most people as a prefab.

This unit was made with fiberglass panels with a core of polyurethane foam sandwiched in between. The Crusader model at the cemetery is a three-bedroom, 1,200-square-foot building with 29 sandwich panels glued together and a roof attached. The foundation is a poured cement slab that overlaps notches in the panels to anchor it in place.

The electrical wiring and PVC plumbing were built into the panels and cutouts for aluminum windows and door frames were pre-cut. The house has remained on the site for more than 40 years and has needed only minor repairs and a new roof, plus a garage was added later. It was a bargain at $9,000 plus the cost of the lot.

The first model was erected at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in 1971 and then a few others around the state, including Marengo and Belvidere, according to newspaper accounts from the time. A second home also was reportedly built somewhere south of DeKalb, but I drove around Gurler and Keslinger roads and could not locate it this past weekend. Three DeKalb men were named as distributors, Simon Schafer, Donald J. Kohler and Lloyd E. Cooper. Cooper, now deceased, was a cousin of mine, and his daughter, Carol Prentice, told me she recalled her father’s involvement.

Lisa Larson, the cemetery administrator, said the cemetery office structure was built in the summer of 1975. Grubb’s widow, Ruby, and daughter, Karen, said the house was a display model for showing prospective buyers and investors, and later was turned over to the cemetery association for its use.

Unfortunately for the stockholders and company officials, they were not successful in marketing the prefab units. Dura-Plex was absorbed by another company and the stock is now valueless. I also heard that the trades unions were adamantly opposed to these prebuilt homes because of the loss of work that would result for their members. One of the stockholders from Sycamore told me he sold 300 of his shares for a profit when the stock split, but still has the other 300 shares with no value.

According to an announcement in the Daily Chronicle in May 1972, about 1.4 million shares were being offered for sale at $2 each. A meeting was held at the local Holiday Inn where prospective stockholders were given the sales pitch.

If anyone knows the whereabouts of that Dura-Plex house south of DeKalb please let me know. I would like to find out how it has held up 40-plus years.

High winds leave fires, power outages in wake across DeKalb County

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – Calmer conditions are expected Thursday in DeKalb County, a day after high winds kindled brush fires and caused hundreds of people to lose power in the area.

The brush fire was reported about 1:45 p.m. Wednesday along Barber Greene Road, southeast of the intersection with Airport Road, near Vulcan Materials Co. at 15622 Barber Greene Road. The flames burned a few hundred square feet of shrubs and brush and also scorched some utility poles along the road, but it did not appear to cause serious damage.

Sycamore Assistant Fire Chief Todd Turner said the fire was fairly harmless but gaining access to it was a big concern.

“We had to get ahead of it pretty quickly to stop the spread, because the fire was in a gravel pit just beyond the road,” Turner said. “We needed bodies to get into these ravines, where in spots it’s a big drop-off, but we got into it and got it done.”

The fire was in rural Sycamore, and the call was first received by the Sycamore Fire Department, where firefighters called for help from DeKalb, Maple Park, Cortland and Genoa units. By 4 p.m., the fire was out and all firefighters had left the scene.

Sycamore Fire Lt. Darrin Hepker said the fire was the only serious weather-related call his department had received as of Wednesday afternoon.

“We’ve had reports of a leaning utility pole, but there have been no downed power lines or other damage thus far,” Hepker said.

The National Weather Service said that although the winds would not cause more problems Thursday, the low humidity level meant that the risk of wildfires again would be elevated.

A red flag warning also was issued, discouraging anyone from open burning. The severe weather Wednesday also affected ComEd service, with more than 200 people experiencing outages in the county, some of which may last through Thursday.

In Maple Park, 152 customers had their service disrupted by the weather.

ComEd estimated full restoration by 2:15 p.m. Thursday.

More than 100 power customers were affected in DeKalb. Most of them

were near Prather Park, at 1441 Clark St. Power there was set to be restored no later than Wednesday night.

Also, DeKalb firefighters responded when the wind brought down a tree that knocked down a power line near the intersection of South Seventh and Roosevelt streets.

ComEd external affairs manager George Gaulrapp said a couple of utility poles were down in Sandwich, which affected electrical service to area residents, but heavy winds had led to outages across the county.

“We were anticipating this, and we have been proactive in the last few years to prepare for weather like this,” Gaulrapp said. “While outages really depend on if there are down wires or equipment failure, they are being resolved quicker than they were in the past.”

Gaulrapp added that ComEd’s online outage map is a great resource for customers to check updates of reported outages.

“As long as things keep going the way they are, we should be able to keep to that timeline, but we need people to be patient,” Gaulrapp said.

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – In response to a report that city crime rates greatly increased during 2016, DeKalb’s mayoral and aldermanic candidates addressed how they plan to combat this surge during a forum Wednesday hosted by the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce.

Questions were submitted anonymously by audience members, but DeKalb’s four mayoral candidates and two 4th Ward candidates who were at the Egyptian Theatre were all asked how they planned to reduce crime.

Mayor John Rey, who’s seeking re-election, said he is encouraging DeKalb Police Chief Gene Lowery to continue his leadership by creating crime reduction initiatives.

Rey added that educating the community and increasing its crime awareness also are important steps.

Since the most significant increase came from property crimes, such as motor-vehicle theft and burglary, mayoral candidate Misty Haji-Sheikh suggested having officers place business cards on vulnerable vehicles to remind individuals to lock their vehicles at all times.

“I’ve met with Chief Lowery on other things, but I’m trying to be proactive,” Haji-Sheikh said.

Michael Embrey, also running for mayor, said there should be more investment in high-tech items for police. He also was weary of community policing and neighborhood watch programs as they only occur once people need to take real action against crime.

said that the increase in crime did not surprise him as much as the age of the offenders.

“What alarmed me about the report was that it involved so many of our youth and young offenders,” Smith said.

Smith called for more options in youth programs to deter young adults from committing property crimes and other offenses.

According to the report, the top female juvenile offender in DeKalb was 14 years old, had 104 contacts with the police and had been arrested 18 times, while the top male juvenile offender was 17, had 95 contacts with the police and was linked to 83 crimes.

Incumbent 4th Ward Alderman Bob Snow and Patrick Fagan, one of Snow’s two opponents, also fielded a question about reducing crime. The other 4th Ward candidate, Michael Bauling, did not attend the forum.

Fagan also called for more youth programs and an increase in resources for DeKalb police.

“We’ve got to give the department as much money and resources for them to handle this crime situation,” Fagan said.

Snow highlighted the DeKalb department’s partnership with Northern Illinois University police and how there has been more cooperation between the two agencies than there has ever been, and how it has been a great help reducing crime.

Second Ward Alderman Bill Finucane and William Lamb, his opponent, did not receive a crime question.

Born: February 27, 1941; in Sycamore, IL Died: March 7, 2017; in DeKalb, IL Gloria J. Roach, 76, of DeKalb, Illinois, died Tuesday, March 7, 2017, at her home.

Born February 27, 1941, in Sycamore, Illinois, Gloria was the daughter of Robert and Nora (King) Nepean.

Gloria was employed by Cords, Brody Coat Manufacturing, and retired from Ideal Industries. Gloria was a very charitable person, loved birds and flowers, and enjoyed fishing in Canada with her fiancée, Leroy. She was an awesome mom, sister, aunt, grams, greatgrams, and neighbor. Everyone who met her, loved her.

She is survived by her honey, Leroy Park; son, John Roach of Malta; daughters, Jeanne (David) Manis of Greeneville, Tennessee, Jennifer Parker of Lenexa, Kansas; Leroy’s children, Bridget (John) Lucius of DeKalb, Timothy (Brenda) Park of Ohio, Tammy (Larry) Knight of Tennessee; grandchildren, Cassandra (Conrad), Andrew (Beulah), Trevor (Katie), Trent, Caleb, Rachel, Hannah, Brianna, Bailey, Alec, Nicole, Kaitlyn, Rebecca, Cydney, Caleb, Riley, Chase; several great-grandchildren; siblings, Carol (Chuck) Simpson of Cortland, Dorothy West of Sycamore, John Nepean of Lanark; special sister-in-law, Carolyn Nepean of Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Edith, Betty, Rosemary, Jeanette, Ruby; and brothers, Bobby and Lonnie.

ROGER B. WATSON Roger B. Watson, 78, of Genoa died suddenly on Tuesday, March 8, 2017.

His visitation will be on Friday from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Genoa and on Saturday from 11:00 to noon at the church. His funeral service will be Saturday, March 11th at 12:00 pm at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 33930 North State Road, Genoa, IL. Burial will follow at the Genoa Cemetery.

The city matches funds for property owners up to $5,000 a grant. The gateway facade grant awards would be considered on a competitive basis, Gregory said.

“What we’re hoping for is a compet-

itive process where we receive potentially more grants than we have funding for, and the architectural review [committee] can consider those and make recommendations to the council,” he said.

Gregory said the council would have to consider each year whether to continue the gateway facade grants based on how much funding is available.

Eligible improvements include removing incompatible facades or accessories, restoring historic facade materials or buildings, painting, tuckpointing, installing handicap accessible entrances and repairing or replacing exterior windows and doors.

Under the proposal, gateway applicants also could receive grants for landscaping.

If approved, the priority application period would be from April 1 to May 31. The architectural review committee would review all applications and make recommendations to the council for the award in June.

SYCAMORE – Sycamore’s facade grant program could expand to include properties leading into downtown under a proposal city officials are considering for fiscal 2018.

The city established a downtown facade improvement program in 2004 to provide matching grant assistance for facade improvements in the downtown business district.

If expanded, the program could also be used for “gateway” properties that front the Route 64 corridor from Airport Road to Peace Road, as well as those along North Main Street between Route 64 and the Kishwaukee River.

A: Henry Theodore Cushman (18441922) started a factory in North Bennington, Vermont, in the early 1870s and made corks and erasers. By 1880, he had a mail-order business selling stationers’

A: The first Woody Woodpecker cartoon ran in movie theaters in 1941. According to one of our readers, this Woody Woodpecker harmonica toy was sold at movie theaters in the ‘40s. The Woody Woodpecker harmonica and a Woody Woodpecker kazoo toy were premiums offered for 25 cents and proof of purchase from one of Kellogg’s cereals. Kellogg was a sponsor of the “The Woody Woodpecker Show,” originally on TV in 1957 and 1958.

Reruns of the original shows ran for several years after that. New episodes were made in the early 1970s and reruns of those shows have been on TV since then.

He and his wife lived in Bearsville, New York, near the Woodstock Art Colony, for several years before returning to Salt Lake City. Wassmer did over 2,000 paintings and drawings, most done after 1945. Strange antiques and collectibles with mysterious shapes and unknown purposes are sometimes part of a larger piece.

Mysterious wooden wheels with wooden spokes and about a 45-inch diameter were popular in the 1950s. They were hung on a wall as a decoration or put flat in a flower bed. Each section between the spokes was planted with a different herb or flower. The wheels were copied in giftware catalogs but were never identified as part of a “walking” spinning wheel used to spin woolen yarn. A curved “bowl”shaped like part of the border of a circle is sometimes sold at an antique shop. The bowl usually is made by important porcelain companies and it seems to be a bargain.

It is part of a set of four crescent-shaped bowls and one round bowl that fit together to make a circle. It held foods like olives, pickles and sauces or several types of vegetables in the curved bowls with sauce in the round center bowl. Most sets were made with the five bowls and a lid for the center piece. Once a piece broke, the set couldn’t be used. But the pieces still were attractive when used alone. A set made by Coalport porcelain in the Imari pattern sold in 2016 for $923. Single curved bowls can be found for $50 to $75. A covered center bowl might be $100.

Chicago looks to New York for policing ideas

CHICAGO – Even before President Donald Trump tweeted a threat to send “in the Feds” to curb Chicago’s gun violence, he was saying on the campaign trail that there was a simple solution to the bloodshed: police should get tougher. Chicago should follow the lead of New York City, Trump’s administration has said, and crack down on even the smallest offenses.

It turns out Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson visited the New York Police Department weeks before the Trump administration advice. But what he gleaned from a city that has achieved long term success in fighting crime was more nuanced than a Trump-inspired police crackdown.

Johnson came home with ideas aimed at increasing community trust by using technology to get Chicago police officers out of their squad cars, and putting new cadets in neighborhoods to walk the streets and talk to locals.

“We are only as strong as the faith the community has in us,” Johnson said.

Mumps outbreak declared at Barrington High School

BARRINGTON – Health officials have declared a mumps outbreak at a suburban Chicago high school after confirming a third case among its students.

The Lake County Health Department said it has nearly 20 suspected mumps cases at Barrington High School, along with an adult from Lake Zurich and a Libertyville High School student.

Those cases come as the U.S. is in the midst of one of the largest mumps surges in decades, with schools and college campuses in many states contending with outbreaks.

The Daily Herald reported Barrington school district Superintendent Brian Harris said fewer than 10 of the school’s some 3,000 students don’t have

Prom dress rules lead to body shaming accusation

ROCKFORD – A Rockford high school is being accused of body shaming after releasing guidelines on how girls should dress for the prom.

Boylan Catholic High School in Rockford has issued a 21-page rule book – complete with pictures – on what is and isn’t acceptable at this year’s prom.

But the guidelines have ruffled feathers with a line that reads: “Some girls may wear the same dress but due to body types, one dress may be acceptable while the other is not.”

Body image and media expert Robyn Goodman of the University of Florida told the Rockford Register Star that line supports discrimination and body shaming because girls don’t have a choice on how their bodies are made.

Judge: Comptroller may choose funds from which to pay state workers

SPRINGFIELD – A judge has ruled that the Illinois state comptroller may direct which accounts should be used to pay state employees.

Democratic Comptroller Susana Mendoza reported late Tuesday that St. Clair County Circuit Judge Robert LeChien ruled against Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner. She may decide how to pay 600 employees.

Rauner wanted the Department of Central Management Services workers paid from general revenue. But there’s a two-year budget stalemate and no appropriations for that fund.

Mendoza indicated they should be paid from the agency’s garage and maintenance funds. Mendoza said those funds have $93 million available.

Rauner’s office didn’t immediately comment Wednesday.

That policy helped drive the number of homicides down in one decade from more than 2,200 a year to fewer than 700.

Since then, the number of homicides in New York has continued to decline. In January the police department announced that there had been a near record low 335 homicide in 2016 – less than half the tally in Chicago, which has less than half the population. And New York has done this with a lighter policing touch.

Madigan pushes to banish statute of limitations on child assaults

CHICAGO – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, citing the actions of former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, is pushing for the elimination of statutes of limitations on child abuse and assault crimes.

Madigan on Tuesday testified before the Senate Criminal Law Committee in support of Senate Bill 189, which the committee passed and sent on to the full Senate for consideration. She said children who suffer sexual assault and abuse often spend a lifetime recovering from the violations.

Madigan said Hastert inflicted “unbelievable pain” on the youth he molested at the school where he coached wrestling before entering politics. She added he only got a “slap on the wrist.”

The 75-year-old is serving a 15-month sentence in federal prison for violating banking laws as he sought to silence one of his victims with hush money.

Industry, consumer groups oppose health bill, Ryan seeks unity

WASHINGTON – Pivotal industry and consumer groups mounted intensifying opposition to the Republican health care bill as GOP leaders labored Wednesday to rally a divided party behind their high-stakes overhaul drive. Lawmakers cast Congress’ initial votes on the legislation as House Speaker Paul Ryan praised the proposal as “what good, conservative health care reform looks like.”

The American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association and AARP, the nation’s largest advocacy group for older people, were arrayed against the GOP measure. Seven years ago their backing was instrumental in enacting President Barack Obama’s health care statute, which President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are intent on erasing.

The hospitals – major employers in many districts – wrote lawmakers complaining about the bill’s cuts in Medicaid and other programs and said more uninsured Americans seem likely, adding, “We ask Congress to protect our patients.”

Groups representing public, children’s, Catholic and other hospitals also expressed opposition.

Trump met at the White House late Wednesday with leaders of six conservative groups that have opposed the GOP legislation, and several voiced optimism afterward.

“I’m encouraged that the president indicated they’re pushing to make changes in the bill,” said David McIntosh, head of the Club for Growth, although he provided no specifics.

Underscoring Trump’s potential impact, Energy and Commerce Chairman Greg Walden, R-Ore., said of GOP holdouts, “A lot of them, they maybe haven’t felt the inertia that comes with Air Force One landing in their district.”

Illinois senators, don’t give up

If it were up to us, we probably would not have called the “grand bargain” introduced in the Illinois Senate “grand” or a “bargain,” because frankly, it is neither majestic nor one heck of a deal. We would have opted for a descriptor along the lines of “an urgent understanding.”

Regardless of what it’s called, the intent behind the 12 interlocking bills was noble – and desperately needed. These measures are the product of the determination, true bipartisanship leadership and sheer guts shown by Senate President John Cullerton and Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno.

Cullerton, a Democrat from Chicago, and Radogno, a Republican from Lemont, provided a rare demonstration of cooperation in the Statehouse.

Exhausted by the bickering and meetings with top leaders that went nowhere, and frustrated that Illinoisans continued to suffer because of the absence of a state budget for more than a year and a half, the Senate’s leaders changed the playbook. They purposely left Gov. Bruce Rauner and House Speaker Michael Madigan out of the discussion as they started to craft a spending plan where no one would get everything they wanted.

The plan would include a cornucopia of items: school funding reform, expansion of gambling, changes to procurement, borrowing to pay off the more than $11 billion in unpaid bills, an increase in the income-tax rate, a temporary property tax freeze, workers’ compensation reform and more.

The January announcement of the plan provided the start of the new General Assembly with much-needed positive energy, especially as the stopgap budget had just ended and universities, businesses and social service agencies were back to not being paid. After votes were put off several times, the Senate on Tuesday passed five of the measures.

And then came Wednesday, when it appeared to fall apart. Radogno told Cullerton there would be “very little if any Republican support other than herself” for the remaining measures. Cullerton said Republican support had dissipated because Rauner “decided to interject himself in this process.” Cullerton saw no point in calling the bills, which he described as tough votes that needed support from both parties, just to see them defeated. Rauner’s office said progress had been made in the Senate but more work was “needed to achieve a good deal for taxpayers.”

Not surprisingly, Senate Democrats were furious.

It would be understandable, but predictable, if they are unwilling to work again with Republicans on a compromise after last week’s events fractured trust.

On behalf of Illinois’ taxpayers, we implore Cullerton and Radogno to not give up. No one else has been willing to work on the difficult task of compromise.

While most politicians under the dome view compromise as defeat, Cullerton and Radogno embraced it as a path toward fiscal stability and hope for the state.

Media ban: A gift to tyrants everywhere When President Donald Trump called the U.S. news media “the enemy of the American People” and brandished the moniker “fake news” at reports he didn’t like, tyrants everywhere perked up.

They heard the president say exactly what they have been saying about nettlesome journalists who expose human rights abuses, corruption and rigged elections.

Trump’s remarks have a ripple effect overseas, signaling that the United States no longer will champion freedom of the press and expression. This will inevitably lead to more repression.

Cambodia, which last year sentenced a man to 18 months in prison for a Facebook post, was one of the first to seize upon Trump’s approach. A government spokesman, noting how the White House had barred several U.S. outlets from a briefing, warned Radio Free Asia and Voice of America about their news coverage, which is quite straightforward and therefore threatening to the gov-

ernment of Prime Minister Hun Sen. The spokesman declared, “Freedom of expression is subject to law and must respect the state’s power.”

Respect of state power and the ruling Communist Party is also what China demands in no uncertain terms from its news media, insisting they “have the party as their family name.” China’s propagandists have started to mimic Trump’s methods in news articles. The party’s leading newspaper, People’s Daily, denounced Western news coverage of a Chinese lawyer and human rights advocate who said he had been tortured by splashing a photo with the words “FAKE NEWS.” The paper said it was “fabricated to tarnish China’s image.”

In Russia, where press freedom has been corralled into a small space under President Vladimir Putin and the dark arts of propaganda and disinformation are well practiced, the Foreign Ministry has set up a new section of its

website for “fake news,” with a big red stamp of “FAKE” for reports that it does not like. Among those so branded was a New York Times article describing the new practice.

Trump has a personally contradictory relationship with the news media. He long has hungered for favorable coverage. But he appears to see the news media in strictly promotional terms, not as a mechanism of democracy to probe and criticize.

His behavior has global consequences. The press would not be free in Cambodia, China or Russia if a different U.S. president had been elected. But the United States has a long tradition of speaking out against crackdowns on the news media, and sometimes those interventions make a difference.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says that “American foreign policy must promote our core values of freedom, democracy and stability.”Does the president agree?

VIEWS Ramesh Ponnuru But just because people with varying views have reasons to believe Trump doesn’t mean he’s right.

There was just enough in the news to buttress the story for the believers.

Reports for Heat Street, the Guardian and the BBC over several months had suggested, with thin sourcing, that the FBI had sought to monitor transactions involving Trump aides.

Of course, even if those reports are true, they do not establish what Trump alleged: that Obama had personally ordered the surveillance. They don’t even establish that Trump himself was being surveilled, or that the surveillance took the form of wiretapping.

But they do leave open the possibility that the Obama administration conducted improper surveillance of the Trump team. Julian Sanchez, a journalist who writes about technology

and the law, raises one scenario: What if the FBI was asking for the authority to monitor foreigners as a back-door way to get incriminating information on Americans working for Trump?

That would have opened the door to the politically motivated use of the Obama administration’s powers. The denials from Obama’s spokesmen, and the other current and former government officials, do not cover this scenario.

One way or another, it’s worth finding out. But Trump’s tactic of flinging around wild accusations based loosely on a few news reports makes uncovering the truth harder.

Nothing Trump’s own administration has said or done so far indicates that it takes his accusations seriously.

And that starts at the top with the president himself. Trump explicitly accused his predecessor of misconduct on the level of “Watergate,” and then moved on to tweeting about his feud with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Trump press aide Sarah Huckabee Sanders went on ABC to say that her boss may have been onto something – which means she can’t vouch for the

accuracy of his assertion.

Sean Spicer, his press secretary, has taken a similar tack: Trump’s claim has become a troubling report, on his telling. He then said that since oversight is continuing, the White House would have no further comment on the matter, a stance that was hard to square with Trump’s decision to give it maximum publicity. Spicer didn’t let an hour pass without commenting on it again.

In any other administration, this would be bizarre behavior. For this one, it’s par for the course.

Again: The possibility that Trump has some legitimate grievance about the behavior of the Obama administration can’t be ruled out. But there’s no reason to take that possibility more seriously than Trump himself seems to be taking it.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Candidates should talk to minority, low-income residents, too

To the Editor: With the upcoming municipal election, there has been much debate regarding topics such as the Egyptian Theatre, the downtown development project and tax incentives to attract businesses. This is understandable as these are all important issues and will affect many within the community.

However, there are a set of issues not being discussed, and it has everything to do with who is involved in the conversations.

There has been a glaring lack of minority representation within DeKalb politics, on both the voter and candidate side.

Approximately a third of DeKalb’s residents are minorities, who also tend to be lower income as well. The unique problems they face because of this are simply not being discussed.

For example, many low-income residents of DeKalb who live along Annie Glidden Road reside in a food desert. Those in the neighborhood who are unable to drive, whether for disability, age or financial reasons, are in an unfortunate situation. They must either walk 40 minutes to the nearest grocery store, attempt to carry all their groceries on public transportation (assuming their schedule allows), or buy their groceries at one of the numerous nearby, overpriced and less-healthy convenience

stores or gas stations.

The disadvantages to those living in food deserts are numerous and well recorded, and it is something thousands of DeKalb residents face. Yet it has not been mentioned.

This is just one example of a problem minority and low-income residents face.

It is easy to say that “if someone wants to say something, they should come and say it.” But years of disenfranchisement, lack of transportation, a second (or third) job, or simply not knowing, are reasons why so many low-income residents are not involved. To get everyone involved will take an intentional and difficult effort.

There is still time for future forums, meet-the-candidates events, and the election itself to be more representative of our city than they have been in the past. The city, community organizations and community activists all have a duty to assure all people of DeKalb that their voices will be heard and that their officials will look out for them.

We are all neighbors in this city, and we should care deeply about each other’s lives. This is not a zero-sum game, there are no losers when we help those who are currently not being helped.

When we come together as one DeKalb, we all win.

Seeking details from DeKalb candidates

To the Editor: Those running for office and those writing letters on their behalf need to do more to help me choose which candidates to support.

I pay attention to local government, read candidates’ web pages, and attend candidate forums, but have not finished deciding for whom to vote.

In the mayoral race, I’ve reduced my choice to two.

In the school board race, I have picked two and am seeking a third.

My problem is a lack of detailed information on program and policy ideas in the support letters and in the literature distributed by the candidates.

The letters and literature describe the families, character and history of public service of the candidates.

They offer bullet points on what the candidates would like to see happen, but do not tell us what their role would be in bringing about those goals.

What would they actually do if elected? The mayoral candidates advocate economic growth. If you want to improve the economy, tell me how you are going to do it, present specific, feasible ideas for economic growth, don’t just endorse the goal.

Candidates are in favor of intergroup

harmony. Nearly everyone supports intergroup peace and cooperation but bridging the social distance between groups is not easy.

What are the candidates ideas for how can it be done?

The candidates recognize the problems of crime in DeKalb but what would they do about it? Send in the troops? Set up neighborhood watch programs?

Fixing streets is a necessity but how can we pay for it, what might we have to cut or stop doing to pay for the repairs?

Do the candidates have a feasible plan?

Some candidates have presented thoughtful ideas on these issues, but others have not yet done so.

The people who will get my vote are the ones who are most likely to translate their stated goals into effective action and problem-solving.

I will take seriously letters and statements that provide such information.

I don’t need to be convinced that those running for office are good folk and concerned, they have demonstrated that they are by their willingness to take on what is often a thankless burden.

I need to be convinced that the candidates have ideas beyond bullet points to solve the real problems we face.

Suppose President Donald Trump has some basis for saying that the Barack Obama administration abused its investigative powers to go after him and his associates last year. The possibility cannot be ruled out at this point.

But Trump and his aides are making it hard to take the accusation seriously.

On Saturday morning, Trump tweeted that he had just learned that Obama had his wires tapped in Trump Tower right before the election. Neither he nor his aides offered proof. The claim has now been denied by a spokesman for the former president, by FBI Director James Comey and by former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Some people greeted Trump’s claim credulously. The president’s cheering section believed him, of course. So did some of his most bitter foes. Former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean took it as a given that Trump was right about being wiretapped, but said that it proved that a judge had “found probable cause that Trump was engaging in criminal activity.”

Former Heisman Trophy finalist Jordan Lynch was named the running backs coach for the Huskies, the school announced Wednesday.

Lynch finished third in the 2013 Heisman Trophy voting, the highest finish by a player in the Mid-American Conference, and helped lead the Huskies to the Orange Bowl in 2013.

“Obviously, with Jordan, the name speaks for itself,” NIU coach Rod Carey said. “Heisman Trophy finalist, got us to the Orange Bowl, got us to the cusp of a Fiesta Bowl, and set all sorts of records. He’s probably one of the most beloved players that have come through here in recent history. When you are talking about the greats of Huskie football, our tradition, you can’t do that without saying the name Jordan Lynch.”

Lynch spent the past two seasons in the Canadian Football League as a member of the Edmonton Eskimos. In the 2015 Grey Cup, Lynch scored the

game-winning touchdown on a 1-yard run.

“I always knew when I got done playing football, I wanted to get into coaching,” Lynch said. “I just love being around the players and being back at NIU. When [Carey] started talking to me about the possibility of a position opening up here, I took some time and thought about it. I felt it was a great opportunity for me, and I couldn’t pass it up. Some of my best memories of playing football have been here at Northern. To come back and help get the program get back to where it was appealed to me.”

Lynch certainly left his mark on the Huskies program as a player. In 2013, he rushed for a quarterback-record 1,920 yards and 23 touchdowns and was named first-team All-American by three outlets – including the Associated Press.

“Anytime you can keep alumni around here to talk about the old days when they were here, and what’s different and what’s changed, I think it’s important,” Lynch said. “To those guys, this program means everything to them. No one cares more about this

Trailing by as much as 22 in the first half, the No. 4-seeded Huskies climbed back and stunned No. 5 Ohio with a 72-71 victory in a quarterfinal of the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

The dramatic comeback sets up the Huskies for a semifinal against No. 8 seed Western Michigan at 11 a.m. Friday.

“In the locker room at halftime, we knew that we could come back,” NIU senior guard Ally Lehman said about the Huskies, who trailed 41-24 at halftime.

A barrage of 3-pointers by Ohio in the first quarter looked like it might force an early exit for NIU in the MAC Tournament. The Bobcats finished the game shooting 13 for 38 from beyond the arc – including making six in the first quarter and nine in the first half – and took a 22-point lead with 4:33 left in the second quarter.

The Huskies shot 10 for 12 (83.3 percent) in the third quarter and then outscored the Bobcats, 22-9, in the fourth.

Lehman, who was named first team all-MAC earlier in the week, finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. NIU senior forward Cassidy Glenn had five points and

eight rebounds and came up with the game-winning layup with 34 seconds remaining – the only time the Huskies had the lead the entire game.

“We just chipped away and made a couple shots, got a couple rebounds, they missed a couple shots and then all of a sudden, you look up and it’s a one-possession game with a couple minutes to go and you have a chance,” Carlsen said.

NIU sophomore Mikayla Voigt scored a game-high 19 points, and sophomore Courtney Woods and junior Renee Sladek each added 12 points in the win.

The Bobcats were led by Quiera Lampkins, who had a team-high 17 points. Ohio senior post Jasmine Weatherspoon, who was the MAC Defensive Player of the Year, finished with five blocks.

The Huskies (20-10) won their 20th game for the first time since the 1993-94 campaign and are playing in the MAC semifinals for the first time since 2007.

Rutgers 66, Ohio State 57: At Washington, Nigel Johnson scored 21 points and made all eight free throws to lead Rutgers to a win over Ohio State in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Rutgers (15-17) now has won back-toback games after a six-game skid. Now in its third season in the Big Ten, it’s the first time the Scarlet Knights have won consecutive conference games.

Despite shooting 37.1 percent – and 30.4 from 3-point range and going about 3½ minutes without a point in the second half – 14th-seeded Rutgers also won its first Big Ten Tournament game after being bounced as the No. 14 seed the past two tries.

This is the third in a series of position previews on the Cubs. sorting out things. Injuries, a hot streak or a cold streak can force the issue one way or the other.

Both Baez and Zobrist have one thing in common: versatility.

According to FanGraphs, Baez had 16 defensive runs saved among all five positions he played last year.

Zobrist played in 119 games at second base, 27 in left field, 24 in right field and one each at first base and shortstop.

Most players would love to settle at one position, but Zobrist has carved out a long career by being willing and able to play multiple positions. Maddon even has advocated for an all-star spot and Gold Glove award for “super-utility” players.

“I think you just do it out of necessity, like Javy last year at the beginning of the year,” Zobrist said in the early days of spring training. “He really didn’t have a choice. It was like they told him, ‘You’re going to be moving around quite a bit this year.’

“You can choose to take a good attitude like he did and make the best of it.

And look what happened by the end of the year, how well he was playing and how important he was for us to win the World Series. That’s what happened for me in my career. It was like, ‘You want at-bats, you’re going to have to move around.’ And I did. You do it out of necessity and then you realize after the fact how valuable it makes you as an individual.”

Zobrist put up a line of .272/.386/.446 with 18 home runs and 76 RBIs. His 10th-inning RBI double in Game 7 of the World Series scored the decisive run in giving the Cubs their first World Series title since 1908.

Baez, who possesses prodigious power potential, produced a line of

.273/.314/.423 with 14 home runs and 59 RBIs. Equally impressive, his strikeout rate has gone from 41.5 percent in 2014 to 30 percent in 2015 to 24 percent last year. He is still susceptible to breaking balls out of the strike zone, but the Cubs are banking that his plate discipline will improve with time.

Konerko reminisces, voices support of rebuild during visit

sgreenberg@suntimes.com GLENDALE, Ariz. – Paul Konerko turned 41 Monday. Two days later, he visited the White Sox spring training complex at Camelback Ranch and did what people of a certain age tend to do: talk about old times.

Poking around a team as young as these Sox might’ve had something to do with it, too, as the veteran of 16 seasons on the South Side recalled what it was like to form a young core with Magglio Ordóñez, Carlos Lee and oth-

ers after he arrived in 1999.

“That was a fun year,” he said. “We had guys who would go out together, guys would have dinner together, because you’re all just young. It was like a college team in a lot of ways, and that’s good.”

In case it matters to anyone, let it be known that a man whose No. 14 was retired by the team in 2015 is on board with the rebuilding plan that’s only just beginning to take shape here. The 2017 Sox don’t appear to be as far along as that 1999 team was – a division title came a year later – but these things ar-

en’t always meant to go fast.

The key to it all is for the best of the young Sox to come together in the most authentic way possible – learning on the job side-by-side, the hard way – and form something lasting.

“As they keep getting better and better, there will be things pulling them away from keeping together,” Konerko said. “The money guys are making, guys getting married and having kids, all that kind of stuff. You start to spread out. Hopefully, the idea is you build that core and they show up each day for each other because they’re

built that way, and the wins are just a byproduct.”

Konerko is living the dad’s life these days, his three children skittering about. There’s getting ready for school, homework and whatever else guys forever stuck on 439 home runs do. He says he’s in the best shape of his life, lighter than he was as a player, and he looks it. Maybe the Sox could use him, but that’s not in the cards.

New team leaders must emerge.

When Cubs manager Joe Maddon makes out his daily lineup card, he has these options at second base: n The reigning World Series MVP and starter in the All-Star Game, a veteran with back-to-back world championships to his credit. n The co-MVP of the National League championship series, a rising young star whose sleight-of-hand glove work has even veterans wondering, “How was that possible?”

Ben Zobrist is the veteran. Javier Baez is the upstart. They present Maddon with a nice problem, but they also present him with a challenge to find them enough playing time.

“I’m pretty sure we’re going to rotate a lot,” said Baez, who saw action at second base, first base, third base, shortstop and left field in 2016. “Wherever they put me, I’m just going to try to do my best.”

Maddon’s strength has been working all of his moving parts into the lineup, sometimes at multiple positions during any one game. He’ll have interesting options with the 35-year-old Zobrist and the 24-year-old Baez.

“We have to balance a lot of different things,” Maddon said. “(Baez) is going to play some second, of course, and so is Zo. Zo’s going to be out there primarily and then we’ll work Javy in there, but Zo could also do what he’s done in the past: play some outfield.

“Javy was so significant to the conclusion of last season. He’s going to be very significant this year and years to come.”

CLEVELAND – Akron’s Keith Dambrot and Zips center Isaiah Johnson are the Mid-American Conference’s coach and player of the year.

Dambrot led Akron to a 24-7 record in

the regular season and the top seed in this week’s conference tournament. Dambrot notched his 400th career win this season.

Johnson averaged 16.2 points and made 63 percent of his shots while leading the Zips to consecutive MAC East titles.

Butler often has stepped up in Wade’s absence, but hasn’t quite been the force he’s been recently and put the blame on himself for the recent late failures.

“I mean, the ball’s in my hand late,” he said. “I’ve got to start making shots, finishing – all that stuff that I’m supposed to do. I’ve got to be better. I will be better. There’s nothing else to say about it.”

Now it’s up to the Bulls to find a way to snap out of it. Wade can’t come back soon enough, but this team likely will need more than that.

“Mental toughness. Got to find a way,” said guard Rajon Rondo, who had eight points and six assists off the bench. “Got to come in with the right mindset. We can’t pick and choose when we want to turn it on and off. We’ve just got to have a better mental focus.”

ORLANDO, Fla. – A fragile, mercurial, consistently inconsistent Bulls team in dire need of development and chemistry is suffering growing pains of the worst kind – now it’s mental.

For the third time in five days and the fourth time in the last 10, the Bulls, playing without injured guard Dwyane Wade, lost in the most frustrating of ways again: they took a double-digit lead in the first half before faltering in the third quarter and all but collapsing in the fourth in a 98-91 loss to the Orlando Magic on Wednesday night at Amway Center.

‘Hairspray’ brings story of acceptance to DeKalb

uring a time of segregation and discrimination, the musical “Hairspray,” set in Baltimore in the early 1960s, tells a story about breaking down social barriers and accepting people for who they are. DeKalb’s Stage Coach Players will present that story starting today.

The show, directed by Jan Kuntz, focuses on a plus-size teen girl’s determination to fulfill her dream of dancing on a live television show. The production opens today at 7:30 p.m., with performances this weekend at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The show continues next weekend.

In the story, Tracy Turnblad, played by Sycamore High School senior Riley Powers, wants to dance on the Corny Collins show, but has been overlooked because of her size. During her quest to appear on the show, she befriends African-American students, who are allowed only to dance on the show on “Negro Day,” and learns many lessons about segregation and acceptance along the way.

Tickets on sale for Kishwaukee Kiwanis Talent Show DAILY CHRONICLE

The Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club of DeKalb will host its first community talent show at 7:30 p.m. April 1 at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St. in DeKalb.

Lisa Small, the club’s treasurer, said the idea for the talent show came from the success of a similar event hosted by Kiwanis Club in Joliet.

“We hope to make the talent show an annual event with a lot of community participation,” Small said.

“We want to host an entertaining evening for our audience and a fun event for the community.”

Some of the musical acts in the show include Upper Octave, a brass band made up of seven DeKalb High School band students; the Webster Family, who sing in four-part harmony; the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Adult/Youth and Children’s choirs; pianist Hannah Buckle; soprano Lorraine Langer; and singer/songwriter Ben Kohli.

Reserved seat tickets for the show cost $10 to $15 and are available through the theater box office, www. egyptiantheatre.org, and from any Kishwaukee Kiwanis member. Children younger than 10 will be admitted free.

Before the event, there will be a meal at Faranda’s Banquet Center, 302 Grove St. in DeKalb. Gold Circle tickets for the dinner and show cost $75.

All proceeds from the talent show will be used to support the Kishwaukee Kiwanis Club’s projects and children’s programs in the community.

Taking place every two years, CSA Performathon is the major fundraising event of the NIU Community School of the Arts. The funds raised support CSA scholarship programs, which help enable families unable to afford the full cost of arts education to enroll children in music lessons, music ensembles or classes in music, art or theater.

Performathon is scheduled for Saturday, April 22, in the Boutell Concert Hall and lobby of the NIU Music Building. In addition to the

Chicago singer/songwriter and Northern Illinois University alumnus Dave Anians, also known as Davey Dynamite, recently released his fourth full-length album through Brooklyn-based label Dying Scene Records.

Dear Reader: We’re verging into legal territory with this question, but as medicine continues to advance in its ability to prolong life, this is an important topic for each of us.

A living will refers to a class of legal document that an individual uses to specify his or her wishes for end-of-life medical care. These documents are also referred to as health care advance directives, or simply advance directives.

The idea of a living will comes up most often among the elderly, but in fact, people of all ages can use this document to state what they do and do not want to be done in the instance of a medical emergency. If the time comes that a person is unable to make medical decisions on his own behalf, then the living will speaks for him.

While your dad is correct that you or your siblings can communicate his wishes to his care team, this can place a significant burden on the family. Despite knowing a loved one’s wishes, making decisions with life-or-death consequences is not only a challenge, but can also be emotionally wrenching.

A living will often includes a health care proxy or power of attorney. This allows you to name the person who will communicate your wishes if you should become unable to do so yourself. It’s understandably easy for family members to become overwhelmed in the midst of a medical crisis, and to agree to medical procedures or lifesaving measures that the patient would not have wanted.

What can this type of legal document address?

Everything from a person’s wishes regarding resuscitation procedures, ventilation techniques and diagnostic tests, to life-prolonging treatments such as CPR, dialysis, blood transfusion, the administration of food, water or drugs, palliative care and surgery. Some people use their living wills to state their wishes regarding dying at home, donating their organs for transplantation or offering their bodies to science.

Individuals who decide to create a living will often begin by speaking with their families about the scope and specifics of the document they want to create. It’s also common to consult with your physician, who can help to explain the choices you have and the decisions you are making.

A living will must be in writing and adhere to the legal requirements of the state in which it is being used. A lawyer can help you to create your living will, but it is not a requirement. Both the American Bar Association and the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization offer links to state-specific forms.

am a father of two girls. Both of them no longer see, talk to or contact me. I’m divorced from their mother. She cheated on me after she went back to work and met a man she decided was her soul mate. That was 17 years ago. I haven’t talked to or seen my ex in all those years, and slowly both daughters distanced themselves from me until there was no relationship at all. On Father’s Day, my birthday or Christmas I never hear a word from either one. I tried numerous times to be a father to them. My youngest was recently married and didn’t invite me to her big wedding. I had been saving money over the years in case one of them needed help with a home or wedding.

I have to say I am hurt. What could I have done to be a father when they didn’t want me in their lives? I talk to people and they keep telling me stories similar to mine. Is this common? –

Bridge players who do not understand their partner’s bids are in trouble. This week, we are looking at the splinter bid, which shows a good fit for partner’s suit, at least game-going values and a singleton (or void) in the suit just named.

Once, my partner opened one club. I had 15 high-card points with six clubs to the ace-king-queen-jack.

I also had a singleton spade, so I responded three spades. It went all pass! Then partner put a singleton spade down in the dummy! I tried hard to make it, but I unluckily ran out of trumps. Six clubs was cold.

In today’s deal, North’s four diamonds was a splinter bid. Then South used 14-30 Roman Key Card Blackwood, understandably believing that his partner had something in clubs to justify his game-force. When North showed one key card (an ace or the spade king), South jumped to six spades.

West, who disliked leading from a jack, chose the club seven. After winning with dummy’s king, how did declarer play?

South saw that the danger was a 3-0 trump split. So, he called for the spade four and underplayed East’s three with his two! When dummy’s four held the trick, declarer drew one more round of trumps and discarded his club loser on dummy’s heart queen.

Note that if West could have taken the second trick, trumps would have been 2-1 and the contract safe -- sort of. Tune in again tomorrow.
