No arrests reported after gunfire breaks out By BRITTANY KEEPERMAN bkeeperman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Two men were taken to Kishwaukee Hospital after they were shot at an apartment building at 901 Regent Drive about 3:15 a.m. Sunday, police said. DeKalb police Cmdr. Robert Redel said 40 to 60 people, most of them Kishwaukee College and Northern Illinois University students, were at a party in the building when a fight broke out between two groups. There was evidence alcohol was involved but no drugs were found at the scene. “There was some pushing and shoving,” Redel said. “As people left, one of the guys pulled out a gun and started shooting.” The man fired more than four shots; police haven’t located the gun or the suspect, Redel said. Police believe the shooter was a visitor at the apartment building, but his connection to those who threw the party still is under investigation, Redel said Sunday afternoon. Redel said the shooter most likely fled before police arrived. “We didn’t see them once we got there,” he said. “There’s a front and back door, and we didn’t get a direction of travel. Obviously, when something like this happens, it becomes chaos and people are trying to get out, looking out for their own lives.” The shooter was a man,
SYCAMORE – Sycamore School District 427 is beginning the school year with a $2.3 million deficit and will be reducing its budget by $1.1 million this fiscal year. The total operating budget for fiscal 2016 is $53.8 million, and the district has fund balance reserves of about $10.2 million, district Chief Financial Officer Nicole Stuckert said. Previously, the plan was to balance the budget over three years by cutting spending by $1.6 million this school year, $1.5 million next school year and $700,000 in the third year. “Some things came up over the summer that we need to address that got in the way of that $1.6 million,” Superintendent Kathy Countryman said. “We feel pretty good about that $1.1 million moving toward a balanced budget.” One of the biggest expenditures the district added was increasing the local contribution to the state teachers’ pension fund, the Teachers Retirement System.
“We will budget for a half-percent increase toward the retirement fund for the next 16 years,” Stuckert said, adding that each half-percent increase equals about $10,000 from the district. Another unforeseen expenditure: Kindergarten enKathy rollment across Countryman t h e d i s t r i c t increased by 14 students, and as a result, a new kindergarten teacher was hired and a new class was added, Countryman said. “Last year our kindergarten numbers were 259 at this point in time,” Countryman said. “This year, we’re at 273, so we needed to add another section.” A state-mandated health, life and safety audit conducted in the district every 10 years also concluded that there were findings that needed to be addressed “right away,” and were added to the budget, Stuckert said.
