CONTROVERSY IN GENOA

A neighborhood watches

Says he had no ‘malicious agenda’ By JILLIAN DUCHNOWSKI jduchnowski@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The man behind the widely viewed video of a police officer losing his temper at a police safety checkpoint last weekend is 27-year-old DeKalb resident Ryan S. Taylor. Taylor, of the 800 block of West Hillcrest Drive, declined to be interviewed by the Daily Chronicle, but court records show he has had a few run-ins with DeKalb police in the past two years. Prosecutors recently tried to revoke his court Ryan S. supervision in a 2012 Taylor drunken driving case, and he since has been Online charged with unlawful use of a credit card To watch and domestic battery, the video of court records show. the checkTaylor posted a video of his encoun- point stop, ter with two Illinois visit DailyState troopers as he Chronicle. drove through a po- com. lice checkpoint set up Saturday night into Sunday morning in DeKalb. The video spread like wildfire once it was posted online Sunday. It was posted to Reddit, embedded in numerous websites, and viewed on YouTube more than 120,000 times through Monday. It prompted DeKalb police to clarify on their Facebook page that their officers were not depicted in the video; DeKalb City Attorney Dean Frieders repeated that clarification at Monday’s City Council meeting. Taylor was a guest Wednesday morning on a Springfield talk radio show appearing as “Ryan Scott,” and by Wednesday afternoon, the number of YouTube views surpassed 540,000.

Genoa Elementary students who live in the Oak Creek subdivision in Genoa step off the bus Wednesday at the stop on the southeast corner of the intersection of Walnut Street and South Oak Creek Drive. A sign was recently installed below the stop sign at Walnut Street and North Oak Creek Drive denoting a bus stop. The sign is within 100 feet of sex offender Alan Luke’s residence on North Oak Creek Drive. Parents on alert after sex offender moves near school bus stop Voice your opinion

By ANDREA AZZO aazzo@shawmedia.com GENOA – Some Genoa parents are concerned after the school district decided to keep a bus stop near where a sex offender lives, while also offering a new stop about a block away. Justin Northrup was waiting Wednesday for his daughter, a fourth-grader at Genoa Elementary School, at the original bus stop. He said knowing a sex offender lives within 100 feet of the bus stop gives him that much more reason to be there. “You’re just kind of extra ... you just want to be careful,” he said.

Luke, 42, of the 900 block of Oak Creek Drive, is a registered sex offender who moved in August to within 100 feet of the bus stop at South Oak Creek Drive and Walnut Street, which has been a School District 424 bus stop for at least five years, officials said.
