$1M bond set for robbery suspects By KATIE SMITH ksmith@shawmedia.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb County judge set bond at $1 million apiece Thursday for three men accused of armed robbery after they allegedly held up a DeKalb cellphone store at gunpoint Wednesday. K’ron D. Price, 26, of the 3900 block of West 178th Place, Country Club Hills; Paul Grissom, 22, of 7600 block of

Rhodes Avenue, Chicago; and Tyren L. Windell, 26, of the 500 block of East 94th Street, Chicago, each are charged with armed robbery in connection with an incident at a T-Mobile store in the Oakland Place shopping plaza Wednesday. If convicted, they could each face six to 30 years in prison. In order to be released from the DeKalb County Jail, they must post $100,000 bail

court Thursday. Pilmer, however, kept Windell’s bond at $1 million for the time being. Tyren L. Police said Windell they are fairly certain the three men are the only ones who went in to hold up the store. However, DeKalb Dep-

s the prep football season kicks off tonight, most of DeKalb County’s teams will have to wait another week to play at home. DeKalb, Sycamore, Genoa-Kingston and Hiawatha all start the 2015 season on the road, although Kaneland is home against Chicago Brooks. The Barbs begin Year 3 under coach Matt Weckler, who has led the team on playoff runs in his first two years with the team. But they lost Dre Brown, a big force on offense who

signed to play college ball at Illinois. They head down to Plainfield North for their opener. The Spartans will begin their 2015 campaign for their seventh-straight playoff berth at Lincoln-Way West. Hall of Famer Bill McCarty is back to coaching the Cogs varsity team after five years coaching the sophomore team when the team kickoffs in Mendota. Hiawatha was one win away from a playoff berth last year, but lost a lot of talent. The Hawks continue their

hunt for an elusive postseason berth – they haven’t been to the playoffs since 1987 – in Ottawa tonight against Marquette Academy. Previews of the games are in the sports section. The “Magic is Everywhere” football preview section, also is in today’s paper, looks at each team’s season with a breakdown on each, as well as rosters and photos.

DeKALB – District 428’s 12 schools experienced a technology blackout that extended into the school day Thursday. Learning wasn’t disrupted this time, but officials now will develop a backup plan for the future. S u p e r i n t e n d e n t D o u glas Moeller said the Cisco network system went down Wednesday night, rendering the district’s phones, computers and radios useless. Some schools, such as Hunt- Douglas l e y M i d d l e Moeller School, had sporadic connectivity. Moeller said the cause of the problem was unclear. Busing and the school day went on as planned Thursday. The district has implemented Phase 1 of its one-toone technology plan that put about 3,300 Chromebooks in the hands of the district’s third through ninth graders. Phase 1 of the three-year plan cost the district $1.1 million this fiscal year. “Fortunately, it’s only the second day of school,” Moeller said. “They are doing more training at this point. A big part of this is [the students] have to learn to use the device. … The training will continue, they just can’t go live and go out and do searches. Six months down the line, this would have impacted instructional delivery.”
