Taking advantage of age-related discounts can help improve your financial health, that is, if you’re not afraid to ask. For seniors who have been out of the workforce for 10 or 20 years, senior discounts have become almost a necessity for survival in some cases with the inflated cost of goods over the years. “I have seen people living on $700 a month,” said Jaelyn Dobbs, family care giver specialist at Connections Area XIV Agency on Aging. “How does one live on $700 a month? That is just incredible to me.”

While few businesses in Creston offer discounts for seniors, some businesses do not advertise them, and some may not kick in until you turn 55, 60, 62 or 65. According to Dyann Bowers, executive director at Area XIV Agency on Aging, the increased cost of living — including food, shelter, medication and fuel — make discounts for seniors more important than ever. Locally, the following businesses offer discounts for seniors. • Strand Theatre, 309 W. Adams St. — Admission for seniors is $5 for 2-D movies and $7 for 3-D movies.
