RAGBRAI Q&A

Teaming up to make a successful ride Boone man helps Virginia woman enjoy RAGBRAI ■

Bonnie O’Day had plans to make her maiden voyage on RAGBRAI this year. Several days before though, her trip was in jeopardy. As a visually impaired person, she rides with a captain. The visually able person rides in front on a tandem bicycle. The two work together to make the ride a success. That’s where Jim Pratt of Boone came in. He heard about O’Day’s plight and stepped up. The two rode into Creston together on day two of their week-long adventure. O’Day and her husband are big into cycling in their home in Alexandria, Virginia. But they ride in a way that most people would not think of. They’ve organized a tandem bike group where a visually impaired person rides on the back of the two-seat, twowheeled machine. A captain leads in front. “We can’t ride a bike without a captain,” O’Day said. “We ride a tandem.”

Bonnie O’Day, left, of Alexandria, Va., and Jim Pratt of Boone team up to ride RAGBRAI this year. O’Day is visually impaired, so Pratt took on the role of captain on their tandem bicycle.

They heard about RAGBRAI through their captains in Virginia. It inspired O’Day to want to be part of an Iowa tradition. She found out about the Adaptive Sports Iowa Cycling team. They joined up with it, along with approximately 40 other people who are disabled, but are riding RAGBRAI this week. “We decided to give it a go,” O’Day said.

She had a captain all lined up for this years ride. However, the captain could not ride due to a health issue. O’Day contacted Adaptive Sports Iowa. The group posted the message on social media. Pratt was on Facebook. Through a friend, he read about O’Day’s dilemma. It inspired the veteran of nearly 20 RAGBRAIs to do something.

“I was looking at Facebook after I got done with work,” Pratt said. “One of my friends who’s involved in the cycling community posted something that somebody wants to do RAGBRAI. They can’t see well enough to ride by themselves.” Pratt decided to sign up. Monday, he and O’Day were in Creston. TEAM | 2A
