Former Creston High School teacher and avid craftsman, Dennis Kuyper, has adopted a favorite pastime of his late wife, Barb, as his own by continuing several of her sewing and quilting projects. “It’s sentimental and also rewarding at the same time,” Dennis said of the hobby that has become an important part of his leisure time since his wife’s passing in late December 2014. “I’m trying to go through and just sort of finish the projects Barb had started but didn’t get the chance to finish.” The results of these projects are lasting works of art, but really, it is the process of completing them that is most rewarding for Dennis. “It gives me something to do, lets me be creative and, down the road, when my time comes, they can be passed on from generation to generation,” Dennis said.
For years, Barb sharpened her skills as a seamstress both at the Kuyper family home and also with a group of local friends known as the Queen Bees, who meet regularly to sew and socialize at the Quilts and Other Notions Creative Center in uptown Creston. According to Queen Bees Founding Member Katy Hayes, “Barb was very creative. She could just make something without a pattern, and it would turn out great.” Hayes said, “I think she came for the companionship. That’s the way I think we all feel. Whether we get something done or not is not really necessary. We just like to be together.” Barb’s genuine love of the craft is one of the driving forces behind Dennis’ ambition to pursue the endeavor himself. “I guess I know it was relaxing for Barb and she enjoyed it,” Dennis said. “It’s the same thing for me right now; it’s relaxing and I’m
The 4K for Cancer team, running its way from San Francisco to Baltimore, stopped in Creston Wednesday for an overnight stay. 4K for Cancer is a fundraising effort for the Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults, based out of Baltimore. “Each year the 4K brings in nearly $1 million for the Ulman Cancer Fund, so it’s one of their biggest fundraisers,” said Kati Peditto, co-director for Team Baltimore. “It’s directed toward supporting young adults with cancer. We’re in the process of opening a young adult support house in Baltimore for people who are traveling for treatment and need a place to stay.” The 4K for Cancer is a relay across the United States, with each team member running 2 miles at a time. Team members run anywhere from 6 to 20 miles per day. The team left Omaha, Ne-
braska, Wednesday morning and arrived in Creston Wednesday afternoon. “This is day 25 of our trip across the country,” Peditto said. “On Aug. 6, we’ll make it into Baltimore. We’re about halfway through, as of today.” Emma Horgan, co-director of Team Baltimore, said team members are from all over the country. Team members range in age from 18 to 25. Some members have graduated from college already, while most are still in college. “We have some pretty elite runners on our team, runners in college (who have) qualified for the Boston Marathon,” Horgan said. “There are people like me, I played field hockey in college, but I’m not a distance runner. So, that’s been an adjustment. And then, there are people who have never really run before, and this is really a huge challenge for them physically.” Each team member had to 4K | 5A

enjoying doing it. It gives me something to do in the evenings because evenings are the tough time. Plus, then you’re rewarded because you’ve got something to show for your time.” Before her passing, Dennis recalls great lengths of time spent observing his late wife toiling away at her sewing machine and enjoying relaxed conversation with
her. “She’s the one who led the way and showed me without even knowing,” Dennis said. “In a way, as I watched and we conversed as she would sew, she inspired me to take up sewing. I also figured, she’s got anything and everything a quilter or sewer needs, so I might as well give it a try.” QUILT | 2A
