The Creston Municipal Airport will receive another update this fall with the replacement of its approach lighting system. Joe Roenfeldt, design engineer for Clapsaddle-Garber Associates, Inc., said of the project, “This is to replace the lights that shine off of the airport that tell the pilots how to come to the airport and how to safely get there. We will be replacing equipment that is outdated and old with new equipment.” City Council members voted unanimously for Clapsaddle-Garber to move forward with a final grant application to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to receive funding for the project. Clapsaddle-Garber (CGA) is a civil engineering and land surveying firm based in Marshalltown that has been working for nearly a year to facilitate a grant from the FAA that will contribute 90 percent of the funding for the nearly $140,000 project. “We’re getting close to the final steps,” City Administrator Mike Taylor s a i d . “ T h i s has been in our plans for years. It Taylor just takes time to go through all the paperwork.” The project, which is slated to commence in early fall, will update the approach lighting at the airport that is crucial to the

approach and landing of incoming pilots. The current visual approach slope indicator (VASI) lighting will be replaced with a precision approach path indicator (PAPI) system, comprised of more visible and efficient LED lights as well as runway end identifier lights (REIL) . According to an FAA report, “the VASI system is no longer installed by the FAA as a new facility. “The equipment out there is ancient. One of the equipment types out there, which is the VASI, they don’t even make parts for anymore. It’s an antiquated piece of equipment,” Roenfeldt said. “PAPI primarily assists by providing visual glide slope guidance in non-precision approach environments. These systems have an effective visual range of at least three miles during the day and up to 20 miles at night,” according to the FAA report. “The benefit of the comparison (be-

tween VASI and PAPI) is to see and understand the superior clarity of LED light systems over the more traditional incandescent systems.” CGA has also been instrumental in selecting Voltmer Inc., an electrical and utility contracting firm out of Decorah, to perform the actual installation of the new approach lighting system. “Creston has a long history of keeping their airport up to good, modern standards and Clappsaddle-Garber has been a good part of that,” former Creston Mayor Warren Woods said. “This is just another step in making sure that it’s current with all FAA regulations.” In other Creston City Council news: • The council approved a resolution to award contract to Herberger Constrution Co., Inc., for the Adams Street bridge over Lake McKinley project for $1,469,169.67.

The Learning Center of Southwest Iowa (TLC) is partnering with Courage League Sports of Urbandale to bring a new event to the Creston area. TLC provides reading and math interventions for children who have proven learning gaps or special needs. Courage League Sports is a nonprofit adaptive sports and recreational facility that offers year-round programming for children and adults who aren’t able to go full speed because of a physical, cognitive or emotional disability. Together, the two nonprofit organizations will host Adaptive Sports Day in the Creston Middle School gymnasium Saturday, June 18. “Courage League was looking for satellite areas to bring their programs. We said, ‘Absolutely!’” said Kathy Ralston, family enrichment coordinator for TLC. The Adaptive Sports Day will engage participants and their family members in athletic events. Three sessions are being offered, with a session for ages 2-6 from 9-10 a.m., ages 7-17 from 10:30 a.m.-noon and a session for 18-and-older from 12:30-2 p.m. The cost is $2 per person or $5 per family and will be paid the day of the event. “I would say really you need to come out and try this and understand we’ll adapt to any ability,” Courage League Sports Founder Melissa Clarke-Wharff said. “I think some folks think if they have a more severe and profound child with their disability that it’s not for them. But it really is because of the adaptations we do to make sure everybody is participating and having a good time. We will adapt to any ability level, whether it’s a physical, emotional or cogni-

Ralston said she is excited for southwest Iowa to have an event like this coming to the area. “I think it’s a great opportunity for families to take advantage of,” Ralston said. “I hope they will so we can show Courage League Sports and other resources from out of town that we have a population here that is really wanting these programs to visit.” Ralston also iterated the event is for the whole family and encourages those thinking about attending to sign up. “As a mother of a child who has special needs and working with a lot of other parents in that same situation, one thing that seems to transcend the special need is social functions become a difficulty for the entire family,” she said. “Having opportunities within your community where you can go as a family and take your child or family member and know it is going to be welcoming, no judgments, that it’s set up with individuals trained to work with individuals who have disabilities, I just would like to encourage everyone to take this opportunity and not feel scared or hesitant. Give yourselves, give your child this opportunity.” Adaptive Sports Day can serve as a networking event for individuals and families. Clarke-Wharff said the TLC | 2A
