As part of RAGBRAI’s route inspection pre-ride, the RAGBRAI Ride Right team rode the route from Shenandoah to Creston on Monday and departed this morning on its way to Leon. According to RAGBRAI Director T.J. Juskiewicz, about 35 cyclists made the trek from Shenandoah to Creston, as the team rides the entire RAGBRAI route. “We’ve got about 35 riders that are going out, looking at the routes, checking out road conditions, traffic conditions and putting together a report,” Juskiewicz
said. “We’re also meeting with the RAGBRAI committees, so the overnight towns and pass-through towns and just looking at their game plans 50 days out. It looks like most of the towns are going to be ready come July.” The day-long journey from Shenandoah to Creston is both the longes,t at about 76 miles, and the steepest climb of any of the legs on the 2016 RAGBRAI route. Monday’s ride from Shenandoah to Creston wasn’t overly tough because of the length or the hills, however. Cyclists were left drained because of the strong wind.
“There’s a lot of hills out there, no doubt. Wind can be a definite challenge,” Juskiewicz said. “No matter what, we know how many hills there are out there and all that. But it’s hard to train for headwinds. Yesterday, we had some strong winds out of the north that slowed us down a little bit. But everyone made it. We have all shapes and sizes out here. If you train for RAGBRAI, you can make it.” The Creston RAGBRAI Committee greeted the cyclists with a picnic at McKinley Park Monday evening and gave the cyclists a glimpse of what life in Creston is like. Having the cyclists in
town also gave Creston residents a small reminder that RAGBRAI is nearing. “I kind of loved the comment from Terry Freeman on Facebook,” Ellen Gerharz said. “He must have seen some of the riders coming into town yesterday. He said, ‘Seeing them come in as a group made it real that it really is going to happen.’ Even though 30 bikes are a drop in the bucket compared to what it’s going to be like on July 25, but here are bicyclists in town.” The RAGBRAI Ride Right crew gave the Creston RAGBRAI Committee a favorable report after Monday’s ride. Creston High School students, namely incoming seniors, will have college-readiness tools at their fingertips thanks to updates to the school’s webpage. While the high school already provided such tools for students, they are now more easily accessible, with several links added to the website with information on high school graduation requirements, ACT preparation, college scholarships and more. On Friday, high school counselor Angie Bolinger said the additions to the website are now live. To view new graduationand college-readiness links added by Bolinger and high school counselor Tammy Riley, visit crestonschools. org, click “schools,” then “high school” and then “guidance,” which is located under “quick links” on the lefthand side of the page. “It’s got a lot of information for students and parents regarding everything from ACT prep to scholarships and deadlines,” said Bill Messerole, Creston High School principal. Messerole “It’s the one place to go for a lot of the information you need.” Bolinger said the scholarships link will be updated

throughout the school year for students’ and parents’ convenience. For all students, there are links to high school graduation requirements, a course catalog and activity calendar. For juniors and seniors especially, there is information about financial aid, ACT test dates and websites students can visit to do test prep. “There’s information for post-secondary planning, four-year planning, transfer planning guides and information for our athletes for NCAA and NAIA eligibility,” Bolinger s a i d . “There’s also a link for different Union County resources, Bolinger so that can be anything from churches to food banks to therapists to whatever other resources.” The main reason for these updates is so all Creston High School students and their families have access to the same information, Bolinger said. “We’re one-to-one, so all of our students have a device.
