Broadway advantage Tony Award-winning actress Kelli James, formerly of Tabor, will offer a musical theatre camp July 18-30 in Red Oak. Registration deadline is July 1. ■

RED OAK – Tony Award-winning actress Kelli James knows firsthand the journey of rising from a rural location to performing internationally on Broadway. A native of Tabor, James’ career in professional musical theatre began at age 16 with a role in “The Rocky Horror Show” in San Francisco. Now, she’s been in
theatre for 40 years and is owner and director of Broadway Advantage, a studio in Phoenix. With a desire to give back to youth in southwest Iowa and show them the ropes in becoming successful in the performing arts, James is offering an intensive musical theatre camp – including a showcase at the end – July 18-30 at the Wilson Performing Arts Center, in Red Oak. “I thought, ‘Where can kids who are in small towns in Iowa get that kind of exposure or that kind of study if they’re not in New York or LA?’” James said. “I decided I need to come back to Iowa and give these kids the information they need if any of them are interested in going into the theatre, music, musical theatre, television film or concert touring – whatever they want to do – and give them the
advantage the other kids in big cities around the country have.” James said she first and foremost teaches youth to discover their voice type and acting type. “You have to define yourself in this business, almost like you are the product,” James said. “If you want to be an actor or a singer, you need to know what your strengths are. If you want to become an actor, it’s really important to start to understand the materials you need to use at auditions.” Some of the skills she will teach during the camp are audition preparation, how to sell yourself to the people who can hire you, building your voice as a singer, finding the right songs and roles for you and how to make the most of your voice and your presentation. A train fatality involving an Osceola teen occurred Monday. Jeffrey Shear Jr., 15, stepped in front of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train at Osceola’s train depot in the center of town. Law enforcement received a call about the incident at 12:18 p.m. Osceola Police Department, Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, Osceola Fire Department and ambulance responded to the accident. There has been speculation the incident was a suicide. “I’ve not ruled it that way yet, but that’s certainly a possibility. I’m going to wait and hear what the state (medical examiner) has to say,” said Osceola Police Chief Marty Duffus. Shear’s autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.
the train depot was closed or on “lock down” during those afternoon hours for the investigation. The incident is currently under investigation by the police department and Iowa State Patrol. Duffus said it appears Shear walked in front of the BNSF train. There were also items left at the scene that law enforcement gathered for the investigation.
Grief counseling
Shear was a student at Clarke Community School District. Grief counseling was made available at Clarke Community Middle School Monday evening and today from 9 a.m. until noon. Duffus said he wanted to commend the school district for being proactive with the situation for students and adults. “Even as early as Monday night when they started offering counseling, there were several people taking advantage of it. I was glad to see that,” he said. ‘Lock down’ According to Duffus, Law enforcement was on these type of train fatalities the scene until approximate- don’t happen in Osceola as ly 4:30 p.m. Monday.
