Creston Half Little Texas, Keith Anderson to perform for Marathon Party in the Park Saturday sees changes for 2016 By SCOTT VICKER

CNA managing editor svicker@crestonnews.com

The Creston Half Marathon will have a new look when runners toe the starting line on July 3. One of the biggest changes runners will notice this year is the start time. After two years of being an evening event, this year’s half marathon (13.1 miles) starts at 7:30 a.m., with the 5K (3.1 miles) starting at 8:30 a.m. “That was always my plan,” Creston Half Marathon Race Organizer Mindy Stalker said about changing to a morning start time. “The first two years were planned as evening events because they Stalker were on a Friday and Saturday. It’s pretty rare to find a half marathon in the evening. I think Creston and Las Vegas are the two evening half marathons.” One of the advantages of switching to a morning start time, Stalker hopes, is that temperatures will be cooler for the runners. Another big change this year is the race route. In the past, the half marathon and 5K have both started and finished in uptown Creston. That will no longer be the case. This year’s half marathon will start at Green Valley State Park and end at McKinley Park, while the 5K will start and finish at McKinley Park.

“We’ve always included an uptown start and finish, but as the trails have expanded, I wanted to use more of the trails in the race, since it’s a fundraiser for the trails,” Stalker said. Transportation will be provided to runners. Starting around 6:45 a.m. at McKinley Park, runners can park at the Creston City Pool and walk up the hill for a shuttle ride to the starting line in Green Valley State Park. The start line for the half marathon will be east of the beach at Green Valley State Park at the boat ramp parking lot. From there, runners will go west toward the campgrounds, running around the exterior of the campgrounds before running back toward the starting line and taking the trail toward town. Runners will deviate from the trail for a lap around the Creston High School track, a loop down Clayton Road and a loop through the James Division horseshoe. The half marathon will include water and Gatorade stops roughly every mile and a GU (liquid carbohydrate) stop at the halfway point. There will be one water stop in the 5K. Participants are encouraged RUN | 2A
