The Union County Fairgrounds fundraising effort received a big boost last week when the Union County Friends of 4-H Inc. announced a pledge of $30,000 toward the “Building on Tradition” project.
“Building on Tradition” is the fundraising campaign launched Feb. 1 to raise $1.5 million for a renovation project on the Union County Fairgrounds in Afton. The renovation project includes a new 110-feet-by240-feet building that will house the sheep and hogs and also have a restroom
facility and show arena. The project also includes a 110-feet-by-160-feet building that will house the cattle. “Friends of 4-H Inc. is pleased to be able to contribute $30,000 and support the renovation effort to this level,” Union County Friends of 4-H Inc. President Barb Wilmeth said
in a press release. “A lot of effort and thought has been put into planning the new buildings, and they will serve our 4-H’ers well during the fair. The buildings’ design and flexibility also means they can be used for 4-H and community activities throughout the FAIR | 2A

WASHINGTON (AP) — Over the strong objections of key conservatives and Democrats, House Republican leaders are forging ahead with a health care plan that scraps major parts of the Obama-era overhaul. The House Ways and Means Committee and the Energy and Commerce Committee intended to convene what were expected to be marathon sessions Wednesday to start voting on the legislation. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence back the plan to repeal Barack Obama’s health
care law, and Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., is confidently predicting it will pass the House. But many fellow Republicans don’t seem to be listening. On Tuesday, less than 24 hours after the GOP health bill came out, a powerful conservative backlash threatened to sink it. “As the bill stands today, it is Obamacare 2.0,” according to a statement by the billionaire Koch Brothers’-backed Americans for Prosperity and FreedomWorks groups. Seeing red: ‘Day Without a Woman’ celebrates female power PHILADELPHIA (AP) — American women are staying home from work, zipping up their wallets, wearing red and attending rallies across the country to show their economic strength and impact on society as part of International Women’s Day celebrations happening across the globe Wednesday. “A Day Without a Woman” is the first major action by organizers of the Women’s March since the
day after President Donald Trump’s inauguration, when millions of women poured into the streets in protest of misogyny, inequality and oppression. The event coincides with the U.N.-designated International Women’s Day. German airline Lufthansa had six all-female crews flying from several cities in the country to Berlin. Sweden’s women’s football team replaced the WOMEN | 2A
