ANVILLE, Ill. — They came from as close as Emerson, Leon, Des Moines and Lincoln, Nebraska; as far away as Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Memphis, Tennessee; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Camden, New Jersey. Together, they sacrificed personal agendas, statistics and individual goals for the greater goal of the team. This group of basketball players was molded by a pair of coaches who demanded excellence from them on both ends of the court every day in practice and in games. What came about was a team Southwestern Community College and Creston will remember forever. that’s hard to find guys that are going to be unselfish, give up of themselves for the betterment of the group and we certainly have that.” What happened Saturday night in this hamlet along
the Illinois and Indiana border with the Spartans is a story that will be retold time and time again for decades to come. “I’m happy because they’re going to be in the
Creston, Southwestern, southwest Iowa — they’re going to go down in history forever and ever,” said Lorensen, who was named the NJCAA Division II National Coach of the Year. “Twenty-five, 30, 40 years from now, people are going to be talking about the 2017 national championship team and how great of a group they were.” The team bought in from day one. “It’s just 15 young men that came together, gave it their all,” said sophomore Jordan Johnson. “It means Johnson everything.” Even though the Spartans may not be large in stature, this team showed what a little grit and determination can do. “Everybody underestimates us because we’re small, we don’t look like much, but we got a lot of heart,” Johnson said. “That goes a long way.” In the process, they were bound and determined to win.
