Grass fire probability GOP still hunting votes high in early spring on brink of House health care vote

Now that winter is over according to the calendar, grass fires are a hot topic across the county.

Since March 12, Creston firefighters responded to eight grass fires, several of which were mutual aid calls to Afton Fire Department jurisdiction.

According to Afton Fire Chief Brett Weis, Afton firefighters have already seen about 30 grass fires this year.

“People light things when they want to burn it, to clean it up, and it just

According to a National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) report issued in November 2013, there are an average of 915 brush, grass and wildland fire calls each day to local fire departments.

More than one-third of those occur in an open area or field.

In Iowa, most grass fires occur in early spring, when people are burning off vegetation. Weis suggested back burning in areas to be burned off, or bringing in additional help.

“Try to back burn so

self,” Weis said. “If you don’t know what you’re doing, there are people you can hire to do it.”

Back burning means starting where the fire will spread to first, then working your way back to the other side to prevent the fire from eating the fuel too quickly. This will also cause a fire break so the fire will stop as it has no more fuel.

Weis also suggested keeping an eye out when there are buildings nearby.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Showdown day at hand, Republicans remained short of votes Thursday for their health care overhaul and were hoping President Donald Trump would close the deal with a bloc of conservatives at a White House meeting that could determine the fate of their showpiece legislation.

Frenzied last-minute wheeling and dealing was under way on Capitol Hill and in the White House, where Trump summoned the balky conservative House Freedom Caucus to meet with him mid-day, ahead of the planned vote. But concessions being offered to the conservatives, who sought to limit requirements for health plans to offer certain benefits including substance abuse and maternity care, appeared to be scaring off moderate Republicans.

“An agreement is needed from my party,” Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, said Thursday during a procedural debate on the House floor.

He said the GOP “intends to bring forth an agreed-to bill

that we will be able to show to the American people, and we will own it.”

In one signal that more work was needed, GOP leaders postponed a planned morning meeting of House GOP lawmakers as all eyes turned toward Trump and the conservative caucus.

Most of the Republican rebels were from that group.

The stakes could hardly be higher for a party that gained monopoly control of Washington largely on promises to get rid of former President Barack Obama’s signature legislative achievement and replace it with something better.

IS group claims responsibility for London car, knife attack LONDON (AP) — The Islamic State group claimed responsibility Thursday for an attack by a man who plowed an SUV into pedestrians on a crowded London bridge and then stabbed a police officer to death on the grounds of Britain’s Parliament.

The attacker was born in Britain and known to authorities who had once investigated him for links to religious extremism, British Prime Minister Theresa May said Thursday in a sweeping speech in which she May also encouraged Britons to go about their lives.

The Islamic State group said through its Aamaq News Agency that the at-

tacker was a soldier of the Islamic State who “carried out the operation in response to calls for targeting citizens of the coalition” of countries fighting IS in Syria and Iraq. In addition to the police officer and the attacker, who was shot by police, two people died on Westminster Bridge and at least 30 others were injured, seven critically.

British officials did not release the attacker’s identity or confirm a link with the Islamic State group, though May did say it would be wrong to describe the attack as “Islamic” extremism.

“It is Islamist terrorism,” she said. “It is a perversion of a great faith.”

They included: 12 Britons, 3 French, 2 Romanians, 4 South Koreans, 1 German, 1 Pole, 1 Irish, 1 Chinese, 1 Italian, 1 American and two Greeks required hospital treatment. Police earlier said that seven of the 29 who are hospitalized are in critical condition.

The threat level for international terrorism in the U.K. was already listed at severe, meaning an attack was “highly likely.”

President Donald Trump was among world leaders offering condolences.

London has been a target for terrorism many times over past decades. Just this weekend, hundreds of armed police took part in an exercise simulating a “marauding” terrorist attack on the River Thames.

May underscored that the attack targeted “free people everywhere,” and she said she had a response: “You will not defeat us.”

“Let this be the message from this House and this nation today: our values will prevail,” she said.

Afton City Council felt they weren’t getting enough out of their membership with the Union County Development Association. Dues were $3,000 each year, and the council felt Afton was neglected.

Wayne Pantini of UCDA said they would work with Afton to address their concerns and look at the benefits they receive with the partnership.

Prairie Solid Waste Agency had big plans for the area’s garbage. With the landfill closing Sept 29, PSWA was working on plans to build a transfer station so that waste could be transported to Des Moines.

Her husband, Howard (“Brownie”) and her children, Ronnie, a ninth-grader, Nancy, an eighth-grader, and Becky, a second-grader, were all big help to her although she still baked, cooked, washed dishes and kept up the housework.

According to a Creston Police report, Dana Jo Ecklin, 30, of Lenox, driving a 2016 Toyota, was slowing or stopped for a stop light when a 2007 Dodge driven by Jeanette Colleen Morrow, 64, of Lenox, was unable to stop and rear ended Ecklin’s vehicle. Both vehicles left the scene of the accident and drove to 900 E. Townline St. before reporting the accident and no investigation was able to be made at the scene.

Damage estimates are $700 to Ecklin’s vehicle and $300 to Morrow’s vehicle.

Damage estimates are $700 to Davis’ vehicle and $700 to Harvey’s vehicle.

Damage estimates are $1,500 to Smith’s vehicle and $1,000 to Miller’s vehicle.

According to a Creston Police report, Heatherington, driving a 2004 Chevrolet north on North Sumner Avenue behind a 2000 General Motors driven north on North Sumner Avenue by Collin William Trenkamp, 21, of Waterloo, checked his mirrors to see if he could change lanes, didn’t realize Trenkamp’s vehicle had stopped completely, did not have enough time to change lanes and rear ended Trenkamp’s vehicle, which pushed into a 2012 Chevrolet, driven by Gail Ray Steward, 73, of Orient, stopped in the left lane of North Sumner Avenue waiting for the vehicle ahead to turn.

According to a Creston Police report, Kipp, driving a 2010 Chevrolet north on North Birch Street, stopped at a stop sign but failed to yield to oncoming traffic and collided in the intersection with a 1998 Ford driven west on East Howard Street by Gena Ann Chumbley, 48, of Creston.

Judy Wells, 68, of Creston, who was a passenger in Chumbley’s vehicle, was injured and transported by ground ambulance to Greater Regional Medical Center, where her condition is currently unknown.

Damage estimates are $1,500 to Kipp’s vehicle and $1,000 to Chumbley’s vehicle.

Creston firefighters responded to a grass fire 9:05 p.m. Friday at the intersection of 130th Street and Lure Avenue.

According to a Creston Fire report, firefighters were dispatched for a grass fire on the north end of Three Mile Lake. Firefighters extinguished the fire with the help of Afton firefighters.

The fire was contained to the area around the lake.

According to a Creston Fire report, the grandson of Clifford Olsen, the owner, was burning sticks and the wind pushed the fire across the street and through a ditch. The fire was limited to less than half an acre. Truck 1 and Engine 2 were used to extinguish the fire.

Damage estimate is $10.

According to a Creston Fire report, firefighters were dispatched to 2084 195th St., for a grass fire that spread into hay bales owned by Bruce Fife. Upon arrival, firefighters found 40 hay bales burning along with grass.

Stephanie Wilkinson, 30, of Corning was charged with fifth-degree criminal mischief 1:38 p.m. Saturday in Adams County.

According to an Adams County Sheriff report, Adams County Dispatch received an incomplete 911 call from a distraught female saying she’d been assaulted.

The caller told dispatch she was heading north on Highway 148. The 911 call showed an approximate location south of Corning.

Adams County Sheriff’s deputies located the vehicle in the Casey’s parking lot. Officers discovered a verbal argument had taken place and turned physical.

Upon further investigation, Califf-Griswold was charged.

Califf-Griswold was being held on no bond until seen by the magistrate.

Tyler Alexander Estrada, 27, of Stuart was charged with operating while intoxicated 4:15 p.m. March 13 in Adair County.

According to an Adair County Sheriff report, Estrada operated a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.

Estrada was being held on $1,000 bond.

Cody Leon Zimmerline, 25, of Adair was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia 6:13 a.m. March 16 in Adair County.

According to an Adair County Sheriff report, officers were dispatched to 700 Fourth St., in Adair. Upon arrival, officers spoke with Zimmerline’s parents. They said Zimmerline, who resides in their residence, was using drugs in his room. The father showed officers pictures on his cell phone of a white powdery substance and glass pipes he took in Zimmerline’s bedroom. Officers went inside the residence and to Zimmerline’s room.

Officers knocked on the door, Zimmerline told them to open the door and said they could go in to talk to him. While speaking with Zimmerline officers could see drug paraphernalia in plain view. There was also a white powdery substance on Zimmerline’s computer desk. While speaking to Zimmerline, the mother opened up one of his medication bottles and inside was medicine and a green leafy substance. A glass pipe used to ingest methamphetamine and a glass pipe used to ingest marijuana were in plain view as well. A search warrant was obtained and other various drug paraphernalia and illegal narcotics were seized.

Zimmerline was released on his own recognizance.

A 140-character flaw The Trump administration is in the throes of one of the greatest self-inflicted distractions of the modern presidency.

The latest chapter comes from James Comey in his highly anticipated congressional testimony.

The FBI director said that he has no information to support President Donald Trump’s infamous weekend tweets alleging he was wiretapped by President Barack Obama during the campaign. This was treated as a bombshell, although what would have been truly surprising is if he said Trump’s allegations had a sound factual basis.

Every administration gets knocked off its game early on by something. What makes the furor over President Trump’s wiretapping claims so remarkable is how unnecessary it is. The flap didn’t arise from events outside of the administration’s control, nor was it a clever trap sprung

by its adversaries. The president went out of his way to initiate it. He picked up his phone and tweeted allegations that he had no idea were true or not, either to distract from what he thought was a bad news cycle, or to vent, or both.

Trump); congressional leaders have become consumed with the matter; and it has dominated news coverage for weeks. Such is the power of a couple of blasts of 140 characters or less from the president of the United States.

The flap has probably undermined Trump’s political standing, and at the very least has diverted him and his team from much more important work on Capitol Hill, where his agenda will rise or fall. In an alternative and more conventional universe, the White House would be crowing over Judge Neil Gorsuch’s testimony before Congress. Instead, it is jousting with the FBI director over wayward tweets.

Spicer was reduced to arguing that Comey’s categorical rejection of the wiretapping claim was only provisional. Let’s not jump to conclusions, etc., etc.

Such is the life of a press secretary when his boss has the power

to make him defend the indefensible during a few thoughtless moments alone with his phone.

Since the wiretapping allegations, Spicer’s days have been spent in the semantics, air quotes and epistemological gymnastics necessary to support Trump’s claims.

Only President Trump can make it stop. He has shown, despite his unwillingness ever to admit error, an ability over the past year to simply drop and move on from counterproductive controversies. He should do the same with his wiretapping tweets. All he has to say is that he accepts his FBI director’s statement and that he doesn’t want to talk about it anymore.

That would immediately drain some of the headline-grabbing drama from it, and relieve his underlings from their current exertions.

Comey’s second bombshell

was the more consequential one.

He confirmed that there is an ongoing FBI investigation of Russia’s role in the election and possible ties to the Trump campaign.

(It may eventually emerge that some of Trump’s conversations were picked up when people in his orbit were being surveilled in this probe, providing a fig leaf of vindication for his tweets.) It’s hard to see why the Russians would have had to involve Trump associates in what should have been a simple two-step process: 1) hack Democratic accounts; 2) give the resulting information to WikiLeaks. But Comey’s acknowledgement of the investigation will stoke the darkest suspicions of the left.

All the more reason for Trump to avoid doubling down on unforced errors. There are plenty of people who want to distract and damage his administration. The president of the United States shouldn’t be one of them.

Congress and NASCAR HOLLYWOOD – God bless America, and how’s everybody?

The House of Representatives votes today on the GOP health care bill. It’s a four-way gunfight between insurers and doctors and hospitals and drug companies. I think congressmen should be forced to wear uniforms like NASCAR drivers so we can more easily identify their corporate sponsors.

NFL free agent Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned after his refusal to stand for the national anthem last fall. The nation takes pro football very seriously. On Monday, the police found Tom Brady’s Super Bowl jersey, and pictures of miss- Brady ing kids have been put back on milk cartons in Texas.

The Secret Service reported three intruders scaled the White House fence last week plus a man sneaked into Trump’s study at Mar-a-Lago. It’s no secret why. The Nobel Peace Prize is awaiting anyone who can get ahold of President Trump’s smart phone and block him from his Twitter account.

The U.S. and Britain banned all electronic devices bigger than a cell phone in all airline cabins on flights from the Mideast. Who said cell phones are safe? Yesterday, I thought

Hawaii won’t vet the terrorists but they have a six-month quar-

Sinn Fein leader and longtime deputy First Minister in Northern Ireland Martin McGuiness died in Belfast on Monday. He was a legendary rebel. It’s been announced that McGuiness will be buried in an IRA weapons cache rather than cremation because they don’t want to set off the Semtex.

The White House started receiving bids for construction of a 30-foot-high Mexican border wall this week. The idea is to make it so difficult to smuggle drugs into the U.S., they become too expensive. Republicans believe as an article of faith that cocaine is too nice a high for working people.

California Democrats introduced a bill that threatens to divest state funds from any company that helps build the border wall with Mexico. California doesn’t need a wall to keep out illegal aliens, it has $2,000 per month rent. Try climbing over that without breaking your neck.

President Trump signed a bipartisan bill funding NASA on Tuesday which includes a mission statement for a manned mission to Mars. So far, in several years the Rover has found no sign of any beer, any porn or any football on the Red Planet.

So much for the theory that men are from Mars.

Trend alert: Wood planks warm up ceilings and walls (BPT) – For centuries, hardwood planks have been the ultimate material for residential floors. Combining exceptional durability with unrivalled good looks, oak, walnut, cherry or other solid-wood floorboards add value and beauty to any home they grace. But these days, handsome timber planking is not only found underfoot, but also on the ceilings and walls of many stylish houses, whether newly built or freshly renovated.

“Timber beams and wood paneling have always played important roles in historical and contemporary residential design, and continue to do so,” says Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Information Center, www.hardwoodinfo.com. “But in addition to these classic applications, we’ve seen a strong trend toward the use of floor-

board-style wood planks on ceilings and walls. Homeowners are finding it’s a great way to create interiors that are clean and modern yet still have a traditional warmth.”

New York-based interior designer Laura Bohn agrees.

“I’ve installed wood-plank ceilings in many projects, both in the city and the country,” she says. “The ceiling is often a forgotten surface, but I like to think of it as the fifth wall in a room - a blank canvas that can enhance the architecture of a space.”

A case in point is a vacation home in Aspen, Colorado, where Bohn used tongue-and-groove red oak planks on the floors and living-area ceilings. “It’s a big, sprawling house,” Bohn says. “Using the same materials underfoot and overhead gave the spaces added unity.” In some rooms, the

wood ceilings extend past clerestory windows to create covered porches that link the interior of the house to the mountain landscape outside.

More drama is provided by the natural light that streams through the clerestories and across the ceilings, changing the look of the red oak boards throughout the day.

Rebecca Ascher, principal at Ascher Davis Architects in New York and Newport, Rhode Island, points out that only large, high-ceiling rooms can accommodate such visually distinctive overhead treatment without being overwhelmed. “This is especially true if you’re using strongly characterful hardwoods like walnut or hickory,” she says. “In smaller, lower spaces, a plank ceiling with too much personality can feel oppressive.

In those situations, I would probably specify something

simple like poplar beadboard finished with a light, natural stain. That would look crisp and airy, adding visual interest while remaining pleasingly low-key.”

Home renovators discovered that installing new wood floorboards overhead is not only a surefire way to refresh an interior - even change its character entirely, if so desired - but also an effective method of covering old, damaged ceilings with relative ease. “Tongue-andgroove can be installed directly over drywall, plaster, and other ceiling materials,” Ascher says. “Just make sure it is securely attached to the joists underneath.”

Similar decorative and architectural transformations can be achieved by covering existing walls with wood planking. A feature wall clad in honey-colored oak or some other distinctive hard-

wood can give a room focus, bringing a sense of organization and intention to what was previously an amorphous or confused space.

It can also add warmth, color and texture to sleek, modernist interiors that can sometimes feel chilly or austere. That is what Texas-based Cornerstone Architects did in a contemporary Austin residence.

The decorative temperature of the master bedroom - a coolly elegant arrangement of steel and glass, polished concrete and white plaster - was raised a degree or two by turning the entire wall behind the headboard into a magnificent expanse of burnished walnut boards.

Light solutions: What to do when your house feels like a cave

(BPT) – A house with ample windows can win your heart with silent promises of sun-drenched rooms and warm breezes wafting through open windows. The truth, however, is that even a home with windows galore can have rooms that feel dark and cave like.

Some of the most-loved aspects of modern design open, expansive floor plans, wood flooring in darker tones, walls of windows -

may leave portions of a room dazzled with sun and other parts dim and poorly lit. For example, a room with a wall full of picture windows will often lack windows on other walls. Near the windows, you’ll get plenty of sunlight and some glare, but the natural light might not make it to the far corners of the room especially if it’s a large space like a great room.

What’s more, interior spaces like powder rooms,

Window dressing Maximizing the amount of light that comes in through the windows you do have is easy. Keep curtains light and airy, and use blinds or shades to control the amount of light coming from the window. Filtered overhead light can also create the effect of a natural light source. For example, drape light-colored, opaque fabric above a bed, so that the cloth conceals the overhead light fixture.

Crest Baptist hosting global Bible simulcast LifeWay Christian Resources and Going Beyond ministries are partnering to simulcast Bible teacher and best-selling author Priscilla Shirer, live from Tulsa, Oklahoma, on April 8.

Crest Baptist Church, 1211 N. Poplar St., is serving as a host location for Creston and the surrounding area.

Priscilla Shirer Live, sponsored by Nashville-based publishing company LifeWay Christian Resources, will feature Shirer’s dynamic storytelling and passionate Bible teaching.

Crest Baptist Church hosted this event last year and is excited to host the Shirer event again this year. It was a wonderful time filled with worship music, Shirer’s messages and prayer times. Participants felt very much a part of the live event and the women participated just as if they were in the arena.

The event, which also features a unique prayer time, both challenges and encourages women to know God’s word and grow deeper in their faith.

Shirer has authored a number of published Bible

studies, books and devotionals specifically for women including LifeWay-published Bible studies such as “Armor of God,” “Gideon: Your Weakness, God’s Strength,” “Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted” and “Discerning the Voice of God.” She also starred in the Christian film “War Room,” which has prompted many to deepen their relationship with God through prayer.

Anthony Evans, who also happens to be Priscilla’s younger brother, is slated to lead worship for the event. Evans is a popular Christian recording artist, and many fell in love when he was featured on NBC’s reality show “The Voice” in 2012.

Triple double for Westbrook OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Add another first for Russell Westbrook — a triple-double without missing a shot.

Westbrook recorded his 35th triple-double of the season with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 14 assists and the Oklahoma City Thunder cruised to a 122-97 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.

He did so while making all six of his field-goal attempts and all six of his free throws. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, no NBA player previously has had a triple-double without missing a shot attempt or free throw.

Settled in, ready to go Spartans confident ahead of today’s game against Pima ■

CAITLIN, Ill. — The jitters are out of the way for the Southwestern Community College men’s basketball team.

The top-seeded Spartans became locked in, particularly in the second half of Tuesday’s opening round win over College of Southern Maryland at the NJCAA Division II national tournament.

Southwestern took advantage of the off day Wednesday to enjoy a workout at Salt River High School and prepare for today’s quarterfinal game against eighth-seeded Pima (Arizona). Tip is at 1 p.m. at Mary Miller Gymnasium on the

campus of Danville Area Community College in Danville, Illinois.

“We got the sweats out, got the jitters out,” said Jordan Johnson. “No one had really been in that situation before.”

The Spartans hit their stride in the second half, outscoring the Hawks 52-37.

“We came out a little nervous, but once the second half started, we started getting back into a rhythm, started playing like we usually do,” said Alijah Thomas. “It helped our confidence, just doing what we’ve been doing.”

Coach Todd Lorensen saw his team settle in effectively over the final 20 minutes.

Looking back to a special season ■

Memories last for members of only other Southwestern Community College men’s basketball team to reach nationals

Before this season’s Southwestern Community College men’s basketball team captured the attention of the community and the campus, there was another team.

This one had a rare combination seldom found in junior college basketball.

The Southwestern Community College Spartans had plenty of beef inside.

They countered that outside with a strong combination of shooters.

Those Spartans had a much different skill set than this year’s team.

While this Spartan team like to run up and down the floor, the group led by coach Bill Taylor preferred to slow the game down.

Unlike this group of Spartans that come from all over the country, most of that team’s roster came from Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri. Seven alone were from Iowa, including two with ties to the head coach’s high school — Diagonal.

The 1998-99 Spartan team wasn’t the first to go to nationals.

The 1965-66 team, back when it was Creston Community College, reached nationals. The 1998-99 team tied the school record for most wins with 25, broken by the 2015-16 Spartan squad and shattered by this season’s team.

Those Spartans led by Bill Taylor made history, becoming the first team from Southwestern Community College to reach the NJCAA Division II national tournament. *** Taylor knew he had a good team heading into the 1998-99 season.

The 1997-98 team had went 2010.

It was setting up for a big season the next winter.

“We had some pieces coming back,” Taylor said. “We had some good pieces coming back. We were expecting a pretty decent year.”

Southwestern then had something unusual in the junior college ranks. The Spartans’ front line featured three big players — 6-foot-8 and 250, 6-8, 250 and 6-7, 240.

“Those were big, big strong guys,” Taylor said. “It was a whole lot different than it was today.”

Taylor recalled conversations after the first game at nationals against Newbury, Massachusetts.

“Coaches were coming up to me after the (Newbury) game. We had big, strong, thick kids, untypical for JUCO basketball,” Taylor said. “A lot of times the guys are athletic, can run, jump. We were more methodical. They were like, ‘Where did you find these big, thick kids.’ They had never seen guys like that could play with their back to the basket. In JUCO basketball, you don’t see a lot of back to the basket guys.”

The 1998-99 Spartans averaged 72 points a game offensively and allowed 67 points per game.

The Spartans used their size much to their advantage.

“We were slow and deliberate,” Taylor said. “We pounded it inside. We could guard people really well.”

The big guys opened it up for the shooters.

“If we didn’t have anything, we threw it back outside,” Taylor said.

“Terrance Jackson was 10th in the nation in three-point shooting. He could really shoot the ball.”

Like this season’s Southwestern team, that group of Spartans lacked a dynamic scorer.

Like this team, those Spartans were unselfish.

“Nobody seemed to care who

scored,” Tassel said. “We’d get the ball inside to the big guys, they’d kick it out. They would leave it open for me or a couple other guys for open looks from three. We had guys like Terrance Jackson who were good scorers, could score multiple ways. We were good at taking care of the ball.”

Jackson led the Spartans in scoring at 12.8 points per game. Jeremiah Ubben scored 11.6 points per game. Darran Miller, NJCAA Division II’s leader in field goal percentage, averaged 9.3 points per game. Jackson dished out five assists per game. Ali Hayes led the team with 6.8 rebounds a contest.

The unselfishness of this season’s team is something the 199899 team can relate to.

“Watching the (this season’s SWCC team), it doesn’t seem to matter who scores the points,” Tassel said. “They try to get up and down the floor. We tried to get it in to our be guys. We could slow teams down where they like to run and gun. They played some good defense. Coach Taylor prided himself on defense first, like this group.”

Like this season’s team, the 1998-99 team had to go through Kirkwood to earn a trip to nation-

als.

“It was a bit of a blur,” Tassel said. “I remember the game at Kirkwood. We knew them, they knew us. They were locked in on one of our really good shooters.

Justin Maggett from Winterset had the best game of his career.

He went 5-for-5. We would kick the ball inside to Jeremiah Ubben or Darran Miller. They would kick it out of the double team or we’d run set players for our shooters like Justin or myself. If they stayed and helped the big guys, they’d leave it open for Justin or myself.”

Kirkwood’s defense clamped down on Tassel, leaving Maggett open. He didn’t miss.

“They were not leaving me very much room,” Tassel said. “We knew he (Maggett) could knock them down.”

The end result meant Southwestern was going to nationals.

“It was like this year. They were the defending national champions.

The only difference was we were playing them on their home floor,” Taylor said. “Beating them on their home floor was surprising.”

Game preparation was much different than it was now.

Quality start for Panther girls track and field

The Creston girls track and field team was able to see some of the fruits of its labor after several weeks of winter workouts and practice when the Panthers competed at indoor meets at Iowa State and Central College over the last two weekends.

Coach Clay Arnold’s Panthers had more girls ready to go for the Iowa State meet, but it didn’t keep the Panthers from finishing strong on an individual level in a number of events.

Faith Wilson’s shot put toss of 31 feet-2 inches earned her 15th in a field of 91 at Central.

In the 60-meter race MaKenna Hudson ran an 8.80 and Kiersten Latham ran an 8.88. Those performances placed the two 28th and

40th respectively in a field of 198.

Hudson also went strong in the 400 and 200-meter races, posting times of 1:07.81 and 29.97 Hudson respectively.

Danielle Castillo showed up strong in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.92, good for 18th.

The 4x200 team of Kiersten Latham, Danielle Castillo, Sydney Pantini and Aubrianna Woody earned 33rd out of 46 teams with a collective time of 2:11.45.

At the Iowa State meet, the Panther girls reCastillo turned a number

of runners and field participants who upped the team’s chances at strong finishes.

H a n n a h Hood, in her first throwing competition of the year, tossed the shot put 37-7 7.5, good for fourth out of 69 Hood throwers.

Brielle Baker’s time of 2:36.99 in the 800 paved the way for a 15 spot out of 82 participants in Creston’s best individual running performance of the day.

Cayla Maitlen’s time of 8.72 in the 60-meter hurdles earned her a finish of 34th.

The best relay of either of the two meets came with the Panthers’ 4x800 relay team, that picked up 12th out of 96 teams with a time

of 10:59.24. That group was made up of Emma Hanson, Saige Rice, Allivea Skarda and Brielle Baker.

Several other Pride of Iowa teams competed, with strong performances from a couple of area athletes.

The Southwest Valley’s girls team ran seven girls at the Iowa State meet. Elizabeth Fuller’s 2:55.36 earned her 48th place in the 800.

At Central, Timberwolf freshman Bella Johnson placed in a tie for 8th in the high jump with a height of 4-8. The Timberwolves also got several girls into their first varsity action.

Mount Ayr brought its runners to Iowa State. Alyssa Johnson picked up a 30th place finish in the 60 meter race with a time of 10.56.

The Raiderette 4x400 team took 25th with a time of 4:37.55.

The Raider boys had several

strong performances at Central.

Trent Stull’s leap of 5-6 earned him 28th place.

The 4x400 team earned 20th with a time of 3:42.87. The runners for that relay included Mitch Jennett, John Young, Logan Arends and Cal Daughton.

Nodaway Valley’s boys team was competitive in a number of events at Iowa State. Shane Breheny nearly set a personal best in the 3,200 with a time of 10:15.22, good for 21st place. Brycen Wallace took 26th by running 10:22.57.

Lenox’s 4x400 team ran a 5:06.91.

“Anytime you come to a new venue and a different venue, you worry about players reacting in a weird way, taking shots out of their character, being a little loose with the basketball,� Lorensen said. “We had some of those things, but fortunately we pulled together and played well down the stretch, especially in the second half.�

The Spartans worked on a few parts of the game plan along with shooting drills during their workout six miles southwest of Danville. “It’s nice to have that (game) out of the way, then have a day to refocus, get ready for Pima.�

Southwestern’s next test comes from Pima.

The Aztecs opened with a 93-84 win over Waubonsee Tuesday.

Pima, based in Tucson, Arizona, come in at 22-11 and have won three straight.

The Aztecs have some size inside that is a concern for the Spartans.

Southwestern has seen teams with similar size and had success against them this season. “We’ll do a couple of things just slightly different from what our base defense may be, but it’s certainly nothing we haven’t done or had success with,� Lorensen said. “I know our guys will have confidence in the game plan and execute at a high level.�

Southwestern’s guards have been dominant all season. The Spartans will look to another strong game from Johnson, Calvin Chambers, Brodric Thomas, Alijah Thomas and company. “We’ve got a lot of really good guards, which is comforting as a coach,� Lorensen said. “You always hear people talk about guards win games in March. I certainly think that’s true. We have several guys who can go off and have a big night from the guard position.�

someone to slow down. “It makes it tough for a team,� Alijah Thomas said. “We don’t know who it will be. It could be anyone’s night, anyone’s game.�

If the Spartans are to face adversity today, going forward, Johnson is confident in the team’s ability to deal with it. “We’ve been through a lot of adversity,� Johnson said. “We’re ready for any situation now. It comes down to how we play. We’ve been with everybody, been through a lot of situations.� “We’ve got a lot of dog in us. That goes a long ways.�

Tracking down coaches to find out information was a challenge. The Spartans had one game film to prepare for Danbury.

“We went into that game and I thought we were very unprepared. We had one game film and that was about it. We might have been the most unprepared we’d ever been. We knew we could do our stuff, but we were unprepared from a scouting standpoint.”

Southwestern played well in the opening game, but ultimately fell 73-68.

This season’s team, Taylor noted, has the opportunity for something much more.

“They want to hold that trophy. They have a legitimate chance,” Taylor said.

“Coach Lorensen, coach Davis, I can’t express how good of a job they’ve done.

There’s been a lot of talented, deep teams, but there’s bickering that people aren’t playing. You can only play five at a time. It’s amazing what they’ve been able to build, to get those kids to work hard, buy into defensive systems, get in the weight room, daily fundamentals of the game, blocking out. They’ve just bought in. They’ve just bought in.”

The 1998-99 came together in ways that other Southwestern teams had not in the past.

“Steve Forbes’ second year, we had a group of talented kids that may have been able to rival these (the 2016-17) guys,” Taylor said.

“This group is real special.

They’ve come together as a team, sacrificed personal agendas for winning. That’s what you like to see as a coach — the ones that jell at the right time.”

The relationships Taylor

built with the team in practice are ones he still relishes, even though he no longer is involved as a coach.

Of course it counts, and not just in the books, but in all respects. You don’t have to be a grizzled and leathered fan to know one of the oldest facts of racing: The best car doesn’t always win. No other sporting activity matches auto racing for all the things that can go wrong. Among them: While you’re doing the “right thing” and pitting for new tires, someone else gambles on old tires and beats you. Ryan Newman’s team gambled and it paid off. For the second straight week, the driver leading the race with five laps to go was not the winner. At Vegas, Brad Keselowski was the leader and Martin Truex Jr. won. It happened again at Phoenix. Kyle Busch was way out front, but Ryan Newman won thanks to a late caution.

Joey Logano and Kyle Busch are in a stretch of races where one affects the other.

At Vegas, Logano crashed out Busch. At Phoenix, Logano crashed and brought out a late caution, resulting in Busch, who had led more than 100 consecutive laps, to finishing third. Chapter 3?

Clint Bowyer had this to say about his “13th-place finish.

It was that kind of weekend for us, really. Just a little off all weekend long. We got it better Saturday, and I really thought we were going to be all right there, but we actually ended up racing the way we struggled all day Friday.”

ISU MEN’S HOOPS Iowa State hits reset with Prohm firmly in control

By LUKE MEREDITH AP Sports Writer

AMES (AP) — Nearly seven years to the day he was hired, the Fred Hoiberg era is over at Iowa State.

Steve Prohm is now completely in control of the Cyclones’ future.

The last of Hoiberg’s recruits completed their careers Saturday in an 80-76 loss to Purdue in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Monte Morris, the point guard Hoiberg couldn’t keep on the bench as a spindly freshman four years ago, finished with a school-record 100 wins. Fellow seniors Naz Mitrou-Long, Matt Thomas and Deonte Burton blossomed into All-Big 12 honorees.

Iowa State (24-11 in 2016-17) never won a Big 12 regular-season title or reached the Final Four. But the Cyclones won three conference tournament titles, earned a school-record six consecutive NCAA Tournament bids and, perhaps most important, made the program relevant nationally.

“These seniors have been amazing,” Prohm said. “I challenged them to leave your jersey in a better place. Then I internally said, ‘Hey, we’ve got to get back to the NCAA Tournament.’ Hopefully we can win a championship and then hopefully we can get back to another Sweet 16 and see what happens.”

Most programs need to rebuild at some point, and 2017-18 looks like it might be one of those years for the Cyclones.

Iowa State might not be down for very long though.

Morris will probably be remembered as the best point guard in school history. But Donovan Jackson shot 45.4 percent on 3s in a reserve role last season with an assist-to-turnover ratio of better than 2-to-1, so he should be ready to be a quality Big 12 starter next season.

Freshman Solomon Young beat out a pair of fifth-year seniors for the starting job at center by February, and swing man Nick Weiler-Babb will get a chance to thrive in expanded role next season. Tennessee transfer Ray Kasongo, a 6-foot-9 forward, will also be eligible, and guard Jakolby Long will get a chance to crack the rotation now that Morris, Mitrou-Long and Thomas have moved on.

Prohm also has a promising crop of incoming freshmen.

The headliner of the group will be guard Lindell Wigginton, a top-40 recruit who should compete for immediate playing time. Wigginton could even emerge as a significant scoring option in 2017-18 for a team that will be seeking playmakers.

Cameron Lard, a 6-foot-9 forward who redshirted last season, is also expected to make an impact next season. Newcomers Darius McNeill and Terrence Lewis had offers from other power five schools before picking Iowa State.

One area where Hoiberg’s impact will still be felt will be in the graduate transfer market.

Prohm has embraced Hoiberg’s practice of adding veteran talent in the spring. He’ll likely look for at least a few fifthyear players who might be able to help keep the Cyclones from slipping into the Big 12 basement.

A seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance isn’t necessarily a realistic expectation for Iowa State, at least not yet.

But Prohm now has a chance to mold the team in his own image.

After winning 151 games in six seasons between the Cyclones and Murray State, that’s an opportunity that Iowa State and its fan base should be excited for.

“If you’re going to play at Iowa State and in certain other programs in the country, you got to be a great player and you got to have great character and toughness,” Prohm said.

Bulls down Pistons CHICAGO (AP) —Out of the rotation at times and with his contract set to expire, Nikola Mirotic understands what’s at stake for him as the season winds down.

Games like this certainly don’t hurt.

Mirotic scored a season-high 28 points, and the Chicago Bulls beat the Detroit Pistons 117-95 in a matchup between struggling teams fighting for a playoff spot on Wednesday night.

Mirotic shot 12 of 15 and made 4 of 6 3-point attempts to lead Chicago to an easy win after dropping eight of 10. He’s set to become a restricted free agent, meaning his future is in question.

“I just want to prove those guys who trusted me -- the Chicago Bulls,” he said. “They ... gave me a chance. I was a first-round pick in 2011. I want to play well here.”

Jimmy Butler added 16 points and 12 assists. Joffrey Lauvergne filled in for suspended center Robin Lopez and outplayed Andre Drummond with 17 points and seven rebounds. Rookie Paul Zipser added a career-high 15 points as the Bulls moved into a ninth-place tie with Detroit in the Eastern Conference.

Creston Middle School students do well at contest Creston Middle School hosted the annual Solo and Small Ensemble Contest Saturday, Feb. 23. Seven surrounding schools visited to be rated by music educators from across the state.

There were a total of 228 students participating in the event. Each judge selected an “outstanding soloist” from their center. Creston students are students of Ryan and Audrey Linke and received six of the seven awards.

“We are very lucky that we are able to host this event,” said Audrey. “We

are incredibly proud of the students and their dedication to music.”

Pentatonix plans national tour stop at Iowa State Fair video views in its first week and has since been certified gold. The group’s newest release, “PTX Vol. 4 - Classics,” out April 7, features their Grammy Award-winning performance of “Jolene” with Dolly Parton, as well as an arrangement of the John Lennon classic “Imagine.” Pentatonix also starred in their first network Christmas special, “A Pentatonix Christmas Special,” which aired twice on NBC last December, garnering 13 million views across the two airings.
