GRANT CITY, Mo. – The instincts of a U.S. Postal Service carrier in Worth County, Missouri, may have saved an 89-year-old farmer’s life earlier this year. Mark Abplanalp, a mail carrier for the post office in Grant City, Missouri, regularly delivers to Bud Maudlin at Maudlin Century Farm, about five miles north of Grant City. On Tuesday, April 16, 2015, Abplanalp delivered mail to Maudlin’s residence and, upon returning two days later, noticed the contents of his mailbox were still untouched. Concerned there could be something wrong, Abplanalp called Worth County Sheriff Terry Sheddrick. Sheddrick began searching for Maudlin, a partially disabled World War II veteran, with the help of two of Maudlin’s relatives: Cpl. Brad Maudlin and Bob McCully. Worth County dispatcher Bob Farrell said the crew arrived at the farm to find the house vacant but saw tracks from a tractor and followed them across the property. Then, they heard Maudlin

yelling for help and found him in desperate straits about a mile from his house. Maudlin had been using his tractor to do chores when it broke down. “It was awfully muddy at the time, and I couldn’t drive it,” Maudlin said. Maudlin, who uses a cane to walk, was unable to climb to the ground. He was stranded for three days and wasn’t able to call anyone for help, as he wasn’t carrying a cell phone. “I only had one cigarette and I smoked it,” Maudlin said with a laugh. “I didn’t have anything to eat or drink for 74 hours.” Maudlin was transported to the hospital in Maryville, Missouri, where he recuperated for two days. “I lost 14 pounds from dehydration, but I’m back to normal now,” Maudlin said. “Thank God for the mail carrier.” As for Abplanalp, he wishes he had been able to help sooner. “If I was delivering on Wednesday, I probably could have saved him a day,” Abplanalp said. Abplanalp recently received a letter of commendation from the Postal Service. He reportedly said he was

“tickled to death” that his action led to the successful rescue of Maudlin. While Maudlin is back to normal from the incident, he recently fell and broke two ribs. He is recovering, and his oldest daughter, Charlotte

Gunsolley, said he is doing well. “He tends to be accident prone and is fiercely stubborn to maintain his independence, so we’ve tried to honor that,” Gunsolley said. “He’s in pretty good shape for his age.”
