Creston man dies in grain bin accident By AMY HANSEN

OST news editor ahansen@osceolaiowa.com

MURRAY — Eric Reasland, 39, of Creston died Wednesday after getting trapped in a grain bin for more than three hours on 1024 Kendall St. near Murray. Emergency personnel responded to the accident around 9 a.m. Wednesday. Reasland was pulled from the grain bin by first reponders around noon Wednesday and was transported immediately to Clarke County Hospital in Osceola, where he was pronounced dead. Bill Kerns, sheriff in Clarke County, told reporters Wednes-

day morning the owner of the grain bin and Reasland, his hired hand, were getting grain out of the bin in the early morning hours. “Evidently, it had crusted over. The hired hand (Reasland) went down inside of the bin to break the crust on top of the grain,” he said. “The owner went back down on the ground to run the auger, and said he waited about eight to 10 minutes. (He) shut the auger off, went back up to make sure he was OK and couldn’t find him.” Kerns said a visual had been made on Reasland inside the grain bin around 10 a.m. Wednesday, but he was

surrounded by a significant amount of grain. Osceola Fire Chief Mike Fry said firefighters from Humeston, Winterset, Afton, Creston, Murray, Woodburn and Osceola responded to the accident. Vehicles from Iowa State Patrol and Wayne County Emergency Management were also spotted at the scene. Kerns said in his 31 years in law enforcement, he’s only seen a grain bin accident like this happen twice.

Local country artist Assistance Tyler Folkerts to perform needed in vandalism in Creston Saturday incidents By KELSEY HAUGEN CNA staff reporter

Country singer-songwriter Tyler Folkerts’ story doesn’t involve a dream since childhood of reaching stardom. In fact, he didn’t begin teaching himself to play guitar and sing until he was 20 years old, and even then, he kept it a secret for a while. He was far too shy to play for anyone. Now, the 28-year-old has opened for country artist Frankie Ballard and has been approached twice by casting agents of the TV show “The Voice” after they heard some of his covers on YouTube. “Compared to other people I’ve played in bands with, he knows his vocal range really, really well,” said Shaun Thornton,

erts will perform at The Lobby, 301 W. Adams St., in Creston. There is no cover charge. Folkerts, now of Maryville, Missouri, is originally from Bedford. After FOLKERTS | 5A

There have been a string of vandalism incidents in Creston recently, mostly involving damaged vehicles. According to Creston Police reports, no fewer than eight incidents have been reported of broken windows in vehicles or structures. “It’s been in the 500 to 900 blocks of the north side of town,” said Creston Police Chief Paul Ver Meer. “It’s been over the last week and a-half, two weeks.” No one has been charged in the incidents, but Ver Meer said officers have spoken to several people. “We can’t say for sure, but I think we’re on the

Several incidents reported took place along North Maple, West Irving, North Pine, North Walnut and West Fremont streets between the evening of Dec. 6 and the morning of Dec. 8. These incidents all reported windows broken out of vehicles. Ver Meer said the damage occurred to vehicles parked on the street. “Everything damaged has been (from) people driving by, so it’s been cars parked on the street, the side facing the street,” Ver Meer said. Since then, a slew of incidents involving bricks and rocks being thrown through vehicle windows has occurred on North Elm, West VANDALISM | 2A
