Iowa abortion ban temporarily halted By BAILEY POOLMAN

A ruling to ban telemedicine abortions in Iowa was halted Tuesday after an Iowa judge ordered a temporary stay on the decision. Iowa Board of Medicine voted Aug. 30 to set rules for telemedicine abortion, five years after Iowa became the first state in the nation to offer the pro-

gram. Polk County District Judge Karen Romano ordered the stay on the decision, which would have gone into effect Wednesday.

Temporary stay

According to a Des Moines Register story, Romano “expressed sympathy for Planned Parenthood’s argument that the medical board’s rule singled out the private agency’s video system, which has similarities

to other health care providers’ systems.” The ban focuses around a technology, which was first used in Iowa, that allows women in rural areas of the state, such as Creston, to receive medication for an abortion without having to drive to a clinic in a more populated area. Iowa Board of Medicine voted 8-2 to require abortion patients to meet with a doctor in person before being provided

abortion pills, and to schedule an in-person follow-up visit. “With respect to the lack of an in-person meeting, it is peculiar, as petitioners point out, that the board would mandate this for abortion services and not any other telemedicine practices in Iowa,” Romano wrote in the temporary stay. “There is simply no evidence the court can Please see ABORTION, Page 2

Wallace Centers 11th annual Holiday Boutique

ORIENT — The Wallace Centers of Iowa Country Life Center 11th annual Holiday Boutique is scheduled from Nov. 21-23. The boutique features hand-crafted products from southern Iowa vendors. The event is an offshoot of the gift shop’s inventory of local crafts. “It culminates the end of our growing season and the beginning of most people’s holidays,” said Wallace Centers CEO and Program Developer Diane Weiland. “It highlights how creative people are in this area.” Weiland Thursday will serve as a preview from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with Iowa wine tasting and holiday treats for $5. The OrientMacksburg Friends of the Library will also hold their annual homemade candy sale. Friday will have a lunch 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Gathering Barn. Reservations are not required for the lunch, but are required for the dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The Country Life Center will also be open Saturday 9 a.m. to noon. Please see QUICK NEWS, Page 2

Students at the Southwestern Community College agricultural site are cramming for one of their larger projects of the semester. Unlike typical college students who stay up late working on homework or studying before a big test, the ag students will be up before the sun Sunday to prepare for the 2013 Breeders Classic. “It’s the student’s responsibility to run the entire sale,” said SWCC Agricultural Instructor Erika Blair. “They start about 5 a.m. rewashing the cattle to make sure they look good.” The event starts at 1 p.m. and will feature show calves, bred production heifers and breeding heifers. Blair said the students have 30 head of cattle in the main auction and there will be five sold in a silent lot sale after the main event. Students in the livestock merchandising class have spent the entire semester preparing the ag site — located just north of SWCC’s main campus — for the sale, promoting the event in the community and contacting cattle farmers to buy and sell at the livestock auction. “We’ve been clipping and grooming, getting the cattle ready to look presentable,”

Southwestern Community College ag students will host the 2013 Breeders Classic. The event will feature 30 show calves, bred production females, and breeding heifers and will have a silent lot sale following the main event.

sophomore Ben Ostendorf said. “We also have spent a lot of time cleaning up shop because we want the place to look Ostendorf nice.” The sale features cattle from all over the state. Blair said a lot of the cattle are from southwest Iowa, but students encourage cattlemen from their hometowns to participate.

Class activity Blair said the class is structured to teach students every aspect of preparing for a livestock sale including design layout for fliers and catalogs and radio ads. “We go through how to wash and take care of the animals on a daily basis,” Blair said. “We also learn specific techniques like how to properly break calves to lead.” SWCC students will lead the cattle through the show and present video and pictures of each animal in the sale. At the

conclusion of the event, the students will also help with loadout. “We’ve been talking about what it takes to create a sale atmosphere,” Ostendorf said. “The pros and cons and costs that go into being on the merchandising side of livestock.” The event is not a major fundraiser for the SWCC ag students. Blair said any profit will be used to fund ag club activities. The livestock judging team will have raffle items and pies available as a fundraiser at the sale.
