Construction by Sharp Construction continues on KSIB Radio’s new broadcasting station just southeast of the current building Tuesday on Highway 34. Chad Rieck, KSIB general manager, said the new building will be ready to use by Jan. 1, and an open house will be scheduled after that.

KSIB plans for new radio station in 2016 By BAILEY POOLMAN Highway CNA staff reporter bpoolman@crestonnews.com

In just over a month, Chad Rieck and his fellow KSIB Radio employees will be seeing changes — literally, in the form of a new broadcasting building. Construction on the building, which has red siding and is located just to the southeast of the current KSIB radio broadcasting center, began in September, and Rieck, KSIB general manager, said he expects it to be finished and the radio hosts to begin broadcasting inside by Jan. 1. “Hopefully, the plan will be for the first of the year. It could be finished before that, and it’ll take a bit to move over there, but our plan is to be broadcasting from there the first of the year,” Rieck said. The current building, located west of Creston at 1409

34, is 69 years old, and has structural issues, such as in the found a t i o n Rieck and roof. A main reason for new construction is the amount of flooding in the basement every time it rains. According to Rieck, they could either start over with the construction of a new building, or spend more money to repair the current one. Sharp Construction of Creston is doing the construction on the building. Once it is finished, the old building will be torn down and cleaned up. The new space, which currently has outside walls, most of its windows, an open space for a garage door and framework for the inside walls, will be around 2,000

square-feet, which is smaller than the current space. “In the current one, we have a lot of wasted space in that building,” Rieck said. “Plus, there’s a basement in the current building, which there will not be in the new one.” There will be five broadcasting studios, five office spaces, a kitchen area, conference room, bathrooms and an attached garage with-

in the new building. Also included in the new building is a new control board, which is what they use to run everything, and a new satellite dish to make broadcast sound clearer. “I’m extremely pleased with how far it’s coming along. It’s going faster than I thought it would. I really like how it’s shaping up,” Rieck said. “I think, once we get all said and done, it’ll make the entrance to Creston look a lot nicer.” An open house will be planned after Jan. 1, but no set date is scheduled yet. “It’ll be a huge sense of accomplishment when it’s finished. This is something that needed to be done for some time now, and the timing was just never right,” Rieck said. “But, to finally be able to move into a new facility, providing our employees a clean space to work in everyday will be a huge benefit for all of us.”

DES MOINES — The American Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters a year – one every eight minutes – and most are home fires. Since Nov. 13, Iowa Red Cross volunteers have responded to 15 home fires around the state. As temperatures start to dip across Iowa this week, the Red Cross urges families to be cautious when using space heaters and other heating sources and to make a plan in case of a home fire. Heating sources are the second leading cause of home fire deaths, and fatal home fires increase during the winter months. “In just four days, Red

Cross volunteers have offered help and hope to 64 Iowans,” said Julie Struck, regional disaster officer for the Iowa Region of the Red Cross. “But the good news is that there are steps you can take when using heating equipment to reduce your risk of a home fire.” Heat sources such as space heaters, fireplaces or wood and coal stoves can pose a fire hazard, and fatal fires peak in the early morning hours when most people are sleeping. To reduce the risk of heating related fires, the Red Cross recommends the following tips: FIRES | 2A

Christmas basket donations for 2015 underway The 2015 Union County Christmas Basket Fund campaign is underway. This year’s fund goal is $19,000 and organizers are gearing up for another successful campaign. To date, $2,049 has been contributed. Last year, 550 baskets serving more than 1,200 people were distributed. Residents of care centers in Creston and Afton received fruit and Kleenex. Baskets include meat, canned goods donated through efforts of Boy Scouts and school and community projects and certificates redeemable at local supermarkets for perishable foods. Each child 18 and younger will also receive a gift certificate for clothing items. Along with providing food baskets and certificates to those in need at Christmas, monetary and food donations are used by The Christmas Basket Fund to provide assistance throughout the year. Those organizations are MATURA, Food for Life, Ministerial Alliance, open table and the food pantry. The Christmas Basket Fund board is assisted in packing and distributing baskets by the local Kiwanis, Lions Club, Rotary, VFW and FFA. Present board officers are: Ellen Gerharz, president; Bob
