The images painted on the Union County Freedom Rock by Ray “Bubba” Sorensen have come to life with the help of Creston High School teachers Anthony Donahoo, Todd Jacobson, Jeff Sand and their students. The tech-savvy teens have turned the memorial and Sorensen’s works of art into a true learning experience for anyone with access to a data-enabled Apple or Android device, such as a smart phone loaded with an application (app) called “Aurasma.” On Tuesday, students from CHS’s Environmental and Spatial Technology (E.A.S.T.) program unveiled the interactive, augmented reality application during the Union County Freedom Rock dedication service. What is it? Donahoo said the technology used is similar to that of a QR code. But, there is no QR bar code Donahoo or other markers on the rock to scan for it to work. “What it does is looks at the picture,” said Donahoo. Imagine aiming your smart phone at a poster, painting or photograph and, instead of only seeing the static image on your device, a voice could be heard describing the image. Some images on the Union County Freedom Rock triggers the Aurasma app to play music and the Pearl Harbor image features an interactive clip from Dec. 7, 1941. “At any point we can go and add information,” Donahoo said.

Police arrest 3 following college lockdown FORT DODGE (AP) — Authorities say three people have been arrested in connection to a lockdown at a community college campus in Fort Dodge. The Fort Dodge Police Department says the three people each face one count of aiding and abetting second-degree robbery. Court records do not indicate formal charges have been filed. The Fort Dodge Messenger reports authorities are looking for a fourth suspect. Iowa Central Community College was placed on lockdown for about three hours Monday after a student reported that an armed man entered her dorm room. Police say the student reported that several males entered her room while she and others were inside. She said at least one of the males displayed a firearm. The males soon left the room. No shots and no injuries were reported.
