EDFORD — A southern Iowa man is working to make the fruits of his labor profitable and give visitors a tranquil experience on his 10-acre orchard. Steven Wainwright, 69, of Prescott, has maintained the Ladoga LaBlanche Orchard – 7 miles west of Bedford on state Highway 2 – for more than three decades. For the past 2 years, he has opened it up to the public to share the experience of harvesting the freshest apples, pears, cherries and peaches in the area. Wainwright is pastor of Prescott Christian Church, and his wife, Cynthia, works full time at Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston. “I have found that people come here and find this a very peaceful place, almost like an outdoor sanctuary where CNA photo by JAKE WADDINGHAM

people can get away from the stresses of the world,” Wainwright said.
History Wainwright said his great-grandfather, Arthur Wainwright, homesteaded the orchard in 1875. He planted hundreds of trees and would take his harvest to the Ladoga Train Depot, about 2 miles northwest of the property. After the original orchard died out in the late 1930s, it was resurrected by Wainwright and his father, Edgar, in 1981 when a tornado severely damaged the property. “The weather in this part of the state is very unstable compared to other parts of the state in the sense that we are more likely to have late freezes in the spring or early freezes in the fall,” Wainwright said. “When you have a freeze, then it gets warm, then it freezes again, it is really hard on the trees.” Today he has more than 1,000 trees and replants about 150 trees each year to keep the orchard thriving. “I think because of my great-grandfather and my dad’s experience with orchards, and him going to the orchard near here (as a child), it kind of got in my blood,” Wainwright said. Creston Fire Department is hosting its third annual Band of Brotherhood 5K and firefighter hike Saturday, and more than 80 people are registered for the event. Of those 80 people, Dave Denton and his family are signed up to participate. At the event, Denton said his son Aiden will probably walk the firefighter hike with him, as he did last year. “It’s going to be nice enough out, and if Aiden walks with me, then we’ll probably just hang out in the back and enjoy the walk,” Denton said. Saturday’s weather forecast is sunny with a high of 58 degrees. “This is the third year they’ve (Creston Fire Department) had it, and the third year I’ve done it. It’s a good organization they do it for, that they send the money into,” Denton said. Money from the event goes toward the fire department’s
ed with creating some of his own varieties of apples using a method called grafting. He takes a limb from an apple tree and using grafting tape, he secures it to the root stock of another variety of tree. “What happens is that branch becomes the tree that you harvest it from,” Wainwright said. He added the biggest benefit of grafting is the tree typically grows to the size of the root stock, but has the characteristics from the branch attached. Please see ORCHARD, Page 12
members who will participate in American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb in Des Moines March 22, 2015. “That’s kind of one of the big reasons why (we do it). And, it’s just fun to get together and see a few different departments. Us (Afton), Creston, Mount Ayr’s been there before, Prescott, Orient. It’s nice to get together and see everybody. And, the name fits it well: Band of Brotherhood.” Afton Volunteer Fire Department won the team award at the first annual Band of Brotherhood 5K and hike. Creston Fire Department won in 2013.

VILLISCA (AP) — An unknown amount of ammonia has entered a small unnamed tributary of the West Nodaway River in southwest Iowa. The state Department of Natural Resources says the anhydrous ammonia was released from the United Farmers Mercantile Co-op in Villisca between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning. It went into a city storm sewer before entering the tributary. DNR officials detected high concentrations of ammonia throughout the tributary to the river, but no fish kill has been reported. Co-op employees are pumping contaminated water out of the tributary. They are also pumping contaminated water from an on-site pit. The case remains under investigation.
State employee stole more than $241,000
OSKALOOSA (AP) — A former employee for the Iowa Department of Agriculture has been accused of stealing more than $241,000 from her employer. The state Department of Public Safety says Jessica Strasser turned herself in Wednesday. She faces charges of first-degree theft and ongoing criminal conduct. Court records do not list an attorney. The state auditor’s office released a report in early October on the Mahaska County Soil and Water Conservation District for a time period between March 2006 and August 2013. It identified nearly $280,000 in improper disbursements and undeposited collections. Records indicate Strasser, who was secretary for the district, withdrew more than $241,000 in cash. Strasser resigned from the agriculture department in August 2013.

The driver of the truck then abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot. A search of the area for the driver was unsuccessful and was called off at 7 p.m. At 10:10 p.m. a rural resident near the intersection of Highway 2 and Rockwood Ave reported a man in their backyard.
