“The rain and cooler temps may slow harvest for some farmers depending on the planting date,” said Aaron Saeugling, extension field agronomist for 14 counties in southwest Iowa. “We may see crops stand in the field longer to dry down naturally rather than spend money

Pilot hurt in SW Iowa helicopter crash MACEDONIA (AP) — The pilot of a cropdusting helicopter is being treated for injuries after crashing in western Iowa over the weekend. The helicopter crashed in a field near Macedonia after hitting a power line Saturday afternoon. Treynor Fire Chief Russ Maguire said the pilot — whose name authorities have not released yet — was out of the wreckage and conscious when paramedics arrived. The pilot was taken to CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., for treatment. Authorities say his injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Federal authorities are likely to investigate the cause of the crash.

LEON — An inmate — who escaped from Decatur County Jail Friday — was captured by local and state law enforcement officers shortly before midnight Saturday. James Michael Murphy, 43, escaped from the jail during a clothing change around 8 p.m. Friday. Residents in southern Iowa were notified Friday evening and Saturday about the escape and that Murphy was considered dangerous. Law enforcement did receive a tip late Saturday evening that led to Murphy being arrested in a camper on SE Q Street in Leon. He was taken into custody without incident. Murphy was being held in jail on charges of first-degree kid- Murphy napping and second-degree sexual abuse. He now faces another charge of escape from lawful custody. Assisting in Murphy’s capture were: police officers from Leon, Lamoni and Osceola; sheriff deputies from Decatur and Clarke; Iowa State Patrol and Decatur County Conservation.
