Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker talks U.S.-China relations in Greenfield By KELSEY HAUGEN
“We fought, won and actually got results on the things that matter to everyday working families, individuals and seniors and did it without compromising common-sense conservative principles. If we can do all that in a blue state like Wisconsin, it’s not too late for America.”

GREENFIELD — After Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker made a statement Monday urging President Obama to cancel a state dinner with Chinese President Xi Jinping, there was concern whether he would lose support in Iowa, as the state exports millions of dollars in soybeans to China annually. Walker, who is campaigning for the Republican nomination for president, has since has put an emphasis on Iowa, stating he will visit all 99 of its counties. On Thursday morning, he held a meet and greet at The Corner cof-

fee shop in Greenfield, where he further explained his view on U.S.-China relations and discussed his main platforms: reform, economic growth and safety. In his speech Thursday, Walker worked to appeal to the crowd of Iowans by naming his accomplishments in Wisconsin, including tackling a $3.6 billion budget defi-
cit, lowering property taxes and cutting taxes by billions of dollars for small business owners, farmers and manufacturers. “We fought, won and actually got results on the things that matter to everyday working families, individuals and seniors and did it without compromising common-sense conservative prin-
ciples,” Walker said. “If we can do all that in a blue state like Wisconsin, it’s not too late for America.” U.S.-China Relations In 2013, Walker was invited by Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad to attend a meeting in Beijing with Xi. Branstad has had a Please see WALKER, Page 2

Axel Martwick, 3, of Creston fills his cup during an open house at Discovery Kids Preschool Wednesday evening. Martwick will be attending preschool there on Tuesdays and Thursdays this year. Kristie Nixon, early childhood education director with Southwestern Community College, said this morning that preschool numbers are down this year in Creston and urges parents with 3- and 4-year-olds to register soon as preschools will start later this month or early in September. There are five preschools in Creston including Creston Head Start, Discovery Kids, Trinity Lutheran, Creative Beginnings and St. Malachy. Nixon reminds parents the state does pay for 4-year-olds to attend preschool for 10 hours per week.

Library board discusses architect drawings By KYLE WILSON
CNA managing editor kwilson@crestonnews.com
Pros versus cons. That was the focus of Creston Library Board when it met earlier this week to discuss preliminary drawings recently produced by FEH Associates of Des Moines for an 8,995-square foot expansion to Gibson Memorial Library. Nearly all board members gave positive feedback on the drawings. “I’m really pleased with how the architects took the dialogue, conversation and comments (during the design charrette) and moved them into what looks to be a pretty functional space,” said Connie Maxson, library board member. David Hargrove, library director at Gibson, did have concern with the lack of added space designated for print materials. “I’ve said it before and I’ll say Hargrove it now, I’d like to have a facility that will accommodate print materials for the next 20 to 30 years, rather than the next two to three years,” Hargrove said. The executive director at the Southern Prairie YMCA in Creston will retire from her post Dec. 31. Jacki Steffen has been director there since 2006. In a letter to members, Valerie White — president of the YMCA board — thanks Steffen on behalf of the board for her dedication and also for providing leadership at the Y during those years that resulted in facility improvements, growth in programs and services for the community. “This is a family-based decision (by Jacki) that we respect. Jacki will certainly be missed,” White said. White said the Y board has Steffen already developed a transition committee that will work with the YMCA of the USA to conduct a national search for Steffen’s replacement and develop a plan that will build upon the success of the Creston YMCA today. The position will be posted both locally and nationally with resumes accepted through Oct. 14. The board hopes to have a replacement no later than Nov. 19, with Steffen’s successor starting Dec. 14. “(The YMCA) has been a part of the Creston community for 20 years and plan to be here for all future generations to come,” White said.
