Giving back: The family of 2015 Creston graduate Tayler Pettit presented an automatic external defibril-

lator (AED) to the Creston High School activity complex Tuesday morning outside the high school building. The Pettit family provided matching funds to place the AED near the football field and new bus barn in partnership with the Greater Regional Healthcare Foundation. Local veterinarian loves his work with cattle By KELSEY HAUGEN

As Dr. Tim Nelson performed ultrasounds on heifers Tuesday morning, he coaxed a frightened one: “Hey, sweetie. Easy, girl.” Once she calmed down, he was able to examine her. An unborn calf appeared on the moving sonogram. “Alright, 40 days, Mikey,” Nelson called out. Mike Miller, who helps with the process, recorded the information. “It’s amazing how much a calf grows in 40 days,” Nelson said, looking at his monitor. Ultrasounds have become a regular part of the job for Nelson, 32. He is one of the veterinarians and co-owner of Creston Veterinary Clinic. He started at the clinic in June 2009, one month after graduating from the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University. Whenever he’s asked why he chose the veterinary path, Nelson gives the same answer: “From a young age, I wanted three things – to be able to work outside, work with animals and

The portion of Academic Avenue connecting Creston Community High School to the Elementary/Middle School will be moving to one-way traffic at the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year. Once the change goes into effect, drivers will still be able to travel north from the high school to the elementary school, but not in the other direction. Steve McDermott, Cres- McDermott ton Schools superintendent, said this change comes due to safety concerns. “One issue was that we had certain folks that were driving too fast,” he said. “Another is it was not always safe, especially given the two-way traffic. It just seemed like that drive in places is tight anyway.”

McDermott said much of the driveway was built before the Elementary/Middle School building, and he said it wasn’t intended for primary traffic. The main people affected by the change, he said, will be staff who travel between the buildings. “We’ll try to set routines from the start,” he said. “It should not create major challenges for parents and students and the general public.” McDermott said the road will still allow two-way traffic on Friday nights, as has been the practice in the past. One-way signs will be installed before school starts Aug. 26. McDermott said the school is also considering closing the gate behind the high school during the school day, which will increase security. Students will still be able to drive in the front of the building and park in the high school parking lot, but they will not be able to come through that gate and come through the west drive.
