crete silos, two machine sheds, numerous vehicles/ machinery and a large shop. “It was a war zone out here yesterday,” Walter said. “But, it looks better today. There were cars lined up along the roads everywhere with people in
pickups pulling flatbeds, skid loaders, a crane and hundreds of people walking the bean field. I want to send out a big thank you to everyone who helped.” Walter said there is still a lot of cleanup left, though. Her house is “salvageable” with one large hole in the
roof above the kitchen and several broken windows in her sun room. She said she’s already lined up a carpenter to replace the roof. The 74-year-old Walter said this morning her family plans to rebuild the structures on the farm that she’s lived at since 1967.
GOP awaits top 10 candidates WASHINGTON (AP) — They crowded the stage in New Hampshire for a debate-style faceoff. But the jam-packed Republican field will be narrowed considerably for the first formal debate of the 2016 primary season later in the week. On Tuesday, Fox News announces which 10 presidential hopefuls can participate and the exclusive club will feature notable omissions. All but three of the 17

major Republican candidates for president participated in a New Hampshire forum Monday night that was essentially a “debate lite.” Unlike Thursday’s nationally televised debate in Cleveland, the gathering didn’t have a cut-off for participation. In their
upcoming Ohio meeting, only the GOP’s top 10 candidates in national polling will be allowed on stage. “We never ever envisioned we’d have 17 major candidates,” said Steve Duprey, New Hampshire’s representative to the Republican National Commit-
tee, who helped create the GOP’s 2016 debate plan. “There’s no perfect solution.” Without exception, the candidates on Monday aimed their criticism at Democrats instead of each other in a two-hour faceoff where Republicans had more in common than not. Two vacancies. One candidate. That’s how the Sept. 8 Creston School Board ballot is shaping out, following Thursday’s 5 p.m. nomination deadline. Curr e n t m e m bers Ron Dunphy and Rick Fyock are Dunphy not running for re-election this y e a r , making B r a d James, a 1995 CHS Fyock graduate, the election’s only candidate. James, 39, is a swine nutritionist with the James Ohiobased Kalmbach Feeds Inc. He has a bachelor’s in animal science from Iowa State University and a master of science and doctorate in philosophy, both with emphases in swine nutrition, from Kansas State University. After 10 years living in
Ohio, James moved back to Creston last summer with his wife, Melissa, and their two children. His daughter, Lilly, is in second grade and his son, Ben, will be entering kindergarten. His father, local attorney Marion James, served on the Creston School Board for 15 years. James said he believes his experiences, including time spent on a school board in Ohio, will bring a unique perspective to Creston’s board. “I think that will help me contribute to creative problem solving and teamwork,” he said. “Graduating from Creston High School, I’ve got the utmost respect for the history and the success of the Creston School, and I’m familiar with several of the board members and look forward to the opportunity working with them side-by-side.” Dunphy, who is in his fourth year and currently serving as president, said he has seen significant progress made in the goals he set when he ran for the board, especially in the areas of volunteerism and technology. “As a result of those goals, and what I have seen, I think it’s time for somebody else to pick up the challenge,” he said. Fyock, who has served for about five years, said he has enjoyed his time on the Please see SCHOOL BOARD, Page 2
