CNA managing editor kwilson@crestonnews.com
A new director will soon be hired at Gibson Memorial Library. Creston Library Board will interview two applicants for the open position later this month with interview dates set for June 17 and June 23. “They both look promising,” said Jeromy Brown, library board member. The names of the two applicants are not being announced at this time. The position came open in March when Marilyn Ralls resigned after 12 years with the library. Sue Teutsch has filled in as acting director since Ralls’ departure. The library board hopes to have a new director in place in July.

Library expansion The board officially signed a contract agreement Monday with an architect firm — FEH Associates of Des Moines — for the redesign, renovation and expansion of the current library building in Creston. FEH has managed the design and building/renovation of more than 100 libraries in the past 20 years. Ann Coulter, library board chairwoman, said moving forward FEH will now assess the library building and look at possible design expansions that meet the needs of the community. A design session will be scheduled later whereby Brown said the public, architects and members of the board will work together to formulate a unifying goal for the expansion of the current library. No dates have been set yet for that design session.

Council Bluffs moves forward with Wi-Fi plan COUNCIL BLUFFS (AP) — Council Bluffs has received equipment that will allow it to move forward with plans to offer wireless Internet throughout the city. The city and its school district agreed to partner months ago in expanding Wi-Fi access from the current, few hotspots that are
scattered throughout the community, the Daily Nonpareil reported. The goal is to help offer students, most of whom already have been issued a laptop by their schools, access to the Internet so they can use the technology for homework or other projects, said
Mark Howard, who serves as the city’s chief information official. “Our goal is to cover where residents live, especially those with students,” Howard said Monday. He added the Wi-Fi network could improve public safety and help increase economic development in Council Bluffs.

City staff will be helped in the Wi-Fi expansion by the Georgia-based firm, Smartwave, which Howard said is experienced in municipal wireless Internet network installation. The first phase of the expansion will occur in the neighborhood around a middle school.
Howard hopes the Wi-Fi project will finish this year. Some of the costs to expand Wi-Fi in the city will come from the private sector, with Google leading the charge, Howard said. “It looks like a wonderful plan,” councilwoman Sharon White said.
