Village set retail sales records from May to August despite hot weather

When The Sacred Rites rented a portable retail stall in Utica, they quietly identified some objectives for their first summer at the Market on Mill – and then crossed their fingers.

Owner David Fernandez said the verdict is in: The inaugural summer at Utica’s outdoor retail plaza was a smash hit.

“We are incredibly pleased with how our inaugural year at Market on Mill unfolded,” Fernandez said.

“Before our grand opening, we set clear financial and personal goals for ourselves, and we’re proud to say that we met and, in many ways, exceeded those expectations.”

Fernandez isn’t the only retailer pleased with the preliminary results of the retail plaza. According to Illinois Department of Revenue data updated Monday, Utica enjoyed its best summer ever.

Revenue reported by Utica broke same-month sales records from May to August and just missed setting a September record, too. Utica’s share of retail sales through the first three quarters came to nearly $500,000, the village’s best showing through Sept. 30.

“We’re honestly thrilled with how the season went,” said Myria Haff of MNB Sweets, another of the businesses to open a portable stall. “The support from the Utica community, visitors and fellow vendors was incredible – far beyond what we expected for a first-year market.”

Freckled Farm Girls owner Kendra Lange called the first year “very successful.”

“Looking ahead, I think there’s even more potential for growth,” Lange said. “Adding events like movie nights, live music and community-centered activities could continue to enhance the experience for visitors and bring our community even closer together.”

Although the testimonials were positive, the summer numbers come with a caveat: Nearly every city in Illinois is bringing in more money.

Springfield changed how it taxes online purchases starting Jan. 1, 2025, and that structural change has inflated the yearly totals across the Illinois Valley.

Utica’s Market on Mill reports strong summer

Utica enjoyed record sales this summer, and village officials credit the Market on Mill, the outdoor retail plaza, for helping topple records.

Nevertheless, retailers in Utica and village officials have confirmed that the data is accurate insofar as they enjoyed a good summer.

Utica Mayor David Stewart polled business owners and closely monitored feedback at the Market on Mill.

He said he liked what he heard.

“Overall, it looks like everybody

had a good summer,” Stewart said.

Stewart said the only reported negative was the hot weather. Though the mercury never hit 100 degrees this summer, stifling summer heat suppressed foot traffic and limited the appeal of outdoor dining.

The weather might have been hot, but shoppers weren’t deterred by rain,

either. The Weather Channel’s website showed fewer than 10 days’ rain between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Furthermore, the Illinois Valley was mired in drought.

Foot traffic at the nearby Starved Rock and Matthiessen state parks was projected to top a combined 2.6 million by year’s end.

Horizon House Tree of Hope campaign seeks $75K goal Peru agency has raised $51,337; needs $23,662 more by Christmas

By MARIBETH M. WILSON mwilson@shawmedia.com Horizon House in Peru has launched its annual Tree of Hope campaign with a goal of raising $75,000 to support programs for people with disabilities.

Glenn Underwood, a Horizon House resident, is serving as the 2025 campaign chairperson. The funds will support the Personal Support Worker, Community Employment and Community Day Service programs.

“I like helping people, and I know the Tree of Hope raises money to support people at Horizon House,” Underwood said.

For each $50 donation received in December, a light will be added to the

Christmas tree in front of Horizon House at 2000 Plank Road. The campaign aims to light 1,500 bulbs on the tree by Christmas.

As of Dec. 10, the campaign has raised $51,337.75 and lit 1,027 bulbs. Horizon House needs to raise $23,662 more to light 473 bulbs to reach its goal.

Donors who cannot give $50 can combine gifts with others to help light the tree.

Underwood, who moved to Mendota three years ago, grew up in Ottawa and attended Ottawa Township High School.

He participates in Horizon House’s Community Day Services and enjoys spending time in his community, including Mendota Area Senior Services and the Mendota library.

Horizon House is a United Way agency that provides services to people with disabilities in the Illinois Valley.

Kent Terry donates proceeds from faith-based stories to ELCA program

You’ve been involved with the ELCA World Hunger program for decades.

How did that shape this book?

By BILL FRESKOS bfreskos@shawmedia.com Marseilles author Kent Terry has spent much of his life balancing adventure with service, climbing mountains, paddling remote waters, taking risks in nature and all while supporting hunger relief work through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

His new book, “Adventures in Faith – Faith in Adventures,” tells stories of those experiences and how his faith has shaped them.

Proceeds from the book go to the ELCA World Hunger program.

Through speaking engagements and fundraising, Terry said he hopes his stories will inspire readers and help feed children in the community and the world.

What inspired your new book?

Some stories are high-adventure, some are simple moments of observing faith in everyday life, but I hope readers drawn to either adventure or faith won’t be disappointed.

My first spark of writing actually came from the Daily Times newsroom.

In my early 30s, with a new child at home and needing a second job, I became a sports stringer working with Dan Eilts.

I loved the writing, I loved the sports, and yes – I loved seeing my byline in the Saturday morning paper.

What pushed you to turn that booklet into a fully published book?

Terry: It wasn’t so much the recognition as it was two experiences: having my story “At Death’s Door” appear worldwide in Rotarian magazine, and living through the 2013 flood.

The Times printed my flood-recovery stories, which helped keep the recovery effort in the news long after the headlines faded. Those stories helped me raise $35,000.

You’ve given to many causes,

Terry: My wife and I support dozens of causes, but my heart is especially close to ELCA World Hunger. I know the staff personally. I’ve seen the programs firsthand, including in Mexico City, and I’ve attended gatherings across the U.S. and Canada. ELCA World Hunger doesn’t just feed people; it empowers them to feed themselves.

What are your fundraising goals with the book?

Terry: I reached my goal of $4,000 by Thanksgiving and would love to hit $5,000 by Christmas, although a broken ankle from cross-country skiing last week has slowed my speaking engagements.

One of my favorite moments came just after publication. I had invested about $5,000 to have the book edited and published by a New York publisher, including paid illustrations. I planned to recoup the investment and then donate 75% of the proceeds to ELCA World Hunger.

But at breakfast one morning, I put down my coffee, looked at my wife Ann and said, “We’re not waiting.

We’re going to start feeding hungry kids now.” It was one of the best decisions I ever made.

What has the response been like?

Terry: Incredible. I can send dozens of Facebook posts. Sharing these stories has been a joy.

Kent Terry: The book is exactly what the title promises. I’ve lived a life full of adventure, mountain climbing, ice climbing, skating, canoeing in the Boundary Waters, kayaking and more.

Adventure naturally comes with danger, and that danger shaped my Christian faith in profound ways.

Terry: I’ve served on the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America World Hunger Subcommittee for the Northern Illinois Synod for 35 years.

Around 2000, at a national gathering, we were introduced to Stand with Africa – a campaign responding to famine, war and the AIDS crisis. Sitting there, hearing about so many dying without even knowing why, I kept thinking: “What can I do?”

That led me to put my stories into a small, loose-leaf booklet. I sold it for $5 at churches and clubs, explaining the crisis in Africa. People responded to the stories, but even more to the mission. I raised $5,000 and was later recognized by the ELCA for that effort.

This holiday season, the La Salle County Sheriff’s Office is joining state police and local partners to keep holiday travel safe.

The “Click It or Ticket” and “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaigns run through Jan. 5, 2026.

Officers will patrol for seat-belt violations, speeding, distracted driving and impaired driving due to alcohol or drugs, including cannabis.

“Christmas and New Year’s bring more vehicles, longer trips and more festivities,” said Sheriff Adam Diss.

“Seat belts remain one of the simplest and most effective ways to save your life in a crash. We’re asking every driver and passenger to buckle up, every trip, every time – and to plan a sober ride before the celebrations begin. If you drink alcohol or use can-

nabis, don’t drive.”

Plan with these tips: • Before you go out, choose a sober driver or plan to use a taxi, public transit or a ride share service (Uber, Lyft, etc.).

• If you host, offer alcohol‑free beverages and help guests arrange sober transportation.

• If you’ve used cannabis, do not drive. Effects can be delayed and impair reaction time and judgment.

• If you see an impaired driver on the road, pull over safely and call 911.

• Make sure everyone in the vehicle wears a seat belt. It’s your best defense against an impaired driver.

This Christmas/New Year’s enforcement effort is supported by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation. It aligns with Illinois’ statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Click It or Ticket” and “It’s Not a Game” campaigns.

Jones, 32, of Chicago appeared Thursday in La Salle County Circuit Court and entered a blind plea to aggravated domestic battery, a Class 2 felony carrying a sentence of three to seven years in prison.

In exchange for his plea, La Salle County prosecutors agreed to recommend no more than five years in prison when Jones stands for sentencing Feb. 6.

victim in the case went to Mendota police and said she and Jones had an early-morning argument that turned violent.

Jones, she told police, tried to choke her, and then Shaquille Jones he took her phone and laptop to keep her from calling police. Jones would not come out of the residence, prompting a midday standoff with Mendota police that brought the 1100 block of Fifth Street to a standstill.

No shots were fired, and Jones surrendered without injury to himself or others.

The investment helps ensure local families have consistent access to milk, a vital source of protein and essential nutrients for growing children and individuals facing food insecurity.

“United Way of Eastern La Salle County is committed to ensuring our community’s basic needs are met,” Community Investment Committee Chairman Bob Pursley said. “Our committee is grateful for the generous contributors who make it possible for us to provide this allocation to the Community Food Basket of Ottawa.”

The Milk Program provides milk for thousands of families and households throughout eastern La Salle County. Families receive milk vouchers redeemable at local grocer Handy Foods, allowing them to choose and purchase fresh milk with dignity and convenience.

Federal Reserve survey: From steep losses to modest profits

By TOM C. DORAN tdoran@shawmedia.com Agricultural conditions remained strained but slightly improved over the last six weeks, according to a survey across the Corn Belt’s Federal Reserve districts.

The Beige Book, published about every six weeks, summarizes comments from contacts surveyed on or before Nov. 17.

Each Federal Reserve Bank gathers information on current economic conditions in its district through reports from banks and branch directors, plus interviews and online questionnaires completed by businesses, community groups, economists, market experts and other sources.

This document summarizes comments received from contacts outside the Federal Reserve system and is not a commentary on the views of Federal Reserve officials.

Here are what the Corn Belt districts reported regarding agricultural conditions:

Chicago

Net farm income prospects for the 7th District increased slightly during the Oct. 7 to Nov. 17 reporting period as crop prices increased.

Corn and soybean harvesting went

quickly across most of the district, although dry conditions hurt yields in some places.

District corn and soybean production was strong despite some disease pressures, and crop quality varied widely. Applying fungicides helped avoid some crop losses, but it also boosted costs.

Soybean prices increased with additional international buyers, including the return of purchases by China. Corn and wheat prices also rose.

Cattle prices decreased amid increased volatility in cattle markets, and hog, milk and egg prices were down as well.

“Contacts reported highly variable financial performances by farms, with some experiencing steep losses and others making modest profits,” according to the report. “Many farmers were delaying capital expenditures due to tight margins.

“With farmland values holding steady, most farm operations should be able to cover higher expenses for the 2026 growing season.”

The 7th District of Chicago includes the northern two-thirds of Illinois and Indiana, all of Iowa, the southern twothirds of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.

St. Louis

Agriculture conditions in the 8th District have remained strained but are slightly improved since the previous report.

Recent low water levels in the Mississippi River have caused significant reductions in barge capacity and efficiency, resulting in further cost increases.

A farmer in Mississippi reported that farmers are storing their crops and waiting for market movement to unload products, as supply is significantly above demand.

Another farmer in Mississippi reported that conditions are starting to trend better, noting a slight increase in commodity demand.

The St. Louis Federal Reserve District includes the southern parts of Illinois and Indiana and eastern half of Missouri, as well as parts of Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky and Mississippi.

Health care provider describes law as ‘fundamentally inconsistent’ with its mission

“The legislation sounds good, but I’m not comfortable with taking the decision of life and death out of the hand of God and putting it in the hands of man.”

At Faith Church in Peru, Pastor Steve Adamson also expressed opposition.

“Christians who believe the Bible is God’s Word must reject the idea of assisted suicide,” Adamson said. “If life’s beginning at conception and life’s end at death are in God’s hands, both abortion and suicide, assisted or otherwise, represent violations of His prerogative. Abortion steals from the womb a life yet to be started; suicide hastens to the grave a life yet to be completed. The Psalmist implies symmetry of God’s activity in both birth and death when he writes, ‘All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.’ (Psalm 139:16)” Among local lawmakers, reaction was divided largely among party lines,

with the Democratic governor expressing support for the terminally ill – albeit after a span of deliberation that included a meeting with Pope Leo XIV. “I have been deeply impacted by the stories of Illinoisans or their loved ones that have suffered from a devastating terminal illness, and I have been moved by their dedication to standing up for freedom and choice at the end of life in the midst of personal heartbreak,” Pritzker said. “Today, Illinois honors their strength and courage by enacting legislation that enables patients faced with debilitating terminal illnesses to make a decision, in consultation with a doctor, that helps them avoid unnecessary pain and suffering at the end of their lives. This legislation will be thoughtfully implemented so that physicians can consult patients on making deeply personal decisions with authority, autonomy, and empathy.”

Supporters call it medical aid in dying. Opponents call it assisted suicide. The health care network serving the Illinois Valley favors the latter phrase – and has pledged not to engage in it.

After Gov. JB Pritzker signed the legislation Friday, reactions poured in from activists, lawmakers, clergy and OSF HealthCare, which operates local hospitals and medical offices. In a statement, network officials were “saddened” by the signing and said they were bound not to comply.

“As a Catholic health ministry, OSF is guided by honoring the dignity of every human person and we will not participate in or support any form of physician-assisted suicide,” the network said in a statement. “These practices are fundamentally inconsistent with our mission to serve with the greatest care and love. We will always uphold the sacredness of human life from conception through natural death.”

During the next nine months, when the legislation takes effect, OSF said it would “educate our patients, the public and our mission partners about the legislation” and would continue to provide palliative care, hospice, pain management, emotional support and spiritual care to patients.

The statement follows a denunciation of the law by the Catholic bishops of Illinois, including Peoria Bishop Louis Tylka.

“Life is a precious gift from God, and this law clearly does not recognize this gift,” Tylka said in a preface to the bishops’ statement. “There are other ways, namely palliative care, that can accompany the sick and dying. I pray that we, as Catholic citizens of the state, will continue our efforts to support a culture of life and provide the necessary care for our sisters and brothers who need love and compassion as they confront their illness and dying.”

Catholic clergy weren’t the only ones to object to the legislation. Protestant and nondenominational Christian pastors also objected.

“I’m against legislation that takes life (abortion and assisted suicide) and

for Illinois residents,” said Deb Robertson, a retired Lombard social worker who worked to pass the Deb’s Law. “Today, I know the end for me could be near. But I’m pleased to have been able to play some role in ensuring that terminally ill Illinoisans have access to medical aid in dying.”

“As someone who is disabled, disability justice has always meant having the right to determine how I live,” said Beth Langen, a longtime disability rights advocate from Springfield who testified in support of Deb’s Law. “We know that disability is not terminal.

And like anyone else, I may face a terminal illness in the future that will make death imminent. If I do, I want my right to self-determination to include the final days of my life.”

“My son, Andrew, died peacefully utilizing the option of medical aid in dying in California, where he lived,” said Suzy Flack, a former Naperville resident who testified in support of Deb’s Law. “Most of our family members were able to travel to be with him, but his grandmother couldn’t travel to California because of her age. She never got to see Drew for a final goodbye. No other family in Illinois will experience that hardship.”

State Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, called the enactment “a grave mistake for our state” and said the legislation was passed at 2:30 a.m. on the final day of Veto Session.

“Instead of slowing down and listening to the many voices urging caution, the governor chose to push Illinois down a path that puts vulnerable people at risk,” she said. “After hearing from countless faith-based communities and advocates opposed to physician-assisted suicide, I cannot in good conscience support the decision to create a law that allows the state to sanction the ending of a life under circumstances that are ripe for abuse.”

“I am deeply disappointed to see the governor sign this bill into law,” said state Sen. Li Arellano Jr., R-Dixon, whose district includes parts of La Salle and Bureau counties. “I have compassion for individuals facing serious illness or pain, whereas this law risks presenting death as an option when many patients could still pursue treatment and care to recoup a healthy and long life.”

Bears answer Johnson’s challenge in Browns blowout

By MICHAL DWOJAK mdwojak@shawmedia.com About a week ago, Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson wanted to send out a clear message.

The Bears had just experienced a heartbreaking loss to the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. The Packers loomed again for a rematch at Soldier Field in Chicago less than two weeks later. But Johnson set his intention for the week before he finished speaking with reporters after the loss.

“We’ve got another good opponent coming in in Cleveland,” Johnson said at the time. “I don’t care what their record says. They’ve got a damn good defense.”

A week later, the Bears clearly showed they got the message.

Chicago took care of business and played its best game of the season against an inferior Cleveland Browns team Sunday. All three phases played dominant football in order to win 31-3, the Bears’ biggest margin of victory since December 2020.

“It sets a precedent that we need to go out there and work and earn this win, not just go out there and just play because of their record,” Bears wide receiver DJ Moore said Sunday at Soldier Field. “But just because they are a good team and a top-three defense. We had to go out there and do our thing.”

The Bears did their thing by fixing some of their mistakes that had stopped them from putting away teams in games earlier this season.

After going three-and-out on its opening possession, Chicago’s offense came alive on its following two drives. The Bears took advantage of favorable field position and strong blocking by their offensive line to move the ball 42 yards on six plays to take an early lead when running back D’Andre Swift scored on a 6-yard drive.

Quarterback Caleb Williams continued his strong start to the game when he completed back-to-back passes to rookies Colston Loveland and Luther Burden III for 64 yards. Williams then found Moore for a 3-yard touchdown pass toward the back of the end zone to make it 14-0 with just over a minute left in the first quarter.

Chicago’s offense had been a tale of two halves, even in the dramatic wins.

The Bears valued building an early lead against a top-rated defense that included league sacks leader Myles Garrett.

“We knew we had to start fast,” tight end Cole Kmet said. “Especially with the elements and, quite frankly, with where they were at in the season. So we knew if we did what we had to do early on the game, we could put them away later.”

Williams himself also rebounded with one of his best performances since the Bears’ Week 3 win over the Dallas Cowboys.

His 242 passing yards, two touchdown passes and 60.7% completion rate were hardly any of his season-bests. But Williams looked comfortable throwing the ball despite a game-time temperature of 8 degrees Fahrenheit and the absence of top wide receiver Rome Odunze.

Williams spent the afternoon by leading his receivers to yards after catches.

He also made incredible throws like his

second touchdown pass to Moore in the third quarter that somehow went through three Browns defenders in the back of the end zone.

“I thought he did a good job of finding some open guys and it did feel like we had a little more run after catch here this week than we’ve had maybe over the past few weeks,” Johnson said.

“Usually that’s a good sign.”

While the Bears offense worked some things out Sunday, the defense continued to play up to its potential with as much health as its had this season. With a two-score early lead, that made things even easier.

Chicago eliminated Cleveland’s running attack and forced Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders into mistakes that derailed the offense. Cornerbacks Jaylon Johnson and C.J. Gardner-Johnson and linebacker D’Marco Jackson each intercepted Sanders and the Bears sacked him four times.

Cleveland’s offense finished the game with nine first downs and 192 total yards of offense, the fewest the Bears have

allowed this year.

“I can’t say enough good things about our defense,” Ben Johnson said. “This was really an outstanding performance.”

The complete performance secured the Bears their first 10-win season since 2018 when they won 12. Chicago hadn’t won more than eight games in a season since 2020.

The win also allowed the Bears to move on and look forward to Saturday’s game against the Packers. Chicago will not only want to avenge their Week 14 loss but also move up in the NFC playoff and NFC North standings.

The Bears had done a good job of putting aside their emotions of a tough loss to the Packers in order not blow a prime opportunity Sunday. Now they’ll shift their attention to what could be a monumental game against their longtime rival in front of a national audience.

“I’m definitely excited,” Williams said. “I’m excited for the moment.

They’re coming here and it’s another game for us, but I’m excited.”

Red Devils defeat 2-time defending champion Fieldcrest 61-52 in OT; Trojans edge IVC 67-60

In the first semifinal of the night in the Colmone Classic, Cole Tillman of Mendota and Brady Ward of Chillicothe IVC went head to head with the Trojans coming away with the 67-60 victory.

Hall outlasted defending champ Fieldcrest 61-52 in overtime in the nightcap to set up an Illinois Valley rivals championship Saturday at Hall High School in Spring Valley.

“Hall is a rival and a conference opponent,” Mendota coach Steve Wasmer said. “They are well coached and to bring home that trophy, we are going to have to bring it because it’s going to be an incredible test for us.”

“Mendota is really, really good,” Hall coach Mike Filippini said. “They have great size with two 6-6 kids, so we’re going to have to get after it like we have been all year and hopefully come away with that trophy.”

Mendota 67, IVC 60: IVC used a 13-4 run at the end of the first half to close the gap to 35-34 against the Trojans, thanks in part to Brady Ward. His 3-pointer and assist to Koi Morrow are what finished the half for IVC. But Cole Tillman was equally as good at the other end for the Trojans and his rebound went coast to coast for the layup to start the second half.

But it was Ward who charged ahead, hitting the short jumper to give the Grey Ghosts the lead. AdenTillman got the stick back and then Dane Doyle drained the 3-pointer for a 42-40 Trojans’ lead.

Grady Read drove the lane to tie it at 42, but Oliver Munez, who was solid off the bench for the Trojans, hit the long-distance shot and then dished to Drew Becker for a 49-44 lead going into the final quarter.

Jackson Lopotko got the stick back for the Ghosts, but Cole Tillman answered once again, going strong to the hoop for a 62-56 edge.

Ward hit a 15-foot jumper from the foul line, but after an IVC timeout, Cole Tillman easily pushed the ball for a fast break layup before Munoz hit both foul shots to send the Trojans into the championship game with a 67-60 win.

“Munoz is just a basketball junkie,” Wasmer said. “He comes in and gives us a spark when we needed it in the first half when we were a little stagnant and Cole just did what Cole does best and had another great game.”

Cole Tillman led all scorers with 29 points while Munoz added 15. Tillman and Becker also had nine boards each.

Ward led the Ghosts with 25 points and 10 boards.

Hall 61, Fieldcrest 52 (OT): This semifinal matchup saw Hall race out to an early 15-5 edge in the first quarter, but

the Knights’ Kash Klendworth, who was hounded by Luke Bryant all night, got a 3-pointer to fall and then a bunny shot in the lane to pull Fieldcrest within 26-23 at halftime.

The Knights led to start the fourth, but jumpers from Chace Sterling and Braden Curran made it 39-38 Fieldcrest.

Hall briefly took the lead, but Eli Gerdes followed with a bucket and then followed with a short jumper for a 43-40 Fieldcrest lead.

Curran hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 43. Sterling got another stick back and Braden Kahn fed Drew Overlocker for the bucket in the paint to send the game into overtime tied at 47.

Hall controlled the overtime as Greyson Bickett hit the 15-footer and then Sterling again cut hard to the lane as Fieldcrest was struggling to hit free throws and trailed 51-48.

Bryant banked a 3-pointer and then split his free throws to go ahead 55-48.

Ben Giachetto came in for Sterling, who

fouled out, and got a huge stick back for the Red Devils, who came away with the 61-52 victory.

“I really want to give Luke Bryant a shoutout because Klendworth has been scoring a ton in this tournament and ended with 13 tonight,” Filippini said.

“Greyson Bickett, as well, I thought was tremendous on defense tonight. Chace Sterling was outstanding, especially in the second half. We challenged him at half and he responded in a big way.”

“The Sterling kid is a bull,” Fieldcrest coach Jeremy Hahn said. “He’s big and strong, and we will face another big, strong kid in Ward from IVC. Kash Klendworth was a little off tonight.

Some of that was defense and some was just an off night, so he’ll come back strong tomorrow, I’m sure.”

Sterling led the way with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Braden Curran added 16 points. Fieldcrest was led by Klendworth with 16 points, while Gerdes and Overlocker added 11 each.
