A pie-eating contest, flying pork chops, a Creston High School Peppers performance and overtime Barnstormers football — these were just a few of the highlights of last year’s Southwest Iowa Night at Wells Fargo Arena. This year, more fun is on the way. A limited number of $10 tickets are now on sale for the event, which will take place May 2 as Iowa Barnstormers face the Sioux Falls Storm. In addition to lower bowl seats for the game’s action, tickets also include a pregame pulled pork tailgate dinner. Rich Paulsen, Creston News Advertiser publisher and the event’s organizer, said he expects to sell about 300 tickets this year. He said it’s a good event for families to get out and enjoy a game

at a low price. “It’s just a nice evening out. It affords people the opportunity to take in a Barnstormers game for cheap price, and last year we had lots of families who went,” he said. “You can’t go to a game and get fed for $10 anymore that I know of.” This is the second year Paulsen has organized this event. Last year, more than 200 area residents attended. In addition to the game, in which the Barnstormers fell to the Tampa Bay Storm 6256 in overtime, spectators saw the Peppers perform at halftime, Mayor War-

ren Woods compete in the halftime pork chop toss and Mitch Graham participate in the pie-eating contest. This year, the Creston Salt and Peppers team and the Lenox cheerleaders will perform. The St. Malachy Singers will also sing before the national anthem. Paulsen said he is working on slotting some local representatives to participate in the games. Crestonians and their families are invited to join Creston Park and Recreation Department for the annual McKinley Park cleanup day Saturday. Those interested should meet 8 a.m. at the McKinley Park pool parking lot. “Just wear boots and old clothes,” said Mark Huff, Creston parks director. “We will provide the garbage bags and rubber gloves. This is something we do every year, and the goal is to get rid of the pollutants before they make it to our waterway.” Huff said the cleanup Saturday will be solely inside McKinley Park because High Lakes Outdoor Alliance already trolled the lake for pollutants this week and students from Creston High School and Southwestern Community College have cleaned up the Hurley Creek areas. Huff expects cleanup Saturday inside the park will take a couple hours.

CDC eyeing bird flu vaccine for humans MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal officials said Wednesday they’re taking steps to create a human vaccine for the bird flu virus that’s slammed the Midwest poultry industry, though they still consider the danger to be low and the food supply not at risk. Dr. Alicia Fry, an influenza expert with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said officials are hopeful there won’t be any human cases of the H5N2 strain — which has cost chicken and turkey producers more than 7 million birds since early March — but the country must be prepared. “We’re really at the beginning of this and so are monitoring very closely. And we’re cautiously optimistic that we will not see any human cases,” Fry said on a conference call. Most humans who have come down with other bird flu viruses had close, prolonged contact with infected birds, Fry said, so officials are monitoring at least 100 farm workers who’ve been exposed Please see BIRD FLU, Page 2A
