As Benjamin Franklin once said, “A penny saved is a penny earned.” Creston High School students have used that knowledge and passed it along to third- and fourth-grade students in the Creston area as part of Money Smart Week. Money Smart Week is April 18 to 25, and focuses on teaching people the importance of finances and being savvy when it comes to saving and spending money. “We went to different schools, and we read them (students) a book first, teaching them about money and savings,” said Leah Schuler, Creston sophomore and FBLA member. “It teaches me that you have to start saving at a young age, because most kids don’t do that. And, we’re teaching them to be smarter in that way.”

Classrooms Local Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) students went into classrooms to teach kids the importance of finances. “Our FBLA chapter held a few meetings to get it organized, and we split into different groups of people that wanted to do the different schools,” said Alli Thomsen, CHS junior and committee leader. “We practiced reading our stories and developed questions that we wanted to ask the kids.” Thomsen and approximately 20 other students on the committee assembled cardboard piggy banks for the students at Creston Elementary, Mayflower Heritage Christian and St. Malachy schools to deco-

rate and use to save money. “The kids actually got really into it. They got really excited a b o u t , Thomsen l i k e , making their boxes unique,” Thomsen said. “I just thought it was cool to see. We went to four classrooms, but all the boxes were different, and the kids just put their own twist on them.” Different box styles included a Transformer, monster and video game.

Contest Each classroom had three winners for the most colorful, most unique and most money smart piggy banks based on the decorations. Each winner won a prize of $1 they could put in their bank to start their savings. “When we would call the winners’ names, they would get really excited and put the dollar in their bank. It was really cute,” said Jenna Taylor, Creston junior and FBLA member. “I think it’s important as an FBLA member to be a leader, and be involved in the younger generation, and teaching them about aspects of business.” The second half of the piggy bank event includes a statewide Pinterest contest. Pictures were taken of each piggy bank and posted online on Pinterest, where anyone can “like” whichever bank they think is a winner. The owner of the bank with the most “likes” will win $100. Students who had their banks posted online were from third grade at Creston Elementary and St. Malachy schools, and third and fourth grade at Mayflower Heritage Christian School. “FBLA has to do with business, and money has to do with business, but it’s Please see MONEY, Page 2
